I think it's finally hitting me that Jimmy freaking Buckets is on our team. That dude is really good at basketball and he's the 2nd option for us.

Expand full comment
dinohealth's avatar

Well, that is asking a lot from him as a scorer, though JIMMY and DRAY will play a VITAL role as set-up players and would benefit with A SECOND TARGET KICK OUT PERIMETER DEADLY OPTION AT SG, THAT WOULD ENGAGE DEFENSES/AVOIDS DOUBLE-TEAMS, AND OPENS UP ADDITIONAL PERIMETER AND INTERIOR OPPORTUNITIES....Remembering also, how INJURIES AND BURNOUTS affected our aging group last playoffs and our playoff run...

Jimmy has never had another #1 scoring option on his team. (Herro is not a #1). Now he has Steph.

Good times.

(Asterisk, he did have part of a season with Embiid in Philly, that was pretty brief though)

Expand full comment
dinohealth's avatar

No doubt, but it fell apart during last season's playoffs, due to BURNOUT AND INJURY. A SECOND, DEADLY PERIMETER OPTION AT SG, may avoid/limit/compensate for BURNOUT AND INJURY, while opening up additional INTERIOR AND PERIMETER opportunities during the long season and playoffs of a DUB CONTENDER TEAM.

I think our top priority should be the finding of/decision on, the missing deadly consistent perimeter shooter-scorer AT SG. It will give DRAY/JIMMY/TEAM THE ADDITIONAL KICK OUT OPTION THAT WAS MISSING LAST SEASON, restoring the SPACE, GRAVITY, AND PULL UP TRANSITION, THAT WILL FREE UP STEPH AND OPEN THE ROAD FOR HORFORD/POST/MOODY ADDED OFFENSIVE IMPACT AND OPEN INTERIOR OPPORTUNITIES FOR JK, ET AL, IN OUR ROTATIONS. I HAVE LONG-HELD PODZ IS BEST-UTILIZED IN A PG/CREATION ROLE IN OUR ROTATIONS, NOW THAT HE HAS IMPROVED HIS 3PT SHOOTING WHILE DELIVERING ASSISTS. IT IS THE FILLING OF THE VOID AT SG that will enable DUBS BALL SYSTEM TO DELIVER A CONTENDER EACH OF THE NEXT 2 YEARS.

I can't recall if someone else posted this, but the Athletic has a streaming guide to the 2025-2026 Warriors games. It might be behind a paywall: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6694669/2025/10/09/golden-state-warriors-nba-tv-how-to-watch-2025-26/

The most significant thing for out-of-market folks like me is that it confirms that NBC games are also on Peacock. So, no need for a 'TV' package (like Youtube TV) to get NBC games.

Unfortunately, the article is silent on whether you need a 'TV' package to get NBA TV in the Prime NBA League Pass subscription (think it depends on which package you get).

2. The article also implies that the ESPN app only gets you ESPN games (not ABC games).

3. Not from the article, but there is also an ABC streaming app, and the page for it claims you can watch NBA games on your phone or computer, or with smart TV apps (roku, etc.).

So, for out-of-market, I think you need:

ESPN plus

Prime

League Pass on Prime

ABC app

Peacock

in order to get all the games, and still cancel your TV service.

Easy-peasy (not).

So I predict the starters will include:

Steph, Podz, ???, JK, Horford

Kuminga is probably the player with the most polarizing basketball performance on this team. (We all know who holds the crown for non-basketball activities, even ones that occur on the court...) Is he a budding star who needs room to blossom? Or a role player who won't accept reality? Despite it all, the jury is still out.

His strengths: speed, elevation, ability to get draw fouls, and a repertoire of Kobe highlight dunks. His weaknesses: mysteriously poor rebounding, loose handle, and lackluster shooting touch. BBIQ? Dubious. Passing? Crisp! Defense? Pretty good on point of attack, not so much off-ball. Scoring efficiency? Well, it would be a lot better if he could just make his gosh-darned free throws.

Kerr wants him to be a more versatile and well-rounded player, so that he fits in more lineups. Understandably so—on the Warriors, a team built foremost to fit Stephen Curry and (to a lesser extent but still relevantly) Draymond Green, he needs to adapt to fit. Would he blossom if, instead, he were put in a system built around himself? Perhaps, but what team will take that chance? With no takers this offseason, he's back on a mission to prove it's possible anyway.

It often feels like the best way to maximize players' potential is to lean in to what they're best at, double down on what makes them unique. But what does that look like for Kuminga? It's not obvious that it's winning basketball.

It's just another preseason game so the final score doesn't matter, but we'll all be watching to see if Kuminga wins his minutes—in more sense than one.

Fantom's avatar

I think kuminga is watched in too much Detail. Looking at yourself girl. Applying the last few games. He’s really focused. More on passing and defense as has helped. I wish he would rebound more and go to the Basket more but every game will be a little different. I also have to watch him and think I am making a mistake.

Asher B.'s avatar

You're right on all counts. But I also wish to mention that a lot of this is shooting. We hear a lot about Kuminga with regard to intangibles, desire to win, decision making, and so on. Fair enough. Rebounding. And I am one of the many who think about these things. I include myself.

But on the other hand, it's worth noting that if Kuminga (and Podz, and Moody, etc.) could hit let's say 4-5 threes a game at 40%, most of the other concerns would seem minor. Just shoot better, ya lunks. it's that easy. Glad I was able to help.

