I'll write this up for tomorrow, but some really good quotes in there, all centering on the discussion of how the Warriors can reload to get to the upper echelon again, and what that could look like in the near term
I can't believe the Lakers got Gasol for the minimum. People talk about the discounts players were taking to ring chase with us, but I think that was oversold. The best example I can think of was Zaza. Maybe David West. Nothing like the paycut that Gasol just took for a two year deal. Heck, Mathews probably took as big of a discount. Irritating.
The worst defenders are young enough that their playing time could be slashed or coached up to good defense. I'd love to add GR3 and add another average defender instead of a question mark. If you could get to a top 10 defense, Steph/scheming can probably create at least a lower top 10 offense. Get both of those and you're a title contender.
I'm fine with the signings and this season. This has the all the makings of a 7th or 8th seed and I'm fully at peace with that. I'd like us (realistically) to make it out relatively healthy, turnaround seasons for Draymond and Wiggins, good developmental year for Wiseman, and I hope Oubre can earn himself a massive payday (whether us or his next team)
I'm not too high on Mannion but he's here now and I hope the G league can help in his development. We'll hopefully have two solid 1st round picks. If we can somehow re-sign Oubre (assuming again he has a solid season), I really do think next year is the beginning of the end Window for one more deep playoff run with Steph, Stay, Klay, Wiseman, Wiggins, Oubre, Wiseman, and hopefully what will be an impact player with Minnys pick.
I'm just gonna enjoy this year as a stepping stone for next and not get too worked up on the forum on gameday
As much as I like JTA, the fact that he is from the bay area, his political organizing, etc. As much as I think having the only Mexican American player in the league is a bonus for GSW, GR3 is younger, more athletic and vastly more experienced. Plus he is so much stronger and more physical.
Does anyone think JTA can bang with LeBron for 30 minutes/night?
48 hours after it began, the free agent signing season is essentially over except for a few random minimum contracts and Davis's delayed signing with the Lakers.
Thankfully, Austin Rivers has signed with New York for 3 yrs / $10 million. I had almost been able to talk myself into being OK with it yesterday if he ended up a Warrior. [But I really wasn't.]
You guys sit here and tell me smailagic is a talent. Bell and mckinnie just got traded to the lakers. They have unguaranteed contracts and will be waived by tomorrow. Look at the players bob myers drafted how they get bounced around the league
HoopsHype reported Sunday that Bazemore turned down interest from eight other teams. The veteran wing reportedly drew interested from the Los Angeles Clippers, Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks, Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers and Charlotte Hornets. The Suns even had interest in giving Bazemore a two-year deal, sources told HoopsHype.
Bazemore is a great signing at the vet min. Last season he was a good defender and poor on offense, per BPM, RAPTOR, etc. playing somewhat above replacement player level for 24 minutes per game. He fits what we need (SF/SG, decent jump-shooting, good defense, wingspan), is a local favorite, and is familiar with the Steph+Dray (+Klay 😢) core of the team.
I'm pretty pleased with where the team's at after adding Baze, Oubre, and Wanamaker. We're still not an obvious title contender without Klay but after this it feels like we're back within spitting distance. And while there aren't a whole lot of teams that are obviously going to miss the playoffs in the West, I think a major (many weeks) injury to Steph is the only way we don't get there at a minimum.
Hoping we can keep Toscano-Anderson on the roster, at least on a 2-way. Not just because he's done so much for the community and all that, but I feel like he's just... a really reliable, smart player. Doesn't try to do too much, doesn't make big mistakes, just does what he does at a respectable level and makes smart plays. Even though he's probably pretty low on the rotation I feel like he could be a steadying presence on some units especially with all the youngsters this team has now.
At this point, it's really hard to tell who's redundant and what the team really needs. That'll also likely change as the season goes on, especially since we have no idea how this COVID-affected season is going to proceed. It's not out of the question that more key players miss significant time either due to quarantine protocols, personal reasons (sick family members), or load balancing (with the season being condensed). Plus, after a few games we'll have a much better handle on stuff like what shape Looney is in or how Wiseman adapts to the big league, or how the team fares at getting points when Steph is sitting.
So, whoever we sign with the DPE, if anyone, I think it's about as likely as not that they're a placeholder or a first step to a trade to adjust after we see how the roster plays for real.
Didn't realize we are using draft-and-stash Justinian Jessup and doesn't count as a roster spot. So we are at 17 roster spot. Who goes if we get GRIII or such?
6:57 p.m. ET: The New York Knicks traded C Ed Davis to the Minnesota Timberwolves for PF Omari Spellman, SG Jacob Evans, and a future second-round pick, sources tell ESPN.
Davis was traded to New York from the Utah Jazz earlier this week, while 2018 first-round picks Spellman and Evans were traded to Minnesota from Golden State in the Andrew Wiggins-D'Angelo Russell transaction in February 2020.
If the FO is still desperate enough to sign another Center, I'm all in on Baynes if he takes that 9.3 DPE (once available). I still think Baynes in this market is worth a multi year deal in the range of 10-12 mil a year BUT again if the market has dried up and he's still available, he'd be the perfect starter to let Wiseman use this season as Summer League/Extended Training Camp while at the same time being quick enough to allow this starting unit to run run run.
Breaking: Kent Bazemore Returning to GSW
Not saying he is the second coming, but..... Steph and Nico have the same birthdays. Red Curry confirmed.
really good article:

How many left-handers do the W's have now? It seems like most of new ones are lefties...

So it all comes down to defense:
Great Defenders
Dray
Quite Good Defenders
Looney
Bazemore
Wanamaker
Oubre
Average Defenders
Steph
Wiggins (with potential for more)
Chriss (with potential for more)
Need to be coached up but probably bad
Paschall
Poole
Wiseman
???
DLee
Mulder
JTA
Smiley
Mannion

So straight up question.
Who would you rather, JTA or GR3?

2 former Warriors on the move again per ESPN.
