I want to give Klay time. I want to give Wiggins time to grow into an Andre Iguodalaian 6th man of great positional defense, bad-looking threes that go in often enough in the playoffs to convince boxing commentators that it is a high-percentage shot, and athletic finishes in transition. I want us to hold off on sending good pieces away until we've had a chance to see a team with a healthy GP2, a motivated Dray, and a bench unit that is actually a Stabilizing Force That Launches Comebacks And Takes Care Of The Ball.

This is my heart talking. It could be wrong.

But Geeeez mary Louise parker, can we hold off on the "we lost the minnesota trade" talk?

I would love for moody to start over kuminga. Let moody space the floor with looney on the court, let kuminga play with cp3 and saric and be the other main focal point of offense. Cp3 Dario pick n pops, kuminga PnRs, kuminga post ups and let him run in transition.

Playing him next to Steph wastes his scoring potential imo, keep wigs and moody with Curry, kuminga with cp3 n saric

League personnel believes Lauri Markkanen is no longer untouchable and Utah would be willing to listen to trade offers, per @JakeLFischer. League personnel believes Sacramento, Atlanta and OKC would show interest in Markkanen

As much as I want Markkanen, I think the price is too high for us to get him. The only way we can get him is if we get a miracle like the Lakers did last year when they got DLo, Vanderbilt, and Beasley for Westbrook, Jones, and JTA.

Well, Markkanen/Olynyk/THT for CP3/Moody/Kuminga/picks works in the trade machine.

If OKC is actually going to start consolidating talent for a title run, there's nobody that can offer a better trade package... and they have so many picks, and so much existing talent on the roster, that they simply can't make all their upcoming draft selections. By my count, they've got 13 guys on the roster that should still be on the roster next year, and they've got 3 FRP & 1 SRP in the draft... then 3 more FRP in 2025 draft. With SGA, Chet, and Jalen popping, the time is now.

JK looked very comfortable in the offense and defense yesterday, often playing the handoff role, and playing great on ball defense. He still needs to get better at correctly anticipating and executing help defense, definitely doesn't yet stay strong enough against bigs, and still gets surprised by not getting a whistle, but he's getting more consistent with his performance, rebounding better, and his 3 ball is for sure coming back around too. Really promising stuff there, and he's eating Moody's minutes because of it.

I'm not calling it yet, but I do wonder if Draymond's forced disappearance is going to let JK take on some of that role, and show the team that he can be effective in that role. He was very active in screening/handoffs last night, to my eye.

Expand full comment

I think podz is eating Moodys minutes more than JK is. He lead the team in minutes while playing sg/sf.

Trade CP and Looney for Siakam. TJD starts at center. We get the scoring wing we need. They get the cap relief and size they need.

You're welcome. I will not be accepting the Executive of the Year award if nominated, I am just humbly trying to serve.

Expand full comment

The Raptors laugh at that deal; it does nothing for them. Siakam is a very expensive ($38M this season, so almost Klay-level) expiring contract and he can't shoot. He would cost us young talent, not old rejects, and we are unlikely to re-sign him because he'll cost north of $40M/yr. They'd want JK, maybe Moody, and maybe Wiggs. (I haven't looked at a specific deal to see what works; it isn't likely to happen.) Unless Siakam's going to be the difference in bringing us a title this season, there's no point in giving up that young talent, since he's gone next season anyway.

Expand full comment

Lol the Raptors would

Rather let both walk for nothing than take said trade. They want Murray from Sacramento as the centerpiece in a trade for Siakkam lol. I would have said the only realistic trade that i could have potentially have seen the Raptors making was Wiggins (pre absence), Kuminga, and a 1st round pick for Siakkam but if we were getting Pre-Absence wiggins why in the heck would we make that trade lol

Expand full comment

i just doubt we see your "Pre-Absence wiggins" again. MN went through the same thing with Wiggins (appearing/disappearing). Warriors made it work and there are GM's who remember "Pre-Absence wiggins" and are tempted. He still has value and that's what matters.

Height, speed, shooting, defense: pick at least one and preferably two or three. But at least one, ffs.

We're 0-1. We lost to a pretty good team playing really well at home. But we're only 0-1. Let's give it a chance here.

Expand full comment

Yeah, "Let's give it a chance here." Suddenly I'm feeling sympathy for Dray. And Kerr as well. These aren't just basketball relationships. I'm sure it's very personal. If Dray comes back all new and shiny, and Donleavy gets a rim protector or a star like Siakam, Warriors may finally start winning those close games. Thing is, right now, they're competitive against every team in the West. They've shown they can compete so you stay the course. But Draymond has to become a new improved Draymond every game w/o any outbursts and Donleavy has to do the Myers' magic thing. It's all personal considering the histories and would make a great story. The battle here is not just about basketball.

Expand full comment

Also, Clippers are #5 in defensive efficiency. Kawhi made Curry look bad last night.

Expand full comment

When Draymond is out, the fundamental issue with the Warriors is that they have no players who aren't guard sized who can handle the ball and make plays. This means that Curry will often share the backcourt with Podziemski (who started for this reason) and CP3, and it's just not sustainable defensively.

Kerr leans toward the idea that extra ballhandling and creation is necessary even if it sacrifices defense. I'd like him to go the other way and see how sacrificing the extra ballhandling and creation for the sake of defense looks. Problem is I don't think CP3 would take it very well if he was consistently being benched in crunch time for that reason. Maybe if they were winning but on a team that is 10-14, I don't think so.

Trading CP3+stuff for a bigger playmaker would help the team out a lot but if they dig too deep of a hole in this Draymond-less stretch, they might just throw in the towel on the season. Or at least that's what Myers would have done, I'm hoping that Dunleavy is more proactive.

