Ever since stumbling onto Paul Millsap in 2008 while watching the Jazz and becoming a truther, I've developed a taste for identifying the under the radar NBA stars. There's something electrifying about finding the steal that most haven't realized and feeling the sweet song of victory when you're proven right.

While I've had my insane highs like calling Jokic a future All Star after his rookie year, I've also had my misses like Evan Fournier/Kylian Hayes. Still, I've gotten more hits than misses, and now I have a Hartenstein shaped hole in my heart. Hence, I gotta ask y'all, whose a under the radar role player who you believe would flourish with more minutes?

"According to Keith Smith of Spotrac, the Warriors are one of four teams to have worked out Nassir Little in recent days. Little, 24, spent last season with the Phoenix Suns, averaging 3.4 points and 1.7 rebounds across 45 games; he also shot 46% from the field and 30% from 3-point range. The other teams to work out the veteran forward are the Boston Celtics, Sacramento Kings and Miami Heat."

Wow, Loon looks like he lost at least 20 lbs.

Expand full comment

He was so skinny when he first came into the league that we probably overlooked his frame. For a modern 5, he's plenty big enough even at 220-225 with his width and length imo. I'm guessing he was closer to 250 last year.

Expand full comment

More importantly, his screens are still timely and bonecrushing, and he took and hit some middies, including one off a drive.

I dunno. He looked slow (even by Loon Standard Time) last year on defense. The reality is that if he can't guard smalls (by smart positioning and enough quickness to hang until the help comes), his value is significantly diminished, maybe to the point where he can't play in the NBA.

To me the shooting is a nice to have. As long as he can guard people, he can play in this league, even it's as a backup.

I look at it as a pretty significant development that he's trimmed down a bit.

But, yes, Loon putting the hurt on people with screens is one of my favorite Dubs things.

Love that dude. I want him to retire at 41 and write his memoir. That's one I would buy.

Agree with you, except I'd rather have a smart time machine. A stupid time machine would take you to the start of the 1999 season where the Warriors were about to go 57 - 189 over the next 3 seasons. That's 4th level of fandom hell.

Ahh ... the Vonteego Cummings/Mookie Blaylock/Danny Fortson/Marc Jackson era.

I'm not sure that was the nadir of my Dubs fandom experience (so many years to choose from!), but it's in the running.

And those were four of my least favorite Dubs of all time. The last two were really obnoxious. Vonteego's only real problem was he was another ridiculous Warriors pick. Blaylock was washed, the trade was a huge overpay, and as I recall, he had a drinking problem at the time (later on, he ended up killing someone driving when he had a DT seizure).

Sometimes one wonders if the Dubs management would have made better draft picks/trades if they'd just used a Ouija board to run the team.

Expand full comment

In fairness to Cummings there was only one player drafted after him that was a significantly better NBA player and that was Manu Ginobli at number 57. Talk about a steal.

Expand full comment

Looking at the board, you're right. I guess my dislike for him was unwarranted. I didn't remember he was drafted 26. Although some of the guys behind him had solid careers (more years).

As an aside, it's kind of astonishing how few of these guys I remember at all. Francisco Elson? 9 years, 472 games played. You'd think I'd remember something.

Expand full comment

At least Marc Jackson gave us the "unstoppable baby" meme. He actually had a pretty decent rookie season too.

Expand full comment

I remember the coach changing a practice time and mookie said no because he had a golfing game scheduled. It was an unfavorite tine

Expand full comment

LOL I don't remember that, but as bad as it sounds, can you blame him? If I had made plans around my work schedule, and then you want to reschedule the work event but it conflicts with my personal schedule, I would request that the work event remain as originally scheduled too.

Expand full comment

I mean... it's also the dot com bubble, so with my knowledge of the future, in a single week, I'd be able to micro trade my $1,000 into enough to buy the Warriors from Cohan, and then leverage my knowledge of the future of NBA basketball players to pick up players like Michael Redd, Tony Parker, Tayshaun Prince, and make some good trades, including ensuring that we'll have a top pick in the 2009 draft, so we can get Jonny Flynn.

Expand full comment

But now you've changed the future and anything can happen. So then your knowledge of the future is no longer valid because it has all changed, and the whole concept collapses. Darn, and it sounded so good over a few beers and tokes!

He said that he thinks that the nba gleague is the 2nd best league in the world, while playing for “the g league unite” before a FIBA intercontinental cup game which rubbed some people the wrong way. His team was losing, so he gave a halftime speech which some people perceived as showing a lack of respect for EuroLeague teams/players.

The exact quote is “Every single one of n*gga we all are better than this sh*t! Our dream is not to play f*cking ACB, our dream is not to play f*cking EuroLeague! Our dream is to play in the National Basketball Association, n*gga, to make millions and hundreds of millions dollars.” -JTA

It's a motivational half-time speech, not a press statement. I, for one, am unfamiliar with conventions around the vernacular used during such speeches, and can't judge if the tone is out of the ordinary. It does seem a bit over the top, but maybe not shockingly so.

I think the best motivational speeches to hype up your team, have a certain level of respect for your opponent, that this speech lacked(especially in the context that they were already significantly losing).

I think great leadership is raising your team’s level of play rather than downplaying your opponents.

This is something that he would get disciplined for if he was contracted to play in the NBA. And dropping the N word is just unnecessary. And JTA....you're not going to ever make "millions and hundreds of millions of dollars" playing in the NBA. Maybe don't burn bridges for opportunities in other leagues.

