17-2? How sad. To think we could have had Bradley Beale or Ben Simmons for Wiggins, Wiseman, Moody, Poole, 2 future 1st round picks and a George Foremen Grill. To think what could have been .....

Kinda OT: anyone remember what happened to the second round pick from this last draft that the Warriors got from the 76ers for the Alec Butks,GR3 trade?

warping the game, as usual

Good to see no [or less] hesitation / surveying the landscape by Wiggins in the last couple of games. Read and react. This ain't the frozen tundra.

more than anything, I haven't seen this guy smile like this in his career. he may be finally finding the inspiration in the game, the Warrior's game, that may unlock the competitor in him. I wouldn't bet the house, since I have been here less than a month and moving was a B., but he is poised to be the principle factor in winning a tough playoff game. with so much support around him, I don't see him withdrawing into his shell come playoff time.

Expand full comment

It seems like he's been doing his surveying thing still but now he seems to do it while he is moving down the court, as opposed to once he has gotten to his spot. A small adjustment that is paying big dividends for him

Expand full comment

Maybe he's reached a comfort level / better understanding of the offense with the team this year that he's never had before.

I think he’s just caught up in winning and, even as such an elite athlete, feeling something he’s never felt before

This E1P reminded me of the airplane diagram with the holes in it posted during the 15 win season. It was pretty clear that B-ball IQ and shooting were the cockpit (Aka the keys to the Warriors success) and for some reason the Warriors kept looking for athletic projects that they could train up.

This year, they finally put more plating around the cockpit going all in on vets who know how to play basketball who may or may not have it physically: Dre, Bjelica, Porter. This year seems like it has already helped Poole and Wiggins progress with the timing and trust of their passing and rotations more than all of last year too.

It’s glorious how quick the payoff has been, and hopefully Lacob and Myers have taken note how good it feels when they provide Kerr with basketball players rather than athletes.

The E1P’s have really been showing that payoff in slow motion this year so maybe we should get Meyers a subscription?

Nice. I am the biggest Meyers fan and think we should look at last year's free agents in context. 1. the free agent hits we were all hoping for vanished the minute Klay went down. GS was no longer the Golden Ticket to Trophy hoisting. 2. Bazemore? Amy team should be happy to have him. As for GS, one of Curry's best buds, solid defender, a guy who could disrupt the tempo of the game with his overzealous style of play, for better or for worse. 3. Oubre? In the darkness that enveloped GS after getting the news about Klay hours before the draft, Oubre was a Joe Lacob Hail Mary, in which he tried as best he could, by opening his wallet, to temper the devastating reality that just hit the organization. At that time, Oubre was arguably the best wing on the market in the price range available to them. 4. Wannamaker? It's a crap shoot whether or not a player can adapt to the GS system. And I would put Wannamaker on Kerr more than Meyers. Kerr still has some old-school NBA DNA, and it seems like he has always sought to have at least one traditional point guard on the roster.

So, the moves the FO made this year look to be immaculate, maybe the best off-season player acquisition by any team I have ever seen. But it's not like they were stupid last year. Last year they got dealt a rough hand and there was no winning. This year, they got dealt a royal flush. My point being, I have the same faith in the front office this year as I did the year before. There are circumstances out of the GMs control, so they can only make the moves they can make. In the end, I think the Warrior's philosophy is, has been and will continue to be fairly consistent, with the occasion miscue. Whether or not the Warriors have a successful off-season or not has more to do with circumstances. Andre, Belly and OPJ ALL agreeing to Vet Mins are 3 signings completely out of Meyer's control. The players chose us, not the other way around. We drafted who we drafted based on who had been drafted before our turn.

In the end, we can only judge the FO on what decisions were within their control, realizing that 90% of them are not.

like your handle by the the way. ;-)

Javale has been absolutely killing it with the Suns.

absolutely love him, he never seemed to catch on with Kerr for some reason (maybe, his embodiment of the athlete/stoner ethos), and I quietly cursed the circumstance that we didn’t have him (over Damian Jones) on the last title run, might not have come up short against the Raptors if Curry had him as a target out of the box and one, always thought his touch around the rim was unsurpassed, he had a thousand different ways of putting the ball into the basket

A key detail about the Steph/Poole high to low five: notice the alignment of their elbows. These guys are all about the fundamentals.

