So sorry (not sorry) to have cut and run when we weren't doing well, but it was my hubby's birthday.

Just wanted to hypothesize for when/if wiiggs will get out of his slump - at least optics seems to suggest he is currently in a slump (not sure what the numbers show).

A. Still getting back to shape - so lets give him at least 1/3rd of the season - thats about 25 games or so.

B. Loss of his bestie JP has effected him mentally. He wants to move to Washington this Feb and wont get out of his slump.

C. He is the same wiggins he has always been and the playoff Wiggs was an outlier, so there is no getting out of this slump till maybe the playoffs!

Just out on the Athletic: Coach Kerr will step down as USA coach after the Olympics. Cant blame him. There was also some news about him contemplating a sabbatical - of course, with Steph still in his prime, that has been impossible to do so far.

When it was mentioned that he was thinking about a sabbatical, but stayed because of the core, I wondered about him coaching Team USA. It's like Pop's run as the USA coach, if Kerr pulls off gold in Paris. I think Kerr will be done coaching once Steph retires. Riding off into the sunset with a stop at the Hall of Fame.

This one was a combination of a lot of factors. Cleveland played really well: few defensive mistakes, a ton of effort, resilience every time the Dubs made a push, and a slightly friendly whistle... whereas the Dubs looked like they were trying to keep up, but missed a lot of shots short, gave up some easy ones in transition, couldn't get a stop down the stretch... I have a feeling the next meeting between these teams should be pretty interesting.

With all the bleeding-related substitutions, I think the 1st half rotations got a bit out of whack. And credit to Cleveland, they clearly learned from the OKC game and covered the Paul-Saric pick-and-pop way better than the Thunder did. Not being able to initiate an advantage off of that or a Paul-GP2 PnR meant the second unit couldn't really get the offense started. I think the coaching staff is going to have to look at that and think up some more stuff, maybe put TJD in that unit sooner next time we see the Cavs.

Speaking of Trayce J-D, he brought some really solid contributions and squared up some stuff that had been out of place before he subbed in. Podziemski didn't have as good a game, but he looked respectable at least. I continue to think we did pretty well with our rookie selections this year.

It's not fun to lose, but I don't feel too bad about this one. Cleveland played very well and the Dubs tried, but were clearly tired. I hope we can at least go 1-1 on the remaining games of the road trip and then really get back on track at home.

Was it just me or were there a ton of Wiggins/Kuminga iso pull-up middies? What's up with that, Kerr couldn't possibly be cool with that could he?

Expand full comment

Cavs clogged the paint with their bigs all night so there was a lot of settling for jumpers. Kerr's gotta find a way to get something going to the rim when we play again on Saturday.

Expand full comment

they/kerr adjusted too late - there were more cuts and passes later in the game but we dug a hole and then couldnt get stops and they did

stuff wasnt working so i think its just natural for players to start doing hero ball/iso

Slater (I think) asked the OGs what they thought about playing/ seeing Wiseman, and they all had nice things to say about him, and expressed confidence that he'll figure it out and have a good career. Not sure if they are just being nice to a guy they liked as a person, or they really believe it.

Expand full comment

honestly - if he can just finally "click" on a few basic things/fundamentals he can atleast be a really good role player. he so far just hasnt figured it out + really isnt getting enough time against good competition. going to gleague vs lesser guys where he can just dominate wont teach him the intracies/tendencies he needs to really understand. if he really figures things out on the level of chet/wemby then he can join them since he seems to have the athletic gifts but he's really not showing the mental game.

i think he is a good guy and even works hard - but his fundamentals are too lacking to play vs pros and the real trait that hasnt really shown in the nba is whether he has that dawg/fight in him. inside he might - but we havent seen it with the eye test on the court

From all accounts Wiseman is a good guy that they all got along with.

or being nice to their bosses for picking/training him

After tonight's game, Cavs' next game is against the Thunder in OKC on Wednesday and the Warriors on Saturday. Hey, how come they play only one game before they face us while we play two?

Expand full comment

A couple thoughts:

*We've banked the OKC and SAC wins that were 50/50. A loss was expected but still frustrating.A win tomorrow in Detroit allows us to play with house money on Wednesday. A loss tomorrow might make us all feel miserable about an overall amazing start of the season.

