Interesting Stats

5-man combination with Curry and 3 guard lineups.

4 of the top 10 most used are 3 guard lineups, including Hield/Payton. (Although you can and I will argue that GP2 is a Centaur, half guard/half power forward).

These 4 (3 guard) lineups are 1,2,3,4 in Points per 100 possessions in this group of 10 by a WIDE MARGIN.

In all cases, Hield and GP2 are tied at the hip because Steve has to have a POA defender on the floor (with Curry/Hield). Thus, this group eats into small forward minutes, takes food off of Moody's plate and pushes Wiggs to the 4 and takes food off of JK's plate.

But it is cashing out in points per 100 which is why we will continue to see it, despite Hield playing pin the tail on the donkey with a basketball.

Another interesting 5-man stat. The 5th MOST USED group is Curry-Wiggs-JK-Dray-TJD. This was Steve's starting lineup the 1st 3 games. I thought it was a terrible idea and, apparently, after 3 days, so did Steve, since we haven't seen that group since. This goes to show how badly our lineups are in need of some continuity. We are 47 games in and this 5-man group was only on the court together for the 1st 3 games AND IT IS STILL #5 in most used (minutes) for 5-man combinations.

Sorry, but our lineups are what I would call a hot mess. Schroder has taken 20+ games to start looking decent. Is adding anyone at this point of the season going to do anything?

If anyone has kids, ever have that moment when your house is an absolute horrifying mess, and a colleague or friend call and says they are dropping by for some reason in about 5 minutes, and there is no way you can put your house in order in time? That's how I feel. Our house is not in order and, although I would be happy to see a new face, I am not going to have any expectation that they are going to roll up their sleeves and start cleaning our house. I feel for Schroder.

If anyone could play for two teams at once, it might be him. (But actually, I’m pretty sure the league said he would play for the All-Stars in that scenario.)

I'd watch the game if they were going to play a serious, competitive game with hard-nosed defense. Otherwise, I'm not interested no matter what gimmicks the NBA comes up with.

I (and likely many of us here) was out on Kerr when he was playing Ty and lamb at the expense of JK and Moody!

l think we (self and DNHQ) are partly validated as Anthony lamb will likely turn out to be Kerrs worst pet-player - but i was definitely wrong bout Ty Jerome - he is very good - and Kerr was on to something!

Expand full comment

As far as I was concerned, Ty and Lamb were two separate issues. I liked Ty a lot and he was a very solid backup PG who really took charge of the offense.

Lamb was the o e taking minutes from the young guys.

Did Lamb turn out to be bad or did his off court issues make him untouchable?

he ended up playing in some league in Australia last I heard - so maybe a combination of both issues

In retrospect, Ty really wasn't stealing minutes since he is a backup PG (despite what BR says). Even I had Moody wrongly pegged as a 2G. But it was a bad look for sure.

I met him the 1st day he came to SAN ANTONIO after the SECRETARY OF THE NAVY released him after only 2 years of his 5 year obligation, as I, too, was on assignment in SAN ANTONIO. BIG DIFFERENCE IN THEIR DEVELOPMENT. DAVID had 4 YEARS OF COLLEGE under his belt and played for NAVY teams while in the SERVICE. Your EXPECTATIONS were totally unreasonable. Not alone, however, as there were many others. WISEMAN was a PROJECT; practically straight out of High School AND GOT HURT TRYING TO LIVE UP TO THEM TOO FAST. He needed several years to get there, though he exhibited superb skill sets for his experience and age.

>>>The San Antonio Spurs have registered interest in both Darius Garland and LaMelo Ball during previous transaction cycles, sources tell Jake Fischer. San Antonio is now linked to De'Aaron Fox, who has identified them as his preferred destination.

The Spurs called the Cleveland Cavaliers last June on Garland when they still owned the No. 4 and No. 8 pick in the draft. The Cavaliers did not reciprocate much interest in discussing a Garland trade at that time.

The Charlotte Hornets similarly never invited trade inquiries on Ball, who is having a bounce back 24-25 season.<<<

I'm entertained. I'll be more entertained when this game is released on League Pass in 2 more days.

Expand full comment

Is San Antonio buying into the Fox/Wemby tandem? It's sounds intriguing to me.

Expand full comment

I'm okay with LaVine, but I only see him as a trade out with Wiggs at the 3. Better offense, yes. Defense? No. So how much better is the offense vs how much worse is the defense and is it worth and extra 14m a year? As good as he is, this move does seem like a sideways move, like changing lanes on the freeway in rush hour traffic. LaVine won't fix the back court issue (defense). Not saying it wouldn't be entertaining.

Expand full comment

Nooooooo trading Wiggs!

I’m on board with acquiring LaVine — for Dray, Schröder, and Hield. And then maybe haggle over a pick.

