Another fiery load of b.sh1t from across the ocean? A group called 'baba3' claims that Kerr has been 'fired' from the olympic team staff, because of alleged misconduct against Tatum, during the olympics. Source: a former player of the Celtics (Wanamaker again? Irving as a revenge on behalf of Klay?)

The Tatum fan club is so salty, they are looking for any way to spin it that "punishes" Kerr. I mean, fire the coach who just won a gold medal for playing, uh, LeBron and KD over JT. I think these guys wish JT really was a Tier 1A star, and he just isn't. And, I happen to like Tatum, he seems like a genuinely good dude and is extremely talented.

Yeah! He totally got fired and definitely wasn't just following through on his his plan to step down that he publicly announced back in November, 2023:

Yup just completely false. Kerr has been clear since he took over for Pop that he would only be the head coach for this 1 Olympic team and then he’d be stepping down.

Unless something major goes down, their only chance is if Hield exceeds expectations.

Anderson and Melton exceed expectations. JK, Wiggins and Moody exceed expectations.

It happened in 22 with Porter, Poole, Wiggins, Payton and Bjelica.

They really need some positive surprises from multiple guys and it can also come from guys I didn’t mention.

Of course the path forward is also much more daunting than 22.

I personally have zero expectations of them actually being a legit contender but believe it is possible.

They should be fun to watch at a minimum and that is something.

Expand full comment

or if one or two of them exceed expectations by a lot

Expand full comment

Don't forget Plowden imo.

They do need a lot to go right like with 2022 imo, I agree with that. The #1 thing by far to me is Curry surviving the season physically despite being the only guy on the team who can reliably create his own shot off the dribble while also having multiple non-shooters on the court at all times and (probably, although it doesn't have to be this way) playing with small backcourts that don't allow him to coast on the defensive end.

I think they theoretically have a very good defensive-minded roster and if Curry was in his 20s I would be higher on it but I think they are being pretty moronic with the load they are putting on his shoulders. The Lakers had gotten LeBron an AD at this point of his career, that's a big part of all the "look at what he's doing in Year 20" shit. The Warriors clearly know what they are doing is ill-advised given their previous comments on needing a second option and offseason pursuits of George and Markannen. I commend them for not making a bad situation worse with an Ingram/LaVine trade, but until they find the right trade it is still a bad situation to on a 36 year old to carry the biggest load of any superstar in the league imo.

Also if Curry does get hurt and Podz moves to the starting PG role, I'm curious to see the backup PG plan. It's why I assume Spencer is going to make the roster over Beekman.

Expand full comment

"The Lakers had gotten LeBron an AD" The Lakers have always had a big advantage: They are the #1 team in the massive and basketball-crazy L.A. market. They have always been able to finagle superstar bigs away from other teams, whether it was Wilt, Kareem, Shaq, LeBron, or AD.

Expand full comment

So given your premise that the Front Office knows they need a second superstar next to Curry so that Curry can rest more and not have to carry as much regular season offensive burden, I have to believe that the front office wants to see if both BP and JK can take enough of a step forward in terms of ballhandling/playmaking/scoring to fill that gap (esp. JK). If they can't, then they'll try to ship at least one of them off in a big mid-season deal to land a 2nd superstar to play next to Curry.

Expand full comment

It really does seem like they went from one too many point guards last year (Curry, CP, BP, CJ, LQ on a 2-way) to one too few this year (Curry, BP, and Pat on a 2-way?)

Could they live with SloMo at point forward and just put another wing/secondary ballhandler on the floor? I have to believe that's the plan, TBH.

I seriously hope Spencer doesn't get the nod because of his PG skills.

Expand full comment
Sep 9·edited Sep 9

Just seems like a having two corks for three holes type of issue to me. If you play both Draymond and Anderson for ballhandling then you have two guys who aren't really scoring/shooting in your frontcourt, something that is already a concern when Curry is playing.

I think the roster weirdness exists because they have guys on the roster who are only there because they want to keep their options open for a trade later in the season. Because they could have had this type of player if they didn't have both GP2 and Melton on the roster, for instance.

EDIT: This is also why I think Podz shouldn't start when Curry is healthy, line his minutes up to be the backup PG imo.

Expand full comment

I'm not sure Spencer at point is the bung for any hole.

At least to me, he doesn't seem to have an NBA level dribble (high dribble).

If he was out there, I'd just have someone pick him up full-court all the time, and make someone else start the offense. Which, with 2nd stringers in there, could be an issue.

This might be the first-ever use of 'bung' on an NBA chat site.

