So last night I decided to stop checking on Warriors free agency news every hour. I had a very productive day - but I missed the news about JaMychal Green by like 5 hours! Lesson learned... Seems like a good pickup - solid stretch 4 on a minimum. I've got my money that last years shooting slump was because he lost his rhythm at the 5 - and he's gonna knock down some shots for the dubs. Just when we thought Bob Meyers fell asleep at the wheel. Go dubs!
If Andre chooses not to come back and Pat Bev gets stranded in SLC, which one of these still [from what I can tell] unrestricted free agents should the Warriors sign:
Sato or Dozier could work (always liked Dozier's game, too bad he could never stay healthy… seems like a pattern in Denver to me), but at this point I think my favorite option would be Quinn getting a shot
So what’s up with Boogie? I know some of us here are an absolute no (waves to Sleepy) but still, I’m surprised he isn’t signed yet. I guess his pattern the last two seasons was to be signed after the season had started.
I don't care if it really doesn't make sense roster wise, PAT BEV COME ON DOWN! The world needs to see the duo of Draymond and Pat Bev talking that sh*t on the court. Teams will be gunning for us extra hard again coming off the title so might as well embrace the villain role
Pat Beverly is that type of player that you hate his guts.... until he is on your team. I mean, when we meet Ja in the playoffs next year, I don't mind throwing P.Bev at him.
I've always kind of equated Pat Bev to a gnat that won't get out of your face. Probably a nice guy but just annoying as hell. If he were on the Dubs, at least he wouldn't be in Curry's face. I could be persuaded.
It was asked below what happened to JaMychal Green last season. According to this year-end review article https://www.denverstiffs.com/2022/5/11/23066585/denver-nuggets-season-in-review-jamychal-green it was because they moved him from backup PF to backup C, where he struggled and replaced by Cousins, and Zeke had taken over backup PF, but then got hurt so JMG played more PF. Key quote:
“The expectations were much higher for Green this year than what ultimately occurred. Put in a difficult position and asked to play the center position, JaMychal really struggled, especially on the offensive end, to find his role for much of the year. When he slid over to power forward, things got better, but not so much that it put to rest any questions the Nuggets may have about his future in Denver. Zeke Nnaji outplayed him for much of the season, and had he been healthy post All-Star break, it’s possible JaMychal doesn’t play at all down the stretch.”
Sometimes stuff just happens in smallish samples? It’s not a tiny sample, but not a huge one, either. Steph shot .329 from 3 this January, in a much bigger sample.
This Curry dude is baffling. This past season he shot crazily well from 3 point land on Mondays (.433), Thursdays (.465) and Fridays (.419). Sundays (.293) and Wednesdays (.319) were disasters. So damn inconsistent. Clearly he shouldn’t be allowed on the court three days of the week. Needs to get traded right now for Seth Curry. #WastingSethsPrime
Hey that Curry dude missed some FTs during the playoffs too. Obviously he's no good in the playoffs. Probably have to throw in draft picks to get rid of him.
JaMychal will likely get minutes at center, just as Jon and Otto did last season. He’s a rugged, long-armed dude (7’-3” wingspan, 8’-11” standing reach) who can rebound (9.9 per 36, career, which is excellent for a guy who spends so much time on the perimeter).
Not sure about “magical” or “presto-chango,” but the dude has functioned as a stretch big for most of his career; and the plan is clearly for him continue to do so in Kerrball. How many of his minutes will be without Loon, Dray, or Wiseman on the floor (i.e. as the de facto C) remains to be seen, but I think we can assume it’ll be greater than zero.
I’d think of him as roughly halfway between Otto and Bjelica, position-wise.
I haven't seen this posted yet - it's only tangentially Dubs related.
The Toronto Raptors are signing guard Jeff Dowtin Jr. on a two-way NBA contract, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Dowtin Jr. had call ups to Golden State, Orlando and Milwaukee last season.
Another Warriors YouTube video with Mac McClung. This time they’ve got Gui talking about and sampling Brazilian food with Mac and Weatherspoon. https://youtu.be/8qiatNNsFnI They’re sure riding the Mac Hype Train.
OK, so I finally watched the actual vid. This just strikes me as a video of opportunity. The Summer Dubs social media team thought it would be a fun idea, and in addition to Gui, dragged in the two biggest names they could find who would say yes.
Now we only need Bob Myers to perform his Solo and get Poole and Wiggins to sign a fair extension, and the NBA is done for the next three years. What an odd way to waste Curry's prime.
By the way, I have seen some highlights of the greatest overseas shooter of all time, Oscar Schmidt, who closed his career at 50 with an unofficial record of 49.000+ points. What do you think, Curry has a shot at 51/50000?
They said his career was over in '13, didn't they? Poor kid. We all see how much every relocation, every cut, every fast break is painful... for those who guard him ;)
Yeah it'd probably have to be something really unexpected though like I don't know, both Patrick Beverley and Daniel Theis get bought out and are interested in joining the Warriors and also Iguodala wants to come back.
Or perhaps if they find out Rollins' injury is really serious and will basically keep him out a year, they find it easier to just stow him on the two-way and move Weatherspoon into the roster for the playoff eligibility? But it sounds like Rollins' injury stuff is more precautionary than anything.
Yeah, since they’re not up against any deadline, “Let’s make sure his foot is healed.” before committing two years of money (plus tax) to him seems prudent. The added benefit of your first point of being able to watch for FA’s is fortuitous timing.
