Just got back from a fantastic movie (Parasite) to only hear this tragic news.
RIP. Was never a fan but he did have jaw dropping moments and did have my respect.
His daughter was also on board and died with her father at age 13 along with a friend and it appears the friends father. Best wishes to all the families involved.
It is to early for him to die... which is just recently, he is started to reminisce and open up to the public all the past, games and greatness he did good or bad.
When he was still playing, you don’t know much about Kobe Bryant. He was a competitor and a private person!
For years I was envious of him and the Lakers, remembering when I saw him dismantle the Warriors at Oracle during Cohan Era, sending a game into OT with a slam dunk putback off a teammate’s missed FT. Then as we got out of Cohan era, I felt respect. Today I feel sadness but I am also grateful to have been there that night to have had a chance to witness his greatness with my own eyes.
I still remember this game like it was yesterday. The first time the Warriors felt like a meaningful team in my lifetime, going against the city, team, and player I wanted to beat the most. The Warriors built a lead in a hard fought game, but then in the last minute, Kobe hit a three to pull them within 1 and it was clear we were just going to be background extras for another one of his legacy movies. But then Stephen Jackson answered with a three, and revenge was back on the menu. But then Kobe answered back with a three, and I knew they were going to blow it like all the other Warrior teams. But then Stephen Jackson answered back again, something that wasn't supposed to happen for the team not wearing purple and gold, and it felt like punching a childhood bully in the mouth. Kobe's final shot went in and out, Jack Nicholson went to congratulate Jackson. That might have been the most impactful regular season victory the Warriors had in the pre-Curry era, at least for me. And it was because the Warriors had vanquished the supervillain of the league at the height of his powers.
Kobe was a larger than life figure. That sort of "invincibility" led to both NBA greatness but also some dark stuff in Colorado that has to be included in his legacy. But he was (and is) such a big part of the culture of the NBA, this is pretty surreal. I remember the only time I ever rooted for him, in the 2008 Olympics against Spain in the Gold Medal game, as he took over in the fourth quarter and led the team to victory. I'm not gonna lie, it was kinda fun to root for.
And now I'm seeing his daughter was on the helicopter as well. Awful. RIP.
I just saw this, what the absolute fuck. He was going to be one of those guys that was gonna hang around the game for decades as an ambassador. And more importantly, all his young kids are gonna grow up without a father. So tragic
