For him to re-sign, he would need to really ball out and have the Warriors come with $40M AAV at least. $150M/5 years starts at a paltry $25M in the first year.

I don't think there is actually any confirmation that Podz is starting despite what was said below (I do see the Emerman tweet but I think he probably typoed and it didn't look like a sourced statement) so I'm going back to the assumption that it is Curry/Richard/Butler/Green/Horford.

SI: The local TV rights are a mess. Regional networks are shutting down. Others are in bankruptcy. Others are, in your words, “teetering.” How big a problem is this, and is there a solution?

AS: It is a significant issue for the league right now. It’s been a large part of our historic business model, and for our teams, a major revenue source has been the distribution of these games in their local markets, largely through cable and satellite. Many of our regional sports networks only just emerged from bankruptcy and others are now defunct.

I’m not overly concerned, because in the same way several of the major streaming services were saying publicly only a couple of years ago that live sports were unlikely to become part of their model, they’re now all embracing it. In the same way that they’re embracing sports for national and global distribution, they will discover the value of local distribution as well. By way of example, a local game on average has twice the engagement of a national game, meaning a fan in Milwaukee or in the Bucks’ market is likely to watch a Bucks game twice as long as a fan outside of their region. As the marketplace responds to what the viewers and consumers want, there’s no doubt that these local games are highly desirable for fans in those markets.

As traditional television continues to decline, and that decline has only accelerated in the last few years, people’s default watching becomes streaming services as opposed to traditional television. They’re going to want to be able to get these games on those streaming platforms, and the streaming platforms are going to want to differentiate themselves in the marketplace by being the one that carries those local games. Lastly, I think as the marketplace just demonstrated the value of NBA games nationally, by virtue of that example I gave about in terms of engagement, there’s absolutely no reason why these games proportionally should have less value locally than they do nationally. If anything, they should be worth more locally.

Expand full comment
tempprofile's avatar

The obvious solution is for the local team to own their local streaming rights and be able to sell that subscription to whoever wants it, in market or not. I can't see any reason why Knicks fans living on the West Coast shouldn't be able to subscribe to the Knicks feed or for LA or Warriors fans on the east coast to do the same. They don't need the cable companies.

NBA is the actually teams... Board of Governors is the owners of league I think.

League office would/could take a cut, but if the team owners saw an advantage they presumably could manage to pull it off.

Expand full comment
tempprofile's avatar

More accurately the smaller market teams would hate it as I assume League Pass revenue is evenly split. That said, there is no reason that they couldn't do a 60/40 split on streaming revenue and League Pass still serves a purpose for people that are just basketball junkies and/or don't have a home team.

Very astute observation.

Expand full comment
DFiB's avatar

So... his optimistic take is that we're in for some chaos over the next few years as the "traditional" local broadcasts go under, and the streamers all fight for our eyeballs, each requiring some sort of subscription to pay for more content than we want? Sounds like the same 23$@#%^#$ing business model that drove up the costs of cable in the first place. Just through the internet instead of a dedicated cable... so yeah, color me unthrilled.

Expand full comment
Chadara's avatar

Yeah, it would be nice if the local sports teams could set up their own streaming services for their games and related content. Then we would not have to pay for things we don't want and the profits could benefit the team.

Honestly the best alt jersey I think they've put out in quite a while. Honestly, might be an improvement on the original black "The Town" jersey, which puts it in contention for my favorite overall?

- Really good shade of brown that seems like it'll complement a lot of skin tones? Which is rare. It has a pretty classy sepia-tone look to it. Pretty unique, too, since it feels like everyone uses black but nobody uses brown in their jersey designs.

- Brings back the beautiful oak tree design, which also pays tribute to the place the Dubs played their best ball (but also all those years of suckage that preceded it). Oh yeah, tree and brown are also a natural fit.

- The texture on the gold and all looks great too.

- Simple, effective composition. Not trying to do too much or get weird with ghostly bridge silhouettes or that ungodly blobby "rose" that you could never see while it was tucked in.