Also, as I understand it, there's some arcane rules for teams over the cap about how long a contract can be for a 2nd round pick vs one signed using the TPMLE. Upshot is that they can lock him down cheap longer if they use the TPMLE rather than the 2nd round rookie exception ...
it's multi years vs. one year, I believe. Rookie min can only be used for one year contracts. If you want to sign a 2nd round pick for multiple years, you have to use TPMLE
Oh right, but the roster spot would be needed. Duh. So the remaining TPMLE would go unused, they'd just use roster spots 13, 14, and 15. Yah, lightning would need to strike.
Added bonus with JMG: the three teams that have let him go — whom he presumably would not mind sticking it to — are MEM, DEN, and LAC. Likely our three biggest competitors in the West.
Also: .610 career TS in the playoffs (49 games, 820 minutes).
I had them there at first, but felt like there was too much uncertainty with two stars returning from injury (rather than LaC who only have one), so bumped them down b/c of that.
I don’t fear Luka. At all. He needs to learn how not to be a total liability on defense before he can even dream of beating a championship level Warriors team.
(And Phoenix is mentally broken. I doubt they even get a 3 seed next year.)
I don’t know, they have a lot of talent. If CP3 is healthy and come out strong - going 20 and 2 in the first month of the season - they could have a good year. It’s amazing what winning can do to heal teams with issues.
But this is a super best case scenario. Much more likely is a glorious crash and burn.
I like JaMychal Green and I have for a while. I think this is a really good signing but I want to caution everyone that this is NOT the OPJ replacement. First of all there are no direct replacements and Kerr and the rest of the staff will try to design rotation based on what the players we have can do so combinations may look different. Second of all, the Warriors are hoping that most of the minutes played by OPJ, GP2, and Bejeliça will be filled by JW, JK, MM, and DDV (in fact they hope those 4 guys will play more minutes than the previous 3 to reduce the OG minutes during the regular season). If all goes to plan, JaMychal will not play much. Of course all will not go to plan and I think he will end up being great to have, but by design, he is slated for 12 most minutes on the team, and maybe 13th most if Rollins is what they hope he will be right away.
Edited to add: This is also why they will not be in a hurry to sign anyone else. They can't play everyone they have already and that's assuming PBJ and Rollins spend a lot of time in Santa Cruz. At this point adding guys that can't/won't play just costs them money. Pretty sure they leave 15th open. And if Andre says no to a spot I wouldn't be surprised if they left 14 open as well unless QW gets an offer better than a 2-way and they want to match, but I think their preference is to keep him on a 2-way at least for the 1st half of the season.
Taking a Snoop aphorism: 'The best plan is no plan'. Is very applicable to this situation. You put the players on the floor, see how they run. Plus some subs in, see how they run. Use your bench guys with different mixes and see how they run. JMG is not an unknown entity. That guy can ball and seeing that he has size as well as skills, is a big plus for the Dubs. He will push JFK at the very least for minutes and be a sometime replacement for Draymond. I wouldn't worry about him not getting minutes. He's already certified. It will be up to the kiddies to be so good that their minutes cannot be taken away. How likely is that? Personally, I am stoked about this news.
Curry (2283), Draymond (1329) and Klay (941) are all coming off light to very light seasons, minutes-wise. I suspect they’d like to keep Curry at about 2200-2400, but Klay and Green should play a LOT more minutes just for not missing 2/3 and 1/3 of the season, respectfully. Klay could easily eat up the equivalent of all of Porter’s minutes and his own and still play a light 2300 minutes.
With DDV eating up GP2’s minutes, it’s going to be hard enough to find minutes for the kids. So yeah, there’s not many minutes planned for JMG, but it’s still a great emergency veteran presence.
Klay might eat up OPJ minutes but he doesn't provide the same skills that OPJ had and also what JMG brings to the table. That 4 spot has been muchly improved, imo. I also wouldn't crown DDV just yet. Defensively, he looks good. Offensively? Much to be desired. His minutes will be dependent on game tactics at any given time. I'm looking forward to seeing him in a Dubs uniform but I really like our diversity going into the season. Poole is still a major factor and minutes eater. If he can gel with the bench, he will be earning 6th man awards for a while.
The numbers I’m throwing out are light minutes; much less than they’ve typically played throughout their careers. Their numbers were low last year because they missed so many games to injuries/rehab.
Looney should play less. In addition to OPJ, GP2, and Bjeli's minutes, Lee and JTA have minutes as well that will be going to the bench unit of DDV, JG, MM, JW, and JK. Not much left after that, but the rooks could each get a few hundred. I did a quick and dirty minutes calc further down the JG thread.
Looney played a lot of games, but only played 21 minutes per game. He’s fine at the 1700 he played.
I wrote about this a couple days ago. Even before JMG, the Warriors were out of minutes to hand out. In the scenario I described above, I had Moody replacing Lee and Kuminga replacing JTA. Those are a lot of low-leverage minutes. I think they’re hoping to be able to play them in bigger moments. This team really has shitloads of depth now.