Expand full comment

> I'm not sure Spencer at point is the bung for any hole.

You might be right but he's what they have given the usage of multiple roster spots on duplicative skillsets

The NBA needs a ‘net scoring’ metric: points allowed by a player on the defensive end would be subtracted from points scored by that player on the offensive end.

So basically, if you drop a 3pt dagger on the offensive side of the court but then you let a player get by you with a quick first step for a 2pt layup, your net points are 1. Or if a player drives the paint and scores, but allows for a dunk in transition because they’re complaining to the refs rather than getting back on the defensive end: net points zero. Etc.

Sure, officials and the league would constantly tinker with the criteria of ‘points allowed’ to calculate ‘net points’, but that’s where the fun and drama live.

*I suspect folks could already do this with stats (advanced or otherwise), but it would be cool to see points-per-game (PPG) recalculated using net scoring.

Expand full comment

I like it in theory, but it’d be essentially impossible to dock players for defensive mishaps because it’d be pretty subjective measuring effort and so much assigning of blame requires knowing what a player is supposed to do in a particular situation, like doubling, switching, fighting over or under a pick, etc. This is why it would be fascinating to be a fly on the wall during a team’s film session.

Stats based on +/- are the closest thing to that over time, but aren’t reliable on a per game basis.

Expand full comment

"allows for a dunk in transition because they’re complaining to the refs rather than getting back on the defensive end" This ought to cost them additional points for poor judgement.

”Exceeding expectations” entirely depends on what those expectations are. An optimist may EXPECT Hield to hit 275 threes on 40% shooting while playing adequate defense. A pessimist may EXPECT him to hit 100 3s on 35% shooting while playing terrible defense. If the Dubs find themselves as contenders late in the year, I, personally, won’t be as surprised as you.

>>> their only chance is if Hield exceeds expectations.

I disagree. I’ve been saying all Hield needs to do is play the role Klay /should/ have been playing without drama last season; shot maker off the bench. I think Hield exceeding expectations is pretty far down the list of things that have to happen for the team to improve on last season and contend. This would be my Top-5 list:

1. Draymond avoids his Greenanigans and stays on the court

2. (or even 1a) Wiggins returns to something approaching his ‘21-22 production

3. Melton’s back issues are…ahem…behind him, giving them a GP2-ish defensive disruptor with offensive decision-making and shooting.

4. Kuminga, Podz, TJD and Moody build off last season and take reasonable steps forward

5. Looney returns to form. TJD relieves some of that pressure, but Looney has proven to be a key-but-underrated championship cog with his rebounding, screens and defense.

Expand full comment

If Hield does what Klay should have done last year I would say that is greatly exceeding expectations.

That along with what you listed would be massively exceeding expectations as a team.

Point being they simply are not good enough if all the players play the way they played last year.

I think they they are going to surprise as a group. They also need to be healthy. Duh.😊

I might flip 1 and 2, just because we have Slo-Mo to run the offense at PF, and TJD to play at center, when Draymond sits (either because of Greenanigans or injury).

On the other hand, unless Kuminga has take a very large step forward, I don't know that we have anyone who can be as good a two-way player as Wiggs at either wing spot. Kuminga's on-ball defense took a bit of a step backward last year (IMHO).

OT. I really despise the name Valkyries for the new WNBA team in San Francisco. The word has serious implications of frightful women as servants of men. Women’s whose identity is described in relationship to the male they are attached to. In addition, they are all white, fair women who lead bands around and then are chosen to marry some powerful man.

Here is one description of the word:

“In Norse mythology, a valkyrie (from Old Norse: valkyrja, lit. 'chooser of the slain') is one of a host of female figures who guide souls of the dead to the god Odin's hall Valhalla. There, the deceased warriors become einherjar (Old Norse "single (or once) fighters"[1]). When the einherjar are not preparing for the cataclysmic events of Ragnarök, the valkyries bear them mead. Valkyries also appear as lovers of heroes and other mortals, where they are sometimes described as the daughters of royalty, sometimes accompanied by ravens and sometimes connected to swans or horses.” Wikipedia

What does this name of this have to do with San Francisco, or Oakland, or the east Bay, or even California? Not that I want them to be called the San Francisco Fog. But white warrior women with swords and long blond braids as handmaidens to powerful ‘warriors’ just won’t work for me.

PS as choosers and conveyors of slain warriors, this name does not have great implications for the GSW team this year :-))

Beyond that, the Kings colorway and generic, vaguely AI-generated brand also leave me cold. I don’t mind Valkyries (though your critique of its Norse origins is well taken) but the rest feels like a missed opportunity.

