BTW, with Big James' ongoing growth, we have big plans to expand the bar on Wiseman Island to be a complete bar and grill, with great eats. In addition to the sort of food you'd expect at a high-quality sports bar and grill, The Chef's Curry will be featured, as well as Captain Klay's Fish Special of the Day, Oakland BBQ, pasta with Donte's Big Ragu sauce, PBJs, JK's Congolese GOAT stew, and Draymond Green salads (available with very hot peppers that are guaranteed to draw a technical foul). We'll even have pancakes with Canadian Maple Jordan syrup — always nice! Want dessert? We'll have Kevon's #5 Flavor Pound Cake! The bar serves great Big James Slammers of course.

I can’t believe nobody has praised Ty Jerome for NOT giving Steph the high five. Clearly Ty noticed Steph was recklessly sticking out his left hand that is obviously attached to his left wrist, elbow, and yes - shoulder, that is injured. Seriously veteran move by Ty to avoid further shoulder aggravation.

Actually, wrong. Arm down by his side, strong. Arm up to give a high five, shoulder very vulnerable to injury.

I took one of those Carnival cruises you're always seeing advertised and wondering who the hell would go on something like that. Say what you will, hella buffet AND we caught a glimpse of Wiseman Island. I was belowdecks but my fam got some selfies.

Nothing to do with Wiseman, but two plays late in the game that really impressed me were from Klay. No, not flame throwing shooting, but instead passing to the open man (I think it was Lamb both times) for the wide open three. I love to see Klay exerting a little of his own gravity on a dive and then kicking to the open man for the better shot. Smart choices and Klay can have a significant effect, even when his own shot isn't dropping.

Of course, if teams see this happening and start giving Klay more room, then FlameThrower Klay will torch them to cinders :).

One was to Jerome in the corner IIRC

So many interesting angles to this game. Nice call to focus on Wise's improvement, who had gotten so much flak, some of it deserved. I hope he continues to get spot opportunities, but maybe one more stint in the G League once JMG is back?

One angle that popped into my mind regarding Klay's behavior: maybe Brooks was just the on-court proxy for Danny Green's ugly mug sitting on the bench, shown only briefly during the broadcast: "Guess who's out here playing and winning?"

He is going to be a completely different player this time next year, assuming he gets reps here or in the GL. His development track is headed upwards.

Scientists are reporting a sea level drop around Wiseman island, it remains to be seen if this was just a Christmas anomaly, or is an interesting long term development.

Good breakdown. If i were to hold the staff accountable on one thing and one thing only on Wisemans development, its not properly utilizing his lateral movement on defense. Say what you will about defensive positioning and rotations with Wiseman BUT i saw him more than hold his own guarding smaller quicker players from the onset in the G League. That straight drop coverage he was playing to open up the year was more counterproductive to our defensive sets IMO than just to have allowed him to switch and guard out at the perimeter.

Thus far in his career, he hasn’t looked too laterally quick until recently. I’d also say that having a laterally quick big in drop coverage is probably even better… can use lateral speed to contain and recover, while staying close to the basket for future rotations, help, and rebounding.

Oh and also that Aaron Gordon dunk is a prime example of recency bias. Quite a few people calling it one of the greatest dunks ever. Dude had a clear runway and a miniscule defender (by NBA standards) just waiting to take a charge. Still shoulda won that first dunk contest against Lavine (now my recency bias tells me that was the most entertaining dunk contest ive ever watched)

I find this play kinda revealing. Clarke comes over to set a screen for Morant but then they decide that they like the Morant/Moody matchup. Clarke moves over and begins to set a screen on Klay in order to get Bane open, which he probably would have since it is a 2 on 1. It is a 2 on 1 because Draymond doesn't even consider going over there, he knows Morant isn't going to pass the ball and just waits on the drive for an easy block off of a dumb shot. Bane doesn't even use the Clarke screen because he knows that Morant isn't passing that ball, if Bane was on the Warriors that would have been an automatic pass from Curry if the center was positioned where Draymond was at imo.

