🚨 A LIAR?! 🚨 Bobby Marks outlines WHAT’S NEXT for James Harden! | NBA on ESPN: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOgcgTEfQdA

Apparently there is a special clause in the CBA that only applies to players in the final year of their contract that stipulates that a player withholding services (refusing to play) may not sign with any other professional basketball team without the permission of his former team. Not a new rule, apparently.

Harden is apparently in China when he is making these remarks, which coupled with Moray's speaking out against China for human rights abuses a while back adds a whole nother layer of icing to the WTF cake...

Very OT and personal:

I've been hanging onto this one until the middle of the offseason, to minimize disruption, but here we go. I'll delete if people feel it's inappropriate.

Due to some recent huge life changes, I find myself (at age 63) with a little more money than I ever thought I would have. Also, for the first time in a very long time, I'm free of family responsibilities.

I am thinking about buying a house in Spain and relocating permanently in Spain (from the USA), using the 'golden visa' option (buy property worth 500K euros). Vigo or Bilbao are top of the list so far.

I'm wondering if we have any expats or digital nomads (particularly in Spain) who would care to comment on the experience of relocating to Europe?

1) I love Spain; amazing country, amazing people & vibe; I have only been as a visitor (study abroad & vacation), but quality of life seemed very high

2) I have a friend who lived in Bilbao for several years & loved it, very cool city

I moved to Prague 3 years ago, initially as a student and now I work there. After visiting Madrid we’d actually like to move to Spain, or Portugal, or maybe Italy, within the next few years - started Spanish lessons and everything.

So my experience in terms of the move is likely quite different than someone going the golden visa route.

That said, even with Czech bureaucracy- which is almost certainly worse to deal with than any of the southern European countries - the process wasn’t particularly bad, even in the midst of the pandemic. It sucks while you’re doing it, but in hindsight everything went relatively smoothly. If you have any specific questions I’d be happy to answer them.

Thanks very much ... I appreciate the response. Unfortunately, I don't really know what to ask, and most of the questions I have so far are about fairly abstruse topics (taxation being top of the list right now).

Your general comments are more what I was looking at. Do you still feel it was worth it, any gotchas ... seems like not, in your case.

GreenDray's excellent comment about inheritance taxes had me look into that and it looks pretty challenging. In Spain, anything over €400K gets taxed at around 37%. I assume you are younger, so not a concern for you, but it probably is a deal breaker for me.

Exciting stuff, and we’ve kicked around the same.

Can’t say I know much, but the Mrs. and I have watched a lot of this guy’s videos and they’re really good resource. I believe he’s Australian but his wife is Spanish. He does a lot of tours of Spain, but is really more of a guru about how to move to Spain as an expat and what it’s like to live there.. He also does live classes and stuff for money. https://youtube.com/@spainrevealed

I have family living in Spain, and they are considering moving due to onerous tax burden, including wealth tax, inheritance tax (if you have any heirs), and high real estate transaction taxes. They probably won't leave and just deal with it, but could Portugal be a better option? I believe their visa options are more beneficial in terms of taxes, but are going to change soon.

Personally, I'd just try to relocate to Ireland and spend winters down south, wherever. Flights are cheap.

Ireland:

That's a very interesting idea ... I was thinking Spain because I want to learn Spanish, but that might work nearly as well. What I really want to do is live in a coastal city on the Atlantic (breathing/allergy issues). Ireland fits!

Expand full comment

I would personally want to consider the effects of global warming over the next ~20 years were I you. Ireland is probably a better bet in that regard than Spain.

Expand full comment

Yes, I've been thinking about that.

That's the main reason for the cities in Spain that I am looking at.

Vigo is a port town on the Atlantic, just north of Portugal. And Bilbao is on the northern coast of Spain (Bay of Biscay). Both are right on the water. Their 'average' climate is on the cooler side right now (40s to 80s F). Unless global warming turns everything topsy turvy, I think the best bet for being in moderate temperatures is to be on the coast.

Vigo is interesting, in that it's not really a touristy town like Barcelona. It's way away from everywhere, so real estate prices seem pretty reasonable. You can find flats overlooking the harbor (with great views) for 400K Euros. Try that anywhere in California.

Interesting idea.

