Sorry, I know I shouldn't be venomous, but I can't resist.

Last summer I was excited for Poole Party, for the Lion Kuminga, for MM, for PBJ. Even for JW. I was excited for Bob Myers. I was excited for DDV, although GP2 runaway stung a little.

For what should I be excited this year? For Chris Paul? For Cory Joseph? For Dario Saric? For TDJ? For Quinones? (by the way, little latin sound help, the first n in his surname has a Spanish tilde, and it sounds more or less like the double n in 'tennis'). Should I be excited for a team that mixes two opposing gameplays (fast Kerr ball and controlled half court PNR) without having the right players for either one? (avg. age too high for fast break, no proper centres for p'n'r)

Honestly, I think about JP2 in DC (my prediction? If they give him the same green light they gave to Beal, contender for scoring title and AS). I think about Wiseman, 16 pts. 12 reb, 1 blk in 25 min. with Pistons. I think about Mannion, 16 pts 5 reb 4 ast 2 stl in 29 min. with Bucks.

That's what would excite me, buddies. I am very bitter instead.

Have a nice season.

Sorry to hear you are disappointed by the offseason. As the others mentioned, I am actually very excited to see: Klay starting the season in shape, JK and MM both making a leap and solidifying a rotation spot, Wiggs and GPII hopefully healthy and available for most of the season, and Steph still in his prime still doing Steph things.

But, whatever happens, I'm looking forward to agreeing with, arguing with, and generally supporting and being supported by the great community here on DNHQ.

I think you are going to be pleasantly surprised Stefano.

Moody is going to be really good and there is a real chance Paul turns Kuminga into a pretty good player.

Kuminga has flaws in his game, but I'm not sure there is a better guard in the league than Paul to get him the ball where he can do something with it.

If either Kuminga's shooting or his dribbling improve, it's going to be fun.

And, I think Santos (on a 2-way) is going to be getting a bunch of minutes this year. He's kind of the antidote for sanity (in a good way).

Can anyone explain the Qualifying Offer to Mannion so he's a RFA and what maintaining rights is actually worth? My understanding is he's signed a two year contract in Spain.

Let's say he keeps building hype from SL through his next season in Spain and another team gets interested. Can the Warriors actually match any offer or would they priced out if another team offers more than the minimum (e.g. how the two-bit Cavs stole Ty Jerome)? Are RFA rights tradeable like draft rights?

You should be excited for the opportunity to watch the best player in the NBA play another year. There aren’t a whole lot of years left, enjoy them while they are there…

Oh man Stefano and I say this with no knock on how you feel, but while I have some concerns, the way you laid out the roster construction makes me really excited for the upcoming season

“i’ll sleep when I’m dead” roster. In other words, lets maximize this roster while we have Curry playing at a high level for the next 3 years. We’ll worry about them kids when he retires

You know moody and kuminga Will have more minutes this year ?

We have two news rookies too..

And how can You be bitter while watchin curry play ? He could be in dame position..thank our organization at age 36 he can still compete for a ring..

I really like your attitude, all the three of you. I wish I was that positive. I hope one whole summer is enough to click something that now is off inside me.

I love you guys.

Just remember that you root for a team that has won 4 league titles in the last decade. Maybe that will remind you to have a little trust in them.

The Lakers are “actively” seeking another center to shore up their frontcourt. Centers Christian Wood and Bismack Biyombo are in consideration for LA’s 14th roster spot, sources told @TheAthleticNBA.

I hope we take Biyombo before they do.

so they're not targeting dwight? given how much popularity he retains and that they're targeting a center, I wonder why the LA would pass on him given his time with the Lakers is perceived as his best post-stardom stop. Should that reason give the Dubs pause?

So glad those fuckers didn’t snatch up Dario.

Probably entirely unlikely but a bench squad of Paul/Moody/Kuminga/Wood/Saric would be fun to watch.

I know they were never gonna do it but I'm worried that passing on Cam Whitmore is gonna be a mistake. I know Podz is older, more likely to help this year etc, but I just don't see the athleticism there to be anything more than a back of the rotation player.

And it's only Summer League and a small sample, but Brandon Miller went 4-18, 0-7 from 3 - still can't believe he went over Scoot.

Expand full comment

Think of it this way, if an NBA weight room can improve Podz's explosiveness so that he can compete/generate average seperation at the NBA level than Podz has everything else needed to be an effective role player (great passer/great shooter/projects to be a solid defender given his defensive positioning/steals). All he needs is to be able to hang athletically and he would be a great pickup!!

I was in favor of them taking Whitmore once he fell. HOWEVER what is Whitmore doing on this team except diminishing his own trade value? I have nearly zero faith in Kerrs ability to teach and develop so Im at peace with them taking a higher floor type rookie to provide some decent rotation minutes. Once the GOAT is gone and this team sucks enough to be a high lottery team then im more than ok with them investing on the Whitmores of this world.

*EDIT thats not to denigrate Podz. Kid has ridiculous vision and pacing especially for a rookie. This is more of expecting the coaching and vets to put up with another ‘really high upside but will need more development’ type of rookie on the roster

In TJD news:

**

“It was just a little nip in my hamstring, it was nothing too crazy,” Jackson-Davis told The Chronicle. “The team doctors and trainers have done a really good job, but we’re just trying to take it slowly. It’s summer league. Obviously we’re trying to win games, but at the same time we don’t want anything lingering. That’s the biggest emphasis.