Expand full comment

That's a big salary to take on though. Maybe worth it but if we're trading three players for him, we have to have money in the till to fill those salary slots. LaVine is under contract for next season at $46M and then has a player option the season after at $49M, so there's also the possibility that he'd be a 1.5-year rental and then be priced out of our reach.

Expand full comment

No trading Dray, he still needs to train Post.

Expand full comment

maybe add slomo to sweeten that deal - I agree - not Wiggs

Expand full comment

Yes... Dray, Schröder, and Hield is very nice for us, but a lot of salary that Chicago has to keep on the books for next year. But maybe that's a feature for a tank job next year to have expiring contracts they could trade?

Expand full comment

> Yes... Dray, Schröder, and Hield is very nice for us

Swapping Green for LaVine seems horrible for the Warriors imo

Expand full comment

You’d be swapping Schröder and Hield for LaVine, and Dray for some combo of SloMo/Loon/Podz/Kuminga/Moody/Santos/Post.

We’re not talking about peak Dray. We’re talking about 35 y.o. Dray who has lost a bit on D, is putting up .530 TS, and may be starting to break down physically.

Expand full comment

Wow. That’s a tough one. What’s his 3pt% again?

He’s still clearly our best center - 20 minutes a game. Tough.

I’d love a starting lineup that included Curry, ZL, Wiggs, and JK. What firepower. But I don’t see the Dubs parting with another of the big 3 - not without his explicit approval. Maybe find a 3 way deal that gets Dray to LA or Detroit?

6dEdited

That seems to me like the Warriors giving up Draymond Green as a player, and recognized team leader (and therefore his wealth of basketball knowledge). .. for nothing except the salary consideration ?

I think he is still way too valuable to this team, even if only as an elder statesman part time player.

Expand full comment

In case you missed it, that “team leader” trophy is a bit tarnished after the punch and all the bullshit he put the team through last year.

Expand full comment

They’d be getting LaVine in the proposed deal.

If your primary goal is a 1A/1B scorer with Steph (as that Kerr comment suggests, but who knows?) you’re not going to do any better.

Expand full comment

He used to be a great two way player. Now he’s a good mostly one way player that’s injured a bit too often (due to being undersized for his position)… I’m with the Bill Walsh mentality here: trade him a year early instead of a year late

Expand full comment

I'm not into it either. As underwhelming as Wiggs can be sometimes, his underwhelming is still really really good. And, could we just say screw it, keep Wiggs, play LaVine at the 2 and just forget about defense in the back court?

Steph-LaVine-Wiggs-JK-Dray?

I mean, whoa! I don't even know how to wrap my mitts around that. But if I am an opposing coach, I wouldn't be happy.

How are you matching salary while keeping Wiggs and Dray?

Dennis, GPII, SloMo, Buddy, Loon, and Waters (basically everyone but JK, Moody, Podz, TJD, and Gui). Get some min contracts back from either Chicago or a 3rd team, sign Post and Spencer to real contracts (no matter how short).

It's possible in theory.

Expand full comment

Tell us why Chicago does that and how you fill those roster spots and stay under the 1st tax apron. They have to have roster spots to accept all those players, so they have to send us some players, and that has to be factored into the salary matches.

You’d have to get 5 minimums back.

Taking my Dubs hat off (or putting it on, depending on my mood), Draymond moving to the Pistons would be a really cool NBA story. Dray returns home to Michigan, to the tough rebuilding city of Detroit. He joins a young Pistons team that is arriving earlier than expected. He brings the veteran leadership, the high level IQ, the crazy-Dray that can short-circuit the brains of some guys in Boston. It would change the landscape of the Eastern Conference as the Pistons, with Draymond, would get a seat at the big boys table with Bos, Mil, & NYK.

At this stage in his career, what is in his head may be as valuable as what is left in his body. For the NBA as a whole, what sounds better. Draymond declining year after year until he can't tie his shoes any longer. Or a hero's welcome home, the veteran returns to help elevate the careers of the next generation of NBA stars.

There is no one like Dray and I could argue keeping him and moving him equally for days without end. But as an NBA fan, and a Draymond fan, doing something special with Cade & company would be a great cherry on the milkshake for his career.

I don’t see him enjoying being the old guy on a rebuilding team. He has a bit of a track record of quitting on the Warriors when Curry’s out.

Have we litigated the whole "dunker's off hand touches defender's hand" thing? On GP2's dunk, he basically high fives Hartenstein with his off hand, and Hartenstein couldn't get his hands up effectively to attempt a block. Kinda feels like that could be an offensive foul, but it happens so much. Seems like they call it very subjectively and don't call a foul if they determine the contact to be "marginal", whatever that means...

The rules for what the offensive player can do basically go out the window on a dunk attempt. It’s always been that way that I can recall. Especially with a smaller player over a larger player.
