“No one is just one thing” a wise friend once said to me. Joe Lacob is a genius and arrogant fool at the same time. Kerr was Lacob’s second choice (remember Stan Van Gundy?). He offered Steph or Monte—Milwaukee’s choice—for Bogut. He fired Jerry West. He drafted two unproven player believing he could buy them basketball IQ and force them into a system they didn’t fit. And worse, refused to recognize that until it was so obvious they had no value.

Yet he had the vision to hire Jerry West and Steve Kerr and Bob Myers. To spend on talent. To care about winning and listen to those who knew how to. And he did it, too.

For a while. Until he arrogantly thought he knew better.

No one is just one thing. He was the savior of the Warriors and now is their worst enemy.

Lacob has many many positive traits.

Basketball scouting is not one of them. There’s no Jerry West in the building anymore. Hopefully it all works out, but money and power haven’t traditionally been great for improving people’s judgment over time.

If he’s committed to never tanking then there’s a coach in Utah that might be eager to listen to a job offer.
