I believe Richard is a player and will have a NBA career. Probably can play some right now.

Rowe is 28 and is skilled enough to help out as an emergency temp fill in.

Toohey a lot of hype but far away from being an NBA player. Not sure if his defensive ability is going to translate all that great to the NBA either.

I would love to combine Hawkins and Madsen into one player and you would have a nice stretch 4.

I would love to combine Armstrong and Cryer into one player and you would have a helluva point guard.

I can’t let go of Shackelford’s (spelling?) 3 point numbers in the G League and don’t understand the time given him.

Mobley big no.

I haven't seen any reports about whether Melton has fully recovered. I know the general timeline aligns well, but it depends on the individual as well as the rehab process.

Is there any stats to show how good a defender Horford was last year?

Was there a decline in the second half?

How well did he do against the beasts of the West? (Jokic, Wemby, Chet, Zubacs etc)

Curious how many of us would prefer just to remove JK’s qualifying offer off the table at this point, to give the team access to the full mid-level exception. You give what amounts to the TMLE to Horford, the rest about $8+ mil to Beal in order to outbid the Clippers where he’d play a similar role (according to Marc Stein today, the former still likely and the latter still a possibility). We sign Melton with the vet min with a promise to start. Without JK, my biggest concern would be the lack of a big wing to even have a chance to defend other teams’ big star wings… enter/sign Simmons for vet min with a promise to start.

Steph, Melton, Butler, Simmons, Horford… preserve Green on the bench, Beal as scoring six man, Pods, Buddy, Moody, Post bench. A lot of versatility there. I’m in. Hell bring in Seth if he’s still willing to be 12th man specialist. Better than the crap that the Kangz offered.

I have a feeling MJD is just waiting for one piece to fall and we’ll make multiple moves in quick succession soon… at least here’s hoping…

Hoops2518's avatar

I agree MDJ is patiently waiting and most likely has things in place.

I can only see Simmons as a sort of big GPII that doesn’t shoot 3’s. Maybe 10 to 15 minutes off the bench if we need his defense and passing out there with 3 or 4 good shooters. Curry, Podz, Moody, Simmons and Post for example.

Simmons is obviously different than GPII so not the greatest comparison. He could help and who knows maybe play more like his old self here. He could save some wear and tear on JB and Draymond if he he was playing well.

Of all the players promised a starting spot in your post.....I think Beal is the one who wants to start. Melton and Simmons probably don't need starting spots to sign, although maybe Melton would choose the Lakers if Beal came aboard.

But yes, I'd renounce JK if the rest of your post fell into place. I'd also take Boucher.

Range's avatar

Melton seems to be grounded and had greats vibes with Steph and Draymond last year. Let Beal start and chase the money (as Sab’s post suggests below). If we have access to the full MLE, I think we can outbid the other contenders for his services. Then I close games with Melton.

AttilaTheHun's avatar

Beal is a crappy defender. If we get him, which I hope we don't, he'd be best as a scorer off the bench.

Expand full comment
Range's avatar

My preference is for him to come off the bench… We need a scorer when Steph’s on the bench, load managing, and for the $8 mil bargain, I think it’s worth it.

Expand full comment
AttilaTheHun's avatar

It sounds like we can get Horford and maybe Melton but I agree that Beal's not coming here if for no other reason that he'll want to start. Simmons would have to be a vet min deal so that when his back goes out or something else goes wrong, as it will do with him, we haven't risked much.

I don't see how we afford Boucher in this scenario but I'm okay with it IF we also have Horford. Boucher is not a solution at center.

vignette17's avatar

I don't think there's much money left for FAs. I think there's a real chance any FA on the board signs for vet min. Including Boucher.

Expand full comment
AttilaTheHun's avatar

I think he can do better than that but what the hell do I know. I'm also not clear why he'd come here if the money will be the same anywhere (vet min) but maybe. I guess we'll find out. Honestly if we just get Melton and Horford we'll be lucky.

Horford and Melton is indeed a successful free agency. Hard not to want to be greedy though.

I came to Mexico for a few days and found the game on TV. Amazingly the (Spanish), Broadcasters really focus on the game and seem to be interested in it and making points about the players. No weird interviews. No discussions of other teams or other past games. I only saw a part of the game. I was happy to see Ccrer back, and I thought he looks good and Bolen. Maybe it’s coming back into the shape which will make him stable and strong with Richard and Matson. We’re starting to see some summer week potential. I like too he y also but it seems like he needs more experience, and so far I feel that way about Armstrong

Not bad win from the SL GSW. MEM has a bunch of experienced NBA players on it.

