[Stein] All signs point towards Al Horford eventually signing with the Golden State Warriors. Sunday is the first day of the 2025-26 League Year, when teams can make signings official.

All signs, for the record, continue to point to Al Horford landing with Golden State … eventually. Sunday will be the first day of the 2025-26 salary cap year that NBA teams can make most free agent signings and trades official.

I don't mean this very negatively, but I'm a little surprised at the hand-wringing here that the Dubs haven't made their move (if they make one) so far.

Dunleavy got Butler on a very reasonable deal by waiting, and not going after bad deals (Markkanen). He got Toohey and Richards by waiting (trading down) ... jury's still out on whether that's going to be successful, but it's certainly not an obvious mistake.

To me, the fact that he hasn't lunged at any of the rumored trades is a huge positive. Having the patience to wait things out until you get a transaction that actually improves the team is a skill, and an important part of a GMs job.

We have the counter-example of the Kings to look at. They tweak, tweak, tweak, because they have an impatient owner. It's fairly debatable whether they are any better (they could have had Doncic, and did have Hali).

I think we need to wait for the paint to dry a bit before we start worrying about the results of this offseason.

I agree. I think it's mostly just that the Finals are over, the draft is over, free agency is happening, and we don't have basketball to watch or anything substantial to talk about. It's all about JK and tax aprons and wild guesses about who we might be able to sign or trade for.

Fortunately, summer league will start Saturday, and we'll have basketball to watch, even if it's sloppy basketball. We'll get our first look at a few of our rookies.

@johnhollinger.bsky.social‬ Hollinger’s response to the Slater article is: [[ Wizards angle is fascinating. Warriors could get back the top-20 protected 2030 pick, which isn't that valuable but massively cramps their style due to Stepien rule, and a good cheap role player in Justin Champagnie. But what else are Wiz putting in? Don't think Ws cap can handle Olynyk or Kispert. ]]

Still a pretty bad trade. I don't think they're interested in trading post Steph picks anyway unless it's for a superstar

Not crazy, it's debatable. One thing I have noticed with Murray is his 3-pt % has trended downward since his rookie year. If he could reverse that, I'd feel pretty good getting him.

Has the quality of his shot opportunities also trended down though? His rookie year the Kings offense was deadly, wasn’t it. Since then, it’s been much muddier.

JK is coming back and the team has half a season to either up his trade value or make the situation work.

That's my guess how the situation plays out. Dubs can give him the most money and a trade later is better for both parties.

Also, have you all been in frustrating situations but once the decision is made you just feel better? JK might not get the 120 million contact he wants but he's making at least 80 million over four years.

He can't seriously be upset at the end of the day for making 80 million.

Expand full comment
AttilaTheHun's avatar

Wait, where did you see that he's making at least $80M? The last I heard he has zero offers above the $7.9M QO and the rest is mere media speculation, which could mean something or nothing.

Expand full comment
Klaymatic37's avatar

I'm just making a total guess. 4 year contracts seem typical for players in his position.

Young players with potential are usually not given the absolute minimum, so 20 million seems like a reasonable floor.

Just making a prediction that it's better for the dubs and JK to work together beyond this summer.

I'd love to see JK stay a warrior but I just defer to MDJ to make the best call at this point.

I think he means JK will earn minimum $20M/yr (seems to be the consensus). Not sure where the 4 years comes from.

AttilaTheHun's avatar

Ah, yes, that number certainly has been tossed around a lot here at DNHQ, including by me. And it may be so. We hadn't discussed length of contract that I can recall. But we're all guessing without knowing what (if anything) is really going on behind the scenes.

From slater’s (short) update/article, sounds like Kuminga may have meetings with prospective teams and with Dunleavey+Kerr at summer league if the situation isn’t resolved before then.

They're all finding out that:

1. Kuminga isn't getting $30M

2. There are no teams rushing to get him in the building

All the GMs knocking on the door are looking for a good deal. Just like Dunleavy was last year knocking on Pat Riley's door. This Kuminga situation will take time.

Jaxson Hayes has an implicit no-trade clause after his new contract with the Lakers

Article

It's Hayes's third consecutive one-year deal that he has signed with the Lakers, which has triggered a very interesting clause in the new contract for the veteran.

Since it is the third consecutive one-year deal that Hayes has signed with the same team, the NBA's collective bargaining agreement stipulates that Hayes receive a full no-trade clause in his new contract

Expand full comment
AttilaTheHun's avatar

That IS interesting. I've never heard of that rule. Since it's a one-year deal for $2,874,436 (per Spotrac), it's not as big deal to give him the NTC as it was with Beal.

Ty's avatar

Fingers crossed that the Hayes NTC brings down the Lakers, just like the Beal NTC brought down the Suns

Expand full comment
AttilaTheHun's avatar

The Lakers should have no concerns. As I noted, Hayes is on a one-year deal on a $2.87M contract. That's very different than Beal's 5-year, $251M deal with NTC.

A ton of info just got dumped by Siegel. The article itself mostly focuses on JK: https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/siegels-scoop-warriors-jonathan-kuminga-free-agency-holdup-trade-market-intel

Some snippets:

*"It doesn't appear as if everything has hit rock bottom in the sense that Kuminga truly wants to leave and won't return to the team by any means....[He] has shown flashes of star-like potential. If there is a path to [becoming one] with the Warriors, Kuminga would very much welcome that opportunity."

*"Golden State isn't prepared to let him leave and not get anything of value in return, sources said."

*The three teams currently realistic for a JK S&T are Miami, NOP, and SAC. Miami wants to clear salary first - likely Wiggins or Rozier, but neither for JK. NOP is looking to clear salary - probably by trading DeJounte Murray (who is injured). The Dubs would have serious interest in Herb or Trey, but NOP is unlikely to include them. SAC is trying to move Monk to make JK work, but the only real interest GS had mentioned is if Keegan is included. "That doesn't seem to be a path for the Kings at this moment."

*Some Dubs FO members want to retain JK in case Giannis or Lebron is possible at a later date.

*Horford is still likely to sign, but....."Another holdup with Horford could revolve around how much money Golden State is offering him. The Warriors have access to the $5.7 million taxpayer mid-level exception, but they will be hard-capped at the second apron if they were to use it on a player like Horford or someone else."

On Lillard:

*He has relationships with Curry, Draymond, and Butler. And "it's certainly worth discussing."

On Melton:

*"De'Anthony Melton has been a key name linked to Los Angeles throughout the offseason, and there is a growing expectation that the Lakers will land him in free agency"

On Beal:

*"The Heat, Lakers, Clippers, Warriors, and Bucks would all have interest in a small contract for Beal."
