Abaddon - Answer to your sidebar question:

https://www.nba.com/stats/search/player-game/?CF=FG3M*gt*4&GB=Y&Season=2020-21&dir=1&sort=TOTAL_GAMES

Curiously though, it says Steph has 36 such games but when I count such games manually, it gives me 33. So I checked for couple of other players, it matched for them. Go figure!!

Expand full comment

LOL, the "all" query says Steph has 434 games with 4+ 3PM, as compared with 344 according to the tweet (which is presumably correct). That's a pretty big gap.....

Expand full comment

Ah ha: https://www.nba.com/stats/search/player-game/?CF=FG3M*gt*4&GB=Y&dir=1&sort=TOTAL_GAMES&SeasonType=Regular%20Season

Had to add the regular season qualifier and that fixed it.

Expand full comment

Awesome. I tried that earlier but same results. Most likely Regular Season didn't take affect.

Expand full comment

Thanks! That is weird.... you're right that the count is wrong.

I'm looking for career numbers, not season numbers, but I think I should be able to figure that out....

More accolades: https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/warriors/steph-currys-record-breaking-night-summed-three-wild-stats including this tidbit:

"Curry's next historic milestone will include Mullin, as the Warriors star is just 94 points away from passing Mullin on the NBA's all-time scoring list."

Expand full comment

(By the way, I just noticed Mullin's NBA page has him in a Pacers uniform. Wut)

Expand full comment

Next in order: Mullin, Lou Hudson, Calvin Murphy, World (B) Free. A bit of a jump and then: Dave Bing (18327), Glen Rice, Julius Erving, TMac, and Rick Barry (70th) at 18395. If he averages 30+ppg the rest of the way, that's about where he should end up.

Sidebar: does anyone have a good site for doing searches like in the tweet (e.g. "give me a list of players with their number of games making four or more three pointers in a game)? I used to use basketball reference, but when they rebranded as stathead they paywalled that. I haven't been able to figure out how to do it on nba.com...

If the Warriors finish at 42-30 would Curry have a chance at the MVP? Maybe the organization should change gears from develop and tank to: lets get Curry the MVP by winning out.

Expand full comment

I think it is Jokic's to lose at this point, but it would certainly make things interesting if the Warriors, say, won out. Not that it is gonna happen :).

Expand full comment

The other part of the narrative that would benefit from winning games is that fans in Chase center make all the difference.

Expand full comment

Now that Steph has the Warriors career scoring record, time to move the Warriors up the leaderboard (currently 20th). We shouldn't have to wait very long; next up is Clyde Drexler and the Portland Trailblazers at 18,040 (-222 pts).

Expand full comment

Nice. Was actually thinking about Clyde the Glide last night as this analogy occurred to me:

Steph : Dame :: MJ : Drexler

Looney with 11 boards and 31 minutes, he plays less than 20 regulary. if he can play those minutes with that production, that will be an upgrade for this team.

Expand full comment

That's way too much for him. Maybe they've already contacted someone who is currently quarantining in order to join them ASAP. Probably another 10 day or something.

Or maybe Zaza's been training hard for this moment lol.

Wonder if drummond or aldridge would have came here if wiseman was injured then

Wonder if Kaleb Wesson would have signed a two-way after they converted JTA if it had happened a few weeks ago. But now he's injured either way so that's not going to happen.

No choice but to play him. The only big we got. Forget Smiley.

What an indictment on Smiley.....Warriors are decimated on the front and still can't see the floor.

I remember one sequence where Loon ran back on defense like I have never seen him move before. Looks like the expected reliance has given him extra juice. And he took two 3s w/o hesitation. Clanged both but hopefully 3rd one will fall (33% will be awesome).

Looney had huge rebounds all game. Those 3s were a danger to onlookers.

Expand full comment

And yet still better than that Bazemore miss from the FT line. Yikes.

Expand full comment

He’s not gonna play those minutes — Kerr said as much. Maybe 20-25, tho.

They’ll likely add another big body to help him in the next few days. Maybe Noah Vonleh?

Expand full comment

Always Liked him. Strong rebounder good defender, and cand shoot from outsider a little.

Expand full comment

Murray's injury looked awful - can't believe it's not some sort of ligament damage.

But what a nice win! Great play all around. Looney's value in getting second chance shots was really obvious.

Expand full comment

Best player in the world and we cant get him help in the deadline. Even chicago got a great backup C. Now the bouyout market is closed too. Big F for the FO this year.

Expand full comment

Technically wrong as Steph has 17, 16, 15, etc games with 10+ 3PM :). He should be filling in ALL the blanks....

Expand full comment

Are the Warriors a better team without Oubre and Wiseman? These last two wins were impressive. I know Steph wants that scoring title this year and he is exploding and igniting his teammates.

Expand full comment

Wiggins played 41 minutes yesterday. Can't be running him into the ground like that. Oubres needed. Esp since the stats say he should do better now with no wiseman

Expand full comment

No one plays 41 minutes each game so no worries about Wiseman. Oubre is probably best off the bench and with the bench, not on this starting team. They looked like a different club the last two games without him. Oubre is depth but will they Warriors bring him back? I doubt it, but they could. If I were Oubre, I would walk.

Expand full comment

If Oubre and Wiseman out means Draymond becomes an efficient 18ppg stretch 5 (he was 7-8 FG, 2-3 3pt), then yes!

