Warriors get outbid for Ty Jerome
Ty Jerome has not accepted the Warriors Qualifying Offer and should not until it’s clear no team will offer him a better contract than a minimum with $75k guarantee (the qualifying offer).
Ty Jerome has reportedly been offered 5m / 2y by CLE.
By my read of the (old) CBA, GSW can only match contracts up to 120% of $1,968,175 + $2,066,585 =120% of ($4.04m / 2y) = $4.84m / 2y. (Using the Non-Bird Exception… GSW can’t match contracts without using an exception.)
We are in a gray zone of my understanding of the CBA, where the exact numbers offered and the exact numbers in the new CBA matter, but I believe GSW cannot match this contract. CLE surely offered slightly more than GSW is allowed to match.
Slater agrees with me that GSW can’t match CLE’s offer to Ty.
Ty Jerome is leaving the Warriors for the Cavaliers, per source. ESPN first on move. Warriors extended Jerome qualifying offer, making him restricted free agent, but Cleveland can structure deal out of Warriors’ match range. Cost plus years made it so GSW had no plan to match.
Warriors — wait for it — get outbid for Donte DiVincenzo
(4:00 pm) GSW can use the non-bird exception to re-sign DDV at 120% of his previous salary, which was 4.5m, so they can offer him 5.4m plus raises each year.
I believe there are a number of teams that can beat that with cap room and for teams over the cap there is the non-tax midlevel exception (12.4m) and the taxpayer (over the apron) MLE (5m).
Interestingly, this Non-tax MLE is lower than the previous CBA (6.48m in 2022), so that puts those teams out of the running for DDV.
I still think DDV gets more on the market, but for people who want DDV back on GSW, it's not impossible and the longer we hear nothing, the better. https://www.spotrac.com/nba/cba/exceptions/
And…. he’s gone to NYK for 50m / 4y, kind of out of our range.
Free agent G Donte DiVincenzo has agreed on a four-year, $50 million contract with the New York Knicks, Jason Glushon of @GlushonSM tells ESPN. DiVincenzo reunites with his Villanova title teammates Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart to bolster the Eastern Conference semifinalists.
Why haven’t GSW signed a point guard yet?
You have to admit, it’s a bit of a hard sell to a PG to come to GSW on the minimum… “Hey, we love you and you’ll play as backup backup point guard behind two all-time great point guards. And on days that one of them is resting, you’ll be… backup point guard. In competition with our first round pick. And in an offense that doesn’t always put the ball in the PG’s hands. Other than that, you’ll get all the minutes you can handle!”
I assume they will stagger Steph and CP3 rest when possible, except maybe on back-to-backs where GSW goes on strike. Compared to another team which might be able to offer a straight backup job… It might be time to go looking in the G-League for a PG
Why haven’t the Warriors done more???????
Don’t be like that. Did you forget a few days ago the Warriors just made a massive overhaul to the team (remember the Chris Paul thing and trading a quarter of the team?).
Also, GSW signed one of the best free agents available: Draymond Green.
Also, the entire league is literally conspiring to prevent GSW from getting new free agents. No, seriously, the new Collective Bargaining Agreement went into effect July 1 (yesterday!) and it punishes teams like GSW that are above the salary cap much more heavily than on June 30.
The biggest issue is that last year GSW had a Mid-level Exception of $6.479 million. (They signed Donte DiVincenzo with it.). This year, GSW have no exception to sign new free agents. They can only offer a minimum contract, which is between $1 million and $3 million depending on years played in the NBA. This is the same contract that literally every team in the league can offer, so it might be a while before GSW can land a free agent since targets might want to wait for a better offer.
