If Kuminga grows even an inch or two, oh man. With the way he already attacks the rim, we might be seeing mini Giannis with an outside shot in 5 years. In terms of physique, he looked like the most mature guy on the floor. I expect him to be bench pressing Wiseman in practice.

He's also got way more passing ability than I think any draft preview gave him credit for... yes, he has tunnel vision at times and his passes might be off or late but at least you see him trying to make the play.

Moody was pretty much as advertised. Shot, defended, rebounded well. Used his length to bother opponents. Had trouble creating off the dribble... this will only improve with time as he gets more burst in his first step.

Kuminga is way more muscular than Iannis at his age. He must have grown up yet since he looked almost as tall as Mawugbe. He’s got a chance at “stouter Iannis with outside shot”

Expand full comment

Really surprised his game hasn't been compared to Giannis' more, given the Greek Freak's pre-eminence in the NBA imagination right now. The chance of being the best player in the NBA are always slim, but in terms of style, he's sooo Giannis-like, with his relentless physicality, limitless versatility, and mediocre jumper. Not to mention his African-ness — similar culture/ethnicity typically being a sine qua non for comparisons among young prospects.

Anyway, it's totally unfair to saddle him with a such a high bar at such a young age, but I'm gonna keep in the back of my head, along with Booker for Moody and AD for Wiseman...

Expand full comment

Giannis was a stick when he was Kuminga's age... and Kuminga will have to grow a few inches too.

Expand full comment

As long as we're being unfair, I actually hope Moody combines Book's offense with Klay-level defense.

Expand full comment

Yep agree, more muscular... stouter Giannis.

Expand full comment

Hard for me to ding Kuminga for tunnel vision too much, what with the unfamiliar team and all… but he does need to stop predetermining the plan more

Expand full comment

Oh, I'm not dinging him either. Just observations. That kind of stuff is coachable so I am not worried at all.

Expand full comment

Oh and something that I hadn't seen mentioned. Remember when Kuminga checked back in and the team got beat off a screen that resulted in a Miami and-1? Kuminga gathered the group together and, I couldn't hear what he said, but his hand gestures seemed to indicate he wanted the team to communicate more on defense.

Expand full comment

Yeah, saw that too… good to see

Expand full comment

Kuminga was so noticeable… like everywhere all the time. Both good and bad (mostly good). Even when he wasn’t on the floor, it was noticeable that he was absent.

Moody seemed invisible in a good way. He showed up to move the ball and finish plays.

I mean sure, it's Summer League, but Yurtseven is playing like a tan Brook Lopez.

Surely he should be under contract.

Expand full comment

bballref tells me he has a non-guaranteed contract with MIA for '21-22

Expand full comment

Word. He made a strong impression both nights.

I can't help wondering if he's one of those guys who's a man among boys in Summer League, but lacks the skills to succeed at the next level ... but I 100% agree that someone should give him a shot if he can sustain this level of play for the rest of Summer League.

Expand full comment

Jessup clearly has issues dealing with NBA speed and size. He played himself into this summer league opportunity and he'll just head back to the NBL with some valuable experience... and if he never makes it back to the NBA, at the very least, in five years, he can tell people he once played alongside All-Stars Kuminga and Moody :)

I do wonder what this might mean for Giddey. Jessup was able to create his own shots in the NBL and required teams to really organize their defense around him. Giddey didn't exactly stand out in terms of athleticism in the NBL.

Expand full comment

Eh, Giddey is on a different level to Jessup as a prospect. Giddey outright beat Jessup for NBL rookie of the year, and Giddey did that as an 18yo while Jessup came in with 4 years of college ball under his belt.

Expand full comment

Sure, but my point wasn't Jessup > Giddey. There's a reason Jessup was the 51st pick vs. Giddey being a lottery pick.

My point is that both players have questions regarding their athleticism coming in while both seemed to do fine in that regard in the NBL. Maybe it's less of an issue for Giddey since he's an inch or two taller? I don't know. If all I saw were Jessup and Giddey NBL highlights, I'm not sure I could pick one as definitely more athletic.

