Great win. I'm expecting this team to play better and better every game as they gel and learn how to play in the system. Draymond coming back will help immensely.

Just want to say I appreciate your re-posting of all your in-game notes together like this, as someone who is unable to watch the games atm. Also the parts in them that read like non-sequiturs (though I know they made sense in the moment) are pretty hilarious to read throughout too. Thanks, Eric!

haha glad you appreciate them! I swear that 80% of them made sense in context!!

Hehe, I’ll take your word for it!

The team desperately needs Draymond. The defense and rebounding will both get much better and lead to more transition opportunities.

On O he's the team's best passer. He's such a great ball mover that shooter percentages go up just by getting the ball in a better rhythm.

In particular I think the transition opportunities and better flow to the offense will help Steph and Oubre considerably.

Expand full comment

We'll probably have to endure a few more head-scratching failed passes in transition though. Don't forget that he and Steph always miss a few that way.

Expand full comment

If anything, I hope we see more. The half court offense is much worse than it used to be and we have much a much faster transition team.

So while you don't want to be sloppy, you do want the team focused on trying to push it whenever possible. Even taking some risks. The extra couple turnovers a game being with the extra few buckets they get.

Beyond the game-winning shot...

Damion Lee on the season (per 36)

16.6 pts on .838 true shooting

7.6 reb

3.5 ast

1.4 stl

0.7 tov

+34.6 net points per 100 possessions (after being +8.6 last season)

Play. Him. More.

So... bench Oubre?

Expand full comment

The obvious place for Lee to get more minutes is to take them from Poole. Lee does pretty much all the same things, only much better. I think Kerr wanted to reward Poole for a good summer of work and see if it translated to the actual season, but right now Lee is better and one of the Warriors best players. He should be up around 28-32 mpg.

Or start Steph, Lee, Oubre, Wiggins, Wiseman

+100. Its gotta be this. and when Dray gets back, Oubre goes to the bench...where ill bet he gets his groove back and leads that unit.

Expand full comment

Wow... I was about to surrender to another tanking season, but Steph reminded me that a Steph team never tanks. Thanks Steph.

Damion Lee rocks. Game winner, solid player, cliché-breaker, and (sorry but believe me, I'm italian) the only NBA player who knows how to dress decently.

Wiseman is a wise man. Despite obvious experience limitations, he does only what can be useful for the team.

When Oubre will open the gates, it will rain buckets.

Expand full comment

The thing with Oubre is his low BBIQ. its a no wonder hes been traded 3 times in is young career...and for so little.

With that being said, i believe he can win his matchups leading the bench with his insane high energy...

Expand full comment

Chris Paul is “so little”? They really liked him in Phoenix. Honestly if he were hitting his threes he’s be great and that has nothing to do with “BBIQ”.

I love how you see the bright sides of everyone. You rock! Warriors fans, on to Game 4!

Just reading about Long Covid and what is happening to many people after they get cleared of the virus. Long term side effects are debilitating. Has anyone heard of any Pro athletes who have not fully recovered and show signs of Long Covid? I hope Draymond is not one of these statistics.

Expand full comment

In Italy several soccer teams have gone thru outbursts of covid to several players, but I didn't hear of any that were seriously permanently affected to the lungs. Regarding Draymond, remember that covid is a pneumonia, therefore it takes a while to recover full lung functionality

Im quite sure they will whenever they practice next...something like "what good can come out of this play?" Or "did you not see the wide open players?"

Drive n kick, baby. If Oubre cant get that through his head...im not sure he'll ever be more than a vet min player in this league

He’s already more than a vet min player in this league, so you’re essentially saying “He’ll never be as good as he already is.”

Still bummed about the Quese injury, but at least we got a win.

My player grades for this game! (All are graded against our expectations, not in an absolute sense.) In order of most to least minutes:

Steph: B-. Clearly frustrated for a lot of this game, probably a combination of his teammates and himself. I do think the refs saved our bacon by whistling enough FTs to get him hot again. He looked out of sorts for a lot of the game, but did a lot of work in the second half to put us back in the game. It was pretty ugly to see him rack up a Harden-esque stat line (44% from the field including 5/15 on threes, 9/9 from the line, 36 points total) but he also played hard-nosed defense, getting tons of deflections and steals or near-steals that too often didn't lead to points.

Wiggins: B. He wasn't exactly inspiring except in comparison to the hell-games he had to start the season, but he played OK. He got some clean looks and made them, used his length well on defense (was still out of position sometimes), and didn't force or half-ass stuff. Wish his touch around the rim was better though.

Oubre: C. His jumper is still in Antarctica but his ball-hounding defense was huge. Absolutely made Chicago's offense miserable, even full-court sometimes, forced a lot of TOs, and got way more rebounds than I realized.

Wiseman: C+. Tonight was a lot closer to the Wise Guy I expected to see at this point of the season. He got burned on defense, though he did make up for it a little, and his offense was a little more bottled up. If he keeps making 3's at this rate though he'll ruin the game (in a good way, 😉).

Lee: A. HELL YEAH GAME WINNER. His BBIQ and all-around solid play was on point. Not the most impressive game we've seen him play (he disappeared for enough that it was surprising he played over 20 minutes this game) but he didn't really screw up and he did make the most important play.