Expand full comment

Even with Draymond back, "players capable of turning an advantage to real rim pressure" is sorely lacking... watching Powell's continuous rim runs off our double teams was illustrative...

Expand full comment

Curious what you think throwing in the towel would look like. Just letting ride with what we've got, or starting something like a mini-rebuild?

Expand full comment

I think it depends entirely on what Steph wants. If he wants a shot at another ring, he'll probably have to go to the East, and the Warriors will accommodate him. At that point, Klay, Dray, CP3 are just assets with relatively little value that would have to be offloaded somewhere.

If Steph truly wants to retire a Warrior, he has to indicate what his parameters are. Nothing happens without his buy-in.

I enjoyed the starting lineup, and would have liked it equally with Moody in place of Podz. Remind me, but when Klay has started at the three in the past, has it ever been alongside a second guard with even adequate size and defensive chops? Feels like those starting lineups have always either been tiny (with CP), or very soft defensively (with JP). Podz and Moody may not be all-defense, but they work on that end, and it looks better.

Another relatively close loss. I feel some hope because the energy was there. They never gave up.

I’m depressed now that I have that thought. It is how I thought for decades of losing Golden State basketball. Every close game was filled with possibilities that we just needed to make one more step to get over the hump. There was endless speculation about the step that never came. (Actually, We Believe, Steph Curry and Joe Lacob were the steps that did eventually.) When Championships did come, it became easy to slide into a mode where we took winning for granted.

All that winning has now spoiled me. The forever hopeful fan of years ago now knows how lucky we were to have a lock-down defensive team that could score off of stops. Assists and 3pt shots were setting records instead of fouls and turnovers. There were strength in numbers - but there was also the magic of our big three.

Rooting for the kids now (and I love them) reminds me of all the flash in the pan Ws players I loved in the 90s. Perhaps one or two can develop into a role player that will be useful, but unless we get Steph, Klay, and Draymond back, we have no chance. They are truly special. With Kerr’s help, only they can right this ship.

Save us, Obi-wan Klay-nobi! You're our only hope.

Stupid joke aside, I agree with the basic premise that this year is not championship material if Steph, Klay, Dray, *and Wiggs* don't get on track.

That said, I'm more than fine with seeing how the New Kids on the Block do for a while. We're going to need a couple of them in the playoffs, too, if we want to get past the first round.

And, also for next year.

That will change when steph is gone. If JK, podz, gui, moody, and TJD have a spirited playoff run, will be psyched and wondering what moves can be made to reach the finals again.

Expand full comment

Yeah, every loss this year has basically come down to execution and mentality. We usually start the game off so loose with the ball and have too many mental lapses from different guys. It all starts from the top. We’re still starting games like we’re the defending champs and can just go through the motions to execute the game plan. That’s where these ugly turnovers are coming from. Guys like Moody and Podz are doing a good job of bringing that spark.

I still believe we have what we need to turn this thing around. It starts with getting Draymond 2.0 back on the court and STAYING there. It’d be nice if we can bring TJD along too because we can really use his rim protection for certain situations.

Well, Draymond said it. He said, "I have a hard time getting out of my bed in March. What's a game in March mean?" Whatever is true in March seems also true in December. For all the OG's.

The teenie weenie silver lining in his suspension is that he's probably going to miss the rest of the month, and possibly well into January (if I were guessing, I'd say at least a month). He should be pretty well rested for a late-season push, if we're even within contact of the 10th spot.

Whether or not he'll be in shape to play basketball is another question, though.

I agree. We can turn this around. Everything must start with good defense. As disappointed as I am with him, the reality is that Dray is key.

Not saying anything new here, but I think we have to flip CP3 and picks for size. CP and Steph together is too much of a defensive liability, and Podz’s breakout alleviates the need for a backup PG.

I don’t know what the trade could be, because we’re not getting a rim-protecting, great passer, 3PT ace shooter for the assets we have. But we have to get better defensively while not sacrificing offense. If we could find a couple of guys like the Lakers did last year with Vanderbilt, et al., it would probably fix a lot. I love what TJD could be, but he ain’t going to be that this year.

Expand full comment

That Lakers trade made no sense at all. They got three players who each on their own were more valuable than Westbrook and Lakers got to keep a pick. Rich Paul must've been doing some under the table dealings or something in order to swing that ridiculous trade for LeBron and the Lakers... Point being, I don't think it's reasonable to think we can replicate anything close to that kind of trade.

> and Podz’s breakout alleviates the need for a backup PG.

He still doesn't play PG because he can't create, but if they can trade for bigger players who can create it won't matter. Agreed on the take. I also agree that if you have Steph Curry, you don't throw away seasons. The Lakers certainly didn't last year despite their horrible start and got rewarded with a WCF appearance. Hopefully Dunleavy isn't as detached from the job as Myers was.

In Australia what Giddey did isn't deviant. And right here in the US of A there are probably 250,000 18-year-olds accompanying 17-year-old and 16-year-old dates to the prom every single year. With pictures and everything.

Expand full comment

It's not deviant in Oklahoma either... when you live your entire life with something being legal/illegal, it's a real mind@#$% to have it all of a sudden be different.

For instance, I grew up during the "3 strikes/Marajuana is a gateway drug" era. I consciously know it's legal now, but I would feel sooooo uncomfortable walking past a police officer with a bag... imagine growing up in today's California and traveling, say, Russia to play professional basketball.

Not trying to say that the laws are right/wrong, and I do think that a 21 year old NBA player getting familiar with a HS student is a bit strange/icky... but everybody's coming from their own background/upbringing...
