Steph Curry and Draymond Green have both been ruled out tonight in the rematch vs the Timberwolves. No Al Horford or De'Anthony Melton either. Warriors finish road trip on Wednesday night in Utah. @anthonyVslater

Abaddon's avatar

Probably for the best, both have been pretty banged up of late.

Captain Jack's avatar

Don't know about you guys I'm excited to see real LJ Cryer big league minutes

Peacock only, tonight?

if so: how the hell does the NBA expect good TV numbers for the season when they essentially blackmail their most ardent fans, forcing them to subscribe to unwanted services?

I'm not 'feeling the love' here...

ananthd's avatar

For YTTV customers, Peacock games are live on the NBCSN channel. FYI.

BayesGT's avatar

The NBA doesn’t need the TV numbers, Peacock does. NBA already got paid

Mr.Plow's avatar

Well, if the numbers suck that might kill Peacock's interest to re-up on exclusive broadcasting rights. Or depress the price, anyway

BayesGT's avatar

I don’t think so. It’ll just tell NBC that they can’t shift everything over to their streaming service and force them to put it on their actual channel(s).

Mr.Plow's avatar

Maybe. Although if the numbers for both Peacock and the TV broadcasts are below expectations, it would be interesting to see which they prioritize

BayesGT's avatar

Sure if people stop watching basketball on every platform that’ll start some discussions no doubt. But comparatively lower numbers on peacock (or even amazon prime) i don’t think will result in anything other than the broadcasters prioritizing traditional avenues of viewership

Sabiscrashingout.'s avatar

That guy that climbed Taipei 101 with no ropes or harnesses really said it wasn't as challenging as climbing El Cap. 🫩

Goofus's avatar

Did you watch “Free Solo”? It won an Oscar and highly recommended! It was one of the most heart-stopping (and amazingly photographed) physical achievements I’ve ever seen, even knowing he was gonna live. I cant imagine anything much more challenging that that with any realistic hope of surviving.

jaxfor3's avatar

The biggest hurdle of climbing the tower was probably boredom for him. It was a cycle of the same moves that he had to repeat for however many floors there were.

stopnpop's avatar

A natural formation is probably way less predictable and repetitive than a man made structure.

Bemused's avatar

Not just predictable and repetitive, but big handholds and footholds. Some of the El Cap moves rely on features smaller than an inch. Every feature on T101 is 4-6".

Abaddon's avatar

Alex Honnold, and yeah it wasn't. Watch Free Solo, it's a really great doc, fascinating, and will give you a good idea of what the challenges were with the El Capitan ascent.

GlueAndBold's avatar

He also made a really good point- pro athletes are paid hundreds of millions, but when he risks his life crazily free climbing one of the tallest buildings on earth live on Netflix, he makes "mid six figures." I would agree with him that that is embarrassing.

Abaddon's avatar

Perceived entertainment value varies, it's really what the market bears. Why are the TV rights for the NBA so much higher than the WNBA when they're playing the same sport? Why does Taylor Swift make so much more money on her tours than other singers? Does risking one's life make it inherently more valuable? Maybe? But maybe not?

There isn't really an established market value for this kind of thing, it was a first of its kind. (Although I recall live TV of e.g. a guy walking on a tightrope between two skyscrapers, it seems roughly analogous to that kind of event).

PGBreaker's avatar

Yeah that documentary was 'Man on Wire' where he tigh-roped across from one tower to the next before they came tumbling down 9/11. A really cool documentary.

GlueAndBold's avatar

I mean, you are describing free market capitalism and I guess what I'm saying is that it sucks.

AttilaTheHun's avatar

Just because something is difficult or dangerous does not inherently make it valuable or worthy of reward. There has to be a demand for it, a market in some sense, for it to have value. To have a form of entertainment with a relatively small audience be of equal financial value to a highly popular form of entertainment, you'd need a government-controlled economy a la Stalinist communism. Even in modern China, where you have a state-guided hybrid economy, you probably could not sustain that.

NoOneEverGotFired4GuardinSteph's avatar

Netflix should release how many people watched it. Then we'd have a better idea of if he should've been paid more (my hunch is yes because it seems like a lot of people watched it in my spheres, but that might just be my spheres).

Aaron Eckhouse's avatar

"the more you risk your life the more money you get" has some obvious issues as an incentive system too

Abaddon's avatar

Okay, so, propose an alternative. How much should Alex be paid compared to Steph Curry, and why?

GlueAndBold's avatar

I can't answer that question, because as much as I love Steph Curry, I don't believe anyone should be paid $60Mil/yr. It's all out of whack.

BayesGT's avatar

Yeah man maybe he should stop doing this. Sorry the “oh look I might die for real for literally no reason” show isn’t attracting the sponsorships the NBA does lol

Alex Hohnold - free solo - watch that movie!!

