After watching pre-draft tape on Trevion Williams, I like him even more. He profiles more like Dray, undersized, 7'2"+ wingspan, high level passer for his size and looks to pass, good ball handler, not a good shooter. If he gets an offensive rebound, you can be sure he will find a shooter. Yes, he has areas to improve, but if you can pass like that, you've checked off one big box for getting minutes.

If Andre comes back, with so much youth on the team, we're gonna have to call him Iggy McFee. (see: Nanny McPhee for those without kids)

> Defensively and athletically is where Williams presents questions, in terms of his ability to hang on in the league. For all his good footwork on the offensive end, on defense, he’s a liability away from the basket, both in drop coverage and on switches, and is generally a clumsy defender. Down low, he doesn’t have the bounce to defend the rim.

This doesn't sound like Draymond.

I'm a big Trevion fan! I don't know how to feel about this move though. I had already accepted that he's not a Warrior. If they let him go now it'll hurt even more. Hopefully he joins Santa Cruz.

I figure Andre retires now and Joe is gonna make him buy a ticket to get in the building, seeing how Joe lost $500,000 on Andre's podcast. lol

Trevion Williams? Hell yeah. Actually, that's the kind of guy I want as the 3rd string center. Someone who can grow with the team rather than someone near the end of their career. If not last spot on the 15, would love to have him on the other 2-way.

Expand full comment

If Mac McClung and Trevion Williams are battling for a roster spot - will they play 1 on 1? Can I buy tickets to watch? I was thinking about this kind of thing the other night - who wins in 1 on 1 between equally skilled guard vs center. I’m assuming the center wins due to rebounds. But if Curry is raining 3s all over a center maybe he can score enough points to it doesn’t matter.

Expand full comment

Kinda, sorta :) It that were Steph vs. I don't know who? Giannis, Anthony Davis?? (LeBron is too old now for this one) one on one right now, I'd give it to Steph no matter how big the center. (and hopefully Jordan Poole in another couple three years!)

Expand full comment

I think it’s clear the guard needs to be able to rain threes to stand a chance. The center will have a lot of easy buckets and putbacks. I also feel if you are playing winners outs it favors 2 point high percentage shots because you can get long runs. So I think the guard needs the rules to be losers out to keep it even. But if you are playing losers outs and Steph (or other three point shooting guard) starts making shots, I think they can take it. Especially if you play to some high score to win, like 100. Could be fun to watch anyhow.

Im still sitting at the bar on Wiseman Island, but I’m reasonably excited about Trevion Williams.

Something I notice in the weaknesses section of this video that actually makes me hopeful: he’s gotten a bad rap as a poor perimeter defender because he lacks the foot speed, but I’d actually suggest he just wasn’t taught defensive principles.

https://youtu.be/Jdby3kRv__s

Give him a few years around Draymond and Loon while playing with Santa Cruz and see if he can work that problem out. I just don’t believe footspeed is the issue for someone who’s as quick as he is with the ball on offense.

Good god that passing. He seems like a blast to play with. I want him on the team just to see him find JFK cutting to the rack.

Expand full comment

That’s a really nice video. I was getting very excited by the first half, sick passing off the block, decent post up moves, but wow that defense was terrible. It does really seem like he hasn’t worked on his defense much, the way he lunges with his upper body is really bad. I also read he came into Purdue at 325lbs, that’s a lot. Definitely need to keep that under control to switch onto guards. Good luck to him, I hope becomes a hall of famer!

Expand full comment

Give Trevion Mac’s plyo training regimen for bounce and quickness, plus Mac’s shooting skill and confidence, and he’d be solid. Or give Mac Trevion’s height and length and vision.

Heck, just merge the two. Together they are a very complete player. Science!

Expand full comment

Yeah, he took awful angles and spent a lot of time in no mans land. Nothing our coaching staff couldn't fix. They just need to remind him he has a 7"3 wingspan so he doesn't need to be Evan Mobley on every switch to disrupt shots

I didn’t watch any Purdue basketball, but a lot of people seem to suggest the problem was their scheme or lack there of. And in my extensive research (from that one link above lol) it feels like he’s just (over)thinking a lot — moving to do one thing then pulling up short to do another — which would support the idea that the scheme was either just really poor or convoluted.

I feel like Trevion is more of a Dray backup than JW. I think he could play WITH Wise in some situatuions ...

I hope T Williams impresses the crap out of everyone and makes the active roster or even on a 2 way. He's a Warrior legend in the making

Man we signed the wrong Celtics Summer League squad Center

Expand full comment

Maybe. Time will tell. I think Trevion's passing is on the same level as Dray. Of course the defense would fall off, but if carefully planned (so there wasn't an opponent who could abuse TW's lack of D), I could envision a lineup where Trevion is on the court with Steph in the few minutes where he doesn't overlap with Dray and that keeping Steph's offense super activated. I mean probably not this year, but his passing is just that good.