Too late for “SF Kamalas” (Sanskrit for lotuses)? When we fight, we win!

Expand full comment

My idea was “Golden State Wonders”. It doesn’t have Bay Area connotation, but they’d be the WNBA’s “GSW” and they could riff off the Warriors’ colors, fonts etc.

Maybe they wanted to create their own identity, though 🤷🏼‍♂️

Expand full comment

Hard to create your own identity when you are identified by your relationship to another. You have a identified the problem exactly.

Expand full comment

Given the assumption that they wanted a "female Warrior" name, I think Valkyrie is a fairly low-controversy name that a decent number of people will recognize as a "female Warrior" without really knowing any details about the name.

But, it is a good point that the whole idea of wanting a "female Warriors" team name is setting them up for a permanent second fiddle connotation, and perhaps they should have gone in a different direction.

In the end, hopefully it's just a name. I mean "Warriors" is perhaps the most bland uninspiring name for a team, but here we are.

Expand full comment

The opportunity to play “Ride of the Valkyries” during team introductions was probably too much to resist. To paraphrase Col. Kilgore, “It scares the hell out of the opponents…and the fans love it.”

Expand full comment

This would corroborate Juliet‘s statement:

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose

By any other name would smell as sweet."

Romeo was still wonderful despite his name. The Valkyries will be wonderful despite the connotations of their name. I think I get your meaning.

Expand full comment

On the other hand, if you’re a business with a REALLY valuable brand, you typically want to leverage that brand when introducing a new product. (Think Bud Light.)

Expand full comment

Yes, but you also analyze your target group when you release your ad and your brand. This is just basic marketing. WNBA games are populated by large numbers of women. Hopefully large numbers of women of all races, not just women with long blonde hair. Many WNBA players are role models for young girls, particularly young girls playing sports. I really wonder how many target groups they ran with people of all ages, races, and economic levels, evaluating this name.

Expand full comment

From what I’ve seen, it seems a lot of WNBA fans like the Valkyries name and are pretty high (and maybe a little envious too) of their introduction into the next season. And the definition of “Valkyrie” doesn’t have to be weighed down by its historic one. For precedence, there’s the casting of Black actor Idris Elba playing Heimdall in Marvel’s Thor movies, not to mention Valkyrie herself portrayed by Black actress Tessa Thompson. So the Golden State Valkyries can be something that stands apart from the literal mythology stuff, and no doubt will, as part of a league that highly values and prides itself on issues of representation, social justice, etc. to the point that it is a defining feature

Expand full comment

The transmogrification of meaning.

Expand full comment

I think you might be over-estimating how closely tied I envisioned. They’d definitely want to create their own identity, but using similar colors and fonts would tie to the team’s brand familiarity. (The biggest drawback I can think of would be fans just wearing their Warriors gear to games instead of shelling out for Wonders gear.)

Sure, the WNBA’s primary market is women and girls, but it seems this basketball-loving local market can take it to another level if they market themselves to demos beyond that, especially with the league’s new stars getting so much attention and becoming household names.)

Before retiring, I was a marketing manager at a Fortune 100 company, so I’m not completely talking out of my ass here. On the other hand, the team went a completely different direction, so what do I know? 🤷🏼‍♂️ (They probably have focus group feedback to support the name, colors etc.)

Well, I was only a lowly social marketer in the healthcare field. So I definitely do not have your experience with more sophisticated and/or rich people. But now that I think of it, I think you’re absolutely right. I don’t think the Warriors moguls have any interest whatsoever in middle income women, their possibly basketball playing children, or their grandchildren. I think the Golden State Warriors and GSW V are most interested in marketing their brand (taking it to another level) to the same wealthy population that they have got to come to Warriors games now.

Happily, Because the V will not have a bright new shiny penny, like CC, to lure people to games, games may actually be affordable for a couple of years. Let’s hear it for the middle class.!!!

"This article argues that the medieval Scandinavian valkyrie and shield-maiden, overlapping categories of warrior, are best understood as a third gender, a hybrid of masculine and feminine attributes. Found in a variety of texts, myths, and legends of heroes, for example, these figures are clad in masculine attire, armor, and weapons, and exercise masculine power as they fight and choose who will die in battle. At the same time, linguistic markers, literary devices, and other of their activities mark them as feminine. The article further argues that the shield-maiden who chooses a male spouse subsequently transitions from the third gender to the feminine gender. As a consequence, she loses many of the powerful abilities of a warrior woman, along with her armor and weapons. Furthermore, her subjectivity is altered so that it is founded and dependent on that of her husband. Someone here made the point that since Waters contract is guaranteed, cutting him doesn't free up space under the hard cap. I believe this is correct. Waters would still be paid, and (AFAIK) for the hard cap, every last penny counts, so cutting him doesn't change that.