I watched the early part live and was amazed how relaxed he was and interacting with onlookers. Could not stomach it as he kept getting higher and went to see somethng else!!

TwoRingTest's avatar

I would like it if they both sat, given the lowish probability of winning the game anyway, but I don't know if they are wired that way.

Goofus's avatar

Oh boo hoo 😢

stickdog's avatar

My guess is that both Curry and Green will not play in an effort to bequeath the grieving Wolves a gentleman's tie.

That would leave the Warriors with 11 available players, including their 3 two-way players. It would be nice to have Seth for a game like this.

Arnold's avatar

Yes, I think Kerr will sit Dray and Steph and give this one as a gentleman's gesture to Chris Finch and the Wolves.

AttilaTheHun's avatar

Not as a gentleman's gesture. I doubt that ever happens in the NBA, and it shouldn't. But Kerr might see a scheduled loss and decide not to wear out or risk injury to his aging stars.

ServantOfLuna's avatar

>>>“It’s kind of nice to come and try to forget everything for a couple of hours, because otherwise you’re confronted with it all of the time,” said Roger, a longtime season ticket holder, who spoke on condition that The Athletic only use his first name, given the hostile climate.

Did it feel like a real game?

“Not really,” he said.

As soon as the game begins, something just feels … off.

“Honestly what I felt is their group was suffering,” Kerr said. “The vibe in the stands, it was one of the most bizarre, sad games I’ve ever been a part of.”

One Timberwolves employee walked the concourse at halftime and said he couldn’t muster the energy to show the same enthusiasm he normally has.

“Nothing feels right,” the employee said. “Our hearts aren’t in it.”

And while there were a few chants and a sign here or there against ICE, the atmosphere did not feel charged. It felt like a gathering of people who, collectively, needed a break.<<<

Captain Jack's avatar

Please Steve. No more GP2 and Dray together especially with other smaller guards like Buddy against bigger and athletic teams.

stickdog's avatar

I just checked the stats on this. Kerr has played Draymond, GPII, and Hield together for just 75 possessions so far this season. Most of these lineups have done surprisingly well, but the one with Post and Curry to complete the 5 has been a total disaster in its 10 possessions to date: https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/team/10/lineups?on=4219&on=1373&on=1608#tab-four_factors

You can see here which lineups with Green and GPII have worked and which have not: https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/team/10/lineups?on=4219&on=1373#tab-four_factors

Note that both of them together are +2.9 net overall in 451 possessions. All Warriors lineups are +3.2 net on the season, so playing them together has netted just slightly below average results overall.

One of Cameron Carr's big criticisms is his lack of ball handling. Well, thats still a problem, he's recently begun demonstrating a greater passing ability than previously realized.

Over the last three games, Carr has averaged 21 pts/6 rbd/4 ast with 64% true shooting and 40% from three. This has pushed his season long AST% to 14% which is quite solid for someone whose time on ball is quite limited (he's either shooting/dunking/attacking closeouts.

He's already an elite volume shooter whose quite athletic allowing him to effectively punish closeouts and attack the rim. Now add that he's a very solid playmaker and you've got a really good prospect.

Now, he's really gotta clean up his positioning on defense/become more active diggin in off-ball because he really could be a far more impactful defender than he currently is.

Captain Jack's avatar

Is he really playing at 175lbs while being 6'5"?!

Arash's avatar
5dEdited

Definitely. He also has a 7'2 wingspan which adds to the spectacle. With that being said, I think he easily has the athleticism/frame to be able to add pounds/muscle given time in the NBA.

Keep in mind, the average height/weight of a SG is 6'5" at 205 pounds.

Captain Jack's avatar

Yeah. Was watching some stuff on this year's prospects and he definitely stood out to me as well. I have no idea where we'll end up picking or if we'll even pick but he has definitely caught my attention.

Arash's avatar

I'm also liking the look of this Keaton Wagler guy. He's 6'6 with an elite three pointer and just overall great scorer with a 65 TS%. He's not the greatest athlete, but he's helps minimize that by being a good passer with a 23 AST%.

What I'm most curious about is to see how he performs against higher level competition in the NCAA moving forward. Can he maintain his scoring/passing despite his relative lack of athleticism?

I'd think this is a typical part of how G-League scouting works? It's not all second round draft picks and dudes trying to make the leap from international pro leagues.

I recall this story about Selom Mawugbe quitting his job at Lowe's to play for the Sea Dubs:

Sleepy Freud's avatar

Not sure if it’s been covered, but 73-9 is officially safe. Thunder lose to Raptors, fall to 37-10.

They "solved" the game of basketball though hahahaha

TwoRingTest's avatar

and discovered that part of the solution doesn't necessarily mean winning every game.

It's kind of insane that became a goal in 2015-2016.

stopnpop's avatar

We kind of had to keep winning because of the Spurs. On this same date in 2016, the Spurs were 38-7... better than OKC's current 37-10.
