I’ve tried to pay close attention to Wiggins on the defensive end and besides a few easily correctable mental errors here and there he flashed enough potential to be more than competent on that end with time. His driving ability is pretty impressive as well and it’s something the warriors has lacked from their wings for a while now (outside of KD) so it’s a welcoming sight

Raptors playing Rondae Hollis-Jefferson at center. Wiggins is 6'8" . . . just saying

Great news that Andre is back on the court, and with a contender. He always seems to make the right moves for himself after being second-guessed by the pundits. I think with a couple more rings and clutch playoff performances, he could find himself in the HOF.

The Heat are absurdly deep, can't believe they just threw Crowder in on that Iguodala trade.

Wonder how much this draft influenced the Warriors decision to trade away Russell for Wiggins. If this draft class was heavy on wings would we have still made the deal OR waited until the summer to do so? That's about the only bad part in all of this: This year's draft not projected to be strong. I think one of the pundits said it best in that he thought that it wasn't necessarily weak but rather FULL OF UNCERTAINTY.

Not an idiot to question anything the FO does. Keeping it real. It's how we learn. I think it's gonna be a good deal given the situation. Interestingly: it appears Kerr did not want DLO.

Good article that makes the point of the lightly protected 1st round draft pick being the real centerpiece of the trade

https://www.sbnation.com/nba/2020/2/10/21131345/golden-state-warriors-trade-andrew-wiggins-draft-picks-timberwolves

> ...the Warriors are not in a bad spot. Even without the pick, their ceiling with Wiggins is probably higher than it would’ve been with Russell. With it, they have endless options to explore over the next 18 months, and a better chance to scale a mountain top they used to live on.

The Wolves were between slightly better and better with Wiggins on the court vs off every year of his career. That's not true of Dlo, and particularly not true of Dlo this year. Wiggins' contract is too big, yeah, and he's underwhelmed thus far in his career. But many of those who consider it the worst contract ever and all that don't seem to question that Dlo was getting paid slightly less and reduced the team's chance of winning a game from night to night.

Smart NBA front offices - which may not include the Timberwolves, and definitely doesn't include the Knicks - may well value Dlo much less than most fans and many media members do. And as others have noted, scoring guards who don't defend and seem to have little or negative impact on their team's net results are more numerous, both in the league right now, and in any given draft.

Remember how skeptical we were about trading Monta Ellis away, or firing Mark Jackson? I have faith in Myers and Lacob and Kerr to make good decisions.

Definitely interested to see how this Wiggins thing plays out for the rest of the season. I'm more optimistic that we can get more out of him offensively than I am defensively, but he did have a few possessions of nice post D last game, so that's something.

What's the likelihood that they took a look at Chriss more seriously for the starting C role in 2021?

He's looked ready to play rotational minutes with the main squad and seems to really embrace the many roles thrown at him.

Steph/Ky

Klay/DLee/Poole

Wiggins/GR3/Paschall

Dray/Paschall/???

Chriss (20 min/game)/ Robin Lopez or Jarrett Allen on the MLE (???)

I never bought into the doom and gloom about Wiggins contract and I'm not going to now. I just haven't seen much evidence that defensive stats, advanced or not, are all that accurate. It's pretty easy to state that somebody with an eFG% of .6 and a 3pt% of .4 is a "good shooter", figuring out who made a mistake on defense is a lot more difficult.

Nice article ddd!

Suggestion for a related article: Where we are now vs. letting KD walk last off-season

It’s complicated since we gave up assets in the Igoudala/KD/D’Lo deals and got assets back in the Wiggins deal. I haven’t seen anyone lay out all that plus cap implications (max slot vs. cap room?). That would help all of us to evaluate the trade.

Well, I guess the Reply buttons are on strike for better working conditions again (don't fear, Substack is alerted and wrangling those pesky buttons back up).

But yeah, BK I agree that the odds aren't great, but we've seen the Warriors develop players by getting them to focus on defense and simplify their offense (saved Javale McGee's career doing exactly that).

There are a lot of factors that could make this trade a win for the Warriors eventually (escaping tax, draft picks are good, Wiggins is good). I also think maybe us fans were over valuing what DLo was worth on his contract, and the cost effect of trying to get an elite wing (like maybe a massive overpay was the only way available to land a highly skilled wing with size, speed, and the ability to dribble, pass and shoot.

Great read duby. Will of course be rooting for Dre the rest of the way out, but it's still going to be tough to see him on the other side of the ball, especially after this last trade. As that goes, while I want to get excited about Wiggins first performance with us, this piece brought me crashing back down to earth: https://medium.com/sportsraid/timberwolves-crushed-warriors-in-wiggins-russell-trade-trade-deadline-nba-golden-state-minnesota-dangelo-c5fd32e0da81

It's a pretty convincing take-down of the idea that we can make Wiggins work or trade him away. I think when this whole thing shakes out, the only tangible thing we will see is that we hurt our chances of contending to get Lacob out of the repeater penalty. I realize that's no small accomplishment and maybe that means we spend more freely this offseason, but Wiggins makes it tougher to get back to the mountaintop no matter how that shakes out.
