I didn't want to start Daniels post off with this so I'll leave it here.

I never though I'd say this but I'm starting to wonder if there was some truth to that rumor about Steph and Ayesha from that ridiculous "sauce" that came out a month ago. Started around the same time as his shooting slump.

Please just let it be "adjusting to Klay and no Draymond available right now"...

For whatever it’s worth, Ayesha has come out and explicitly refuted these rumors.

I agree with whoever said it: back-seat psychoanalysis of Steph's mental state based on a rumor that has been denied (Steph/Ayeesha) seems pointless. I have been tempted once or twice to guess that his parents' divorce might be bothering him, but it's just not possible to know. And more than that, this whole angle on things feels a bit tawdry. Private lives are private. If we want to speculate that Steph isn't shooting well because he is using his left hand incorrectly or aging or whatever, those seem like fair game in sports. The other is speculative and I think unfair. When I'm grouchy, I sure don't want people speculating that it's my marriage that's making me grouchy. Maybe, maybe not, but it's my business. Fair?

Rumors confirmed that Asher B's marriage is making him grouchy. Is this why the quality of his posts has fallen off recently?

Stay tuned!

Oh a rumor came out that Steph and Ayesha have an open marriage. No idea if there's any truth behind it, but also no idea why it would launch him into a crazy shooting slump either.

Y’all remember when Oubres gal stole his dog and he missed 100 threes in a row? Not sure how this relates but off court can impact on court.

No but who steals a dog???!?? NEVER DO THAT

For the record - I don’t buy or subscribe to any trolling rumors about Steph and Ayesha having an open marriage. Normally I would say, and if they did I don’t care either. But in this case, I think, given their Christian faith, and commitment to their family, that they’d find the rumors insulting, so suggest we squash the rumors. But that girl did steal Oubres dog.

Expand full comment

Didn’t Sonya and Dell profess a lot of the same “Christian faith” while they were messing around on each other?

FWIW, I think Steph’s parents’ breakup could be in his head as much as anything.

"Having an open marriage" does not suddenly affect his performances. The FACT that his FANS talking about THE RUMOR definitely affects his spirit. His heart broken !

Let's stop here.

From Slater: "Thompson revealed the reason for his recent absence. In the loss to the Pacers, he hyperextended his left knee, which led to some soreness and swelling. The Warriors held him out of the past two games before giving him the green light on Tuesday night."

I wanted check as to where do Klay's 6 assists in 26 min stand w.r.t. all the games he has played.

He has had only 5 other games with better per 36 assist numbers.

I LOVE that even while he’s still figuring out the efficiency part, Klay is doing this per 36:

24.8 points

4.8 rebounds

3.4 assists

Those are all career-high rates. (As are the 3.1 turnovers, but hopefully he can work that out, too…)

Killmonger's going to have improve on the "1 turnover every 4 minutes" stat to be a closer.

He's got all the skills to be an all star, it's super exciting to see him stuff people in the basket AND make open threes consistently. He just needs more familiarity and experience.

Totally different players with totally different roles. Pointless comparison with a nice “I been tryna tell y’all” added for extra pointlessness. ;-P

I mean, fans on fanboards always wanna see the younguns play more, cos it’s highly entertaining to watch the kids play. And any time a youngun plays well, fans on fanboards will come out of the woodwork to say, “see, I told you and the stupid head coach he shoulda been playing more!!” But … isn’t the very fact that a youngun is playing well also solid evidence that they’ve been developing him right?

Let's just have more 38 point wins and we'll see a lot more Kuminga. Problem solved.

For playoffs this year with everyone healthy - Nah B. That telepathic chemistry (on O or D) takes time to build. So does the discipline in context of motion heavy offense when under pressure from playoff level defense.

Didn't know that NYT bought The Athletic for $550 million. Hopefully Slater, MTII, TK and all other contributors made some money. I vaguely remember reading that contributors got stock options as part of compensation.

Hopefully DNHQ has something of that sorts in future.

If the NYT takes over editorial control the write up for games like last nights will be "Both the Mavericks and the Warriors had a legitimate claim to be the victor of last night's contest. The Warriors eked out an edge in points but as head coach Jason Kidd pointed out it was close for at least 10 minutes". And a reporter going to a Dallas bar and writing a fluff piece about how Mavericks fans still support the Mavericks despite the loss.

I specialize in helping startups grow and scale. The sort of fan platform we have going here could genuinely be a template for something very special and lucrative. The difficult part is figuring out how to build the "right" kind of fan base in each geographical area.

As special as the content here is (and it's genuinely very good and unique) the real magic is the intelligence and community of the commenters. This is not your typical comment board where hot takes and mindless arguing rule the day.

The "Nation HQ" brand really has potential but it would take a whole lot of work to get there.

Honestly I don't think it necessarily would have to be. It would certainly need to be structured differently as the emphasis would be much more on community engagement than necessarily high level journalism, and so you'd need to keep the small feel to it, but that could still conceivably be done on a large scale.

I mean, have one community like this for every professional sports team of the big 3 and you're already close to 100 distinct communities with potentially tens of thousands of engaged fans (the engagement is the key). That's without even tapping into the college scene.

It's a saturated market, but I think we can all agree that what this platform offers is incredibly unique and different.

The most difficult part would be finding high quality authors to provide good content but also willing to interact with fans as a fan.

It's the unique mix of knowledgeable sports writing and unabashedly biased fan blog that makes it so much fun.

It's essentially what SB Nation tried to do but never really figured out the magic sauce for.

Quiet night, relatively speaking, for Looney, but he still played well. The was a "Wrong guy," possession when Doncic I think tried to ISO him (with typical levels of success—missed jumper). I think I'm going to start thinking that to myself, maybe even saying it out loud every time an opposing team forces a switch so a guard can try their luck against Looney Looney. Wrong guy my dudes. You're gonna get around/past him maybe one time in 10 and he's not gonna bail you out with free throws. Maybe try that iso against (checks list... not that guy, nope, not that guy either, absolutely not him, nope, hmm) Poole or Bjelica I guess??

Otto Porter Jr also quietly had another excellent game, with some key boards, defensive possessions, and automatic corner 3's.

Doncic had 25 points but was -19 on the floor.

Jan 26, 2022·edited Jan 26, 2022

One game samples of plus-minus may mean next to nothing, since there were nine other players on the floor who contributed to that result. And the Mavs lost by 38, so Luka being -19 is not particularly noteworthy.

Still, in the case of Luka, bigger samples tell a somewhat similar story. He’s a +0.5 on court this season, and a +1.5 for his career — worse on both counts than the Mavs’ numbers with him on the bench. That’s not the kind of result you’d expect from a guy considered by many to be a superstar.

By way of comparison, Steph is a +12.5 this season and +8.5 for his career, both vastly better than the Warriors’ numbers without him (-1.8 this season, -3.2 career).

Of course, Luka’s still super young and super talented, so will almost certainly improve. But for now, the on-court impact numbers do not match the hype.

The Warriors figured out how to get around him on defense, including one or two where he was too busy complaining to the ref to even make it up court. Dallas certainly looked more vulnerable overall when he was playing, and even his offense was good, it wasn't super efficient like the Warriors' counterattack was.
