Paying Klay just to pay him for what he meant to us already happened when we gave him that contract when he was hurt. In his own words, “who does that?” (from his 2022 ESPY award speech).
We didn’t owe him anymore after that imo; after that, any contract would be based on what he was doing for us and what he might do for us—“what have you done for me lately?” basically. So paying/not paying Klay based on his current value is fair, and smart. If Klay really does feel disrespected, that’s just noise to not take into account. And if it’s not based on anything truly disrespectful but just the fact that he wanted to start and make more money and do or demand more things he’s just not worth then at the least the ledger comes out in favor of the Warriors, again given that he got that big contract from us previously which he didn’t play all of the years for. And he acknowledged and aprpreciated that.
Whatever changed for him to feel disrespected, again if it truly wasn’t anything that was offensive, just makes it easier to move on imo. The kids on the squad don’t need that sourness, and frankly, dysfunction poisoning the environment for their development.
I seem to recall that in certain families, the members will get into a conflict before parting to make it less painful to leave. Who knows? Maybe something like that happened on one or both sides of this parting...
I'm curious why we haven't been mentioned as a Brandon Ingram destination. He's big, he's skilled, he passes. He's coming off a dreadful playoffs, but he was really great against a good Phoenix team a couple years ago.
He's got a spotty injury history? It's pretty indistinguishable from Markannen's.
The big contract? - Sure. It's same thing with Markannen except you can actually negotiate that extension now. Whereas any trade for Lauri means you've got a sweat out a hot free agent market next year.
Markannan seems to be at such a premium right now, and there's a guy who I think is an equivalent talent who seems to be attainable at more of a bargain.
As a side note - with the trade exception an interesting guy to go after might be Vezenkov who the Kings just dumped to the Rapors. 6'9 shooter. Got hurt and wasn't great for Kings last year, but also not bad. Had been considered the best player in Europe prior to that.
Good luck, Klay, and thanks for the memories. All season I was saying we needed change and it was pretty obvious what that change needed to be, but it still sucks losing him to the Mavs.
OTOH, I'm liking what our team is looking like heading into October. Should be fun with low expectations in a wide open NBA
The Warriors have agreed to take back two second-round picks to complete today's Klay Thompson sign-and-trade to Dallas and, by taking back no salary, will create a trade exception just shy of $16 million to use for their next moves.
Yeaaaah, I'm not firing up the Tourney machine until Markkanen is off the market. Though to be fair, I had an absolute blast looking at the second round prospects. They were way more interesting than any of the first round prospects.
So now the Warriors can send Moody, GPII, their 25 and 26 first round picks and those 2 2nd round picks to Utah for Markkanen. Ainge enjoys the good laugh the Warriors have given him and signs off on the deal.
I mean, they'll probably turn the worthless 2025 second into a midrange 2025 second by attaching a bunch of cash to it to move up, but for the most part it's not a "needle mover" as the kids on Twitter like to say
He has an interesting accent. I couldn't place it at first and thought it sounded vaguely Texan, but after he talked a while I realized it must be the fusion of Dutch and Puerto Rican. (He's from the Netherlands but his girlfriend is from Puerto Rico and he was staying at her house when he was drafted.)
He said a lot of good things in the interview that are inspiring.
Also, the amount of knowledge he had about other Dutch players he could spout off the top of his head was impressive in its own way. I guess that's not necessarily an indicator of high BBIQ, but I feel like it bodes well.
Love the Melton pickup — would much rather have him than Klay or CP3. One mild concern: does he obviate GP2?
And another thought: does he make Podz marginally more available, say, in a trade for Markkanen?
Generally, I love a three PG rotation of Steph-Melton-BP, as I think you can play any two together while staying strong defensively. And there’s now no need to dumpster-dive for a backup PG scrub in the CoJo or Wanamaker mold.
Still need another legit scorer with size, tho. If not Lauri … DeRozan, anyone?
I think he makes Moody and/or Podz marginally more available. I don't think you fully invest your mid-level in him if the plan was to hand majority of minutes at the 2 to one or both of those guys.
Of course, maybe it means Wiggins is on the move and Moody/Kuminga slide into his minutes.
If we're looking for another scorer w size...why are we not one of the teams interested in Brandon Ingram?
I like Melton in a vacuum but with every ballhandler except Draymond still being 6'3, seems like this is just going to result in a lot of Curry/Podz/Melton three guard lineups. Without obtaining a larger ballhandler it seems like they are just doomed to be playing super small for the rest of Curry's tenure. Too bad about George.
Klay Thompson's antics behind the scenes have been 'equally exhausting' as Draymond Green's, per @JDumasReports

Did he say he's speculating? The way he writes it as questions leaves open that he could be speculating, or he could be just trying to put a vision in the mind of the reader instead of spelling out the gory details.
This does not surprise me... Kerr had to talk to him 4 times about a bit of a role change... the team had a players only meeting to tell Klay to stop chucking shots... it's all kept a bit under wraps until after the break up.
He’s been sulking off and on since the team kicked ass with JP at SG to start the ‘22 season (pretty much the best they’ve ever looked in the post-KD era).
And he’s only intermittenly shown the effort or production/efficiency to back up the sulking. Especially since he was pulling $40M+ a year.
Yeah, I’m in jilted loved mode for a bit … with time, I’ll look back with love on all the joy he brought me. For now tho, I’m basically team “F that guy.”
Yeah... He could have come back for a $50M/3 year extension at any point in the season. He chose not to. Then he chose to "peace out". I see that he's hurt, and feel for his loss... but he's made his own decisions here... and I don't particularly like how personally he took everything. I did always like those stories how he wasn't gonna sacrifice for KD, or how he ignored Monta when Monta told him not to shoot it, and then shot it anyways... but those always felt a little off to me in some way.
I wish him well in Dallas, maybe he'll accept his role of "stand in the corner, and wait for Luka or Kyrie to pass you the ball."
> I did always like those stories how he wasn't gonna sacrifice for KD, or how he ignored Monta when Monta told him not to shoot it, and then shot it anyways... but those always felt a little off to me in some way.

