God I can't wait until August 7th. I just want this to end. I don't care what the actual ending is anymore.

He was never coming here IMO. Ainge wants too much and was hoping some team would get desperate enough…which no one has.

Lauri likely informed teams he wants to stay in UT and won’t guarantee signing a long term contract w the trading team (he’d wait til next summer to get paid more)…so his value in trade talks plummets because of this.

Lose-lose situation for everyone… cept Lauri cuz he’s going to get a bag while not having any pressure to perform

Yesterday's game was exhibit A in the case against Adam Silver's eagerness to turn the page on the Curry-LeBron-KD era. Utterly scintillating performance by three guys who, yes, have been ill-served at times by their GMs/owners/own decisions about where to play, but who were also disproportionately impacted by the new CBA. Engineering a league where we’re less likely to see those guys in high-stakes games is just complete insanity.

Before off-season, I knew either Wiggs or Klay was out the door for financial reasons, but thought we would always keep 2 of the 3: Wiggs/Klay/Moody. Now that Klay's gone, why stop there? Last year, per 36, you could hardly tell Wiggs and Moody apart. One player continues to be an enigma and a change of scenery is probably the only thing that's going to help him. The other is a young dude wasting away on the bench. As small as the differences are between them statistically, I would still take Moody and he is the one that might just get a lot better. The interesting thing is, if Wiggins was moved and Moody just stepped into that 27min p/gm Small Forward role, it helps with rotations. No more Wiggins at the 4 sucking minutes away from JK. Slow Mo would have a more definitive role as THE backup forward, Moody sliding into 2-guard slot at times gives Dubs a big lineup, and best of all, it opens up the door for GP2 maybe sticking around. With Wiggs gone, GP2's on-ball D is much more attractive. Maybe we keep him on a 2-yr vet min contract following this new season. I would love to have a guy like that at the end of the bench, break glass in case of emergency.

I'm pretty sure the Dubs are ok moving off Wiggs, but it hadn't occurred to me that a Wiggs departure may increase the odds of GP2 staying with the organization, and I would love that.

On the one hand, Wiggins has demonstrated an ability to reach a higher level of play, as demonstrated by ‘21-22.

On the other hand, Moody has not had enough of an opportunity to demonstrate what he’s capable of.

On the other hand, I question whether there’s anything we could trade Wiggins for that I’d actually want instead of him.

On the other hand, I don’t question Moody’s heart, effort and BBIQ like I do with Wiggins and all things being equal, I always tend to prefer home grown players.

Since the team presumably knows more than we do about what the deal is with Wiggins, I’m just gonna have to trust their judgement. The team seems to be talking him up as someone they expect big things from, but I don’t know whether for real, talking up his trade value, just wishful thinking or trying to light a fire under his cold Canadian ass.

Let’s get ready for another 40-44 win season if we are going to lean in on Wiggins

Yeah... it's an odd spot. I bet the Warriors have been "aggressively shopping Wiggins" as a way to let Moody's group know that they're trying to free up rotation space for him, while also trying to trade Moody to get him into a better rotation... but also not just forcing bad trades.

At this point, it's: look, Moses, we couldn't trade Wiggins for anything worthwhile, we couldn't trade you for anything worthwhile, take GP2's rotation spot. Make him expendable. He's an old, one dimensional, oft injured journeyman. Just take it.

Draymond talking him up- what he can do this year-I doubt thats because of increasing his trade value. I expect a lot - I hope. Worth seeing even if just to get more back

Expand full comment

Yea, getting rid of Wiggins would be ideal, but I think most likely he is staying put because his play plus contract make him too hard/expensive to move.

But yes we have too many wings. I find it hard to believe that some combination of Wiggins/Moody/GP2/JK won’t be dealt to either upgrade the team at the trade deadline if the Dubs are doing well, or dumped if not.

What’s funny is that last year was Wiggins’ only bad year. He was in the 81st percentile for on/off splits in 2022-2023. Personally, I’m pretty high on Wiggins bouncing back this year. Last offseason he had an injury that would’ve prevented being able to work out or even exercise much, got off to a predictably terrible start to the year, had a family emergency, came back, and played reasonably well in the second half of the season. He’s been healthy this offseason, so I would bet that he’ll have a solid year at the least.

And if we do get Markkanen, I’m very intrigued by a Steph-Wiggs-Kuminga-Lauri-Draymond lineup.

I've been advocating moving Wiggins for two years, now. I'm not sure that the Dubs have given up on him, though. I have, for sure. In the eventuality that Wiggins stays, you could still integrate Moody and JK into the starting rotation of Moody at SG and JK at SF with Dray and TJD. This would add both size and scoring. Bringing either Podz or Melton in at the SG would allow a faster pace at some point. Then, the 2nd unit would comprise some combination of Podz, Meltont, Hield, Wiggs, Anderson, and Looney/Post, with GP2 trying to find his place within it. We've got too many guards, imo. We need to trade out a bit.

