Man even if OKC gets swept in the first round I'm not sure I would make a single transaction if were them. The team is great, AND young, AND cheap. To be sure SGA gets paid, but 33 guys in the league make more than he does, and he's arguably a top 5 player. They would love to get rid of Bertans, he's got a dead weight contract, but I seriously doubt anyone else wants him at $17 million these two years.

SGA, Chet, the good Jalen Williams, Dort, Giddey, and a deep deep bench? I wouldn't make a move.

Expand full comment

They need to consolidate some of these picks for someone eventually. Giddey, Bertans and like 5-6 picks for another star is almost necessary at some point.

Expand full comment

Yeah that would get rid of stuff they don't really need and possibly bring them to the next level -- Unstoppable.

They have a crazy number of draft picks left too. They have 3 1sts (unprotected from the Clips, protected 1-4 from Houston, protected 1-10 from Utah) and an unprotected 2nd this year. In 2025 they have 3 1sts (their own, protected 1-14 from Miami, and protected 1-6 from PHI), a 1st-round swap, and 3 2nds. They have their own 1st and 3 unprotected 2nds (including ours) in 2026. They have their 1st, Denver's 1st (protected 1-5), a 1st swap, and 2 2nds in 2027. They have even more in 2028 and '29, including their own first, a swap, and 6 (!) unprotected 2nds in '29.

If a decent number of those convey, they almost have to trade something in the off season because they only have so many roster spots for young 'uns.

The deadline to hurry up and get here. So we don’t have to worry about any of the young players we love (or any of the Warriors’ remaining draft capital) being shipped off rashly.

Fwiw, I’d part with a bunch of unprotected picks for a young stud like Mobley, but why would the Cavs do that? We might as well target Scottie Barnes or Chet Holmgren while we’re at it.

Expand full comment

I'd guess it would need to be a Mobley for JK swap, right? There's no way the Cavs would do it for an expiring and Looney. I don't think their twin towers setup will work, so this at least allows them to get a bit offensive juice

IMO I think we're just not putting him in a situation to succeed in his current state. I don't know what it is but I'm willing to bet a reduced role would do him wonders. > A phenomenal shooter like him is not going to forget how to shoot the ball all of the sudden.

I don't think that's the problem at all. He used to be like a metronome ... space out to the three point line, jump straight up and shoot.

Now he thinks he's got a much bigger bag and that sideways leaners, Dirk Nowitzki stepbacks, driving floaters, double clutch threes, side-steppers are all things he can do well.

The side-step ones I can live with (you almost have to have that shot in your repertoire now), but the rest are just bad shots for him. He can make them, but not at a rate that really helps the team.

Given that he’s playing for his next contract, I don’t think he’ll accept a reduced role without a lot of kicking and screaming.

What are your travel plans this summer?

I'm (probably) going to Madrid, Malaga, Granada and maybe Valencia. Weird itinerary, I know but it's driven by where I might be able to move to in summer of 2025, and take a 3rd year of Spanish class.

Valencia is a very low probability thing, because the taxes there are eye-watering, but your video convinced me I need to take a look anyway

We’re in the process of making our house me available to fire survivors where FEMA pays their rent. That means we’ll be away for the next 12-24 months, so it’ll be lots of travel, starting with a four-month, 12,000 mile road trip in our little camper van. It’ll be from Oregon to L.A., then Route 66 to Chicago, then to Midwest ballparks, then to the Black Hills, Yellowstone, Pinnacles and back to Oregon. Then we’ll go north through Washington, then up to Alaska. BART big ass road trip.

Then we’ll do some international travel.

Lots and lots of students. It’s an easily accessible city, easy to walk almost anywhere. There’s lots of street socialization at night amongst students, as I said, with churros always available. I was there in August, and December and was perfectly comfortable both times. And I hate hot weather. But the usually narrow streets have large sunshades stretching from one side of the little street to the other so you are not walking around in full sun. In addition, it is a stroll-after-dinner kind of city. There are areas where you can walk with hundreds of people of all ages strolling, socializing, etc. Over the Christmas holidays there’s an interesting tradition in Seville where all these stores, houses, public places have belen. Those are creches, some of which have been around for centuries. It’s a really interesting and unusual tradition. And to top it all off, they have a beautiful Calatrava bridge.

Expand full comment

Thanks ... to be clear, I'm 63, so not really what people think of when they think of school-age ... so the socialization benefits would be a little lost on me. But, it sounds like fun.

After your post last night, I was pondering splitting a week between Granada and Seville. That might work out well.

Thanks for the info!

Expand full comment

Well, that makes a lot of difference, but I would still submit that Seville is a great town to spend time in. I enjoyed every minute of it and never hung out with the students at midnight on street corners. But it has an intimacy and a feel to it that seems particularly Spanish. Particularly the after dinner strolls. Also, as I said, you can walk almost anywhere. The cathedral is spectacular, the museum is great, and the food is fabulous. We also took the opportunity to go across to Morocco for a few days while we were there.

Of course, most people prefer Barcelona , but it is not nearly as easy a town to negotiate as Seville.

I looked at the standings for the first time in a long time ... it's not nearly as depressing as I thought it would be, given the doom and gloom around here.

We're 11.5 back, Houston and Utah are 10.5 back. Basically, we need to make up 2 games in 36 on both these teams to get to the 10th seed. That's doable. And LAL is at 9 back and there is some chance they might slide.

Almost no chance that anyone comes from behind us to pass us. Memphis is the next closest at 16 back, and we've got more games against them to keep them pinned that far back.

It will take luck, but mostly it requires getting healthy and staying healthy. But, it ain't ovah.