It's interesting apropos of not much that we will have at every practice, Steph Curry, Seth Curry, Steve Kerr, Buddy Hield, it's hard to have better shooting to learn from. If that isn't instructive, go for that shooting coach that Eric interviewed.

You too, Draymond.

> But on the other hand, it's worth noting that if Kuminga could hit let's say 4-5 threes a game at 40%

You might as well ask him to pluck the Moon out of the sky and hand it to you on a platter wrought of silver. The difference between what you are asking and what he has demonstrated on the court is a massive, vast, incomprehensibly distant gulf.

A Kuminga who can do that is an unquestioned max player at his current seniority.

Kuminga is going to get his minutes whether he wins them or not. Green and Butler aren't going to play more than 30 minutes per game and they are going to miss games with injuries and load management. If JK ends up losing those minutes to Gui Santos he can kiss his dreams of a max contract goodbye.

Expand full comment
Hoops2518's avatar

Changing his number to 1 was not a smart move. I was just shaking my head when I saw it.

Anyway, I don’t see him losing his minutes to Gui.

The Warriors need him, like it or not. I can’t imagine him under these conditions not doing the things he needs to do get his minutes.

Ironically he is one of the keys to them winning a title. He can make a huge difference in how many games they win and we all know how close those playoff seedlings are likely to be. And for the 1000th time on this thread he adds a dimension they really need.

Been watching snippets of the preseason games. I get that everyone is hyper-focused on Kuminga because of the off-season contract issues, his limited playing time during the season and then his play in the second round. There is plenty of things to talk about other than him. That being said, I'm talking Kuminga. I am hopeful that his willingness to pass will continue on drive and dishes to where it's more focused and not forced. If he can nail down just that part of his game it will help out immensely. I would like to see the scouting reports from other teams. They tend to crowd him when he drives before he collects hoping that he will lose his dribble and turn it over. He could use this to his advantage to create more contact (he has done this already without help from the refs, so hopefully that changes to over the season) and get to the line.

I watched the first half of the Lakers game last night (missed it live).

One thing I don't think I've seen any comment about:

Buddy! was the guy guarding Austin Reeves and Gabe Vincent, even with Podz on the floor.

Mixed results:

Reeves beat Buddy on a drive/stepback that put Buddy about 2 yards out of the play, but really, outside of Moody, JB or Dray, I don't know anyone does a ton better. Reeves is pretty quick.

The worst thing I saw was that Reeves went laterally to the screener, and Buddy just left him. Reeves just dribbled behind the screener and put up an uncontested shot.

But, in general, Buddy did stay in front of his man, and challenged every shot hard. You can't fault the effort.

And, he had one great play. He got beat up high, but trailed and stayed in the play and ran the driver right into Post on the left block. They put up a huge wall, and made it an impossible shot.

GP2 came in late in the half and was taking the best shooter. I don't know if that was a reaction to Buddy's performance on D, or just a normal rotation.

Overall, I'd say he did mildly bad, but there were some signs of reading things a bit better that I liked.

Hollinger (NYTimes/Athletic) released his west ranking predictions (regular season). Some surprises!

1. OKC

2. Clippers

3. WARRIORS

4. Nuggets

And the rest (Wolves, Lakers, Spurs, Rockets)

Go Warriors, stay healthy!

OKC, Denver, Wolves, WARRIORS, Clips, Laggers, Rockets, Grizzlies, Spurs

I have OKC, Denver, and then 5 teams (Warriors, Rockets, Wolves, Clippers, Lakers) that I don't yet know how to rank because they too old and/or in too much flux.

I see no reasons other than age, height, and length not to put the Warriors third. But I haven't seen Seth or Melton yet, I don't know what will ultimately happen with Kuminga, and Butler and Moody are already banged up. So anywhere from third to play in for the Warriors.

The Rockets are still a plenty scary regular season team even without VanVleet. If everything falls right for them, they could even challenge for the best overall regular season record. However, since KD left the Warriors, his teams have always played better on paper than on the court.

The Wolves are basically the same team that knocked out the Curry-less Warriors minus Alexander-Walker. But exactly where they place in the standings basically depends on how much other teams in the mix improve or face injuries or other struggles.

Like the Warriors, the Clippers are old. On paper, they seem significantly improved, but the Leonard scandal looms large and Beal hasn't helped a team win in quite awhile.

For the Lakers, LeBron cannot last forever and I have yet to see the new, improved Luka in NBA action.

The Spurs still seem one year away to me, but I think they could beat any of the above teams on any given night with a healthy Wemby. I really like their core of young talent and Kornet should help.

Abaddon's avatar

> The Wolves are basically the same team that knocked out the Curry-less Warriors minus Alexander-Walker.

A reminder that the Wolves secured 6th in the West on the strength of Russell Westbrook blowing an absolutely winnable double overtime against them, which meant we had to fight the Clippers and Memphis just to make the playoffs, and face Houston in the 1st round.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda but the general perception that the Wolves are significantly better than the Warriors when we won the season series against them and got swept without Steph is puzzling to me.

I am weary of JK. I keep hoping his flashes of brilliance will materialize into something more solid, like Moses, but it has not. Maybe he will surprise me. However I have been hoping that for a couple of years and its not going well. I know lots of people still have high hopes including Lacob. I hope we did not overspend on this contract and I hope we get something in a trade.

While I am griping, is the Bay Area going to shoot itself in the foot by not televising local games? Not all of us can afford more than we already pay for cable. Just isn't the same on the radio.