Usually defense can be improved significantly if a player will work hard. So there's hope.

Possibly Kabangele wanted to sign with BOS for a chance to not be the fourth backup center

Expand full comment

Yeah I jest sorta. Out of all the big men I saw in summer league, Kabangele was the one I pined for being given a chance at a two way roster spot with the Warriors (once Mawugbe flamed out). He was a bully out there.

I have little knowledge of Trevion other than a couple of youse boys liking him in a lot (and a couple of national sites projecting him to go 51 to the Warriors before they moved up)

Interesting bball story: Austin Reaves got nicknamed "AR-15" as a Laker rookie and is asking fans to stop using it, because he doesn't want to be nicknamed an assault rifle. I'm highly supportive and really would love it if sports got more demilitarized overall. But it's also a tricky thing to ask fans who support you to stop using the nickname they've been using. (Who here remembers Prince trying to get everyone to write the glyph instead of his name?) Story at https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/34280037/los-angeles-lakers-austin-reaves-looks-shed-ar-15-hillbilly-kobe-nicknames

If the Warriors were to give up their warlike, Native American-referenced name, what would be a good new name for them? Are there any unused apex predators? Any available, charming weather disasters? My favorite Bball name is the Mad Ants, but I can’t see anything like that happening here.

The term "warriors" is associated with tribal warfare but long predates contact with Native Americans. It comes from Old Northern French “werreior” (late 13th/early 14th century) which means “one who wages war.” But you knew that.

Zach Lowe podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/andrews-clark-and-mares/id986595124?i=1000570844108

First part is a chat with Kendra Andrews about GSW. Topics include:

- Amazement that some Warriors fans being spoiled complaining that Lacob is cheap for not keeping GP2 and OPJ

- Moses is ready, Kuminga needs minutes, Wiseman will get a chance

- Agrees with Dray saying they don't win 2017 without KD

- KD trade to GSW is dead due to high cost, not bad blood

- Nets are very low on Wiggins and Poole

- KD would never mess up his rep by going back to GSW

- Zach is annoyed that GSW got DDV, the perfect Warrior

- Also angry that the league let JMG go to GSW, another perfect fit

- Are they extending everyone?

- not fair that it's so hard to re-sign players that you drafted

More hot coffee. Are the Warriors going to spend the money they would have to spend to add Q Weatherspoon to the 15-man roster? Think about it. At 6-3, he is an undersized shooting guard. I like the guy, but he is like a poor man's Damion Lee. Add this as well: The minute the Draft ended the Dubs were signing another shooting guard to a two-way contract. 6'5" (6'10" wingspan) Lester Quinones, former teammate and roommate of our very own James Wiseman. The Dubs seem pretty confident in their new pick-up.

I don't believe the Dubs are going to use their 2 two-way contracts on 2 shooting guards. Don't get me wrong, Quinndary Weatherspoon is an NBA player. He is a fringe rotation guy, but he can play in this league. But the writing is on the wall wherein he needs to move up into the 15-man or look for other opportunities in the league. He certainly won't have a problem getting picked up somewhere given his national exposure last year. I mean, dude did get a ring.

But I believe it is gonna be out with the old Q and in with the new Q. On the bright side, this would open up a two-way for Gui Santos and who doesn't want to see that? Ok, it's Santos or McClung. But I prefer Santos' size.

That's my team. I will text Bob so he can get the paperwork done.

Current team, Q Weatherspoon looks for a better opportunity, Jordan Bell gets the 14th roster spot, Gui Santos signs the 2nd two-way and Mac McClung can play in Santa Cruz if he doesn't get another gig.

Jul 22, 2022·edited Jul 22, 2022

I think Q has a lot of potential and if he works on his game could be good because his defense is sound. More often you find guys who can shoot but don't play defense.

Expand full comment

But how good do you have to be defensively at that size to be really effective? And you got Klay, Moody, Big Ragu, all probably better defenders and Wiggs will even move down and pick up some 2s defensively. Q's defense is pretty good. But if Rollins and Quinones play well in training camp, it may be hard to justify keeping him on. Then again, the Dubs have a track record of allowing players like QW to develop. I just don't know where the bar is? What are they looking for from QW that says "okay, he deserves a spot on the 15-man".

Expand full comment

Timpf has a view that I'm not sure I share, but it is that perimeter defense is the most important skill in basketball, because if you can contain the initial attack, that prevents any collapse of the defense. Not sure but it's Phood for thought.
