>>>Anthony Slater: Warriors ‘shutting down' Jonathan Kuminga sign-and-trade discussions. Their stance is that he will be on the roster to start next season.”

“They’ve been pretty firm in the last few days, saying there’s a reason why it’s called ‘restricted free agency ‘and not ‘unrestricted free agency,’” Slater said. “They kind of hold the leverage on his future. Their preferred path clearly is the offer they put on the table; it’s short-term, it’s tradeable, that’s how they pitched it to Kuminga …”

“Regardless, they say right now they’re shutting down sign-and-trade talks; they found nothing appealing there. And they believe he is going to be on the roster. Their stance is that he will be on the roster to start next season.”<<<

Which is the right way to go about it. The Warriors are under no obligation to take a bad deal to make JK happy especially when he can just take their offer and defer his happiness for 6 months. If the market was all that hot for JK somebody would have cleared the cap space to make an offer. He will have 3 months or so to prove to the other teams why they were wrong not to do it.

Apparently, Kuminga has been offered 4 years 90 million by the Kings/Suns but they're unwilling to give up assets needed to make the deal palatable for the Warriors (Keon Lewis or Keegan Murray presumably).

Between the two, given Keon Lewis's overlap with Podz/Moody/Melton, I'd much rather secure Keegan Murray. Of course, that remains highly unlikely.

Monk at his currently salary is tradeable IMO if we want to clear the books at that point

Expand full comment
AttilaTheHun's avatar

If all we wanted to do was clear the books we could stand on the QO and either let someone put in an offer sheet we won't match or let JK walk next summer. I assume the FO wants to actually get something of value instead.

I don't see a deal happening with SAC unless they improve their offer significantly. Devin Carter is a hard pass. Monk is an undersized shooting guard, and we have enough of those, especially if we sign Seth or GP2. I also have no interest in a lottery-protected 1st, especially from SAC, which is likely to wind up in the lottery. So I'd pass on that Monk deal.

Take everything about this situation with a big grain of salt.

I don't see how anything JK's camp has to say about who is being reasonable and who isn't makes the least bit of difference. The various GMs probably know what the score really is, and they surely know agent BS when they hear it. Public opinion means zilch in this situation.

EA explained before that the QO ($7.9M *until 10/1, TBD after) stays on the books.

Expand full comment
Eric Apricot's avatar

The QO stays on the books until Oct 1, when it expires.

Expand full comment
AttilaTheHun's avatar

More specifically: "Qualifying offers expire on Oct. 1, but can be extended [by mutual agreement, as I understand it]. However, the extension of a qualifying offer cannot go past March 1. If the deadline passes and the qualifying offer is neither withdrawn nor accepted, the player continues to be a restricted free agent. Teams and players are free to negotiate a new contract after the qualifying offer expires as the deadline only affects the player’s ability to accept his qualifying offer."

https://www.nba.com/news/free-agency-explained

Also note that July 13 was the last day for teams to unilaterally withdraw qualifying offers to restricted free agents. As I interpret that, the Dubs cannot now withdraw JK's QO without his agreement.

Expand full comment
WCoastD's avatar

Oy, details! I thought the typical move is to give a new QO at that point to maintain the rights to the RFA, which sits on the books.

So, I guess, I need to correct the $7.9M hold number to TBD >Oct. 1?

Sigh! So tiresome this back and forth. Sean Marion retired 10 years back with 135 million in salaries. Really wish JK would do the Marion/Aaron Gordon things and focus more on the team aspects of ball than the one-one aspects. He can easily make 200 million if he were to do so. If his gripe were about minutes/role he really only has himself to blame. All said and done I think ends back on the Dubs with him him guaranteed 2 years low 40s but waiving the NTC.

Expand full comment
tempprofile's avatar

I don't know but it wouldn't be cheap as the potential payout would be so high. JK and his agent are foolish if they go that route. It is all risk and there may be to reward at all. Based on his results so far, JK is a solid league average player. Guys like that get offers around JK's QO. You can only parley potential into a bigger payday for so long.

Expand full comment
Hoops2518's avatar

What is so difficult about JK is that there are a lot of respected people who say that in a different system he has the potential to be a very good player. He is not the only one tooting his horn and he is still very young.

If I were him I wouldn’t want to play for the Warriors either. It is just a very unfortunate situation. Wrong place and bad timing.

I believe the Warriors are as much to blame or probably more to blame than he is. They drafted him knowing his skill set. They decided to keep him the last 4 years. They acquired JB which was a good move but they knew it would make the JK situation worse. Square peg round hole as the system stands.

Expand full comment
AttilaTheHun's avatar

If you recall, JK was very raw but was expected to be drafted in the top 5 or 6, based on athleticism and potential. The Dubs apparently didn't expect to have a shot at him. When he slipped out of the top 6, they grabbed him based on his potential ceiling. At that point, I don't think anyone, including JK, knew what he would or could become. It was not based on his skill set because he didn't have many skills.