The reason no one has ever beaten the Warriors with hero ball is because of Draymond imo, he's way too smart for that.

Sidenote, Morant carries all the time and this move to explode by Moody was no exception. It's a lethal combination when you are as quick as he is because he can push the ball so far in front of him and explode forward once he gets his hand under it. I wouldn't care except they've decided to selectively enforce carrying against Poole and nobody else. And Morant does it damn near every play. What is Looney supposed to do here:

And who can forget this carry Morant used to get the upper hand on Wiggins in crunch time of Game 2 last playoffs:

Didn't even have to click on the carry to know which play it was. It was so blatantly obvious in real time.

Expand full comment

I get the feeling the carrying/travel calls will slow down as the season goes on, and then outright stop in the playoffs. The league loves to emphasize calling these things for appearances to start a season but then predictably abandon it once games start to become (or at least feel) more meaningingful

Ty Jerome is making the case that he deserves the 15th roster spot. Unfortunately he is also making the case, as is DDV, that he is worth more money than the Warriors can pay him but that's a problem for next year. Between those 2 guys and Lamb, maybe Bob Myers knows something about basketball after all.

Expand full comment

If Ty and Lamb keep playing the way they are (and the rotation minutes continue) then they will have to be on the playoff roster.

Prediction: Wiseman keeps improving. Ty and Lamb get roster spots. JMG gets cut.

Expand full comment

I believe JMG will be the last one to find his place on our team. I think Ty will remain on the 2 way this year so he can be our Cheeze Man and get his shot next year if we're priced out of the DDV sweepstake. It's likely Lamb will be the one to get the nod for the 15th spot if there's no last minute buyout candidate or a surprise trade materializes.

Expand full comment

I was going to say Lambs 65.5 TS, 41% 3, and savvy playing would make it hard (Lamb seems kind of like a JTA 2.0 currently). But then I realized Ty is 67 TS rolling with a 54/44/94 . And near 4 assist/TO ratio. Crazy! When everyone is healthy, Lamb seems more of a positional need, but hopefully can find a way to get both on the roster.

Expand full comment

Lamb seems more of a positional need... unless Wiseman, JMG, Kuminga, and Andre (who are already on the roster) supersede him. Of course, a guy who plays big and shoots >40% is pretty useful.

DDV, Jerome, & Lamb are looking like really good signings. My hope for JMG hit rock bottom a few weeks ago, but is recovering.

Expand full comment

Not that I think it would happen, but can Andre do a solid for the Ws if he retires?

Expand full comment

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by play big, but I think he makes the right rotations an awful lot more than you would expect for a guy with about 11 weeks in the system.

And, if you mean his tweener size allows him to guard a lot of different players, I completely agree.

I mean the tweener thing. He’s 6’6” but plays like a 4.

JMG was looking a lot better. In 9 games in December he’s sporting a 67.7% TS%

Expand full comment

Yup, is recovering.

Expand full comment

I'm pretty confident that Jerome will be on the Warriors next season as their DDV replacement, but who knows for sure.

Expand full comment

If he doesn’t play himself into a better contract… but maybe he doesn’t get better than the DDV 1+1 at above vet min.

Expand full comment

I don't think he will get the minutes to do that unless Curry's injury lingers longer than expected (or perhaps Poole gets hurt).

Expand full comment

Or he could keep his 50/40/90 & 4:1 AST/TO ratio in 700 minutes, get added to the playoff roster and have a few good outings… that would absolutely be enough for, say, NOP or MIN to bring him in as a backup or something… and there’s always Utah for the white dudes…

Expand full comment

Two-way players go to restricted free agency, and it's not clear to me that they will convert Jerome to a 15 man contract given that they theoretically have Curry, Poole, and DDV ahead of him in the rotation.

Really encouraging to see Wiseman stopping his dropbacks on defense outside the circle more often (see particularly 6:42). He would previously just keep giving ground until he was holding the photographer's bag off-court. They have clearly been working on "drop back and set" points for him. Looking forward to seeing what happens now when he gets a scoring center on him and whether he can hold those positions.
