The Warriors defense continues to be mind-bogglingly good. The Heat made a ton of *really hard* baskets this game and still lost by plenty. GS wreaked absolute devastation on Miami's gameplan.

Also, did the Dubs do drills of how to avoid Lowry's bowling pin defense on fast breaks, or what? The whole team seemed to see it coming and avoid it perfectly every time. It was kind of amazing seeing how much they had him figured out there. (Though, as either Fitz or Kelenna said, credit to him for even being back on defense in the first place.)

Heat didn't score for almost 3mins from 4:00 in 4th quarter. Dray had 3 blocks during that period, each busting up a different Heat possession. Give him DPOY already.

GPII had a steal also during those 3 minutes.

Hopefully we get an E1P for those 3 mins

Poole is extremely explosive. You can really see that on his cuts to the basket. He’s only going to get better and better at exploiting that with more and more experience

That was an awesome moment. I suspect we all went through that same emotional roller coaster with him. From “Seriously what the flying fvck is going on????” to “Ah well … shit happens, it’s basketball, we’re leading the game and playing incredibly in general, no one got hurt, and Klay is coming back soon. Swish these FTs and carry on…”

Don't look now but the Lakers are playing better than anyone not named Golden State Warriors, Phoenix Suns, Utah Jazz, Chicago Bulls, Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, Memphis Grizzlies, Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets, Dallas Mavericks. Washington Wizards. or LA Clippers

Expand full comment

I love dunking on LeBron and the lakers as much as anybody, but maybe we tune it down a little?

Expand full comment

Don’t understand hating or insulting another team. Bob Cousy‘s book talked about having to hate the people you were playing, but that’s from a players perspective. And it wasn’t just you hated one team, your emotions focused on the people you were playing against. It would pollute my enjoyment of the game if I were sitting around talking about how much I hate this team or that team or this player. Sometimes I don’t like what they do, like Devin Booker pushing Aaron Baynes onto Steph Curry, crushing Steph’s hand. But I don’t hate the Suns for it.

Expand full comment

I agree with not hating. I don't have any actual hate or even strong dislike for anyone I don't personally know.

But I think it's in the spirit of sports to have rivalries and say things about the rivals that mock them. The players certainly do that to each other on the court all day long. And then they go out to dinner after.

If you ever hear me say that I hate the Suns, please interpret it to mean "I enjoy rooting for the Warriors and in that spirit I am from the comfort of my own home pretending that I have a personal beef with some strangers in Arizona." But actually, I don't hate the Suns, I don't hate Devin Booker, I don't even love Steph Curry. I *sports-love* Steph, I jump up and down on my couch when he hits a three; but I know the difference between real feelings and sports feelings. Steph's not my actual brother. I wish him well but in the end it's not personal.

And when I mock the Lakers, my ENTIRE goal is to amuse myself and possibly others. Sports should be fun, including joking at someone else's expense. Let's recognize that no matter what I say, the actual players can't hear me, so it's hardly a personal attack. It's just the fun of being in a fake tribe called Warriors fans. Let's root together and diss the opponent and in the end it's all just a game.

I dunno… it feels like we are a bit too focused on the Lakers. I hate them, I seethe remembering the BS calls, I want to see them lose, i love the anti-lakers posts individually, but just seems like there are too many… sorta like we have an inferiority complex or something.

It's just a CA rivalry thing no? We're supposed to root against the socal teams no matter what (Dodgers, Lakers, Rams even when they were in St. Louis)... and vice versa. I certainly don't remember Lakers fans holding back in the 12-13 years when we were in the cellar and they were winning championships.

Expand full comment

I have long had the impression it's mostly a one-way rivalry between the Bay Area and L.A. Although there certainly are cultural differences, most L.A. folks I know (and others from comments I've heard and read) don't feel as passionately either way about the Bay Area as Bay Area folks do about them. Of course the Dodgers/Giants rivalry goes way back to NY so that's more intense. But I doubt most Lakers fans care any more or less about the Warriors than other Western Conference fans do. I don't know how Clips fans feel about the Warriors; we competed with them years ago for who sucked worse, and in recent years when both teams were good. So maybe they feel stronger about it than I think they do.

