My husband and I retired mid-2018 and could no longer afford living in San Francisco so we returned to my hometown Chicago. Two weeks later he was diagnosed with brain and lung cancer. After rounds of chemo and radiation, he was weakened, but insisted on going to the Bulls-Warriors game. Somehow he made it to our seats — and Klay went off for 14 threes. It gave him a thrill and a spark (me too) to carry on no matter what. I can also testify to DNHQ helping both of us to recover with joy. He is still okay after a couple of bumps in the road, thank God. I tried last night to get tickets when the Warriors are in Chicago in January — bundle up Warriors for a back-to-back with Milwaukee! Anyway, just okay seats start at $550!!! I wish the Bulls were still so bad that tickets were reasonable.

Wishing you both the very best of health and enjoying retirement. But I have a deep concern: if you're from Chicago, are you going to be rooting for the Bulls, or the Dubs? Your membership here depends on your answer, no pressure.

I have a dream...

- Spring '22 without lockdown

- Steph MVP

- Dray DPOY

- JP3 MIP

- GP2 All Star SDC winner

- WCF

- Wiggins Finals MVP

- Klay 30 pts in finals game 7 third quarter...

... and a Ring to rule 'em all.

Eh? ;)

I love the Wiggins Finals MVP wish - although I'd really like number 77 to get one this year. I think the ultimate goal should be for Curry to go down as a six-time champion without a finals MVP, with three more different players winning it, just because the narrative about "how much it matters to his place in the game" is so obnoxious in the first place. Besides the fact that it is voted on by an incredibly small and highly points-only and prior-hype-biased group of random media types, I get thoroughly annoyed of twit-heads arguing over whether Kyrie (or whatever player they think is better than Curry at the moment) could beat Curry one-on-one. Regardless of whether their players could win in Bird v. Jordan mode (doubtful, given Curry's otherworldly competitiveness) Curry is the best - and most unselfish - team player that ever lived, and basketball is a team game. What could show that more.

@Asher - Thanks for the crossword. I got about 8 at first glance. Now the hard work begins.

Pretty dope.

Also looks like you have ECE/software background. Yes?

You're welcome! No software background, but I have written previous crosswords if that counts for anything. Any computerish clues are just via research.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I had set an 11lb Turkey (frozen) in the fridge for 7 days and the bottom part never defrosted. Ran to Whole Foods to get a Turkey Breast and the top ended up overcooked and the bottom raw as hell. Corn this year is tough as nails, overliquified my mashed potatoes and ended up just butchering the cornbread stuffing. Thank God for the dubs. Had this been my Thanksgiving 2 years ago, I would have had a mental breakdown

I’m done after tonight. There is no reason to cook at this point when downtown is 4 blocks away and there are plenty of hotel restaurants hosting Turkey Day meals. Only reason tonight i cooked is because my mom is immunocompromised and I didn’t want to risk CovID on her but no more cooking

As you say, Daniel, no lead is safe from this team. This was the hallmark of our championship teams with our core guys. Without Klay and KD, they are still doing it. Why? Curry and Green with the right combination of support players and D. The Kerr system is a winner. You just need the right players to jump start it. Playing it through 4 quarters is enough to wear down teams, make adjustments, and hit overdrive. Without Steph, I'm not sure we can play at this level for a whole season even though the system is sound.

Theoretically, my only real concern is Phoenix. For 3 seasons, they've been building a winning team and presently, that 14 game winning streak is nothing to sneeze at. No one wins 14 games in a row that is not good, real good. So, there is our really big challenge that some will measure our team by. Even if we lost to them, it should not take us out of contention, alter the way we play, or convince anyone that we won't be victorious in the end. Plus, we have Klay to look forward to adding in to the already potent mix of talent, 2 way talent. These guys want to win and so do we fans.

The system is not the same without Steph to warp the you-know-what out of defenses, hit ridiculous shots which demoralize the opposition, and set surprising screens for the guys at the end of the bench. I'm sure the democratic offense where everyone touches the ball still has its merits -- who doesn't want to touch the ball? -- but as Durant once said, Steph /is/ the system in many ways. At the very least, he supercharges it big-time.

Looking forward to Phoenix. I realize these are just regular season games, but there's something special about demoralizing Chris Paul. It's a tradition.

Every system needs talent. I’m sure if Poole, Wise, Kuminga, and Moody have talent, they can use Kerry system to great effect

Philly game reminded me a lot of the Dubs/Rockets 2018 playoffs game 6. Dubs down 3-2 in the series after some very poor play in the final stages of the previous two games. Rockets storm out to 17 point lead after the first quarter. Klay gets hot and Dubs outscore Rockets 93-47 (not a typo) the rest of the way for a 29 point win to keep the series alive.

Dubs then followed up that game by getting down 15 points late in the 2nd quarter in Game 7 before rallying and watching the Rockets miss 27 consecutive 3 pointers en route to a nine point win.

Bottom line - with Steph, Dray, and (later) Klay, they'll never give up and they expect to be able to come back. Add a deep bench, and Dubs can rotate lots of guys in and out and stay fresh while wearing down their opponents and absolutely destroying them in the second half.

As thanks for the site, I have created a crossword puzzle for DNHQ. It builds off of the interests of the folks here. I enjoy making crosswords, and if you enjoy solving them, here ya go.

For those who follow such things, it is roughly a NYT Wednesday in difficulty. It can be found here: https://bit.ly/3cOvapZ

Expand full comment

Very nice. For those afraid to try it, it has clues to Warriors past and present, all of whose names you will know. Although I did have trouble remembering the roster of the 1948 Philadelphia Warriors... Kidding! Just kidding.

Expand full comment

Really great puzzle, similar quality level to an NYT crossword, and a little for the nerdy Dubs fans among us (like me). I'm impressed! I'd say between a Tuesday and a Wednesday.

I solved it, but I'm not sure I understand 10 across. Is it just the "luminary" part that's the real clue, and are Beijing, London, and Rio in the clue just to throw you off?

Expand full comment

Thanks for the praise. It is indeed meant to be NYT quality, I use their guidelines and have submitted to them before -- none published yet but a couple pending.

OK I made a file with the answers. Wasn't sure if I was supposed to do that. You can go look at it and I suspect 10 Across clue will make more sense, and any other help people need. I love how, as the season has gone along, it’s getting harder to identify which articles are from DDD vs DH. DDD writing has gotten more gold blooded, and Hardee’s writing leaned less into “challenge the doubters/haters”. A grades all around for DNHQ authors.

A double digit deficit for this team definitely brings on the greater focus/intensity, I’m not exaggerating when I say that the Warriors being up 20 is when I feel that pit in my stomach and start yelling at the TV for Curry to stop F ing around

After we get rid of the fouls to stop fastbreaks, let's get rid of this type of "defense"... I honestly hate it... there is no play on the ball, just walking that thin line between "being in position" and dangerous play.

Expand full comment

There’s always going to be a thin line. You have to draw the line somewhere… they did draw a literal line about 3ft away from the basket 😜

Expand full comment

Then move the line out further or something. Watching the defender slide under Antman was not enjoyable at all and rewarding "hurry, stand over there like you're at a urinal".

Expand full comment

I believe that should have been a BLOCKING foul. The defender doesn’t achieve legal guarding position until Edwards is already in the air. The timing is very tight though.