The difference in visible effort level last season between Klay and Podz/Moody was almost shocking at times.
You would think the team would keep it under wraps for what Klay brought to the organization. But it seems more like they want to head off any public blowback for letting him go.
It cuts both ways, though, right? The organization took care of Klay pretty well, imo. And from my read of the negotiations through the summer, Klay was very openly complaining through the media about the organization, without a thought of how well the organization took care of him and valued him over the years.
There were reports he felt disrespected by the contract offer. But nothing came out about his thoughts on the character of the people in the front office.

I’m thinking that if you play both of Melton and Podz together at the 1/2 with Steph off the floor, you can probably get away without a backup PG. Podz is talking about working on his skills as a point in summer league this year, and I buy it in general.
I choose to remember Klay driving and hanging to hit the and-1 reverse lay-in to tie the score in overtime against the Thunder, the tip-in/backboard pass to himself to beat the Kings, and all of the nonononoYES! game 6 heroics.
All of his exploits on the court were more enjoyable because before, during and after each game he was singularly Klay Thompson.
I remember early in his career, nervously watching his postgame interviews like a helicopter parent, hoping that he wouldn't embarrass himself, wincing at his awkwardness, and hoping that he would not say or do something that would be ridiculed by the cool kids/cowards on the internet,. Then I grew to appreciate and embrace it, from the genuine surprise he showed when someone asked him if he had considered sacrificing shots for Kevin Durant to the random appearance on local television talking about scaffolding.
I will remember fondly how every celebratory gesture he made was unironically and unapologetically dorky. The weirdly vigorous chest-beatings and fist pumps, the deeply unintimidating mean mugs, and the cheerful oblivion with which he ignored any modicum of shootaround etiquette.
Catch ball? Shoot ball. For a number of significant stretches, he was the most unstoppable streak shooter on the planet. Sorry to see him go, grateful to see him best.
I think we’ve addressed the need for POA defense, and the wing rotation looks solid. To me the roster is light on shooting, and especially the spacing with 2 of Dray/JK/TJD/Loon is tough.
I would prioritize:
1. Stretch 4/5 (preferably 5). Maybe this can be Post, but I’m not counting on it.
2. Secondary scorer to take the offensive burden off of Steph.
3. More 3 point shooters for spacing (maybe this can be Waters, but I’m not sold on his defense)
Edit: what really stands out to me is that almost all of those players besides Steph and Waters are below average shooters for their position. Not only do our 4s/5s not shoot, but our 1/2/3s don’t have a ton of gravity either.

Ingram - several years in the league, with one All-Star selection and a playoff record of 2-8. Hard pass.
By that measure there are basically no players worth acquiring. Markannen's out.
So who will the Warriors try and get with the $16 million trade exception?
The summer of fun will continue!
Just catching up right now.

So 1 Dallas, 1 Charlotte?

Sigh, 2031... so far away...
True, but it'll likely be a higher pick then than the 2025 draft... probably. (The West is still hard to predict, after all.)
Any word on which picks these are?

I wanted a 1st round pick, but Mavs would have to be idiots in order to do that.
The Warriors were primarily looking to save money in this deal, but you can't receive nothing so they went for a couple worthless seconds to get a TPE
I mean, they'll probably turn the worthless 2025 second into a midrange 2025 second by attaching a bunch of cash to it to move up, but for the most part it's not a "needle mover" as the kids on Twitter like to say
I don't think that would be bad, but CHA is the one offering up the draft capital to accept Josh Green. I imagine the haggling was about:
- CHA didn't want to pay a 1st round pick for Green
- DAL didn't want to chip in a 1st and in fact wanted one of the CHA picks
- GSW said WTF give us both the picks you cheapo or we'll leave
You forgot the fourth line:
- DAL said OMG FOINNNEEEE... we'll give also you the furthest away draft pick we can
yeah I'm not hopeful about these picks... at this point, it's almost the principle of the thing
Are the picks both from CHA? Let's see what MDJ can do with a high second rounder.
Edit, looks like one is a 2031 DAL, who knows what the world will be like by then!

Yeah, I agree, seems like he knows hoops. Hoping he has a good year and can keep up with NBA players
It was a nice interview. I'll transcribe as a future subscriber gift. Podz also had a good interview today.
Yep, I posted the Podz link about 800 posts ago, busy day!
If he can shoot off the move like he says he thinks he can, that'd be pretty intriguing
I also recommend playing to the end to hear from AV, now I'm fired up, any way I can suit up for summer league? Put me in, coach!
Hopes he can play in Vegas, probably not before that

It'd be hilarious if Lakers got DeRozan. He's an aging veteran who can score at will, but compromises your defense as well.
Saw a note that Demar wants to go to an LA team.
Close enough!

Perhaps it's jilted love mode. But you're not wrong. Klay was surprisingly sensitive, especially given his 'What, me worry?' laid-back persona.
And in a fair world, JP would have /started/ ahead of Klay at least until the 22-23 season, when Poole left the building long before his body did.

So, state of the roster:
PG: Steph, Podz
Small Wing: Moody, GP2, Waters, Melton
Big wing: JK, Wiggs, Gui
Big: Dray, TJD, Loon, Post (TW)
12 rostered players + 1 TW. Needs?
How can Melton be 4th on the small wing depth chart? Dude is getting $12.8M and is our major FA addition of this off-season.
