If at the beginning of the season, you had told me the Ws would win 50, I would have been thrilled. Then at the halfway mark, it looked like they might win 60. So the last half of the season felt disappointing. It's totally understandable, given all of the injuries. But it was a bummer.

But objectively, what do I think of their winning 50? I think it's great. But I'll be thrilled if they can catch fire in the playoffs. Win or lose, I just want to see them show out.

Since the Utah game, I’ve been thinking about Rudy Gobert. How is a guy that is such a liability on defense a three time defensive player of the year? In the modern NBA, it feels like it should be a pre-requisite to enter the DPOY contest that you can actually contest a three point shot without getting smoked.

It's disgusting to me that he's probably going to be remembered as a better defensive player than Draymond thanks to all those awards

Expand full comment

I'm not so convinced he will? Draymond will get brought up in the context of being a key player in the dynasty that won at least 3 championships; Gobert will be remembered as a guy who won a fair number of DPOY awards but—at least so far—didn't have playoff success. I don't think people looking back will be so oblivious as to discount the hard proof of Draymond's impact on *winning*.

He’s really a great defensive force. Three time DPOY is a massive overreach that makes people (myself included) underrate him as a result.

Layups are still the most efficient shot in basketball, and Gobert really effectively deters those. He also has gotten a little better at defending the perimeter, to the point where he can adequately contest some NBA players' 3-pt shots; it's only the really fast, accurate shooters who give him trouble (y'know, the kind we didn't have last year but added this year). So as far as the regular season goes, Gobert saves you a ton of points in the paint.

DPOY is a regular season award. Defensive player of the playoffs is different.

FWIW, I'd vote Bridges for DPOY this year (would probably be Draymond if he played like 10 more games)

On a night where the 50-win Warriors clinch homecourt in the first round, Isiah lumps them in with the Lakers and Nets as teams struggling to make the play-in.

While ballwashing the mighty Spurs and their budding superstar Dante Murray.

Weatherspoon is 3 for 14 from the field, Chiozza 3 for 10, Moody 4 for 12. Rough night for all of them so far as the South Bay Lakers are blowing them out.

Mawugbe looks good though.

EDIT: And so does Jerome Robinson.

Sea Dubs got it down to 6 but it’s not gonna happen.

And Moody was probably one of the biggest reasons why, unfortunately (Chiozza too). Looked more lost defensively than I've seen him in awhile, and was building a brick house on offense.

Although I will say, South Bay seems very good.

South Bay did look very good. Our guys had spunk that showed up many times, but you could tell the Lakers were the better team throughout.

Importantly, he also said he’s happy with his role on the team and he loves the Bay Area (going on hikes in nature and stuff).

Sure, players often say neutral things to not burn bridges and leave all doors open, but he sounded extra-ok with being a Warrior. It’s a far cry from Oubre, who made it clear he wasn’t coming back.

lol, Isiah Thomas gives credit for the Spurs' win to "Dante Murray" — presumably meaning DeJounte, who has been out the last three games.

Also called him an "up and coming superstar" despite the fact that he was drafted in 2016.

Jazz beat the Grizzlies 121-115 in overtime

They are clearly better than the Nuggets imo

Expand full comment

Both the Jazz and the Nuggets have some advantage over the Warriors in the following categories:

-Turnovers

-Rebounds

-Shooting %age, mostly the two point %age. Denver is #1 in two point %age (57.4%), Jazz is #2 (56.8%), Warriors are #3 (55.7%), Suns are #4 (55.3%), and Mavericks are #5 (54.7%).

I'm betting money on the nuggets if they face in the playoffs

Jazz up 119-113 with 51 seconds left to go.

Woo Hoo! Now we can slip comfortably into that 4th spot

Expand full comment

A combination of three Warriors wins and/or Mavericks losses means that the Warriors keep the #3 spot. But the Mavericks have an easier schedule than the Dubs (@ Pistons, vs. Blazers, vs. Spurs), so there's a higher chance that the Mavs may end up at the #3 spot than the Warriors.

Lol Westbrook is playing well enough down the stretch that the Lakers may go ahead and convince themselves he's worth keeping around for next season after all!

He is. They just need to give them time to mesh. Don't quit now...

Doubt that they could get rid of him if they tried. $47 million for next year with player option.

Maybe a rebuilding team who wants the expiring could be enticed with a packaged first round pick? But then again if the lakers consider themselves in rebuild mode…

The Lakers are a bit short on picks. Seems like they’re stuck with Westbrick.

Moody with 11 points at the half, but left three points at the free throw line. Looked more up to his G-League standard in the second quarter but I think he can still play better in the second half.

Jazz playing horribly in the clutch. 4 point lead with 35 seconds to go - give up a 3, get a stop, and then Mitchell misses 1 of 2 FTs. Grizz miss 3 pointer to win but score on an offensive rebound as time expires.