Spencer is also a player that could handle leading the bench. He's steady, knows the system, and is unselfish. I could see him feeding Hield or Anderson or even Wiggs. Wiggs is also a good post up player. I have real doubts about GP2 finding his role with this team. Our bench has definitely gotten better but our starters are a bit questionable. Getting Wiggs out of there should clarify whether Moody and JK will be here for the long term.

Expand full comment

I still think Wiggs has value and even a good contract, but I think he hasn't been the same since his BFF Poole left. Although he missed a lot of games in 2022-23, his on-court numbers were in line with his 2021-22 production when he did play. 2023-24, his play fell off a cliff. So, I just think he needs a change of scenery. I would be happy with a couple of cellar dweller 2nd round picks. And, you're right, his departure would open door to rotations that make a bit more sense.

Serbia with Jokic on the floor: 31 minutes +/- = 0

Serbia with Jokic on the bench: 9 minutes +/- =-26

https://hoopshype.com/lists/cavaliers-free-agent-isaac-okoro-sign-and-trade-re-sign-or-sign-qualifying-offer/

-Isaac Okoro is drawing interest from several teams like the Nets. At the same time, Cleveland is also interested in Finney-Smith and Cam Johnson.

-Assuming Cleveland wants to avoid the luxury tax this upcoming season and Okoro stays, it most likely means that Caris LeVert or Georges Niang would have to be traded.

-If Okoro signs the one-year, $11.83 million qualifying offer, Cleveland moves above the luxury tax threshold. The Cavaliers would have to try and trade Okoro or another player to get below the threshold if that’s Cleveland’s goal.

Interesting Tatum did not play but White and Holiday played big minutes. I know I know, different positions but still probably tough to swallow.

Also, watching Lebron and AD it might be premature to think the Lakers are not serious contenders.

Lebron is arguably still a top ? player if healthy. Amazing.

Watching KD and Booker now with the gift of T Jones is another thorn in the Dubs side.

The west is so tough.

Thing I like about the Olympics is that it gets me invested in sports I wouldn’t have really watched. Just finished watching Coco Gauff’s tennis match and getting ready to watch the United States women’s soccer team here in 45 min

Second thing I like is that it’s going to take us through that August 6th opt in date for Marrkanen so we can have our minds occupied till then.

Final score indicates a rout. But this game could have been a lot closer if the US didn't shoot lights out on 3s (18/32) while Serbia was cold on 3s (9/37). US won by 26, but had a +27 edge on 3s even while taking fewer. Exchange the percentages on 3 balls between the two teams (Serbia going 21/37 and US going 8/32) and Serbia wins by 40.

US is not going to keep shooting that well, and opponents are not going to keep shooting that poorly. US also had 17 turnovers (including 6 from LeBron). There's a lot that still needs to be cleaned up.

Three-point percentages in part a reflection of extraordinarily good players being left open and the way they almost never are on their own teams

And, I thought the US made a lot of their shots hard, so it wasn't that they were missing a bunch of wide open shots.

Kerr with his classic “don’t double Jokic” defense. Might be a bit tougher to pull off in a 40 minute game though tbh, fewer minutes to tire Jokic out.

Not only do I believe both Holiday and White are better fits for Team USA than Jaylen Brown, I believe they are both better players than Jaylen Brown. Imo the Celtic “supporting cast” had a similar effect on Brown last playoffs that the 2022 supporting cast had on Poole, accentuating the strongest aspects of his game and allowing him to look amazing (obviously Brown is a lot better than Poole though). It is very possible that they excluded Brown for non-basketball reasons but that's a different conversation.

Embiid does the “stop and take a few seconds to survey the situation” so often when he gets the ball, I know Kerr hates that deep down.

Very obvious that the person LeBron enjoys playing with the most is Curry, he’s constantly looking for Curry or the gravity that Curry creates.

USA forgets a lot that you can hit the ball off the rim and it’s not goaltending. Coaches need to at least remind them during free throws, which might have been what happened with LeBron. He’s a basketball genius though so he might have been like Draymond and freelanced it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh4Y18uhHcU ).

I love that point differential matters which means there is essentially no garbage time.

Not a good defensive performance from Curry imo, didn't really matter though.

We don’t need 3+ “his pronouns are he/him”s from Wade per game, don’t oversaturate your sayings. I’m in the minority I’m sure but I’d prefer a more neutral broadcast for the Olympics, if they want the Team USA homerism then just give us Bobby Fitz.

Lastly, I think the USA is going to crush South Sudan in the rematch tbh.
