Does the JellyBelly signing rule out going after Love if he gets bought out? I’d think so since he seems redundant, but want to know if I’m missing anything.

Expand full comment

Also, what do people think about how Bjelica’s productivity over the next 3 years compared to day, Sengun?

Expand full comment

Pretty sure it rules him out. You only need so many 33 y.o., 6’-10”, sweet-shooting, slick-passing, poor-defending stretch bigs.

Plus we're already gambling on OPJ staying healthy. Would we really want to take an similar gamble with Love at the same time?

So I guess we’re not using the TPMLE? This is the kind of owners maneuver that makes free agents think our time is over.

Expand full comment

You pocket the TPMLE for mid season. Even if you can get a trade exception for Oubre, you pocket that as well. Because these guys haven't played together, we can only assume what our needs are going to be by the trade deadline. What if Poole is injured and out for the year? What if Kuminga or Wiseman are suddenly great? And we still have to rehab Klay and Wise. Spend the first half of the season getting reps in, getting to know who they are as a team, who is capable of doing what, who is injured, who is not, then you go to your pocket and pull out the TPMLE & Trade Exception like a couple of no limit credit cards and go shopping for what you need. I think they focus on Oubre now and try to get a S/T and take a pass on the remaining FA market.

Expand full comment

The probability that team strategy is dictating the lack of use of the TPMLE, rather than Lacob’s cash flow statement is exceedingly low. Myers & Co are being tasked to show that every dollar of incremental spending results in multiple dollars worth of W-L impact, and that’s a recipe for not spending in a competitive market

well said

Yeah, I've been wondering if maybe it's an either/or proposition between the Oubre S/T and an MLE signing. Given the choice, I'd rather have a trade exception. More flexibility, more time to figure things out.

Expand full comment

The MLE (one) & Vet Mins (no limit) are available all year.

Expand full comment

Oh, you're right, of course. Thanks for correcting this.

Expand full comment

That's what we said about the DPE but they let it expire.

Expand full comment

Also true

Expand full comment

It's also the kind of maneuver that allows to sign someone mid-season in response to a team need or injury when most or all of the other teams are capped out.

Still plenty of guys out there to spend money on

What Bob Meyers should send Kelly Oubre Jr in an attempt to make up .... (SNL, can you guess the skit?) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt0spqQtMKg

I don't watch SNL much but I assumed it was this (technically not an SNL skit I guess):

No Kuminga or Moody for game tonight? I guess it's true. You can't develop and win a Summer League game at the same time.

The EC will be fun to watch this year. Nets, Bucks, 76ers, Bulls , Heat , Celtics , Hawks , Pacers, Knicks and Hornets should all be legit playoff contenders

Expand full comment

It's about time, already. How many decades have we waited for the East to be relevant, outside of LeBron? I think it's great. So many great players and story lines in the league now.

Expand full comment

only legit contenders are nets, bucks, and sixers though. i did like the hawks this year but idk about them. I also don't see bucks beating the nets if healthy.

Not sure what exact percentage Jeff Austin is getting, but if it’s 7%, he’s made a combined $28,000,000 on Steph’s two max contracts. And that doesn’t include endorsements and sponsorships, of which he likely gets a larger cut. Steph is an industry.

Wow

What realistic (gettable) playoff rotation-level pieces are left in free agency? From what I can gather, we're probably targeting a guard at this point (Jackson/Schroeder/Oubre)? And potentially a center to absorb minutes?

Oladipo. Although not sure of injury status

Danny Green was a starter for the #1 seed in the East last season

I don't know how to embed tweets so am just copying it down here.

Tweet from Bobby Marks (linked here - https://twitter.com/BobbyMarks42/status/1422604867231698946):

"Something to keep in mind that unlike in 2020-21 when teams in the tax saw their bill reduced, that is unlikely to happen in 2021-22.

Ex: GSW had a tax bill of $118.2M reduced to $68.9M.

The Warriors currently have $197M tax bill and will likely not see a reduction."

That's an astronomical bill and why I think there's very little chance we re-sign Oubre.

When Kuminga takes over the league as a rookie, an edit button will allow us to change comments expressing our angst over the Kuminga pick when Wagner was right there! to mocking the 6 teams that picked other guys before him, so Belilaugh and I would appreciate an edit button by his first game tomorrow.

Nunn 2 year 10m with Lakers

How many roster spots do they have

Expand full comment

two more spots, three if they get rid of McKinnie, so kind of similar to us with Paschall.

Expand full comment

Lol. And how many MLEs do they have? Are they now bogarting the Clips’ roster spots and exceptions?

Expand full comment

I think that'll be game for them. used their MLE and that THT signing is gonna sting, luxury-tax-wise.

Monk and Nunn are real solid for them. they addressed many of the question marks that people had, but it remains to be seen how much innovation can be wrung out of ultimately redundant skill sets.