ESPN.com season predictions/rankings has the Warriors 8th in the NBA, 6th in the West. I like their Bold Prediction:

"Bold (but realistic) prediction: Golden State earns home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The Warriors were one of the NBA's best teams after trading for Butler last season, and they retained every perimeter player while adding Horford. They will finish with a top-four seed for the first time since they won the title in 2021-22. -- Kram"

I think there is a lot of pointing to that stretch with Butler. While it was great, it was also the softest spot of our schedule last year.

If we play anything at all like that over a whole season, I would be quite surprised (pleasantly, of course).

Does ESPN not understand how the playoffs work? 6th in the west is not home court advantage. 6 plays 3 and 3 (Rockets in their article) have the home court.

Welp, my prediction of Richard starting went bust. Oh well, I'll be sure to make more incorrect predictions in the future.

Personally I would have started Richard though, wonder if there's some ego management in the decision or if he doesn't care about guarding Reaves/Doncic as much as pressuring the Laker defense.

Well I just listened to Kerr's press conference and looked at Emerman's tweet and I don't see any confirmation that Podz is actually starting over Richard. Should have asked for/checked the source if someone didn't provide it, oh well. I still think it clearly makes more sense to start Richard, like a way better decision, so hopefully it happens.

Probably not Horford; Kerr said in the same interview (probably) the Podz starting is drawn from that it's really hard to start someone on a minutes restriction and be able to play them at the ends of games because then they're sitting for long stretches of time which is also not good for old guys.

Expand full comment
dinohealth's avatar

Meh, Horford is one of those rare pro-OGs who will impact the game whenever he plays...Kerr needs to figure out how to keep them warm with 6 minute rotations guideline...As for PODZ starting at SG, the jury is out, hoping for the best in the days ahead....

For reasons that elude me, baseball has a smaller home field advantage than most other sports, much smaller than for basketball.

Expand full comment
AttilaTheHun's avatar

In baseball, it depends on the stadium and how the team is put together more than the crowd (not to say a home crowd doesn't help). For instance, the Giants play in a pitcher's park, so when they have strong pitching and defense, including outfielders with range to cover triples alley, they have an advantage at home that might not translate as much in hitters' parks on the road. A team with a lot of left-handed power hitting can benefit even more if their park has a short distance to the RF fence.

Expand full comment
Sleepy Freud's avatar

Seems kind of intuitive to me —basketball is faster-paced and more momentum-driven than baseball, with fans closer to the action. As a fan, it definitely *feels* like you’re affecting the game more at a basketball game than a baseball game, especially when you’re part of a really raucous crowd.

Expand full comment
Abaddon's avatar

Rewatch some of those OKC v Golden State highlights from 2016 and it's crazy how loud it gets. Bill Simmons talked about how he came out of those games with headaches because it was so loud.

Expand full comment
Mr.Plow's avatar

It's an interesting phenomenon, because batting second is one of the largest rule-influenced effects of being at home in sports, but home teams still only win around 50-54% - even in extra inning games where you'd think that would be a massive advantage with a runner already on 2nd.

I would guess it mainly comes down to how extremely random hitting a baseball into play can be, coupled with the natural limitations of only getting to play your best hitters 3-4 at bats a game. Or not being able to save your best pitchers exclusively for home games, while an NBA team can play their best players basically the entire game be it home or away

Expand full comment
stopnpop's avatar

In addition to that, I think that the the travel schedule is just more brutal in the NBA. One team may have been on the road for a few games, coming in to play a team that just got to sleep in their own beds the previous night. In baseball, the teams play a series and so the home "rest advantage" is less.

Expand full comment
Sleepy Freud's avatar

It’s generally assumed 2-2-1-1-1 is the slightly more favorable option for the team with home field advantage, as it precludes any possibility of the other team winning the series in five games while having played more home games. I think that’s why the NBA switched from 2-3-2 to 2-2-1-1-1, even though those last three games can be a logistical PITA if the teams are on opposite sides of the country.

Hey, you never know! Remember when Klay-gate happened in BKN because Gui went off and basically helped them win the game?

Like JK and Moody, he was also pretty young when drafted, and he's just starting to enter the doorway to athletic prime years. Look at photos from 2022 Summer League to media day earlier this month:

I think his physical tools are somewhat limited, but I have no doubt he'll maximize them, just because he plays very smart, and he is reasonably quick. His ceiling is probably a rotation big, but that's where I expect him to end up, too.