Expand full comment

As someone born and raised in the City- now living in LA- I can assure you the feelings towards the Bay Area are mutual.

I have to admit, I don't know what it's like down in socal. But definitely living in the bay area (though I've been gone for almost a decade now), there were plenty of Laker fans around and so that's where my experience comes from.

Shhhh don't tell ANYONE but I used to be a Laker fan. Grew up in that family, what could I do? I switched a long time ago but I'm like a vengeful ex. who loves to see them flail.

And I really didn't like their offseason, it seemed even more mercenary than the usual NBA mercenary stuff because it was both mercenary and, in my best guess, doomed to fail. Trading all your young guys for really old guys is a Hail Mary of the most absurd type.

I have also had animus against LeBron for the Finals years -- he's a decent human being but he was the Opponent. And I've long, long argued that Carmelo is absurdly overrated, and that Russ and Howard are the same. These aren't original ideas, I understand, but it all adds up to them really being the most juicy target imaginable -- hubris meets aging stars meets poor performance. What's not to mock?

So I can't speak for others, but that's why I'm always on their case. I considered whether I have an inferiority complex but I am a GSW fan and we are the dynasty of the decade and the best team this year so I don't think that's quite the name for it. Obsession? Maybe.

Also I've always thought that sports phrase "... not named" is ridiculous and overused so I thought it was ripe time to unveil it. As in "... the best defender not named Draymond Green..." Preview: I plan on mocking the weird sports plural "Your Draymond Greens, your Steve Nashes..."

Expand full comment

You missed my biggest reason I take sick pleasure from this kind of talk: too many offseason predictions had the Warriors not improving from the previous year's results and the Lakers being title contenders. It took way too long for those takes to catch up with reality. It will take a correspondingly long time for clowning the Lakers to wear out its welcome to me.

The Westbrook hate I'm less comfortable with. While there are many differences, there's too much resemblance to the past Javale mockery for my taste.

So I saw that last Poole highlight dunk and Lowry trying to push him while Poole was at full speed. I hope Miami doesn’t get out of the 2nd round of the playoffs I take everything i said back about wanting them in the finals. As long as Lowry is on the team I’ll root for their demise

Expand full comment

Lowry is absolutely loved by many in the Warriors organization. I haven’t seen the replay but I can assure you he would never intentionally hurt a member of this team. His play might be frustrating to play against but he is not a dirty player. Danny Green?... well...

That’s an exaggeration. Poole had blown by him, but not up at full speed at all. It would have been a foul if Poole lose his balance, but he didn’t.

Expand full comment

How do we keep Poole long term?

Expand full comment

Attack the league and players' union for not making exceptions to salary cap for players drafted by a team. Both should be rewarding organizations that select and develop well.

Expand full comment

There are plenty of salary cap exceptions to sign your own guys, and they've increasingly made the incumbent team the one that can offer the most money.

It's just whether the team is willing to play repeater taxes.

Expand full comment

You are exactly right. For me, the issue is that the luxury tax itself penalizes teams that draft and develop well. Meant to protect small market teams, it fails in that respect. If you do draft well (say, OKC with KD, Westbrook and Harden), you ought to be able to pay them without incurring a heavy tax. OTOH, if you buy an established star (LeBron, AD), the full tax should apply.....

Expand full comment

Why won’t the Warriors be able to keep him. Won’t he be an RFA when his current deal is up?

Muscala you mean Porzingis? Conley aren't making it with his 14 ppg, Ja is a lock to me with Memphis being a top 4 seed. AD played 10 fewer games than Wiggins and Lakers suck. Dallas and Portland also sucks and don't deserve any all stars. It'll come down between Ayton or Wiggins if anything, also forgot KAT.

Yah Porzingis works. Conley made it last year w/ 16 ppg on worse efficiency 🤷‍♂️ good call on KAT, though he doesn't meet your criteria of not playing for a suck team.

Just here to celebrate. This is a fun team to root for.

I'm mostly a Warrior fan, but I'm enough of a Steph fan that I do feel a little down when he has a bad game. And this one had less to redeem it than most of his 'bad' games. Still, he got 10 assists and managed a +/- of 0, even after missing 14 shots. It definitely helps to see them win. But I'll be happy when he drops 40+ on them next time.