So, it's either replacing Gui (contract is not guaranteed until 1/25), or a two-way, or SCW.

I think this is correct. Although if he really shines and they want him on the big team, I don’t see risking the loss of Gui as that big a price because I doubt other teams realize he’s the adorable Danny Rojas of basketball.

Either way, 50-and 90-year-old movie references are clearly why people come to DNHQ. 😊

> He should hit threes at an above average rate

Just a note about this; over the last six years, Hield has averaged 267 made threes at a 39.8% clip. That isn't "above average" that is "elite". Last year was a bit of a down year in terms of volume with him attempting only 568 and making 219 (38.6%). His 22-23 year in Indy is probably his peak; 288 made threes at 42.5% with an eFG of 59.6% and 61.4% TS. That's a great year for anyone not named Steph Curry. Hield is an ELITE three point shooter. He's also excellent for a guard at the rim, at around 15% of his attempts.

[Yes, everything else. But "hitting threes at an above average rate" is selling him short].

I wasn't following him closely last year, but changing teams and a reduced minutes role on both teams probably impacted his performance (certainly volume, of course). Even if he "only" hits 211 threes at 39% for us, that would be great.

To survive the Buddy Hield Experience, I’ll settle for above-average!

Also is there any empirical stats about players moving to the Warriors and increasing their 3pt% due to better looks because of Gravity and motion offence? Or is that just 'Here' say

Indiana had one of the best offenses in the NBA over the last couple of years and Haliburton is no slouch. I wouldn’t expect a big bump. His average would be great.

Other fun fact about Hield: he’s not that small. 6’-4” head-height but a rugged 220 with a 6’-9.25” wingspan (a quarter inch longer than Klay’s). Throw in three years younger than Klay and (presumably) more willing to play a bench role, and we’re talking a a possible mild upgrade on ‘23-24 Klay, much as I still miss peak Klay.

I don’t trust his D, but then I didn’t trust Klay’s, either.

I was actually a bit more excited about the Melton and SloMo signings than the Hield one, but getting all three of them (plus Waters) for less than we were paying Klay last season feels like a solid home run.

Regarding Hield’s defense; I hope he follows the Wiggins model and embraces playing with defensive effort, realizing it’s the way to more minutes on a Kerr team. I fear he follows the Nick Young model.

I just don't know if Hield has the BBIQ regardless of his effort

In my mind the “Wiggins model” I referred to doesn’t set a very high bar, BBIQ-wise.

Imagine if he could play, like, 80% of Jrue Holiday’s defense? He has a similar physical profile to Jrue, only bigger.

also imagining if I made like 80% of Steve Kerr's salary

Nick who?

It may be summer Dubs Koolaid talking, but I think there's a chance he cracks the starting rotation. He looked a little better on D last year, and certainly more engaged on that end than I remember. If he's just below average, rather than atrocious, I think the shooting might outweigh the defensive liabilities.

Ideally, you'd want a defensive wing to pair with Steph, but I could still see it. We really need some shooting beyond Steph in the starting unit.

This was pretty amusing:

Evan Turner saying that Kerr should be have been fired for not playing Jayson. Like, dude, let it go. Steve said 4 years ago when he took the job that he was in for one cycle, the same as Pop, but Celtics-land seems to think that he quit because he was going to be fired for, uh, winning a gold medal against the toughest international field ever. Sorry his playing time choices hurt your feelings, and yeah, I'm sure he was playing 4-D chess trying to damage Jayson's fragile psyche as his main approach to playing time, rather than playing the combination that gave them the best chance to win, which, again, they did.

I'm sure Steve is happy to just have one fan base up in arms about his decisions and doesn't have to worry about 2028 player egos.

What a douche bag Turner is.

Turner’s voice is disturbingly muppet-esque.

It's really next level that Jrue Holiday and Derrik White were glue guys who got a lot of playing time in important games. Steve playing 4-D chess indeed trying to make Tatum mad at his teammates. Also clearly Steve blackmailed Grant Hill into bypassing Jaylen Brown.

LOL.

> Evan Turner

Still salty how the Warriors routinely crushed Portland in the playoffs. Hey Evan, Terry Stotts is onboard, maybe it's time for you to let this go, hm? (Not holding my breath).