Serious answer now, but I'd say the Warriors offense looks best when they don't group 3 non-spacers (and 2 non-passers) in Oubre, Draymond, and Wiseman together. Can prolly make it work with 2 of them, Dray-Oubre or Dray-Wiseman, but definitely all 3 is too much lack of spacing for even Curry's gravity to overcome.

Main thing with Wiseman out, imo, is that Kerr finally stumbled on a well balanced bench of Poole-DLee-Bazemore-Wiggins-Wiseman and it lasted all of like 9 minutes of total playtime... 😓

Expand full comment

This is probably the most reasonable take so far. I will say that Oubre has improved his passing from the beginning of the year, although he's still not as good as Wiggins.

Expand full comment

The 17 points Dray had aren't always there, so Oubre's scoring needs to be accounted for.

Expand full comment

Oubre does negatively impact rhythm of Kerr ball much more than Wiggs (or for that matter Baze) or may be it is that having Oubre in addition to Wiggs is just too much to take for Kerr ball. Has Wiggs missed any game? I wonder how Kerr ball does if Wiggs is replaced by Baze or Lee.

Expand full comment

Wiggins is a solid contributor on both ends. He actually executes and is turning it on more, lately. With the financial situation being what it is, I don't see Oubre on the team next season. I like him a lot, though.

Expand full comment

Hard to say “better without,” cos depth and versatility are always good. But it’s not probably not coincidence that this team looks the most like its optimal Kerrball self when its most erratic, worst-passing, lowest hoops IQ players (Oubre, Wiseman, and Paschall) are replaced in the core rotation by heady vets like Loon, Lee, and JTA.

Expand full comment

Of course, it never hurts to have depth. I was imaging Bazemore and Looney who both did a lot to win this game. The bench still sucks, though. Kerr hardly used them in the 1st half.

Expand full comment

No

Expand full comment

Yes, the basketball gods have forced the team to play without the 3 anchors (at various times of the season) they have loved to play this year: Wise, Oubre, and Paschall, and the Warriors traded Wannamaker. This is definitely the best version of the roster in terms of consistently winning games. Those who actually want to compete this year should hope for the current roster to stay very healthy, and the training staff should make sure those other 3 are very very healthy before they come back.

Dubs last game of the season is against the Grizz... that could easily be a play-in to the play-in that determines who's 8 seed and who's 9 seed.

Dubs also have 3 games against the Pelicans. They need to win those or they don't deserve to get in the play in game over the Pelicans. I'm really excited for Draymond vs. Zion, tbh.

Luka Doncic is already whining about the play-in tourney. You don’t think he secretly knows his team is dead if they catch the Warriors in the play-In? https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/31246049/dallas-mavericks-luka-doncic-critical-nba-play-tournament-concept

I didn't like it either until I realized we may need it lol

Expand full comment

I still don't like it. Having 1/2 of the teams in the playoffs is more than enough.

Expand full comment

It does the opposite. It actually makes getting into the top 6 more relevant and still limits the field to 8 per side. Love it!

Expand full comment

It's an interesting wrinkle thrown into the mix. I kinda like it too. And probably a good thing it's there for the Dubs this season.

Expand full comment

Oh man, that's a hilarious quote: "You play 72 games to get into the playoffs, then maybe you lose two in a row and you're out of the playoffs. So I don't see the point of that"

Umm... sir, you play 72 games to get to the playoffs as the 7 seed, and lose two in a row to the Suns/Jazz and you're basically out of the playoffs anyways...

Expand full comment

He should:

1. Play better and get a higher seed

2. Get ready to compete

3. Go home

Expand full comment

And to be fair, they've got games coming up against the Lakers, and they are not far behind the Blazers anyways... totally reasonable for them to end up in five or six seed anyways.

Expand full comment

But they got beaten by the Knicks last night, sooo.... it could go the other way for them just as easily. [Not that the Knicks aren't a good team this year.]

Expand full comment

Oh yeah, but if it goes the other way with their remaining strength of schedule, they don't really deserve better than the play in.

Maybe I'm biased from Warriors' position this year, but I like the play in as a tank preventer. Without the play in, the Pelicans wouldn't really have anything to play for and could justify selling assets.

He should have come to training camp in shape and ready to play and they might be the 4th or 5th seed by now.

This game is kinda what I was talking about with "puncher's chance in the playoffs when you have the best player in the league." We've been keeping Steph leashed, limiting smallball, and playing the yoots a ton in the regular season — those things won't happen in the playoffs (if we make them, lol).

Yeah, some bigger, better team will probably grind us down eventually, but I doubt we go quietly. Warriors are 18-2 in their last 20 playoff series, and the two series losses were both total BS. The next time Steph+Dray go quietly in the playoffs will be the first time. I wouldn't relish playing us.

If only we had been able to add Otto Porter on a buyout for some depth...

Yeah, fucking sucks. Feel so bad for him and the Nuggs, who were starting to look like a fringe title contender with the addition of Gordon. Here's what a doctor on another board wrote about the injury:

"No bueno. Would be pretty surprised if that's not an ACL tear/season ender. Here is my impression from his upcoming MRI I will definitely not see.

1. Acute full thickness anterior crucial ligament tear.

2. Acute slightly impacted trabecular injuries at the posterior margin of the lateral tibial plateau and periphery of the lateral femoral condyle compatible with a recent anterior tibial translation event

3. Peripheral vertical tear of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus near the meniscocapsular junction

4. Moderate grade proximal medial collateral ligament sprain

5. Large knee joint effusion."
