PODZ assessment: '....Lacob said. “The talent combined with the IQ and the personality was something to bet on.” '

One thing I have learned about Joe Lacob over the last 12 years is, though he is a risk-taker, BACK HIS BETS! As result, he is 4 rings and 8 billion dollars ahead! lol I have outdone him though in my career. My 2d CEO gig, we took a a 35 million book of company business to 750 million annual book of business in 4 years, in 1990s dollars. That's twice the 10-fold growth in value of the DUBS investment over 12 years. lol

Artiicle from MTII on the Dubs 4th Q issues

“The Warriors sit 10th in the Western Conference largely because of this statistic: they have lost 28 of their first 53 fourth quarters. They are 9-19 when losing the final frame — which makes it somewhat impressive they’re a game above .500 and still within shouting distance of the No. 5 seed. It is because the Warriors win 72 percent of the games when they don’t lose the fourth quarter: 15-6 when they win it, 3-1 when they tie it. When things are going well, they are formidable. The issue has been consistency.”

My favorite parts from the same article by Slater :

>>>>>>Green sprained his left ankle just before training camp. He missed about a month. In his ramp-up to return, the Warriors set up a scrimmage in Sacramento the morning of their second game. Podziemski was out of the rotation, so they had him play on Green’s team. They lost the first scrimmage after Green turned it over.

“We can’t have a turnover for game!” Podziemski told Green. “You cannot turn the ball over for game.”

Green was stunned. They’ve had rookies who barely say a word to him the entire season.

“I was like, ‘OK, cool, you got it. No problem,'” Green said. “Here we are playing a pick-up game, a game to get me ready and he’s yelling at me. That to me said a whole lot. I was like, ‘You know what? No problem. But make sure you speak up like that all the time.'” >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Interesting to compare how Dray appears to be accepting the brash Podz with his relationship with another young brash player, JP

Expand full comment

JP was more of a needler, I thought. Remember his "I'm not a robot!" comeback to Green when Green got on him, referencing Green's blowup at Kerr in 2016?

I thought a lot of what he said was pretty damn funny, but I'm guessing that Green didn't find it so, along with his lack of interest in defense.

Expand full comment

Well, there is a lot of nuance to that comparison, but my memory is that Dray liked JP initially, particularly his brashness. There was some evolution to both of them over the time JP was with us and I don't think the two situations are comparable. (and or course brashness is not the sum of anyones personality and BP and JP are decidedly different people)

Expand full comment

I would posit that JP was brash and Podz is just intense, possible more intense (though more in control of his temper) than Dray.

JP was mostly whatever is worse than a traffic cone defensively and irrationally sure of his shot. (While still being a huge part of the last chip)

Podz seems to understand his limitations a lot better and is active on both sides of the ball while being the most vocal about absolutely fucking hating to lose of anyone on the team I can remember in the last several years.

I can see both of these things being grating at times but one of them is a lot easier to live with long term.

TLDR what DFIB said.

Expand full comment

Player J: doesn't try on defense, exchanges personal insults as trash talk

Player B: Tries like hell on defense (e.g. leads the league in charges), criticizes a bad play at a critical part of the game

For me, these are very different types of "brashness", and it's obvious why Dray would accept Podz' brashness way more.

I feel like I remember Draymond Green telling a similar sounding story about when he was a rookie and simply wanted to practice harder and compete harder than the vets in practice. If I remember right, his assigned vet wasn’t really having it and Dray asked for a different vet.

A healthy OPJ would give this team so many more options......

Feb 22·edited Feb 22

Otto has been healthy one season in the last four, and not so far this season (15 games played). The idea that him coming here is going to work is unrealistic.

Also, have you looked at his production this year? 2.6 points, two rebounds, in 11 minutes a game. Those are G-league callup numbers.

Fortunately, I think MDJ isn't going to go for it. I'm fairly sure the Dubs have a long-term plan to cut costs and will stay disciplined.

Probably for his shot at perfection in a Dub's uniform as far as championships goes. Patrick McCaw's level of excellence.