I was amazed at that quote from JTA. As you surely are aware, the N word is common parlance in the league among some black players. I view Plowden as a lottery ticket, though with considerably better odds than an actual lottery ticket. The Warriors won't know if he has improved enough to be an NBA player until he gets into some NBA games but all it costs them is a few hundred thousand to find out.

Expand full comment

Hield and Waters make Plowden unnecessary and unlikely to get any time. Even Santos stands before him. The Warriors need a 7 footer, not another 3 point specialist...

Expand full comment

We have a lot of wings, but not necessarily a lot of 2-way wings.

I suspect the Dubs see an opportunity to find a 2-way guy cheap. For instance, if he displaces Hield in the second unit, then Hield may be the one to go.

Expand full comment

I hate that they named the 2-way guys (contractually speaking) the same term used to describe guys who can play both ends lol. It gets confusing sometimes.

We need a 2-way guy that we can get on a 2-way contract lol.

Expand full comment

It really does feel like they got all these ~$10M contracts so they can trade them... Melton, Anderson, Hield... all very tradeable at the deadline, and all can be mix 'n matched with anyone else on the roster. We've got 5 guys making a combined $50M that can be used individually or together with any other trade assets to make salary work...

Expand full comment

IDK. Not a big Hield fan but his can be instant offense coming of the bench.

Melton is super solid backup point and an excellent POA defender. If he stays healthy, Kerr will have a tough time keeping him out of the lineup.

Anderson is a perfect fit and an insurance plan if Draymond is out. 1-5 defensively and a very under rated passer. Played point at UCLA, 6-8 or 6-9 with 7-3 reach. Physical enough to match up with Luka or bang with the 4-5s. Plus, he can be our 2nd team scoring threat.

His 3 pt shot is questionable but otherwise I think he is a steal.

Expand full comment

I'm not sold that Melton is going to be healthy. Back injuries are tricky and that is the reason the Warriors could sign him relatively cheaply.

Expand full comment

On the other hand the GSW medical team has done a pretty good job with Draymond so far.

Expand full comment

Well, there is certainly a risk but it also is worth saying that if/when healthy, he is a $25 million/year talent.

Expand full comment

Oh yeah, all of them are individually useful, which makes each one keepable too. They're not tied to trying to convince someone to take on Hield or Melton or Anderson, they can see what's available on the trade market and have a lot of flexibility to offer Hield, or Melton, or Anderson, or Looney, or GP2 to go along with picks and youngsters.

Expand full comment

1. Unless he stands out as a better defender, cutter, and finisher than either and while actually continuing to hitting 3s at 40%+... then he'll absolutely carve out a role over those two. I'm not betting on it... but there's a reason he was given a contract.

2. The Warriors did indeed draft a 7 footer that needs a contract of some sort... that's probably one reason Atlanta has called dibs on Plowden, foreseeing that the Warriors may give his 2-way to Post.

Expand full comment

Good luck sorting out all the wings in camp. There is going to be some serious competition and the end results may be surprising.

Plowden is a guy who has gotten better year by year starting in college. He is without a doubt an NBA level excellent athlete. He has a good attitude. He is cheap.

He has a legit shot in more ways than one.

Expand full comment

I think the right comp for Plowden in many ways is JTA. A 3-and-D guy with lots of energy who is great when the 3 pointer falls, could be a surprising contributor off the deep end of the bench and of course blossoms late. Plowden looks to be a better athlete and probably has a high ceiling but IDK if his basketball IQ is comparable and we haven't seen him as a point-forward.

I don't have any expectations that his story will be a engaging as a local boy made good or that he will be a as beloved by the fans but it is a good way to look at his upside/ceiling.

Expand full comment
Sep 16·edited Sep 16

JTA was “D and next to no 3” (career .329 on 2.9 attempts per 36), where Plowden’s best skill may be his three-ball. That’s a pretty notable difference.

As you allude to, JTA also has “poor man’s Draymond” secondary playmaking skills (career 4.3 assists per 36) which I’m not sure Plowden does.

Very different players, imo. But if the three-ball Plowden has flashed recently and in summer league is real, it may be hard to keep him off the floor (given his toughness, size, athleticism, and D).

In a 92-attempt sample. And then (with all due love to our guy Juanito) he regressed to the naturally poor shooter he is. He’s a .649 career FT shooter who shot .316 from the three in the G-league. In his four seasons at Marquette he shot .289 from 3 and .593 from the stripe.

Just not a shooter, for his other strengths. If he were, he’d almost certainly still be in the NBA.

And then there’s this from Hoops Rumors on Sept. 9: “the Hawks’ G League club, the College Park Skyhawks … acquired Daeqwon Plowden‘s returning rights. … Plowden signed a two-way deal with the Warriors this season. Atlanta won’t be able to use those returning rights unless he’s waived by Golden State. It’s possibly a sign that the Warriors don’t plan to retain Plowden.” I get it, but it’s also kind of weird that this G League team has dibs on Plowden if GS waives him.

Expand full comment
Sep 16·edited Sep 16

I can see why the rules are written that way.

Otherwise some team could cherry-pick a player out of another team's G-league team, sign him to a non-guaranteed 2-way contract for a month, and then cut him and sign him to a G-league contract with THEIR G-league team.

Seems like it is basically a way to keep some team from just scooping up all the higher end G-league prospects for their G-league team. Or just churning players around the G-league

It is ominous, but I don’t think ATL has special insight into GSW’s plans. ATL actually dealt away another player plus a 2nd round G-League draft pick, so they are betting an asset that Plowden might come back to the G-League. If GSW doesn’t keep Plowden, I’d think he has a shot at a two-way somewhere else.

Also, to be clear, ORL previously had Plowden’s G-rights, so it’s not like GSW traded them away.
