Ayton is listed as 7-0 on BB-Ref (which now typically lists heights without shoes),and QP by the eyeball test in last nightโs game was clearly at least an inch taller than him standing side by side. So yeah, QP ainโt no 6-11!
Yesterday I predicted about 20 minutes per game for โGrandpa Alโ Horford, thinking heโs old and needs to be treated gingerly. Today, Alc speculated that Horford might have had a minutes restriction of 25 per game last year. I looked it up. He only played 42 games, but logged some minutes:
With the Dubs' depth this year (barring major injuries), I think "games played" is more important than "minutes per game." To expand the rotation and keep everyone fresh, I'd like to see the Dubs consistently give one of their four old vets (Steph, Dray, Horford, Butler) a night off. If they each played 65 games this year, they'd still be eligible for awards, and would likely have a lot in the tank for the playoffs. I'd much rather have Steph play 35 minutes a game for 65 games than 27.8 minutes a game for 82 games (same amount of overall minutes). This would give key rotation players like Moody, Post, JK, Melton, Podz, and Santos lots of opportunities to log 30+ minutes in a game.
I think that makes sense, but also feel like I've seen comments from players about how a game day off is hugely more restful than two games at reduced run
I'm interested to see what Stackhouse is cooking up. Last year we started with a scheme that involved a lot of help coming over to funnel attackers into trouble, but it seemed like the league figured it out and learned to swing the rock back over to the open man, so we had to use it more sparingly (right?) But with this roster we can have both rim-protection and elite point-of-attack defense on the floor at all times... so maybe we'll see a custom-designed scheme for every lineup we encounter? It might be fun to try and guess who Stackhouse has decided should be allowed to shoot right now, and what shot they should be allowed to take :) I thought I saw something going on in the first half where Lakers were getting into trouble at the top of the key a lot, but I don't have the BBIQ... was I just seeing hussle?
DANIEL, Last season, when the absence of a consistent perimeter shooter-scorer at SG became obvious, I did not know MOODY was playing hurt when I suggested he was a lot better at SG than PODZ. Sunday, slotted at the SF position, and fully-healthy, he showed he may be a fine perimeter shooter at his natural position (AS BARNES WAS while guarding 1-5). Methinks if we want to CONTEND the last 2 contract years of STEPH, DRAY, JIMMY, HORFORD, the best bet is to get KLAY BACK at SG. I see a 20-25 minute starting lineup with those 5, AND 20-POINT LEADS against most teams, with plenty of PT/ROTATION WITH THAT LINEUP/INJURY INSURANCE for MOODY and PODZ, as well as everyone else on the bench. Maximizing this two year SHIP last opportunity is worth JK's departure at trade deadline, for me. MAVS are rebuilding for the future and SPLASH BROTHERS should have been forever; we already wasted 2 years.
I don't think Klay is coming back, but I do think that Moses Moody can be a version of him that has a little more defense than Klay is capable of now but probably a little less scoring. I'm okay with that.
I like Moody, a lot. I would bet on KLAY been-there-done-that, more...Plenty of playing time for MOODY there...You would also be able to play some great SMALL BALL with AL, or, BUTLER/DRAY, resting and MOODY playing a natural SF; have 3 perimeter shooters-scorers on the floor most of the time...
Daniel this was a great analysis. The Horford addition is great but the growth of our younger playes was also visible. Moody shined and it was fantastic. JK showed some growth and maturity. Poat will benefit greatly from being on the floor and learning from Horford. I almost feel as if the startung line-up could become almost meaningless. Depends who we are playing and the matchup.
If last year and the year before were endless combos, this looks like combos that work.
And this was without Melton. Finally, it feels like magic is possible. Fingers crossed.
Particularly, I loved the play where JK had the ball in transition, drove until the defender under the basket committed to him, and gave Gary the bounce pass for the finish. It was a little less fluid than a CP3 or a LeBron, but the thought was there the whole time, instead of just tunnel vision of finishing himself.
Moses shot looks great in Year whatever it is now compared to his rookie season. It's generally still the same mechanics but I'm sure there were a few tweaks made here and there since because it looks a lot more fluid now. Welcome to the buffet Mr. Moody, it will be all you can eat from out there playing a full season with Steph and Jimmy
The thing that stuck out the most for me last night was Horford's defense. I don't know if it will look that good against regular competition, but if it does, that's a game-changer.
Yep, also noticed that he was even taking the ball up court for us on a number of occasions as others almost seemed to be looking to get it ahead to him. Already knew he is a great facilitator from the top of the key but had no idea he can be a competent ball handler in transition as well. Just has so many tools available and I'm so excited to see more of them all!
Age is less important on the court when your strengths doesn't require you to move like a player in their physical prime to be good. He'll hang it up when his mind/body can no longer endure the grind of an NBA season
I think so,sab. The key is fewer and easy minutes with the right combinations. I didnโt like the starting lineup because it us successful but the other metric is keeping Draymonds workload lighter. Moody can start instead of podz and maybe post if al is being saved some to play with kuminga.
daniel,What a great write up! Over optimistic undoubtedly but the challenges will be matching up against a lot! of great teams and getting up fir the other games too.
Eric : E1P about what a 2 big lineup can accomplish and how
Let's respect EA's time and remember that those things force him to work some very late nights.
It was a pretty low-key game. I'm guessing there were about 1/4 of the normal number of posts. Not like the world is dying to celebrate this glorious victory (with LAL's three top players out).
The optics of the term are homophobic but when you look further you see it's not originally intended to be a slur. Context, and intent matters of course.
But it's origins are from children getting swatted on the butt.
I have longed for another Mo' Buckets...
Nice to finally have a Ho' Buckets and Po' Buckets...
*waves in general direction of Moses*
I will pay to see video of Al getting called Ho Buckets. ๐ ๐

