Free agency is approaching so I'm taking a look at guys that's realistically attainable at the minimum (who are potential fits IMO) and the only names I can come up with are:
What about a backup PG? I'm not excited about depending on Pat Spencer. I mean, I like the guy, and the Magnum jokes are fun, but I don't think he's the answer.
It says a lot about what their staff at Charlotte really thinks of Ball. I have to admit a bit of negative bias because of the dad but I think it was a smart move by Charlotte if I understand the value of the huge trade exception. Minny really rolled the dice on this one and there is a chance it could end up being a great move if Ball can be the rare person who really changes his mentality. I can see that 3 guard lineup with McDaniel and Gobert anchoring the D. Could be fun. Can Ball surprise us? Stay tuned. The Warriors path is only going to get harder as the big boys add a player or two. The more I read about SA and the Kentucky kid that just becomes a great pick for down the road. Do not sleep on Utah this year either. If Peterson is the guy a lot of people think he is, assuming all their bigs are healthy, they are no joke.
SAS and OKC are obviously formidable, but I am curious to see how they will manage egos and contracts. The disease of me has turned a lot of would-be dynasties into one-time (or no-time) champions.
This is where I think Kerr and Myers don't get enough credit. It's easy enough for fans to say that with all that talent, of course they won. But some very talented squads have not been able to make it work more than once. The Thunder, the Celtics, the Nuggets, the Bucks... none of them repeated. I don't see the Knicks repeating. The Pacers, the Mavericks, the Heat, the Suns all got there recently but didn't win, and their teams are largely made over already.
As for the Jazz, I'll believe it when I see it. Those guys have been good before, and maybe they will be again. But they're going to have to show me at this point.

I think the thing that separates OKC and especially SA is how young they are and they also have draft assets. They also both have proven cultures.
I will say SA has the best super young talent in the history of the NBA, by far, and they just made a significant addition in the draft if that kid’s knees are fine in a year. The problem these 2 teams have is each other and being in the same conference.
As far as Utah goes, I am not saying they are a great team but I think they will be in that 4 to 8 range in the West if Peterson becomes Kobe like. The West is just going to be brutal if that happens and Houston and the dreaded Lakers work some magic. You just know the Lakers are going to pull off something that has everyone screaming.
Defense, especially at the perimeter, will be the question at MN. McDaniel is excellent, and Ball's defense was better this past season than previously but we'll have to wait and see if that was an anomaly. Ball's D before that was not so good. Offensively, Ball will help both Ant and Gobert, gives them the playmaking they lacked, and can create for himself. Between Ball and Ant, their offense should be fun to watch.
And hey, Naz Reid is out of the Western Conference. That's a positive for us!

Well, he does discuss it in the video even though he’s not committed to it; in a nutshell you get a full season from two guys instead of half a season of one guy. Sabonis in PnR/DHO’s with Steph with Horford saving his body in a backup role. Derozan as 6th man could be the bucket they give the ball to when Steph sits 🤷🏼♂️
DeRozan can only score midrange and in, though. He's pretty bad from 3, can't even hit a 3 occasionally when you really need it, the way Jimmy does. He shoots 30.2% career from 3. That's worse than Draymond.
In the 3 of the 4 championships, the team was ranked top 5 on defense. In the other one with a fresh KD, the team ranked 11th. Mind you, this was when Draymond was at his peak.
Derozan and Sabonis are such poor defenders at key positions. I don't think they can score enough to offset it.
Yaxel should start and play 30 mins per game. At his "advanced age" - Yax is ready to soak up major minutes.
Last season, I was a huge advocate of trading for DDR when Jimmy went down. But it's a new season. Dubs have Yaxel right at the start of his prime with "no expectations". No pressure. Kerr came back to use these 2 seasons to "end the dynasty with grace", to go back to basics, recapture "playing with joy", and transition to the new era.
Do you see Yaxel at the 5? I know he's long enough to be a small ball center, but I'm hoping that they play him and Gui together with a center and the Ws up front are big, strong defensively, and able to shoot.
I see Yax more as a 4. But Kerr will play him. He'll be like the big version of Podz. (In terms of Kerr finding ways to keep him on the floor)

They did draft Mara, but they’d be foolish to think he’s a Hartenstein replacement in the immediate term (and he likely won’t ever be as good). They already have an experienced Dort replacement rostered in Cason Wallace.
Agree that Mara probably isn’t a year-one replacement for Hartenstein, but I wonder if his presence makes a Hartenstein extension less likely. That would have been another way to keep Dort while ducking the apron, by starting the extension at a lower number.
It’s been established that others disagree with this, but I personally find it somewhat surprising that they would let Dort go. Wallace is, as you say, a capable replacement and perhaps a better player overall, but there are still some specific match-ups where Dort is a better option (e.g. Luka, Tatum), and when you’re in the title window those kinds of tiny margins can matter.
I just realized, the last time we took a 6’8.75” 240+ lb forward with wing skills and a 7’3.25” wingspan from Michigan, he was Rookie of the Year and ended up in the Hall of Fame. And this time, he’s a bargain at #11.

From the Files of Long Form Thoughts No One Asked For, I've started to get pretty excited about the Yaxel pick.
Defensively I think he's going to struggle, especially early on. The one scouting report I found that focused on his off-ball defense labeled him as ball watch-y and disconnected from his man, prone to giving up backdoor cuts and relocation 3s with plenty of clips to back it up. And I expect quicker NBA athletes will give him trouble on ball. The wingspan is a shortcut to disruption though, and he should be immediately useful guarding forwards and as a mobile secondary rim protector. The tools are there, but it may take him a bit to get up to speed.
I absolutely LOVE the offensive fit. Grab and go menace in transition. Excellent finisher. Clean fit into Kerr's good graces as a secondary playmaker and connective passer. Good spot up 3PT shooter. Saw somewhere that he shot really well on open 3's, which I think people underrate as a skill. Yeah, making tightly contested 3's is great and all, but nothing will kill an offense faster than not converting when a high quality shot is generated.
I don't think he'll be able to self create at the next level like he could in college, but with Kerr-ball I don't think that matters as much, and there's every reason to believe he'll take advantage of the opportunities that are created for him.
He should fill in for Butler really nicely straight away on offense, and make for a lot of nasty lineup combinations when JB is healthy. I'm in, I'm sold. Feels like he just needs some refinement in a few areas to be a really, really good player.
I really do think we end up with Lebron. He's going to follow the Iguodala path and probably dive into Silicon Valley more while getting to play with his buddies without having to leave the state. It's going to happen and if the Lakers re-sign him to anywhere near a max it's good news too because that means they have no room to get better
I doubt Silicon Valley would have anything to do with it. LeBron's business interests are very successful in L.A., he's basically a billionaire, and if he wants to meet with people in Silicon Valley, he can take a short flight from L.A. to SJ or SFO anytime.
