Just listened to a podcast where Looney, down to a nice 245 lbs, apparently went up to his shooting coach and said I am ready to start shooting 3’s and the coach said I have been waiting to hear that!

That does not sound like it has been a point of emphasis before.

This season is going to be so interesting if KL actually transforms himself and GP can stay healthy and return to his best form. As I have said too often, the ultimate team of IF’s.

This has to be the most unpredictable and fascinating team they have had.

Wow! I have been asking for decades why Looney doesn't at least try to learn to shoot 3s or even jumpers. LEt's see how this plays out. Maybe the threat of the Great White Post got him going...?

Expand full comment

That and the final year of his contract. If he's going to stay in the league, it would help a lot for him to be enough of an offensive threat that teams have to guard him...

Expand full comment

So we waived Plowden but he can still attend camp? Do we have him under some other contract instead? I'm wondering if this juggling of two-ways has more to do with some obscure rules rather anything to do with who actually gets the final two-way spots.

Warriors signing Knox??? How? I thought they didn't have any cap space

The podcaster for Golden State with Mates was lobbying for this idea. Glad we get to see it in action!

Presumably exhibit 10 or exhibit 9, just for training camp. If they really like him they can waive Gui or Lindy, or make some space with a trade.

Expand full comment

It is peculiar but here's a key sentence at the very end: "Now he returns to Golden State to compete for a roster spot." So whatever contract he signed, it's not a guaranteed roster spot. Also I don't see anything about this on the Dubs website, whereas they DO discuss waiving Plowden. So... maybe this is an unconfirmed rumor?

That’s a lotta guys for Mr. Plow to plow through before sniffing any actual rotation minutes. As it is, I’m concerned about Moody and Waters getting logjammed out of playing time. If we didn’t have them, Plowden would make more sense as a depth piece.

I’m not that sold on Beekman or Spencer — prefer Plowden in a vacuum — but at least they add to a primary ballhandler depth chart that’s not quite as stacked as the wing depth chart. And of course Post fills a stretch C role that was previously unmanned.

Still wondering if we're going to get a consolidation trade. I can't imagine who is still out there, but all of these signings would make more sense if some of these guys are headed elsewhere.

We need a Fitz bingo card:

“De’Anthony is so hot he’s Melton!”

(After a block) “Quinten says ‘Maybe you didn’t hear, this is the Post Office!”

“Buddy’s well-Hield in the art of shooting.”

“Raging Waters with another three!”

(After Anderson shuts down a hot opponent) “SloMo says ‘no Mo’!”

You will regret this post when you hear some of them actually said by Fitz later in the year.

Funny (and true, I think) story. I made a joke here a few years back about Kermit "it's not easy being Green." (i.e., Draymond). Fitz used the same line either that year or the year after on the air.

So, either it was a big coincidence, or he or Ritter have someone checking the Dubs blogs. My money is on that Ritter has interns reading the main Dubs blogs.

Expand full comment

Hmm. no comment on Ritter having interns reading all the blogs - that is the kind of online behavior that has become so common as to barely warrant notice in the internet age.

However, as evidence, you are using the fact that an announcer used an almost iconic pop culture line as a very applicable reference (thanks to Dray's last name and - often self inflicted - difficulties) sometime in a 2 year window after you had used the same line on a small online message board? 'Cause I used that line before I ever heard or read anyone using it so the obvious conclusion is not that Ritter has interns combing the message boards for good (bad?) lines for Fitz. The obvious conclusion is actually that Ritter has a secret team of psychics combing the personal thoughts of all Warriors fans to find such amazing and unique content for Fitz to use so that he can remain the universally popular and non polarizing announcer he has always been.

Post is my dude.

I don't have strong feelings about the Plow since he hasn't proven himself in the big show after several years of trying. But maybe his game has developed.

Still, Post is my guy. I have a rationally good feeling about this slow-footed sharpshooting Dutch fella. I want to see us put an all-three-point shooters lineup out there of Steph, Hield, Waters, Post and Podz, and dare the other team to dare us to shoot.

Steph and Hield are the bums in this crowd. Post shot 43% from the college 3 last year, Waters 47% off the OKC bench, yes that says 47.% (Probably defended by backups but still who shoots 47%)

Or maybe ... wait for it ... substitute Draymond for Podz, see if Draymond's last season's 39% from three holds up, which is very hard to believe.

RE: Plowden's slower development. Think Gary Payton II.

But I'm glad Post is your guy. Let's hope for all of our sakes that he is a raging success as a Warrior.

Two other guys who might join the party:

Melton’s had seasons of 37%, 41% and 39% from 3 as recent as two seasons ago.

SloMo shot 41% two seasons ago.

Plus Looney, Kuminga and TJD all fancy themselves as shooters. Get your sombreros, pinatinas and cervezas ready, because this season’s gonna be a goddamn three-esta!

I hope you are right. I hope he's less Smiley and more Bogut. Time will tell, and Dunleavy has been solid with the draft. But Dunleavy's failed to bring in any rim protection. Is Post the one?

Expand full comment

Watching film, he looks more like Bogut as far as having a more physical game, and he likes to let everyone know after he stuffs or dunks on a fool. I think the comp to look for is Brook Lopez with the 3-point shooting software pre-loaded. Ringer had compared him to Troy Murphy. Either of those guys would be huge successes for a guy taken at the bottom of the 2nd round.

Expand full comment

"Dunleavy's failed to bring in any rim protection" TJD says hello.