Thanks for these awesome breakdowns! The end of the half play is just nasty. If they have that on film for teams so that the Draymond 4 on 3 vs the Steph cut back has defenders taking extra time to process how will anyone stop this team?

Loved how OPJ really stood out as a good basketball player in those breakdowns too. Soooo glad the Warriors decided to go for basketball brains over athletic brawn this year!

Great wrap up, as per usual! I think all the strength of schedule talk is baloney especially this season. Wouldn’t it be cool to see the Eastern Conference just flip and teams like Boston fall to the bottom while up and comers like Charlotte start showing up in ECFs ( I really like how Charlotte is constructed)

Seems to be happening on its own.

Charlotte looks dangerous, and they keep getting better.

At what point to we guarantee Payton’s deal and lock him through next year?

I’m having a really tough time seeing someone get bought out who would be more help than GP2.

would he take a minimum extension for next year? maybe this is massive homer bias, but easy enough to see him getting MLE money next year if he hits the market…

That first play, Dame could come over and contest Poole's shot, but off-screen to the right is Stephen Curry. If Dame rotates off Steph, nobody else is close and he'll get a wide open three. Dame is caught between a rock and a hard place and chooses to stay in Steph's vicinity so Poole takes and makes the open three. Gravity at work.

Actually, the more I look at that Cavs 2017 opening roster the more it resembles the current Lakers. D Rose, D Wade, and Isiah Thomas were all veteran guards who in theory would make for a deep and dangerous roster but none we really/productive for Cleveland.

OPJ has just done a great job of quietly going about his business and helping the Warriors win without anybody (non-Apricot) actually noticing he is on the court. Nice to see him get some props.

This is a dream scenario for his skill set; lots of open shots and lots of help for him on defense when his giraffe legs can’t keep up with a speedy driver.

LoLakers…Maybe they should fire their coach like the kings. I don’t think LeGm has the assets or picks to trade half the team like that 1 year in Cleveland

Expand full comment

He basically already DID trade half the team. But he traded it in a pre-emotive strike to try and strengthen the team from Day 1 of the season. Great idea… unless the guy you’re trading for is as poor of a fit stylistically as Westbrook is.

That’s what’s mind Boggling right? LeBron has high bball IQ but then goes and gets WB

I know this is crystal ball stuff but I can’t wait to see Lebron’s machinations in bringing Bronny to the Lakers to play with him

Expand full comment

I think Lebron jumps ship first so as not to have Bronny join a team Lebron torpedoed for the next few years.

Expand full comment

That’s what acquiring Westbrook was about. Ensuring they have the right pick to get Bronny. LeBron’s goals have changed!

Expand full comment

Bronny should not even be drafted. No team will waste a 1st. Lakers can easily acquire a 2nd round pick if they don’t have one

Expand full comment

Is he really not all that good? Genuinely asking cuz I don't watch highschool/college hoops

Expand full comment

He averages 6.3 points a game and .3 rebounds.

Ouch didn’t realize they don’t have a pick complete control until 2025

But aren’t some of those pick swaps with the Pels? Who are a dumpster fire?

Expand full comment

Ah I see what you mean, that after the pick swap they still have a (worse) pick to trade?

Bronny will be middle aged before they draft again

Those Lakers 1st round picks are going to be pretty good after Lebron leaves… and it might even be decent starting this year!

Ironically, of course, that mid season roster shakeup was mostly a disaster. Yes, Cleveland made it to the finals but really missed Crowder (and maybe D Wade) against GSW. They had no wing defenders left to slow down KD or Steph.

Both Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr. turned out to be valuable NBA players but clearly not difference makers for the 2017-2018 Cavaliers.