JTA: B+. He played like an NBA player, not a G-league callup. His offense (a whole 2 for 3 from the field) was not exactly inspiring but he did so much else at an elite level it was probably still good.

Paschall: C-. It took him a while to remember how he gets points but he did eventually look a lot more like the guy we all loved last year. His team defense was still abysmal.

Looney: B. He was a team-high +12 with solid defense and a few critical rebounds. Problem is, when he's playing in the high post the defense sags off him since they know he won't shoot or drive from 3 successfully. I would think the Dubs could use his (pretty good) screens to get some curl shots for Steph, Lee, or Mulder, but I didn't see much success there.

Wanamaker: B. So THAT's why they signed this guy. 5 assists and 4 steals and just being a general nuisance to the other team. He was a real presence from the bench in some key moments.

Poole: C. I praised his game before, but this time he looked sloppy. Still, 10 points on 7 FGA isn't bad, and he made some smart passes and other good plays. He'll have to keep improving to keep his place in the league, but there's enough reason to hope.

Mulder: C. He shot 2/5 on threes and did not much else. His defense wasn't worst on the team, but I don't think he would be earning more minutes on most teams in the NBA. Unfortunately, we're worse than most teams after taking injuries into account, so we might need him anyway.

Bazemore: DNP.

This one could've gone either way through a lot of factors but we really dodged a bullet with Markkannen being out with an ankle tweak during crunch time. He and LaVine were both hot and certain guys kept leaving him open on the perimeter. It's baffling that the team's 3-point defense is still this bad because it was obvious all last season we were horrendous at it, and it's still a problem.

But hey, the Bulls were pretty terrible, so it's a really, really a huge relief we didn't manage to lose this one!

Expand full comment

That last sequence was inspiring. Good smart take what’s available for the best possible last second shot. That’s a smart basketball play from Looney and Lee when the Bulls had Curry locked up.

I loved it. Do you think we can get Cleveland to trade us back Javale?

Expand full comment

A W is a W, happy. And we shot the 3 ever so slightly above league average! Wigs and EP are back (offensively, at least)! Kelly O still MIA but love his other contributions. He's on the cusp of becoming a net positive on the floor for us rather than the opponent, I can feel it.

Motor City up next... finally a squad that doesn't have a super talented wing that can torch us, one would think. Though at this point, most of my Dubs anxiety is around whether or not Draymond has long-term lung damage from covid. Get well soon Dray, need you more than ever with *checks notes* 2 whole centers left

Took a while for Paschall to remember how he gets points but he did eventually look a lot more like the guy we all loved last year.

Fun fact: Oubre could make his next 9 3-point attempts and would still be under 35%

Expand full comment

I’m happy they won, don’t care that it was the Bulls. I thought Wiggins played well, Oubre is still a mess (but it’s gotta get better right?), great to see Curry impose his will in the 4th, and Sydel’s husband was clutch (side note: I said he should start in the last game thread). I want some damn credit lol. Transition play is freaking horrible though, seemed like too many botched possessions. We still suck but whatever!

@Con_Chron

Steph Curry on Marquese Chriss' injury: "It's tough, man. We've had a lot of freak injuries these last two years."

Steph is pretty good about coding his answers. Reminds me of when he said they needed 'size' when he was asked who he wanted the W's to draft and they ended up drafting Wiseman. Wouldn't be surprised if we have a brand new training staff next year.

Expand full comment

Why does freak accidents mean new training staff?

Expand full comment

As they say "Once Is Chance, Twice is Coincidence, Third Time Is A Pattern" although I have nothing to back it when it comes to these injuries.

Expand full comment

It may or may not. I'm speculating that Steph just as frustrated on the injury front as the average fan and when you've had the amount of soft tissue injuries the Warriors have had over the last couple of years: Thompson's Achilles after a Danny green caused ACL tear, KDs blown Achilles after coming back from a Calf injury, Boogies blown Quad after coming back from a torn Achilles then perhaps this may be one of the areas that ownership may look at in the off-season to minimize injuries.

Makes sense a D. Lee would come off the bench to put Dubs back on winning track this season, just as a D. Lee did in the 1st NBA Finals Playoff Run...

Dino! You love your D. Lees!

Steph has sunk his last 64 the FT stripe. Needed all nine of them tonight.

And ... Damion Lee!! Been clamoring for more minutes for him for ages. Still think we would have had a puncher’s chance at the 2019 title if we hadn’t stupidly left him off the playoff roster. Hopefully this game sticks him in the rotation for good. Heck, I’d consider starting him and staggering Oubre and Wiggins more.

Expand full comment

Lee’s minutes have to go up.

Expand full comment

A lucky win. Steph brought them back and Lee was clutch. Lee and Mulder need more time. If the Dubs insist on shooting so many 3s, Lee and Mulder will give you a better %. Oubre needs to stop shooting 3s until he gets his confidence back. His athleticism is off the charts but his IQ may not be so good. Makes the same mistakes over and over again. Wiggins regained his balance.

No luck. They earned that win.
