Prepare yourselves for the Boozer twins. And they've committed to Duke just like Dad.

#Dixon. Give me the burly power forward from Villanova who will barrel his way to the basket AND have all of the commenters on here saying how Draymond needs to be traded cause the Warriors just drafted his replacement. Ahh fun times.

My number 1 attribute in a prospect is can they shoot? And all these guys can shoot, although FT% suggests Tonje is the best. And my next couple are age, size, rebounding scaled for position, BPM, USG% and team winning. Tonje seems to pass every test (except age). 8.8 FTA per 40 as a 3P shooter? 6.8 rebounds per 40 as a guard? A great performance in the tournament.

For #41? That's a great pick. #Tonje.

I have to vent a little. I’m going through NBA Combine footage. Everyone making this ESPN show clearly has contempt for the actual combine scrimmages and the work those players are putting in and how much drama there is for those young men. Completely skipping 5 game minutes of a scrimmage to interview Cooper Flagg??? The announcers ramble endlessly and there is no play by play. You just have to guess who passed and scored and look it up on your handy lineup reference.

It’s so enraging and disrespectful. Take this away from ESPN and let someone who actually cares about the Combine broadcast this. 🤬

I wonder how much work it would be to do an alternate broadcast next year… grab the video and re-release it with only the court noise and each time an event happens, put up a graphic about which players were involved.

I wish I had time to dig up interview footage for each of the various candidates. I tend to fall in love with prospects with, for lack of a better word, “presence”.

#Lanier. His quick release and balance on the move and in the air remind me of Nesmith, who I've been wishing were a Dub throughout these finals. Granted Lanier's highlights show no sign of Nesmith's D or playmaking, so it'd definitely be a big gamble. Tonje looked solid all around, yet slow enough that I don't see his stuff translating to NBA speed. Similarly, Brea's game reminded me of a slower Klay with good shooting but not enough quickness to generate space. Shulga's skilled, nice passer, but kinda a bargain-basement Podz; I don't see a need he fills. Forgot Dixon: crafty, but looked off balance a lot, I think he would struggle against NBA size.

In your first chart... do you have the 3ptA / 3ptM and FTA /FTM numbers reversed?

The numbers A are lower than the numbers M.

Yes, the column names got reversed, sorry.

Not difficult to figure it out... especially with the %s.

#TONJE Can shoot, can get to the rack with either hand, has a rep as a good defender (which is not true of Dixon and Brea). The broadcaster said he knows how to get to the line too. Maybe not the tightest handle, but not bad. Seems athletic enough. Not sure about his passing, though he made a few good ones in the highlights (the give-and-go for instance). Overall he could be a solid 2-way SG who can knock it down.

OT: The more I see some of the highlights, the more they irritate me. The Brea highlights are a good example. Why do we need 17 minutes of mostly 3-pointers? Once we've seen his shot three or four times, we know what we need to know about that, so show us other parts of his game and stop at 5 minutes. Grumble, gripe, growl.

So, here's a weird question. Are there any NBA stats that attempt to capture BBIQ?

I've never heard of any attempt to systematically grade guys on this.

I imagine the draft combine has something to try to find those guys who can adapt quickly, but not sure of it.

I don’t know if there is a stat but I know the Warriors do a film session when they work out candidates (or they do it sometimes). It’s how they were really impressed by Podz. He was amazing in the workout but was apparently also amazing at the film session. I’m guessing both those things combined can give a good sense of BBIQ?

From the Athletic article:

“The Warriors then brought him into the film room and had him break down two games of tape. They don’t often learn much in these sessions. Podziemski was different. They slowed down some of his pick-and-roll decision-making against Gonzaga and defensive possessions.

“He could reference personnel on the other team,” Lacob said. “Names, tendencies, opponent actions. His memory recall was super impressive.”

No direct stats. Some try to infer through REB rate, STL rate, AST/TOV, STOCKS/FOUL.

I think people would have a hard time agreeing exactly what it is and how to measure it. But it would be interesting to try to come up some kind of on-court test.

TwoRingTest's avatar

Yeah, it's definitely something that would lend itself to a test in a more controlled environment, like the combine.

But, even then, any Kobayashi Maru-style simulation would be subject to cheating (first guy tells a subsequent guy what to expect).

Expand full comment
AttilaTheHun's avatar

Ah but the thing about Kobayashi Maru was that it is a no-win scenario no matter what you do. Everybody dies regardless; knowing what's coming makes no difference. Kirk beat it by reprogramming the test (cheating) so that it could be won.

Cheating = original thinking, at least in Kirk's case.

Expand full comment
AttilaTheHun's avatar

Yep, that's why they passed him anyway. The point of the test was to see how a potential commanding officer handled an impossible scenario. Thinking creatively and refusing to lose got it done for Kirk. Steph would do that! 😊

Only one I can think of that kind of does this is Ben Taylor’s passer rating. But he doesn’t do college I believe.

#TONJE mostly because he seems like his game isn't as limited by lack of athleticism as the others. And, his big frame makes me think he could develop into a big-wing defender.

Glad I'm not an NBA scout, though. This group has me feeling like I could have picked by throwing a dart at a dartboard and been as likely to find the guy who will be the best player in three years.

Man I like all this shooting...but the deciding factor was his "toughness and physicality" notation in the Cliff Notes.

Going with Tonje. We have had good luck with older rookies and if we cannot trust Clunky Comps, who can we trust?

Also, I have a lot of faith in our defensive development. As long as Tonje is motivated (and his longish college career speaks to his toughness) I am willing to bet Stackhouse, Draymond, & Jimmy can make him serviceable in defense.