I disagree with your numbers as too low for Curry and Klay as I think they’re both 2000+ guys. You think Curry is going to cut his minutes by over 20%. That’s almost 500 minutes you’re lopping off of what was a pretty light season (largely due to the injury). Klay used to play 2600 a season. Yes they want to manage his load going forward, but 2000+ should be light work based on how he kept looking better and better physically last season.
Yah, I could see that. I originally thought that, too. However, I think it would make sense to do that. I truly believe a Curry that plays 1800 minutes before the postseason will perform better than a Curry that plays 2500 minutes, as long as there's enough ramping up for postseason minutes load.
edit: yeah. I'm wrong (see Being's answer below). Guess they will wait for Andre to decide. If he's a no they will roster QW or some other cheap player unless a buyout guy they can't resist comes available.
That actually makes a lot of sense. LQ and QW on 2 ways until Andre decides. If he's a no, move QW to a full roster spot, and the intention is to always leave the 15th open, to fill in case of emergency.
I think there are contract/$$ reasons this won't happen, but from a development standpoint, Gui on the roster or at least a 2-way is probably a good idea (and maybe the 2-way $$ implications aren't as bad).
If Andre is a no and QW gets a roster spot, maybe Gui to the other 2-way...
I mean I'm fine with that. I just liked Gui's potential and I think with the 2-way they could give him a few minutes against real NBA teams and that can be really valuable for development. I guess if this other theoretical UFA was also someone potentially special (Trevion Williams 😜) ...
We still haven’t traded all the young guys and draft picks for Bradley Beal yet, which means we’re still WASTING CURRY’S PRIME!!!
Also, we didn’t trade James Wiseman for Cam Reddish or Alex Len yet.
So we’re still at an F. At least according to good ol’ Kelly and her ilk. Maybe if we do some of those moves and others she keeps calling for, we can get her to give our front office that B- we earned from her for last year’s title winning effort.
We're still a disgustingly functional franchise. Bob Myers doesn't deserve an A, he doesn't even put the minimum effort to break that lousy harmony and boring winning mentality. That way, we will have to surrender all gossip and drama titles and tweets to the Lakers and Nets THE COMING SEASON TOO. Unbearable.
Seriously, though, what a weird series that was. Kind of like the Finals this year actually, with the massive blown lead and some tight games, but a 6-game win anyway.
I really like the JaMychal Green signing. I feel like he’s another guy who still has left in the tank and could thrive in GS. As good an Otto replacement as we could’ve hoped for
JaMychael Green was an excellent signing but until he locks down Tatum like Belly did I won’t be impressed
Bjelica Jedi mind tricking Jaylen Brown into dribbling off his own foot for the Bjelica steal was advanced defense, tough to replicate.
Look OPJ has more talent than JMG. OPJ was the #3 pick and had a $100M+ contract. But in terms of actual production on the Dubs?
Per 36 OPJ last year: 13.3/9.3/2.4 on .464/.370/.804
Per 36 JMG career: 13.6/9.9/1.6 on .472/.366/.785
So last night I decided to stop checking on Warriors free agency news every hour. I had a very productive day - but I missed the news about JaMychal Green by like 5 hours! Lesson learned... When does Bobgod ever sleep again?
Things take time
If Andre chooses not to come back and Pat Bev gets stranded in SLC, which one of these still [from what I can tell] unrestricted free agents should the Warriors sign:
A] Isaiah Thomas
B] Rodney Hood
C] Avery Bradley
D] Deandre Bembry
E] Tony Snell
F] P.J. Dozier
G] E'Twaun Moore
H] Elfrid Payton
I] Ben McLemore
J] Jeremy Lamb
K] Tomas Satoransky
L] Wayne Ellington
Or name your own preference
Probably Sato, of that group. Didn’t know he was available. (Edit: signed a 3-year deal with Barcelona, so apparently is not).
I mean remember the OGs wanted Avery Bradley last year (over GP2) so let's go with that.
Hmmm. Hm. Ummm...
Sato or Dozier could work (always liked Dozier's game, too bad he could never stay healthy… seems like a pattern in Denver to me), but at this point I think my favorite option would be Quinn getting a shot
I would opt for adding QW to a full contract. But if that doesn’t happen, then I’ll take Satoransky or Elf Payton
Russell Westbrook on a buyout
Great fit in motion offense
It becomes im - motion offense
More than motion!
Hahahahaha Hahahahaha Hahahahaha
I'll veto that on 'not a cultural fit' grounds. lol
Dope? As in weed? Or dope as in heroine? Or dope as in some enhancer? I dont know the story behind this
He was waived by a G League team in March. Is there reason to think he can still play?
So what’s up with Boogie? I know some of us here are an absolute no (waves to Sleepy) but still, I’m surprised he isn’t signed yet. I guess his pattern the last two seasons was to be signed after the season had started.
I think the demand for bigs who can't stretch the floor and can't defend is fairly weak.
Boogie can stretch the floor tho
Not well. Career 3P% of .330.
I don't care if it really doesn't make sense roster wise, PAT BEV COME ON DOWN! The world needs to see the duo of Draymond and Pat Bev talking that sh*t on the court. Teams will be gunning for us extra hard again coming off the title so might as well embrace the villain role
I've been hankering for Beverly for years, would love to nab him.
Fits perfectly into our system.
Yes, there’s no chance of this happening. But it would definitely be fun to see Bev play with the Dubs.
This is a hitherto unconsidered POV. I am fully on the PB train now! Who cares about the minutes? What matters is entertainment factor.
Interesting since I'm sure he'll be asked to play some center here.
I'm not sure that quite explains his excessive drop in 3P%, though.
Sometimes stuff just happens in smallish samples? It’s not a tiny sample, but not a huge one, either. Steph shot .329 from 3 this January, in a much bigger sample.

