Beautifully, exuberantly written, Patrick. Well done.

And to Eric, Duby, Daniel, and all of you witty, knowledgeable, passionate, Warrior-dedicated commenters: Thank you, and happy 2024. Here's hoping this new chapter contains untold treasures!

Jonathan Kuminga is questionable tomorrow night against the Raptors. Toe strain. Draymond Green is now listed as out for “return to play reconditioning” instead of a league suspension.

Too bad he couldn’t train while suspended

Expand full comment

He could. As reported initially, the conditions of his suspension allowed him to work out with the team, too — but he didn't do it, for whatever reason. We don't know whether he trained elsewhere or not. But NBA playing shape is another level.

I guess playing 36 minutes on a sore toe wasn’t helpful…

May explain why he was launching 3pters the 1st half, with Steph and Klay on the floor....

With their coming roster crunch, I wonder what it would take to shake free Jaylin Williams (Ark) as a semi-stretch 5 from OKC in the offseason? He's not starting anymore for them with Chet now owning that spot, and he's due a contract extension, I think.

Best cumulative plus-minus in the NBA this season: Jokic +395

Worst: Poole -342

Expand full comment

Poole managed to fool the Warriors into a 100$ contract so I guess good for him. Because that will NOT be the value of his next contract if things hold this way, I will go out on a limb and declare

Expand full comment

I keep hoping JP will bounce back. He seems to have lost his way. But he's young and talented. There's still time for him to right the ship if he decides he wants to make his teammates better and play winning basketball on both ends.

For now, he's proving all of his critics right. What a lose-lose conclusion for this guy. At least he got a bag.

Expand full comment

He is in the humbling phase of his career… we’ll see how he comes out of it. Will it crush him and banish him from the league, will he accept some limitation and refocus on a smaller role, or will he emerge having found basketball nirvana and rise like the Phoenix?

Expand full comment

The Warriors signed him for the 100$ contract and a second team traded for him with it.

This seems to be the nature of the NBA, big contracts earned on maybe limited history but with potential... sometimes it looks foolish...

Expand full comment

They unloaded CP and got picks the contract wasn’t a good one as evidenced by which team gave up assets in the trade

Expand full comment
Jan 7·edited Jan 7

The Ws gave up PBJ and RR in all of that, and got an asset they thought would be a big help (either on the court or as an expiring contract) moving forward...so the workings of the deal (s) somehow made sense for both teams. NBA trades are complicated with salary ramifications, but each team does have a choice to make a deal (and therefore take on a contract) or not.

Expand full comment

Indeed. Part of the calculation on the Dubs end was that CP3's contract is not guaranteed for next season, so they could shed salary to get under the second tax apron. It's not just about the players.

Expand full comment

He earned that contract… then he fell off a cliff for some reason… maybe he got lucky with a few well timed hot shooting streaks that told a story of him being better than he is…

Expand full comment

He was really good in the playoffs the year we won the championship - won us a few games when Steph was out and also had some good games against the Celtics. Really sad how he has fallen off a cliff. Maybe in his case it is a coach/game planning issue

Expand full comment

Sure, we saw him play well. On offense. No one ever said he could play a lick of defense, nor did anyone appreciate his shot selection. It's interesting to see a guy go from hero to zero, though.

Expand full comment

He played some, sometimes…

Expand full comment

Yeah he played some defense two or three times a season. Not enough so you'd notice. It's hard to think of a worse defensive player in recent Dubs history.

Expand full comment

In case he would be waived by the Wizards (and he's doing his worst to get that, it seems), would it be possible to get back Poole for a minimum contract? After all, his sub and his nemesis are out. And I'm sure he'd come back on foot.

Expand full comment

Wiseman is never going to be like Embiid. Why fool yourself into making this comparison?

Can you make a statement that in a team more caring and attentive with rookies development than us, Wiseman wouldn't have reached his potential anyway?

Ma ti piace così tanto Poole? A me mica tanto, e vedo dozzine e dozzine di esterni meglio di lui in NBA

Expand full comment

Poole was flawed from the very first season he played with us. Remember how he couldn't shoot? Couldn't make a 3 point shot. I don't recall ever seeing a worse shooter in their rookie year.

Expand full comment

Expand full comment

Jrue Holiday è anni luce più forte di Poole, e non credo vada neanche all' All Star Game....

His nemesis is coming back soon (fortunately or unfortunately, depending on one’s point of view).

He’s also on the books for another 3/$97M after this season, so there’s realistically zero chance the Wiz buy him out to let him play for the minimum on another team. They’ll have to find a taker for that contract, and likely take on a similarly bad contract in return.

Now we see what a smart move it was by Mike D to get off that contract, sad as it was to see JP go after he had helped us win the ‘chip in ‘22. Would anyone wanna see even 10 of Podz’ and JK’s minutes, or 25% of their usage, in the capable hands of Jordan Poole?

Expand full comment

Poole-Podz bench backcourt? Every day of the year.

That's approaching Monta/Steph defensive issues. Podz is a willing defender, but I'm not convinced he's a good one.

As DUBY thought, DRAY's return has been accelerated. HE's BACK! Warriors Ball about to make a comeback! Happy New Year!

Consider that at the first whack, he will get back to Gehenna at once.

Draymond's return should provide ample cover for Kerr. I've never seen him criticized in media and by fans as much as recently. Storylines like who should we trade, who fills in for CP, Wiggins vs. Kuminga, Moody, etc. are nowhere near as exciting for the press as Draymond. Enjoy the last week off, we're about to see nonstop Draymond coverage. What would be absolutely lovely but hard to imagine would be if neither he nor the team said one word about it, and he just played basketball as it is meant to be played. I'll cross one finger if you cross the other.
