Even though it makes sense for the team, still sad to part with Paschall, and "top-42 protected" is pretty weak.

But yeah, feels like we're pretty thin at the guard spot, especially guys who can handle and create shots. GPII and Mannion both feel like close but not quite rotation guys there. Would be nice to have a third guy besides Poole and Steph who can break the paint in half-court sets.

Expand full comment

I know Mannion has been good with the Italian national team but I dunno... I suspect he's still a year away from helping us much. I'd like to be wrong.

Nico, against Serbia, looked like Trae Young. Then in Japan he was inconsistent. I agree: he needs to mature, one season in G-league is ideal

2026 2nd round pick top-42 protected? Can you imagine the mess, since the league teams won’t be 30 anymore? Btw… bye bye Paschanimal, love.

There's still the matter of Oubre's slot, isn't there? Or, did I miss something?

Expand full comment

We could be surprised but that slot appears to be going away because it warps the budget into the next galaxy.

Expand full comment

Unless they sign and trade Oubre for a TPE to be used later.

Expand full comment

True. Of course we'd have to pay Oubre enough to make it worth his while and make a deal somewhere he wants to go.

Expand full comment

Manion is 2-way, I think.

Expand full comment

We're assuming Mannion will be 2-way but as I understand it the 2-way players are not signed yet.

So barring changes, that looks like Lee will be our starting two till Klay is ready, and we are real thin off the bench.

Going to feel a lot like last season I think, with lots of heroics needed by Steph on the daily (nightly?)

Expand full comment

We have more flexibility than it looks like from that roster listing though. Any combination of Klay, Lee, Wiggins, and Moody can play 2/3. JTA, Kuminga, and Porter can play 3/4. Dray is a 4/5 and can defend smaller players.

Expand full comment

I’d try Poole as a starter. Plus, with Moody at 2, JTA at 3, make room for Quese

Expand full comment

I think they REALLY see him as a Lou Williams type off the bench. There’s already playmaking from Steph and Dray in the starting lineup. Lee complements that with better 3&D.

Expand full comment

I feel like some combination of Poole/Wiggins can fill in backup duty at the 2 spot behind Lee... playing big or small... and/or give whoever is the better defender out of Moody/Kuminga some run. It'll be ok, I think.

Expand full comment

yep. if OPJ is healthy to start, OPJ and JTA can fill up SF minutes and the Klay load can be shared among Poole, Wiggins, Lee and a sprinkle of Moody. I'm okay with Poole and JTA logging big minutes, and give Lee some credit. He can hold is own for some long stretches. Not a difference maker, but he knows what he's doing.

Expand full comment

Yeah, I got hopes for Lee, Poole, and Wise...

Warriors are not crossing that 200 million dollar repeater tax threshold. At this point realistically I can see them using a portion of the mle on Andre and the other portion on Aaron baynes with hopefully an exception onOubre and call it a day and I would consider that a very successful offseason

Go back two years and the Warriors had to basically rebuild an entire rotation around the core. They spent a lot of minutes the last couple seasons trying to find guys that could be very cheap, solid rotation guys or better. I think successfully, they've got Lee, JTA and Poole (who can be better).

But the labwork is over. I think one of the conversations that probably was had with Steph, Klay, Dray is we are going to keep our lottery guys unless it's the right deal. But otherwise there's no scholarships left for guys who don't know their role on a winning team yet. They need the roster filled with proven vets or those truly high upside guys.

You can sell them that Kuminga could be the next Kawhi, and that's great for them either in a couple years or as a nearer term trade asset. You can't sell them that Smiley is the next Bjelica. Just go get Bjelica.

Paschall is better than Smiley by a long shot, but I'm just not at all surprised. Utah is actually a nice place for him to go develop, but it was a tough fit for him here.

Expand full comment

So now we're down to one of our 3 picks from 2 years ago. Honestly didn't think Poole would be the one still standing after his first season.

Maybe we did do it for the money..

https://twitter.com/BobbyMarks42/status/1423032539522949121?s=20

Good description on how rigorous the repeater tax is:

GSW tax bill

Before: $184.8M

After: $172.9M

Moving off of $1.8M in salary saves $12M

Expand full comment

Of course we did. Lacob hasn’t been shy about this. He’s saying uncle in all caps. Letting vets go rather than resigning them is the way of the future, unpess the team is winning championships and filling Chase in the process.

Expand full comment

:eyeroll

Expand full comment

Doubtful. You think we're leaving the roster spot open? That's the only scenario where it saves money. Paschall was making peanuts.

Expand full comment

a) wouldn’t shock me b) it was more a reference to holding on to him after this year

Expand full comment

It should shock you. As Crusty Quips notes below, they're likely to lose money on the deal, not save it.

I don't get point B. Can you elaborate?

Expand full comment

I don't think it is the money as much as it frees up a roster spot that can be used for veteran that is a better fit.

Expand full comment

And will possibly cost even more than EP (Vet min is like 2-2.5m as opposed to Paschall's 1.8m), which kind of pokes a hole in the "Lacob is scrounging for pennies" narrative.

Expand full comment

Vet mins are league subsidized after ~$1.7m
