A Serbian pox (my grandmother's) on the warriors for trading Jimmy Wise for that midget. He worked so hard! Just because Kerr can't coach ... They'll miss the playoffs, Nana guarantees it!

I don't know about the Chase Centre DJ, but I know I'll be playing Spandau Ballet's True to welcome GPII back. What else you got Dub Nation?

So I guess tomorrow, in a way, we might find out more about how our next 2+ seasons will go. I'm sure somebody will ask about GP2's health. And if GP2 can return to 95%, even in spurts, I'll call it a win. With his health being anything significantly less than that, then we're probably looking at a pretty big hurdle to overcome, right?

It's really refreshing to see the cordial discourse here now that things have finalized on the trade.

GSoM is not pretty right now.

One thing kinda lost in all the fracas is that I felt Portland made out kinda well. 5 second round picks and they get to take a look at Kevin Knox all to get off the next 2 plus years of having GP2 under contract of which everyone involved can admit now was probably a mistake by Portland signing him.

Let’s face it: the return on this trade for the Warriors is atrocious from a traditional value standpoint. 2nd pick turns into an injured 30 year old player with about 2 seasons of NBA experience.

But when we look at it more closely:

1) James Wiseman is a massive winner if Detroit makes him a starter the way they said. Detroit doesn’t need to worry about wins and Wiseman is free to explore his NBA game now.

2) GP2 could be the difference in the playoffs if the Warriors can get there. No player other than Curry made a bigger on court difference last year.

3) Adding a guy who wants to be here and subtracting one for whom being here was costing him $ on his next contract with every DNP is a massive bench realignment.

4) The move brings the roster into balance for the next two years. With vet, prime, and young guys.

5) Wiseman and Kuminga were brutal together and then never got to play together after that except for garbage time. More minutes for Kuminga should be a good thing in the youth movement.

6) Non-passing C is the lowest valued position in the game. Not having to worry about an Ayton type situation is a good reason to never draft a C in a position where they will expect a max. But failing that, trading them before that 2nd contract, is a net positive for the long term books.

7) The Warriors still have Steph Curry

I will be completely honest here.

I didn’t like the trade much when I thought we were getting a playable GP2 coming back. And I say “playable” because the GP2 I saw wearing a Blazers jersey was a shadow of what he was for us last year. I didn’t think he looked 100%, and it turns out he wasn’t. I thought the trade was a mistake we would come to regret someday and I said so on Trade Deadline day. Let’s say I was 60-65% negative on it.

Now, knowing that we are getting an injured player back who may not even heal up in time to play a single game at 100% health for us this year? And who was playing hurt on painkillers and did who knows what damage to his body because of it? And that we knew the risks and still went through with the trade?

Yeah, I’m not just calling this trade a mistake now. I’m calling it a bone-headed mistake born out of desperation now. And I went from being 60-65% negative to 90-95% negative on it.

Don’t get it twisted. I really hope I’m wrong about this trade, and that we make the Finals and win another title because GP2 somehow came back and became a part of our run to the title. I’m a Warriors fan (yes, even more than I am a Curry or Draymond or Kerr fan, because I will still be rooting for the Warriors long after they are gone), and I want the Warriors to win titles.

But again, I won’t lie about my feelings on this. I am scared to say the least about the health of GP2. To the point I don’t believe GP2 will come back to help us this year, and if he comes back he wont be at 100% or whatever % he needs to be to make the impact this year that he made last year. I don’t think this trade moves the needle positively as a win now move, because I don’t see how it solves the issues this team has had this year of lack of consistent effort, lack of chemistry, and lack of execution, especially from the veterans of the title winning core. And I doubt it moves the needle as a win later move, because I do strongly believe in James Wiseman, and I do firmly believe we will come to rue the day we traded him away, especially for a return like this.

In short, I really do hope this trade is what pushes us to a title, despite my honest feelings on it. Because if it doesn’t, not only will that mean that this season was a total failure, but it will inevitably trigger seismic changes in this franchise going forward. Lacob will pay 300+ million in tax for an NBA Finals team, especially if it wins the title. He ain’t paying that load of scratch for a team that gets knocked out in the second round (or worse, one who never even makes it that far).

So if the guys on that roster have a “switch” to turn on, they better turn it on now. If they are throwing a strop or crying a pity party about their minutes or who is and isn’t on the team, they better cut that shit out now, shut up, and give their all to the cause. Because if they don’t, they will almost certainly find their time here cut far shorter and ending far less pleasantly than they thought it would. And yes, that holds even for the guys who might one day see a statue of themselves outside the Chase Center one day.

Looking forward to seeing GP2 back on the team, whether it's celebrating with our guys or on the floor hounding opposing guards. We needed a personality like him back.

From Slater, https://theathletic.com/4186550/2023/02/12/warriors-lose-lakers-fourth-quarter/

“You saw they played on top of our shooters,” Kerr said. “So the paint was packed. There really wasn’t much space in there and we’re not a driving team. We’re not a team that’s built to get to the rim and to draw a lot of fouls. [...] You’ve got to make a bunch of 3s if you’re going to get outscored at the line and night after night.”

-----

We've struggled all season to get to the line even when Steph was playing. This feels like only part of the story.

Throughout the years, we've never really been great at "breaking the paint". And unfortunately for us, teams have just gotten really good at guarding the perimeter. Further, we've invested in a core that doesn't really have much in the way of dribble penetration and rim pressure. Wiggs helps a little bit with his post mismatches but other than Steph... we don't really have anyone else (maybe Ty? but I haven't seen a floater in a long while).

It's not surprising we don't have any other options because those types of players come at a premium. That's what I saw in the Wiseman and Kuminga picks: cheaper solutions. Obviously one hasn't worked out (for this timeline anyway) and the other is still a WIP in that regard.

I had no real greater point... just some thoughts.

This still feels so 20-21 season except we are starting that shortened bench run way earlier. Maybe we’ll be like the San Francisco Giants and win the chip