And FWIW, it's not like he ran away with a unanimous Rookie of the Year award. He got about half the votes.

Giddey 64

Vasiljevic 35

Jessup 27

Expand full comment

I guess if we're talking just physicals. I think it's clear that Giddey already has a strength advantage over Jessup, despite being 5 years younger. Giddey with 8.3 reb per36 over Jessup's 4.2 reb in the NBL, and It's not like Giddey has some crazy measurements either, he just seems more willing to bang inside with the bigs.

Teams with >$10M cap space: OKC ($28M), NOP ($13.5M), CHA ($13.5 pre-Ish Smith)

Teams with NTPMLE ($9.5M): CHI, CLE, HOU, MIN, SAC, TOR

Teams with full TPMLE ($5.9M) or equivalent: GSW, ATL, BOS, LAC, MIL, PHI, POR, WAS

Everyone else has less. My guess is there's only 3 guys left who will get more than $6M in Schroder, Oubre, and Reggie. Seems like we struck out with our MLE again, barring a miracle. However, Oubre struck out too. I don't really want him back, but it seems to be his only real option. Could Lacob really stomach an Oubre trade?

Actually, there is one more player who gets a bit more money. What about Josh Hart? There's no way NO lets him go for the TPMLE is there?

when does free agency end?

Expand full comment

Likely already ended for the Dubz...unfortunately

Expand full comment

Probably the end of the regular season?

Otherwise, the deadline for Free Agents to be eligible for the playoffs is generally like a week or two after the trade deadline. I don't think the NBA has given those dates yet.

Had no answer for the big man in the middle for Miami. I guess they need to drive him and make him foul more.

Who's even worth offering the TPMLE anymore?

Reggie Jackson sure. Don't see a need for Paul Millsap with Bjelica here now. Schroder I guess?

After that.....eh....they all look like vet min guys.

Well who knows, maybe Kawhi wants to play for the Warriors on a TPMLE lol

Yeah they were supposedly interested in Schroeder for the TPMLE if he became available, according to Slater. Reggie Jackson is still the dream.

If neither of those guys are available, holding onto it would make more sense.

Golden State Warriors receive: Buddy Hield

Sacramento Kings receive: Kelly Oubre Jr. (sign-and-trade) and 2026 first-round pick (top-10 protected)

The top tier in the Western Conference looks as treacherous as ever, and the Warriors have yet to uncover the major move that gains them re-entry. Adding fire-baller Buddy Hield to an offense already featuring all-time snipers Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson might do the trick.

Hield certainly seems to be available. The Los Angeles Lakers nearly acquired him before changing gears to get Russell Westbrook, per ESPN's Ramona Shelburne. Even after the Westbrook blockbuster, the Lakers "have not ended their search for ways to land Buddy Hield," per B/R's Jake Fischer.

Consider this opportunity's knock for the Warriors. Their top sign-and-trade candidate, Kelly Oubre Jr., is a much cleaner fit with Kings guards De'Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton than the Lakers', Dennis Schroder. Add a future protected pick to the equation, and Golden State might have the formula for turning the Splash Brothers into the Splash Triplets.

Even if this exposes the Warriors' defense a bit—to what degree might depend on how much ability Thompson retained through consecutive seasons lost to leg injuries—it would electrify their offense. And, should the right superstar trade target come available (cough, Bradley Beal), they'd still have the trade chips to go in hot pursuit.

The Kings could turn a player they're seemingly content losing into a plug-and-play 25-year-old wing and a future pick from a franchise built around three 30-somethings. That has win-today, win-tomorrow potential, or maybe a double-win for right now if they cash in the pick in a separate swap.

Expand full comment

Kings would have to pay Oubre $20mil for the salaries to work out

Expand full comment

Is this quoting someone? Like is this a real rumor? Also, if we're getting Hield and not throwing other salary in there (say Hield/Barnes for Wiggins/Oubre), I think we're looking at ....maybe $500 M payroll?

Hell, if the Kings stay under the tax, they may be basically getting Oubre's salary back from the league after the league taxes the Dubs and the money is split by non-tax teams.