“My right hamstring is honestly probably better than my left right now, just the impact of how much work they’ve done on it. … Hopefully I’ll be on the court soon.”

“I’m ready to go out there. I’m ready to start playing,” Jackson-Davis told The Chronicle. “But I’m also going to listen to what they say, and hopefully I’ll be cleared for Wednesday or Thursday.”

Watching CP3 giving a press conference about the trade to the Warriors. Not lots to report, just reading the tea leaves and over-interpreting micro body language.

CP3 still seems stunned by the whole trade to the Warriors specifically. He kind of bristled at the idea of coming off the bench though he didn't rule anything out. It must be the kind of situation where you don't know how it will work until they're all on the court together and it's about basketball again...

Yea. He's just a bit touchy on the bench talk.

I feel like it's one of those deals where he's cool with doing whatever the coaching staff asks of him in order to win but he's not going to prematurely demote himself from being a starter on his own

Yea I feel like it should be an easy sell: “Look, we need you in the playoffs, so you can’t get injured, and we need to load manage you. Don’t be a regular season hero and playoff flameout.”

To be fair, I think CP3 could start in a CP3 - Steph - Klay - Wiggs - Dray small starting lineup. But you'd think CP3 and Center Dray should be on a tight minutes restriction, starters or not

Expand full comment

IMHO, just give CP3 and Center Dray the start to avoid the drama but take CP3 out early on and bring him back to run the bench. He's nominally the starter but he mostly runs with the bench.

What Podz has shown so far:

- A very good ability to survey the floor and make the necessary passes

- High motor on the glass

What he needs to improve moving forward:

-Needs to be more creative with the ball to get his shot off consistently

-Learn to play more in the system on the defensive end

Luckily, it's only the first few games of his career. He might look a lot better playing with the big boys once he learns our system.

He seems to be a 'Hail Mary' type player. He'll never survive in Kerr's rotation if he doesn't drop the frenetic drives and passing. He's got more faults than anyone the Warriors have had in recent memory. OTOH, nothing wrong with his motor and nose for the ball. Perhaps he's not getting any coaching help in SL. He plays as if he's in a pickup game. Quinones is nothing like this and already has his game under control.

Expand full comment

I agree Podz seems to be a Hail Mary type of player, and there are reasons for concern, but "He's got more faults than anyone the Warriors have had in recent memory"... c'mon, that's a big exaggeration. Can you say "Jacob Evans"? I knew you could! JW had a lot of faults, although he's a physical monster. We can think of others. Heck JP looked pretty rough at first.

Expand full comment

Oh, there are plenty of picks that didn't work out, but this is the #19 pick. Evans was #28 and never looked promising. A bad Myers mistake. Poole was also #28 but he wasn't a bust. I must admit that I was unaware of how raw Podz is. I wonder if he can slow down. He's like a bull in a china shop. Not happy at this point, but we'll see if the coaching staff can give him good advice. SC awaits him, I think. I thought for sure, Cam Whitmore would have been our choice since he dropped so far.

Expand full comment

Can you clarify where you're seeing the rawness in Podz?

Seems to me that he's an excellent passer/decision maker whose also an excellent shooter (even if he's been inefficient so far in SL, his college career/high school show he's good). Defensively, he's consistently been in the right place and hasn't been blown by while also demonstrating a nose for the ball with steals. Seems to have a pretty tight handle as well. That seems fairly polished to me.

He just seems to lack the athleticism to get seperation, which is a MAJOR flaw which might ruin his NBA chances but thats not a LOT of faults imho. Its just one REALLY BIG fault.

Expand full comment

The number of TO's, wild passes, poor shooting, not athletic. Difficulty finishing at rim. DDV clone in rebounding and steals. How is he going to get minutes with Kerr?

Expand full comment

I think its patently ridiculous for you to claim he has poor shooting over a couple game sample size when you have the entirety of his high school/college career telling you to the contrary. The same line of argument applies when it comes to turnovers, he was not turnover prone in college and using a couple games of essentially pick up ball instead of organized ball as evidence is also ridiculous.

Difficulty finishing at the rim/not athletic are basically the same thing AND i already mentioned it as a criticism. But thats one legitimate criticism of Podz . . . which is what I said. He has one major fault but it very well might ruin his NBA chances.

feels like worth bearing in mind that the Lakers and Pelicans were led by second year NBA players... they're supposed to dominate. If you take their rookies (#17 Jalen Hood-Schifino, #40 Maxwell Lewis, and #14 Hawkins) and the #19 Podz, LQ, and Santos, I think that comes out as a more fair comparison. Plus, no TJD

Expand full comment

Not really true about Lakers. Castleton and Schifino are dominating.

Expand full comment

On Friday's game, I think Castleton played very well. Maybe 1st or 2nd best player that game. But the Dubs didn't have their own college senior big, so maybe the Lakers would have faced stiffer resistance if TJD was around. In any case, Castleton has played well and is looking like a steal.

Imho, Schifino played fine but not exceptionally. FG 3/11 and 3 assist is ok (he played better tonight). Maybe I've got homer-eyes, but I see him being on the same level, at least at this stage. I felt Max Christie set the tone for them early on, which made it a lot easier for everyone else to fall in line. And Christie should be able to do so since he played a year already
