Trade Poll 2024.2: Brandon Ingram for Wiggins, Moody, Looney and picks
Trade season has begun
I poll trade ideas. However, I do have some bare minimum standards.
The trade has to work in a trade machine. It is harmful to talk about impossible trades.
The trade has to be offered by a paid member of the media. This adds a very light layer of quality control to the ideas.
I am not endorsing any particular trade that I poll.
The Trade
Zach Buckley in Bleacher Report proposes this trade:
New Orleans Pelicans receive: Andrew Wiggins, Moses Moody, Kevon Looney, a 2025 first-round pick and a 2027 first-round pick (top-three-protected)
Golden State Warriors receive: Brandon Ingram
Golden State can't simply cross its fingers and hope [Wiggins] turns things around. Not when the clock is already ticking for the 36-year-old Curry. Maybe that motivates the Warriors, then, to swing for the fences and part with all of the above to add Ingram, whose ability to create offense for himself and others would be massive gets in Golden State.
Curry desperately needs someone who can consistently pull defensive attention away, and Ingram has that ability. The 26-year-old has gone three consecutive seasons of averaging better than 20 points and five assists per outing. Only 15 others can claim the same, and they're mostly household names, even for NBA casuals.
As for New Orleans, an early exit from this postseason could force the Pelicans to consider doing something different. The Pels might think they've taken the Ingram-Zion Williamson tandem as far as it can go, in which case they could entertain the idea of flipping Ingram for three plug-and-play rotation pieces and two future firsts to help them go star-searching in a separate deal.
Apricot’s Notes
GSW cannot aggregate salaries (because it is over the legendary second apron) until the next fiscal year starting July 1. To get under the second apron, they will probably have to waive Chris Paul. If not, they will almost surely have to renounce Klay Thompson. So this trade has the unspoken assumption that one of Chris Paul or Klay Thompson will be waived/renounced.
Brandon Ingram is under contract for 1 year / 36 million. Offense EPM: 1.8 (89 percentile) / Defense EPM: 0.3 (70 percentile) / Overall EPM: 2.1 (88 percentile)
Andrew Wiggins: Offense EPM: −0.9 (58 percentile) / Defense EPM: −1.3 (25 percentile) / Overall EPM: −2.2 (44 percentile)
Moses Moody: Offense EPM: −1.2 (52 percentile) / Defense EPM: 0.5 (73 percentile) / Overall EPM: −0.7 (62 percentile)
Kevon Looney: Offense EPM: −0.6 (63 percentile) / Defense EPM: −0.7 (47 percentile) / Overall EPM: −1.3 (54 percentile)