Expand full comment

so the rooting guide from this would be

- anybody above the dubs - lets root hard for them to lose

- anybody below the dubs, lets root hard for them to lose

So we are in a win-win situation as we are strongly rooted in rooting for the Dubs any which way you want!

Expand full comment
Feb 5·edited Feb 5

Rooting is a little tricker than that, I think. There are edge cases.

Say LAL and Utah are playing a game at crypto.com. A water buffalo charges onto the floor .... who do you root for it to eat? AD? LBJ? Lauri Markkanen? And if it's Lauri, why do you hate the Finns?

Most people would not know what to root for in those circumstances. My answer would be Danny Ainge, because, I've already thought about this, and 'Danny Ainge' is my answer to all 'whom do you most wish to be gobbled up by a scary/fierce predator' questions.

It's this kind of preparation that distinguishes the true fans from the Steph Curry johnny-come-latelys.

Now we just have to figure how to get both teams in a game to lose. 😜

Expand full comment

Root harder!!

Expand full comment

Yesterday, I mentioned that it will be up to Houston and Utah to help us get into the Play-In. They both have harder schedules than the Dubs and are currently losing their games as I write this. Of course, we have to win some games in order to climb and take advantage of the falling teams above us. I think they can do this but I'm not optimistic about a playoff run. Their D is non existent, at the moment. Letting Atlanta score 141 points is shocking. Even with Draymond back, giving up so many points in a game means you are not very good. Kerr has not even begun to fix this. The FO seems somnambulant to this as Curry scores 60 points. Nothing wrong with our offense but with an undersized, unathletic team, we gonna suffer.

Expand full comment

We just flat had nothing left in the tank in OT. JK fouling out didn't help when we ended up in OT either. But before that we were in trouble. We struggled to defend Okongwu and Capella. And even when we doubled Trae, he blew right past both defenders. Now admittedly that was after Wiggs went down but still.

Expand full comment
Feb 5·edited Feb 5

Well, I'm not expecting a championship, but I've long felt that the best predictor of playoff success is how you play in the last month. We have some time to get guys healthy, and then we'll see (as long as we have a good enough record to make the play-in tournament).

It's certainly a huge longshot to get to what I thought was their ceiling (Western Conference finals).

Chatgpt as dubs fan instaboner (for some reason kept making pub quiz references 😂)

Folks, gather 'round and let me unleash a rant of cosmic proportions about the Golden One, Steph Curry, dropping an otherworldly 60 points! I mean, we're witnessing Threesius himself, the destroyer of opposing souls, raining down treys like it's monsoon season. But hold up, where are the foul calls? It's like he's navigating a pub maze blindfolded, with the refs ignoring the blatant contact.

Steph, the maestro of the hardwood symphony, dances through defenses like a pub-goer navigating the crowded Friday night scene. He's like a chef in the kitchen, cooking up three-point delicacies that should come with a warning: "May cause defensive nightmares." Yet, the refs seem to be in some parallel universe, sipping metaphorical tea while Curry gets manhandled without a whistle in sight.

I'm telling you, if Curry's three-point artistry were a pub quiz, he'd ace every question, leaving the refs scratching their heads. The man is putting on a show, a spectacle of basketball brilliance, and the refs are playing hide-and-seek with their whistles. It's like they're handing out fouls as if they were gold coins in short supply.

In a world where Curry is the undisputed ruler, the Golden One dropping 60 points should be a feast celebrated with fouls raining down like confetti. But no, it's more like a silent pub where the jukebox is broken, and the only music is the swish of Curry's shots. It's time for the refs to wake up and acknowledge the cosmic force that is Steph Curry, the destroyer of opponents, the pub quiz champion of the basketball universe!

Trying to evaluate/understand the import/use of the❤️ in DNHQ land.

For example, is it considered impolite to heart oneself? I imagine most psychologists would agree it’s OK.

Two, does everyone go back to count how many hearts they have received? Tell the truth, now.

Three, do some people heart everyone?

Four, is it important to heart all comments about your favorite player?

Five, is it necessary to avoid hearting all positive comments about LeBron James or the Lakers?

Six, does your heart say: yes, I agree?

Seven, is it common to heart a comment by another poster just because you usually like their posts? Sort of like refs know what foul they probably should be calling?

Eight, do some people not give hearts to others whose posts they usually do not like? Or whom they find generally annoying?

Nine, are there people who prefer not to heart anyone or any comment? This would be the curmudgeon contingent. And

Ten, do some people see hearting as a way of spreading kindness and sunshine in the world?

I like this exercise :) I never heart myself, and usually heart others. There is little thought about it; if I have to think about whether I like a comment I probably don't. The common themes for comments I don't typically heart are they're overly negative or they come across as patronizing (or I just missed the comment).

Because it's just a spontaneity thing for me, I don't really avoid anyone specifically, although I do have people who I don't heart as much as others. I think it's a nice way to spread appreciation for the community, hence I'm exceedingly generous lol. It also serves a secondary purpose of helping me pay attention to what I'm reading; I also highlight a ton when reading technical docs, which is my preferred tracking method but isn't really easy to do on the mobile version of this site.

4. Heart the off topic random stuff

5. Dont heart myself

6. There is a poster that I never heart

7. When night night and someone else get into bigger picture capitalism and linguistics convos I almost always follow those all the way down to the end.

8. I always heart the laker jokes

Also felt like this was also the game where Kuminga really moved up the opponents' scouting report. They put size on him more, gapped his drives, and attacked his dribble a lot more. He's gonna need a mid-range pull up that he trusts to succeed against this type of defense.
