Lakers so old they're asking that all games be played half-court.

Another great breakdown. I definitely took note of that savage Wiggins dunk and thought, "Oh, he's having a game now!" Funny thing is Wiggins "having a game" is almost indistinguishable from how he always plays. He's always going to do that exact crossover rhythm dribble into a contested 3 (or long 2!), and end up scoring about 18 points in total. (Readers: do you remember him having a 40-point game at Memphis last March, or a 38-pointer against Phoenix at the end of last season? Me neither.) But his rebounding feels stronger this year, his defensive improvements are still holding up to the eye test, and I'm loving what I'm seeing on the drive-and-kicks in this video. Soooo glad he just went and got vaccinated so he can play and we can cheer for him without a big cloud hanging over the team like what's happening to some east-coast teams right now.

"people are a little confused about how Wiggins did not score exactly 17 points" Cogent. Very cogent. (madly checks dictionary for definition of cogent, which helps...not at all. Decides to leave it as is cuz it makes him seem smart.)

Yeeesh, I took the liberty of watching the LAL-OKC highlights. Lots of pain for everyone including those ending airballs and RWB getting chucked and then snapping at the ref when he wouldn’t go (fine?). The icing on the cake is the final margin of victory came off a completely lucky 3 pt chuck by SGA to end Q3.

One of my favorite moments was Melo making a traffic cone look like prime Scottie Pippen as Dort drove straight to the rim for an easy dunk.

Expand full comment

I did the same and two notes: OKC announcers called Russ a "Turnover machine," which sits about right. Second note: Lakers with the EXTREMELY RARE two airballed three-point shots IN FIVE SECONDS. (Monk, Carmelo off the stolen inbound.) Somewhere, Reggie Miller is shaking his head.

Exactly! I don't know which game you all saw [parts of], but Westbrook won that game for them. He got a quadruple double! He's really picked up his playing with Lebron out. While his "made-shots stats" have not improved yet, those really are not everything. Advanced, ESPN's new WESTBROOCK advanced stats (their updated CARMELO ranking system) show how he's already improving his number of attempts. If he keeps up that dramatic improvement in attempts a few more made shots will certainly follow. Speaking of Melo, BTW, some people saying he is getting on in age. When it comes down to crunch time, all I see is echos of his Airness. Showtime indeed!

Upset night! Lakers, Nets, Bucks, Celtics, Suns all lose. And Clips are headed that way as Cleveland leads by 14 with 4 minutes left.

Expand full comment

I'm not sure if the Nets losing to Miami is an upset this season. Time will tell.

Expand full comment

Miami last year was burnt out, as Pat Riley said at the end of the two years race. This year the have PJ and Kyle, and the original core whithout Jae Crowder and Andre. They seem scary

Clips get clipped by the Cavs 92-79. PG13 scores the same number of points as rookie Evan Mobley (12). Both teams combine to shoot 12-61 from the 3 point line (only 3 for 20 for the Cavs). PG13 0-8 from downtown. I love the upset but that must have been a rough game to watch. Ugggggly!

Cavaliers used their size to beat the Clippers. Here are some interesting stats I found:

Points in paint:

Cavaliers: 48

Clippers: 34

Rebounds:

Cavaliers: 57 (14 off.)

Clippers: 36 (9 off.)

Turnovers:

Cavaliers: 21 (Clippers scored 15 points from them)

Clippers: 14 (Cavaliers scored 19 points from them)

Free throws:

Cavaliers: 23/27

Clippers: 8/13

Harrison Barnes for the win! So given the events of tonight, we should be more impressed by the Dubs squeaking past both the Kings and Thunder.

Expand full comment

Yes. But less impressed by them beating the Lakers and Clips?

In any case, current Pacific Division standings:

GS 4-0

SAC 2-2

LAL 2-3

LAC 1-3

PHO 1-3

The most surprising thing here is Phoenix. I would bet money on the being the team to dig out of this fastest. They good

LAC played an absurdly good game against us. Even if PG was on fire hitting contested jumpers, their basic running of their offense and defensive coordination seemed really polished. Have a hard time believing they'll stay below .500.

1st Q: Lakers 41-19

2nd-4th Q: Thunder 104-74

Amazing. Glad the Thunder got the W; good on them.

But Westbrook outdid himself. Better than a triple double is a quadruple double! 20/14/13/10 is a hell of a line. Points/Rebounds/Assists/Turnovers!

I opened my "nba scores" Google search tab just in time to see .01 turn into "Final", and I thought, "that's nice". Then I looked at the quarter scores and starting laughing maniacally.

Funny story time!!

I was on my way back from work jamming to Mrs. Officer, which is a catchy Lil Wayne song about him having a . . . ahem . . . "relationship" with a female cop.

While, I was bumping that at a stop light, a police car rolls up next to me . . . with a female police officer. Lil Wayne was singing "wee uh weeh uh" in the background and we locked eyes. 😂

My light turned green, but before I turned, I very calmly stated . . . "Gives fuck the police a whole different meaning", and drove away. I heard her cackling behind me as I made the turn.

OKC young guns bringing it on. SGA is a star in the making. Teams with good pace are giving the Warriors problems.

This is their Championship. They’re getting blown out by 35 next game.

Dave McMenamin

@mcten

The Lakers shoot a blistering 17-for-25 (66.7%) in the 1st Q and lead OKC 41-19 after one. AD has 12p; Russ has 5p 6r 6a.

What’d I’d tell you. It’s been like this since 2015. Most of these teams want to measure themselves against Curry and the Warriors thinking that just because the dude is of average NBA height and athleticism they can match up well if they go hard then don’t have the legs the following game

What'd you tell people, again?

Lol that the Thunder would get blow. Out. I was wrong. I need to reassess my takes. Got some about rookie class but gonna save those and let the seaso. Play out.

I got to this comment late because the Thunder are up 4 on the Lakers early in the fourth and I just saw Josh Giddey get an and one on Avery Bradley.

I do think there could be something to your theory, just not sure it applies to such a young team.

Expand full comment

Also the more I think about it, an old team like the Lakers might not have the legs for back to backs, at least in the second half. So you might still be right.

Westbrook rocking the Quad dub: 17 pts / 12 reb / 11 ast / 10 tov

Also, Ty Jerome with a +28 in 14 minutes? Holy hell. What kind of epic collapse did the Lakers have? lol

Expand full comment

Wow, thank you to the Thunder for not deploying their secret weapon Jerome against the Warriors I guess.

Have no idea how the Thunder had the lead in the fourth, will definitely be watching the highlights if they pull off the win though lol.

Thunder with the 8 second violation with 17 seconds on the clock and up 3, damn, they gonna blow this?

I'll bet it's also because the motion offense makes people run way more if they want to defend it. But I think you're right about the people trying to prove themselves against Curry over and over after all these years.

Ok, watched the vid, my first actually, love the breakdowns. Best shot, all 5 warriors in the lane with SGA, while 4 other okc outside 3 point line. Amazing what you see when you slow shit down. This really shows what connectivity means in the NBA. Defense is all about staying connected, everyone on a string, rotations are everything. It's hard to really get until you freeze frame it.