Post is probably neither Smiley nor non-shooter Bogut. But because Post will be a stretch 5 (if he makes it), he might be able to play alongside Dray or even TJD so we'd get rim protection that way.

>>Post is my guy. I have a rationally good feeling about this slow-footed sharpshooting Dutch fella.<<

The new era of space-and-no-pace is nigh!

Pair Slo-Mo with Post, Moody (slow release, lateral slowness, slow decision-making), and a few bench players heavily infused with ketamine for the slowest bench shooting line-up in the league!!

EDIT: The theme song for this era is simply the constant and alternating buzz of shot-clock and backcourt violations!!!

I am surprised but they need the best point guard as well as post. Maybe they let plowed s agent know it’s still quite likely but they needed an option to have time to assess. I'm guessing the front office expected to make a trade that consolidated the roster, which would mean they intended to sign Post to the full roster...i guess.

I thought plowdin could function like a JTA or Damion Lee meaning solid back of the bench players Kerr trust. Odds are it won't matter but I wanted to see what he could do. Might still get that chance

Popping in to drop some thoughts on this pretty unexpected move.

Post earning one of the two-ways was a foregone conclusion, but out of all 3 spots, to give him this one? I don't like it. Plowden by far was the most playable prospect among their two-ways and guy they should not let test FA. I would not at all be surprised if another team claims his two-way and the Warriors don't have the chance to bring him to camp (Hawks have clear interest).

What they should've done is either:

a) waive Spencer. He's useful as a 3rd PG, but he's 28 and likely wouldn't be sought after on the market and could be brought back to camp pretty easily.

b) waive Beekman. Clearly they like him as a prospect and weren't going to risk it, but this is who I would've sacrificed as he's the least useful of the three this season despite being an intriguing developmental prospect.

c) sign Post to an Exhibit 10 with the expectation that they'd obviously convert him to a two-way. Unprecedented move for a draft pick, and maybe his management declines it, but would've been the surefire way to keep everyone for camp.

If everything works out, all is forgiven, but I do not understand this course of action.

Expand full comment

I think it is actually simple. Look at how many wings they have and they just added Knox to the mix. Unless you think Plowden who has not done anything against NBA regular players is better than the existing group made up of guys who have been successful in the real NBA, why do they need him?

Beekman may or may not develop into a solid NBA point but the need is definitely there in the not to distant future. Spencer must be seen as someone they think can be a decent emergency point guard for this season.

Expand full comment

I agree that this feels weird. I get that the team is light at PG and that any game where Steph is out will be a little bit of a stretch. (36 min of Podz, and 12 min of Spencer/Beekman or 12 min of Dray+SloMo+Melton committee). But it really doesn’t feel like you need 2 backup PGs on 2 ways, and ever since the Ky Bowman experience I’ve been skeptical of short defense first PGs with no shot.

I get that we’re heavy on wings, but we’re somewhat light on SFs and 3&D wings are just so much more valuable than 3rd string backup PGs.

I guess I would’ve kept Plowden over Beekman at the end of the day based on what we’ve seen. Maybe they’ve seen summer workouts behind the scenes that lead them to think otherwise.

Probably involves some promises to Spencer and Beekman, right?

They invested $$ and a draft choice to acquire Post. We have not yet been able to see much of what he can do. There must be something that they are interested in.

Similar thoughts for Beekman... and a defensive guard is a real need IMO.

Plowden showed some things.... though maybe similar to Wiggins and Kuminga....and Summer League performance is not necessarily an indicator of NBA readiness.

I 'd say that Spencer would have been the safest option to waive.

The only thing is that we're super deep in wings now (Melton maybe, Hield, Waters, Wiggs, Kuminga, Moody). I don't like the move (I probably would have gone with Spencer's spot just because I'm not fond of his game), but I'm guessing that's the logic.

I'm wondering if there is some weird financial angle ... not about saving money, but rather a legal way to pay these prospects more than G-league salaries for a while (maybe there is some two-way 'vesting' after a month or two?) so that we could throw them some cash and then stash one of them in the G-league for most of the season.

Since the 2-ways don't count against the cap, they are the only real way we have to pay these fringe roster guys until the end of the year.

But, if the Dubs don't come up with some unusual arrangement to keep all four of them, it's hard to see this as anything other than an offseason mistake.

Expand full comment

Agreed. Weird move. Maybe they’re confident they can sign Plowden to that two-way.

Expand full comment

If he comes to camp he will still have a chance to show them what he has. Summer league was great but it was summer league. I am glad they signed Post. I guess they are more concerned with point guard depth which is probably wise considering their roster.

Expand full comment

But now that Plowden doesn't have a two-way contract, he might be offered one from another team and end up at their training camp instead

Very true but honestly Plowden is not going to make any meaningful difference unless he undergoes a one in a 100 transformation.

This. We're talking about the #16-17-18 players, and if we are relying on any of them, we're in trouble.

I thought Spencer would be aced out because he's 28 and hasn't proven he's an NBA player. I liked Plowden in Summer League, but that doesn't prove a lot about how he'll play against NBA competition. He's 26 and has never played in the NBA. If he goes elsewhere, he'll still be fighting for a 2-way. Here he'd be directly competing with Moody, Waters, et al. for minutes, and I'd rather see those guys get the minutes.

So while I might have waived Spencer, I'm okay with this move.

This is the main point: few if any of the mentioned players should receive actual playing time outside the G-League and garbage time.

I suspect if we put Post against Edey (MEM), we’d be swiftly relieved of any 7ft stretch-big delusions (hope I’m wrong about that tho).