My plan is to put my stuff in storage next June and just do the AirBNB thing for three months in Spain. From there, maybe do the same thing in Portugal (you can only stay in Spain 3 months out of 6 on a tourist visa).

After that, I'll make up my mind whether this move idea makes any sense at all.

Hmmm ... the inheritance taxes are a good point. I need to look into it.

Where is your family in Spain?

The wealth tax is a PITA, but under a certain level of wealth (which I am well under), it's run by each local jurisdiction, and apparently some of the jurisdictions have waived the wealth tax (it is horrendous ... somewhere between 1% - 3% of worldwide wealth each year).

I looked at Portugal, but they are in the process of stopping the 'golden visa' altogether. And even now, the only places you can use it are in parts of Portugal where property values are depressed (basically, underpopulated towns/villages in the interior of the country). Porto and Lisbon are red-lined for buying property with the golden visa.

I have relatives that moved from Northern Europe to the Balearic Islands decades ago.

If I were to move there (considering it in a few years), it would probably be Denia / Xàbia area. Still on the mainland, close to Valencia, but has ferries to Ibiza and is fairly relaxed. I do think Southern Spain is generally problematic due to the increasingly severe impact of climate change / heat waves.

I'm pretty sure all of urban Western Europe has access to supermarkets, just like here in the USA. I don't think you'd be limited in what you could cook in significant ways.

Bilbao, Spain is reported to be a foodie paradise, and I'm sure there are other cities in Spain where that is true (Barcelona, certainly).

I'm not really a foodie, but I like good cheap food. From what I can tell at a distance, Spain seems OK on that score.

Aloha everyone!

Thanks for the previous messages of concern. I’m fine as we’ve been on the mainland visiting family and camping. Our home (condo) in Kihei is fine as well. Knock on wood, but it looks like all of my friends are accounted for and healthy, but some lost their homes and/or businesses and those north of Lahaina and still cut off from the rest of the island. I also am hoping all of OGGgirl’s F&F are ok.

That said, the island is hurting in a way I, as a transplant, can only begin to comprehend. The death toll keeps rising, but only a few have been identified, and it’s now the worst fire in modern U.S. history. Beyond the shops, restaurants, bars and views on famous Front Street, Lahaina has been a historic and cultural hub for all of Hawaii, and home to many families for generations who are dealing family members feared dead, loss of their homes, businesses, jobs, other family members’ homes and their whole town.

Thank you Sab for posting the the links on ways to support the relief effort. We chose to support https://www.hawaiicommunityfoundation.org/maui-strong (the Obama one), but Maui Food Bank and United Way are both good ones as well. Hell, all the ones she listed are good. Out of all the names listed (including Quiñones) this is the only player that really piques my interest. Im all about positional versatility and GR3 would provide plenty of that IF hes able to round into form. I also think we would benefit from havong a true backup to Wiggins. In a dream scenario, sign GR3 to that 14th spot, sign Quinones and HG3 to 2 ways and find a way to stash Gui Santos one more year

Expand full comment

GR3 and Alec Burks deserves another shot with us on a year where we aren’t tanking

Expand full comment

I want us to get the player who best fits and can contribute. I don't care whether that person played here before, especially in that season, because with Steph and Klay out and Draymond only halfway there (mentally and physically), it wasn't classic Kerrball. So to say they know the system would only be half true.

Expand full comment

okay we were just bad

Expand full comment

Not everyone on the team was part of the reason the team was bad, so they deserve a look, but it needs to be critical because the team doesn't get the worst record in yet league without a lot of guys contributing in the wrong way.

Expand full comment

I mean that team didn’t have their 3 best players for pretty much the entire year. It also consisted of JP who was one of the more sorry rookies, fringe NBA talent taking up roster spaces and us dumping GR3/AB for picks. That squad was riddled with injuries, lacked talent and never got a chance to gel before breaking up. They never stood a chance.

Expand full comment

Are Kuminga and Moody not true backups to Wiggins?

Expand full comment

I think its fair to say Moody’s more of a 2 and Kuminga’s more of a 4. GR3 slots into that 3 spot more naturally, but I’m definitely of the opinion I’d rather have them play those minutes if possible. As much as I liked GR3 during the tank year, not confident there’s a compelling reason to give him that significant of a role. Perfect guy for if there’s an injury though.