Expand full comment

In our dreams, yeah. I'd love it but I don't see Sacramento wanting to help a division rival even if it benefits them too

Expand full comment

They were apparently in talks w LAL

it just depends on what suitors are avail for Hield and what they're offering...because the situation is toxic w him remaining on the team

But ur probably right...ultimately, they'll wait for a good deal to pop up from a non division rival

Being an A-10 guy now that Davidson's been in for the conference for 8 years, I'm pleasantly surprised to see Dowtin from from Rhode Island make an impact the last couple of games.

He's a little on the older side but hopefully he sticks with a team by the time they get to camp.

Also happy that Bones Hyland from VCU got selected in the first round, interested to see how he does this year with the Nuggets.

Like what im seeing from Dowtin. Nico might have to stay in Italy 😂

Expand full comment

Nah I still prefer Nico. Dowtin's 24 and if were gonna invest in youth make sure they're actually young.

Expand full comment

24 is young last i looked. If hes better hes better.

We have plenty of other youth on the team already

Expand full comment

It's not that we "want youth", it's that youth brings with it great upside.

Expand full comment

Ok, yeah...Jessup, uh, no.

Kuminga does not look 18, kinda like the way Lebron didn't look 18. His athleticism is very high, and he works on D. He's going to be good.

Moody looked pretty good/ok. I wanted Kispert. I think his ability to move and shoot like Thompson/ Reddick/ D. Robinson would be huge. Its a different level of shooting than Moody. Even if their percentages would be somewhat similar, not really comparable. Wizards are in Vegas summer league, so maybe we see them match up.

Dowtin looked pretty good. Wanna see more.

Schakel looks useful. Like what I was expecting out of Jessup.

Expand full comment

Kispert will be a net negative defender throughout his career...no thx.

And Moody is clearly more than just some 3&D only wing. He cab draw fouls so consistently...just needs to work on driving to the cup a lot

Expand full comment

Kispert might be net negative on defense, but he does give effort there. And as much as I hate the phrase, he truly is deceptively athletic. It's the age and foul drawing that separates Moody.

Expand full comment

For what it's worth, Schakel had better career college shooting percentages than Kispert. 43% from three and 87% from the line in college for Schakel compared to 41% and 82% for Kispert on similar volume. Also has an advanced ability to move and shoot.

Expand full comment

And once again, Kispert plays no defense whatsoever. Always wanted Moody over him for that reason

Thats what separates career bench players and starters

Expand full comment

Moody's also three years younger. How badly do you think Moody destroy college competition if you sent him back to U of Arkansas three years from now?

Moody's freshman year shooting numbers compare favorably to Kispert's freshman year shooting numbers, for whatever that is worth.

Here's what I thought from the game

1. Jessup probably won't have a career in the nba. He's 23 and it just looked like everything was too fast and he looked outmatched athletically. I also didn't know he's 23. Thought he was younger.

2. Kuminga looked good to me. Really good on defense and was active. On offense, he either went black hole or couldn't make good passes but at least he was finishing pretty well inside.

3. Moody was a little harder to get a read on. He was hustling a lot and made his open shots but looked like he struggled evey time he had to create something. I think even though kuminga is the better player, moody will probably fit better with the team right now due to his ability to make the open shots. If we combined the shooting ability of moody with the slashing ability of kuminga, we would have a really good sf/pf even as a rookie...like hb was ;)

Expand full comment

That's pretty much the college book on Moody. The lack of attack off the dribble is part of why he underperformed in the NCAA tournament (that and a couple of just bad shooting nights). He'll be fine in the GS offense for a while with Steph and Klay to play and spot off of. I think a lot of it is personality - right now he's mentally predisposed to be the second option (possibly because of the talent he played with at Montverde). In a lot of ways, he's just not selfish enough to be a lead scorer. I'm hopeful Draymond can get in his ear and motivate him to more aggression. It's in there - I think Moody's just a little too nice at the moment (and 19 years old), particularly for summer league "I'm playing for a job here" solo-ball. He showed some flashes his last few regular season games last year. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7d9vpN1tCac