clearly upset about missing church
What are you talking about, the Chase Center IS church! At least, it's sacred ground.
Hey that Curry dude missed some FTs during the playoffs too. Obviously he's no good in the playoffs. Probably have to throw in draft picks to get rid of him.
Nervous… folds under pressure.

Dowtin > mcclung, chiozza, mannion
I had read that somewhere in the last 24+ hours. Don't recall him playing much on the Dubs before they gave his 2-way to QW.

no pão de queijo?
Cute kids.
I keep saying, if Gui ever makes it to the big team, he’s going to be a heartthrob on a Oubre/Theus level.
Already is.
I could see Mac on a two-way over Gui or even LQ.

Curry isn't playing overseas. He's golfing after he can no longer play in the NBA.
That's what I meant. With the shape he's in, he may storm the 40 and go straight for the longest career ever
But but they said his ankles would give and retire early (more of a Laker fan wish)...Oof
They said his career was over in '13, didn't they? Poor kid. We all see how much every relocation, every cut, every fast break is painful... for those who guard him ;)
I mean he's broken 100x the number of ankles of NBA defenders in the years since then.
Does anyone understand why RR isn't signed? Is it just that he didn't pass his physical, or is there some other reason it might be held up?
I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that the reports of the Dubs trying to sign him with what's left of the TPMLE are the plan.
They are waiting to see if any opportunities arise where they need to put him on a two-way, I assume. Don't think it is likely though.
That makes a lot of sense.
Yeah it'd probably have to be something really unexpected though like I don't know, both Patrick Beverley and Daniel Theis get bought out and are interested in joining the Warriors and also Iguodala wants to come back.