Richards. Good game. He was silky smooth on a couple of catch and shoots and he took over the middle of the 4th with a series of scores and good defensive plays.

Toohey. Toohey has prove he’s ready for the G-League (vs needing more seasoning in the ABL a la Jessup). He does seem to have adjusted some to the pace and physicality. But he can’t get any advantage on-ball. A couple of very nice passes. GG Jackson made him look bad on a couple of plays, but GGJ is an athletic 3rd yr player so he’s supposed to do that.

Rowe. Was fine. Coughed up the ball a couple of times unnecessarily.

Hawkins. Grasped tightly the mantle of Summer God of Chaos. The ur-play was him hustling hard to get back into the play on defense, tried to swipe the ball from behind, misses, slips and slides halfway across the court, almost taking out another Warrior, his man hits the open 3. Some good passes, a chaotic travel…

Manon. He’s more than caught up with the NBA speed. He’s imposing his nonstop energy on the game. He got pretty wild in Q4 and I don’t trust his ballhandling.

Shackleford. A good player trying to heat check his way out of the G-League.

Cryer. He settles the team, he looks not overmatched on defense.

Bolden. Starting to look a bit more himself post-injury. A spectacular block. Had some steady rebounds.

Shackelford hit 33.0% of his threes in the G League last year on high volume (more than 9 3PA/g). Don't see how he escapes those numbers. I did notice he was actively looking to pass more tonight to show another dimension to his game, although at less than 3 apg in his G-League career it's another flaw.

Sigh....

"It was not one moment. Like, even this year, probably in the playoffs. We're going against Steven Adams. This is what I do. They're not giving me the chance to really let me do what I do. It's like, alright, y'all don't trust me. I thought y'all would trust me."

"Nah, you get sick of that at some point," Looney told Thompson II. "When you prove yourself the first four, five years, all right, cool. But after 10 years of it, it's like, all right. You either trust me or you don't."

While Looney felt some type of way about Kerr's decisions, he knows it's not personal.

"I just know it's never personal with Steve," Looney said. "He's going to do whatever is best to try to win. It ain't just me. He's done this to everybody. I might've been the one it was happening to the most because I was here the longest. I know it's not personal. He just wants to win.

I mean the spacing was absolute garbage offensively through no fault of Looney. This current version of Draymond just throws everything off kilter offensively because unless you have a unicorn of a Center, u are in essence playing a two center 1 pf lineup if Looney were to have started alongside Draymond and Himothy.

jaxfor3's avatar

You say this version of Draymond as if there is another version that was offensively better. There are two seasons out of thirteen where he shot better than 34% from 3 which would be just outliers. This is the normal version of Draymond. Passer, poor shooter, dpoy defense.

True but it didn't help that Looney was a pretty bad finisher with a vertical leap in negative numbers.

I really have to believe that this is the longest a team has ever went without doing anything, it's been over two weeks with no signings/trades/re-signings. Technically they were part of that 7 team trade but for all intents and purposes that was a draft day move that was just finalized later on.

Part of this is just that the team was willing to accept some uncertainty now, rather than overpay JK in an extension last October. So, this is a good thing, really.

To me, the delay is fairly meaningless ... we have to sequence the deals so that we can match other offers for JK.

Some variation of these sequencing issues has been around for some time (usually it's signing your Bird right players last).

In short, I don't see what the fuss is about. We can all exercise some patience, I think. Thankfully, it's clear MDJ can.

I mean, respectfully, cmon. The Lakers traded for Luka and they are still making FA moves and trades. The trade deadline was its own period. Free Agency is now its own and while I fully expect the FO to make a few moves we are the only team that hasn’t done anything so far other than attaching our picks into a 7 team trade.

W's aren't just going to make moves for the sake of making moves. I imagine that resolving the JK situation, figuring out Horford & Melton & GPII, wild cards like LBJ and Beal, and such, there are still a lot of irons in the fire that they don't want to panic into. I'm cool with the patience.

That's very mature. I just think we get antsy. We see other teams potentially getting better, and we don't want to get left behind.

But we won't really know what we have for months. It just leaves us with little to talk about other than speculating.

Kyle Filipowski in three Summer League games:

35 PTS, 11 REB

I know nothing about him, but Toohey did wrap both his arms around him while doing a face guarding box out.

I thought is was crazy they didn’t call a foul on Toohey because it was so obvious and the ref was less than 10 feet away looking right at it.

I don’t know if there is other stuff but in that one instance I had no problem with him trying to get a guy off of him.

Now I need to look up his career stats. He is probably a classic summer league wonder.

Wow he is a Duke guy and averaged 15-16 points there. Did not expect that.