I think his sister's the salty one.

Great write up, but 6'11"? Did QP shrink this summer? Every stat I've seen listed him as a true 7 footer at 7'0"
Ayton is listed as 7-0 on BB-Ref (which now typically lists heights without shoes),and QP by the eyeball test in last nightโs game was clearly at least an inch taller than him standing side by side. So yeah, QP ainโt no 6-11!
Weโre all Moses Moodies

I think they should manage to โtotal minutesโ.
I think that makes sense, but also feel like I've seen comments from players about how a game day off is hugely more restful than two games at reduced run
And I think part of the reason was that just prepping for a game is a bit of a workout itself.

That plus Seth and Buddy Held, and even on a Steph night off, there will be plenty of shooting.
Agree, and with KLAY we are sure to have a lot of shot-making by everyone...

Of course, its going to look better without a shooting hand injury,
Of course, I was talking about before he even got that injury last year.
Looks faster. I think itโs just the classic โmore consistentโ that you see from vets.
Yep. The confidence knowing you're "one of the guys" now who won't get yanked at any second probably relieves a ton of pressure as well
The thing that stuck out the most for me last night was Horford's defense. I don't know if it will look that good against regular competition, but if it does, that's a game-changer.
Horford is 39 but he might as well be 38, or younger. He looks great out there.
Yep, also noticed that he was even taking the ball up court for us on a number of occasions as others almost seemed to be looking to get it ahead to him. Eric : E1P about what a 2 big lineup can accomplish and how
Is Eric also butthurt about something and skipping preseason E1Ps, or something?
IMHO, E1P for preseason is overkill.
Let's respect EA's time and remember that those things force him to work some very late nights.

Selective tariff, huh?
Disappointing to see that term here, of all places.
Wait... is there some deeper offensive meaning to something I wrote?
The optics of the term are homophobic but when you look further you see it's not originally intended to be a slur. Context, and intent matters of course.
But it's origins are from children getting swatted on the butt.
I will say in my experience growing up in the 80's it was 100% homophobic and not related from kids getting spanked or belted to whatever.
The minute by minute sumnary last night he posted was superb. Made me want to rewatch the entire game
Thanks for the positive feedback. I do those from time to time and I never really know how much people get out of them.
From time to time ... including almost every Valks game? I have been enjoying them, and hopefully it is not too much work.
DITTO
It's a lot of work, but it's worth it if people actually read them and get something out of it!