Expand full comment

What exactly makes GR3 more of a “true three” than the other two? Going by the “you are what you can guard” school of positionality: I’m dubious he can guard the 3, 2 or 4 better than either of them (certainly not better than JK). And I don’t think he’s nearly as skilled offensively as either of them, despite being eight years older. And of course he completely lacks the upside of either.

Basically, I’d be miffed if he got a single minute of JK’s or Moody’s playing time, barring injury or a needed rest game.

Jake Moody > Moses Moody and I don’t even follow football closely. If GR3 approximates his 2019-2020 self id be more than comfortable having him ahead of Moody on the depth chart and playing with Kuminga.

That’s nice. He won’t be ahead of Moody, though, barring injury. He probably won’t even make the team.

I agree. I don’t think he will either. I think professional team sports are so advanced and specialized now that each yr is a build up of skills and stamina from one to the next. Missing several like GR3 and Waiters seems like the kiss of death BUT if GR3 were to miraculously perform at a similar level i think he would deserve a regular rotation spot on this squad

On a related note. This was the first major fight in a while that I missed on the winner (not counting Haney-Loma cause i thought Vasily clearly won). I thought Navarrete lost against Liam Wilson. Thougjt he got bailed out by the ref. But more importantly I thought he looked flabby and out of shape. And I thought Valdez was gonna make him pay. However to my credit i hadnt really paid much attention to the prelims so when i saw Navarrete tonight prior to the fight and I saw a vain popping out of his arm, I told my friend that I may no longer be sure this was going to be a win for Valdez. Apparently EN hired a nutritionist and it clearly showed. His Stamina was what impressed me the most

GP2 looked bouncy, good news.

JK looked bouncy and fun. I don't think I learned anything about how he'll play against NBA team defense, nor how he'll play on defense. But I watched the whole thing and enjoyed it!

Kuminga's handle looks a little better in this than I remember. He used to get a little wobbly after two or three dribbles. Admittedly, he's not going up against NBA-level ball hawks.

I noticed that too… I actually saw him weave in and out between multiple defenders in traffic which I’ve never seen him do against nba level opponents

Those so-called defenders made Jordan Poole look like the DPOY. However, JK's handles do look improved.

Expand full comment

That was some silly fun. Not much data there on JK's progress. What data there was wasn't super encouraging, though JK was clearly a better class of athlete than most on the floor. JK clanked at least 15 treys, many really badly. I know shot selection isn't required in this exhibition setting, but it's still a place to build habits. GP2 on the other hand looked like terrific, on a different level from the rest of the dudes out there, and like Sleepy said below, really bouncy, balanced, and quick. That was very encouraging indeed.

Expand full comment

Do we know what his attempts vs makes were? I'm just trying to figure out his percentage.

In any case, I don't really care about shot selection in the Crawsover, I'm more interested in the mechanics of his jump shot and how much arc he's getting (his past jump shots looked more flatter).

JK’s lack of rebounding is overstated, imo. He has averaged 6.5 boards per 36 over his career — both reg season and playoffs. Not incredible for a 3-4, but not bad at all for a 19-20 year-old still figuring stuff out.

I assume next season he’ll be getting a bunch of the rotation minutes and scoring touches that were previously earmarked for JP. If he can bring some of JP’s lost scoring punch, at slightly higher efficiency, while rebounding at nearly twice the rate and being 10x the defender, it could be a pretty big overall plus for the team.

Expand full comment

Yah... Having CP3 instead of JP3 as backup PG is going to be huge for Kuminga and Moody. I'm really looking forward to seeing how both their games evolve this coming year, but especially JK as he's the high ceiling talent and this is year 3 with a perfect team setup.

Expand full comment

It sure looks like that's the plan given roster construction!

Expand full comment

Agreed re: level of competition, but there were some eye opening plays. JK made quite a few pull up jumpers. I have no idea how many he clanked, but there were at least a handful of stepback 3's, long fadeaway 2's, and crossover/juke 3's that were impressive. I think there was one C&S 3, as well. That does bode well. There were a lot of cuts to the basket 'oops, and quite a few where he just blew by his guy, sometimes on a screen and just wove through the remaining competition, but at least a couple where he stopped mid-range and elevated into a nice jump shot.

It looks like he's been working on his offensive game and shot, which bodes very well.