So pulled from my butt West rankings:
S Tier: Dubs, 'nuff said.
A1 Tier: Mem, LaC
A2 Tier: Den, Dal, Phx
B Tier: T-Wolves, NoP
C Tier: LaL, Por, Sac
D Tier: OKC, SAS, HOU, UTA
Besides Dubs, no doubt that Clippers, Grizzlies and Nuggets are the best in the West.
Mavs lost Brunson. Suns can be good for RS, but have no chance in PO
Minnesota can win a lot of games in RS, but like Suns are not a threat in PO
I think the Nuggets belong in A1 tier tbh! With Jokic/Jamal/Porter they'll have three 20 ppg scorers along with KCP/Gordon who provide defense!
I had them there at first, but felt like there was too much uncertainty with two stars returning from injury (rather than LaC who only have one), so bumped them down b/c of that.
Your rankings stink! They actually look pretty good, but you should’ve washed them off before sharing them with us.
Do you play Elden ring? 😁
lol. Tiers are pretty standard across all sorts of games?
Btw i agree w ur rankings here. Spot on 🎯
That they are. Your scaling above is actually the weapon tier scaling...so i had to know! Lol
I actually dueled a player named Being just the other day so i was genuinely curious 😂
Luka says "Hi!"
I don’t fear Luka. At all. He needs to learn how not to be a total liability on defense before he can even dream of beating a championship level Warriors team.
(And Phoenix is mentally broken. I doubt they even get a 3 seed next year.)
Ha, yeah. Booker too. But I think Denver, Memphis, and the Clips are still the three teams I fear the most.
Yah, I think Phx is a broken team after the DA drama and the playoffs last year. I don't count them as a serious threat next year.
I don’t know, they have a lot of talent. If CP3 is healthy and come out strong - going 20 and 2 in the first month of the season - they could have a good year. It’s amazing what winning can do to heal teams with issues.

I haven't thought of that jingle for decades.

Why should guys reaching 33-35 years of age play more minutes in the regular season?
The numbers I’m throwing out are light minutes; much less than they’ve typically played throughout their careers. Their numbers were low last year because they missed so many games to injuries/rehab.
Let's face it; injuries are likely to happen again. Hopefully not severe.
Here's my quick and dirty list from earlier. Columns are games, mpg, tot min:
Stephen Curry 60 30 1800
Klay Thompson 60 30 1800
Andrew Wiggins 75 33 2475
Draymond Green 60 30 1800
Kevon Looney 75 20 1500
Jordan Poole 75 30 2250
Donte DiVincenzio 75 20 1500
Moses Moody 75 20 1500
Jonathan Kuminga 75 20 1500
James Wiseman 75 20 1500
JaMychal Green 75 15 1125
This would be pretty good. And would leave <1000 minutes for garbage time for the end of the bench.
Exactly ...
aren't they required to have at least 14 players on the roster?
Gui! But realistically QW.
I think Gui just stays in SC and they keep his draft rights. They'll sign some other UFA for the second 2-way slot.
I mean I'm fine with that. I just liked Gui's potential and I think with the 2-way they could give him a few minutes against real NBA teams and that can be really valuable for development. I guess if this other theoretical UFA was also someone potentially special (Trevion Williams 😜) ...
I wouldn't mind having Weatherspoon on the roster.
It's 14 except for a 2 week period when they're allowed to have 13.

So signing QW as a 2 way to save cap space on the 14th roster slot can't happen.
Yah, by my back of the envelope calcs below, I have him penciled in for 11th most minutes on the team, 75 games, 15 mpg.
[EDIT: deleted a section on keeping QW as a 2 way inlieu of vet min]
Question: if they keep QW on a 2-way, what's the deadline to sign him to the main roster where he would be eligible to play in the post-season?
Without looking it up, I recall it's like Jan 15.
So at this point, how do we grade the front office's offseason?
Are they at a B+ yet?
B is a GOOD GRADE!!!
Nah.
LOL.
Unbearable.
By the way, BM just got my A+ ;)
That’s an impressive grade for a bowel movement
that's good :D
I guess this rules out Durant's return:

Seriously, though, what a weird series that was. Kind of like the Finals this year actually, with the massive blown lead and some tight games, but a 6-game win anyway.
I really like the JaMychal Green signing. I feel like he’s another guy who still has left in the tank and could thrive in GS. As good an Otto replacement as we could’ve hoped for