*The broadcast focused on the most important stat of the night. Points in the paint: 58-24. You can't win when that happens. This was a game where we actually could have used JP instead of CP3. We needed someone with fresh legs who could get some layups.

*The most intriguing part of the season has definitely been Dray's 3P stroke. 3 straight games with 2+ 3PM. He only had 6 games like that all last year.

*Kuminga was terrible for 3/4 of the game and then really great in the 4th quarter. When he was taken out in the 4th, the Cavs immediately put the nail in the coffin.

*TJD looked really good out there. But man, missing FTs is the quickest way to annoy me. I really think he could have played more minutes if he was making them. He actually looked like he belonged. In certain matchups, he might fit better than Saric. That's interesting and not something I would have guessed.

*Podz looked pretty solid as well in his minutes.

*Look, only 2 players played more than 30 min and we're still 5-2. Just win tomorrow and we can forget about this game.

JP would have gotten eaten up in this matchup. He was always awful against teams with elite rim protectors (Lakers series for example). He would have gotten blocked multiple times.

Expand full comment

yup - i feel like he still hasnt developed enough counters near the rim. he's a lot more skilled at shooting and making baskets near the rim vs JK but they both get blocked or stumped too much. but even steph who has a lot more counters - didnt really drive enough near or at the rim

as for Dray - its been a good surprise and much needed w CP's slump, wonder if they talked to the devil and swapped or something lmao

the paint points would have been ok if we made it up elsewhere but we just struggled and they made enough outside shots to not lose there.

Eh. We spanked them for how many games straight? Streaks are meant to end. Bad shooting games happens. Steve will make adjustments. Remember, we're still in the "figuring things out" phase. Next.

We whupped 'em 12 games straight before tonight.

Anyone hear anything about the 14th roster spot yet? They have to fill it by tomorrow, right?

I guess I have to be honest with y'all. Yes, we're in negotiation. But I'm not sure I wanna leave my current gig given all the travel. Good news, though: I'm still considering their offer, partly 'cause if I do sign, at least I won't have to go to Cleveland.

Did anyone notice if a lot more shots were going off front rim than usual? This was basically game 7 of a long-ass road trip. And there's two more stops still coming. I would not be surprised if they ended up dropping both of the next two due to sheer fatigue.

Hopefully the 3rd string can bring it tomorrow, and time for all the young guns to find their second wind.

Their length and the miles really added up tonight. Not worried about it though. We should be able play good enough defense against inferior teams to pull out some Ws. I got my money on us spanking Cleveland the next time we meet.

Grizzlies get their first win of the regular season by beating the Blazers 112-100.

Someone had to win that one

That Cavs team is legit. They deserved to win. But holy heck, what is with Steph’s turnovers…

He has to make up for CP3's amazing assist/turnover ratio

CP3 with one assist tonight. Zero TO's, though

Expand full comment

A 1 over 0 assist to turnover ratio. His performance is literally UNDEFINED!!!

Chris Paul shut down by Cleveland. Too tall for Paul. Y'all saw it. Without a strong bench performance, it'll be a struggle, and the bench looked weak tonight. Love Draymond as a scorer. Splash Bros in tune but Wiggs needs some supplements. TJD needs to play more.

Couldn't watch the game. What went wrong? Was it "they too short, Ernie" or just grueling schedule loss or got too cocky (trap game)?

I hope we are not going the way 49ers did - excellent start with all around positive vibes - followed by 3 straight losses.

Short yet good shooting works. Short with bad shooting nuh uh

CNBAB - Could not buy a bucket

SOS - short old slow

They went 8 minutes without a FG - from 9 minutes left in the first quarter to 7 minutes remaining the 2nd, and they never recovered.

FWIW, TJD looked great. Even BP was getting rebounds and deflections. Just couldn’t shoot.

Shots and FTs didn’t fall. Rebounding was an issue. Just one of those games.

Expand full comment

Yep. I think you can say the schedule may have played a part as well. Some of them looked tired for stretches of the game.