Two thoughts on the JJ Redick vs. Pat Beverly beef:

1. I LOVE IT. I really enjoyed JJ telling the world that Doc Rivers is a fraud, and if he also shows the world what a dope Pat Bev is, I'm all in.

2. I hereby release everyone here from the obligation of referring to Twitter as X or vice versa, or from saying "... Twitter, formerly known as X". You won't get in any trouble with me if you say "I saw on Twitter..." However, you will get in trouble with your own soul if you spend too much time there. 'Bout three, maybe four minutes is the recommended limit.

Shams reporting LeBron is out tomorrow. Clearly the Lakers’ staff has been paying attention to the Warriors’ ability to lose to teams missing stars 😐

Expand full comment

I wander how the free throw differential line changed after this news - down to 20 maybe from 35?

Expand full comment

So he sits out their last game before the ASB, then plays in the ASG (only 13 minutes, but some dunk exertion), and then sits out in their first game back. I'm guessing the Lakers aren't too thrilled about that.

"plays" in the all star "game" feels like too strong language for what that exhibition looked like. LeBron probably exerts himself more than that in team practices.

If we win, does that mean he's not a star anymore?

Also ,without LBJ, should we have a pool for who they choose to get fouled if they're down by a couple with 2 seconds left? Smart money on AD or Reeves, right? (because they're gonna call one ...)

Lets bring Otto home

Expand full comment

Otto played well here in a limited role for one season but SF is not his home. Wanting to bring in players just because they used to play here is a fan thing but I hope the Dubs FO is wiser than that — unless MDJ really thinks Porter can help this year.

Come to that, why would Utah buy him out if he's still that good, and he's healthy, and given that he doesn't have an albatross contract ($6.3M)? Because he's fragile? He certainly is that. Otto has played more than 28 games in only one season out of the past 4 (with us) and has played 15 games this season.

If we signed him, would he actually play? Whose minutes would he take? Otto is a wing. Kerr won't find minutes for Moody, JK is finally getting minutes that most of us don't want cut, and Wiggs is looking like 2-way Wiggs again. Klay's minutes? If Kerr were going to do that he'd have given some of Klay's minutes to Moody.

Feb 22·edited Feb 22

If his health is decent (big question), he's an insurance policy and our 15th guy. He likely would only get minutes if a couple of guys ahead of him in the rotation got hurt, but with his skills, he'd be a hell of a 15th man, and a lot better than Rudy Gay who the Dubs flirted with in the preseason.

Expand full comment

Why would Otto agree to that? If he's bought out, he can pick and choose.

Expand full comment

Utah doesn't want to win, and if OPJ is healthy and good that's obviously going to run against their goal. Assuming he's good, the Warriors were the last team OPJ was able to stay healthy on.

Yeah but also he hasn't been bought out so what do they mean? Try to find a trade? It's past the trade deadline and so no contenders will bother and he's not a rebuilding team kind of guy.

If he does get bought out, the W's should finally fill that 15th spot. and phooey to those who say his time with the Warriors is over or that he's injury prone (ok, he is, but maybe he'll stay healthy for one more ring :)

Spencer has shot the ball well so far in the G-League, although it's not that much to go off of.

It might not be an entirely legit way to project someone's shooting (maybe though? Steph/Seth, Lonzo/LaMelo, etc?) but Spencer's brother is setting the nets on fire at UConn this season. Pat got a much later start on playing basketball so maybe his natural shooting ability is just starting to be reflected in his percentages?

OT, but I really, really hope that screen-floor they used for All-Star Saturday isn't something we'll ever see for actual games. NBA arenas are already overstimulating, imo, and I found that hard to watch even on TV. It'd be impossible, I imagine, for many folks with neurodivergence. Hopefully just a one-time, or very occasional, gimmick.

Expand full comment

I hated it. Not only is it overstimulating, but they had to darken the crowd, which is also disorienting, I presume not just for me but for players.

Expand full comment

They usually only do it for the TV audience and I can see them doin it for play "in" and playoff games like they do the estimated distance 3 point shot.

I agree that it can be over stimulating and was hoping for just something like what hocky does.

They could use it for eg the in season tournament special floors, doesn’t have to be animating. (Which I agree is a lot).
