Happy New Year to all of DNHQ!!

from 2 old curmudgeons [Dill & I] and the 2-timeline kittens [Molly & Boots and Smokie, Opie & Bess]. I yell silently during games now, so I don't wake the young'uns and type one-handed as needed with the little guys on my lap. Left at the moment because Opie is asleep across my right arm - but they are starting to nap on a blanket near my feet.

Ws move to a modest 4.5 games out of first place in the West if the Celtics beat the Nuggets tonight.

Closing lineups.

In: Curry, Klay, Wiggs. I can't foresee any closing lineup without these three.

Either/Or or both: Dray, Loon

Small ball offense, free throw shooting: Poole.

Ball handling, defense, matchup / X-factor: Andre, JK, DDV

That is 9 guys who I could see Kerr playing/juggling to close out a game. I can't think of another team that has the flexibility to mix and match the last 5 minutes of a game. You can put together very interesting 5s. All defense, all shooting, big, small, you name it. I would go so far as to say there could be an offensive set you insert Wiseman in. This could get real fun.

Great summary at the end of a great year in Dubsland. Thank you Daniel, Eric, DDD and the whole DNHQ crew for making 2022 even more fun. And creating community at the same time. Impressive stuff.

Since I'm such a GP2 fanboy, I have to comment on Blazer fans starting to think he's superfluous. Bros ... you are wrong. GP2 is an amazing impact player and is going to have a big effect on the Trailblazers ability to beat teams with good offenses. Though I have to admit I'm a bit afraid that there's a real risk that the Portland coaching staff doesn't use him well and put him in the position to impact winning on both sides of the ball. Ah well ... if they botch it, we'll always take him back! LOL how about Portland buys him out and we get him on a minimum contract ;).

Chron writer CL dropped the "when should Poole be a full-time starter?" article and intimated that it may be sooner rather than later, if the Warriors are to capitalize on Poole's performance. I have to disagree. And I have 123 Million reasons why. Question? Do we think Bob Meyers, Poole and his agent bothered to discuss this issue prior to Poole's signing? I am going to guess, yes, and I believe the size of the contract tells us what the thinking was.

a. Poole's highest value at this point is what he can do when inserted into the starting lineup "in place of" Curry or Klay. The Dubs and sports world have acknowledged that Poole is an above average starter at both Point Guard and Shooting Guard. For a team to have a suitable backup at both of these positions bottled up in a single player in a single contract is golden. Particularly when we factor in the fact that both of these positions are held by Hall of Famers.

b. Next, Poole addresses all of the non-Curry minutes and over time, we would expect him to continue to improve his Alexander Haig minutes and be in the running for 6th Man of the Year discussions.

c. He is Curry's heir apparent as he is the one player most suited in the league to keep 'the system' going. Once Curry leaves, the Dubs won't revert to endless PNRs and Isos. The system, a marriage of Curry's play and Kerr coaching will continue. This has value to the organization and the contract showed this.

As for the thinking that Poole should be a starter, he has basically started 50% of the games he has played in this year. So long as we have the splash bros, so long as we are going to be making deep playoff runs, so long as Curry & Klay keep aging, Poole will continue to find himself in a starting role in the 33%-40% range with more if there are any more significant injuries. He is also averaging 29 m/per, which is starter minutes, ranking 5th on the team in that category. The fact that he typically comes off the bench isn't a problem. Jordan didn't sign that contract, suddenly remember that he was playing behind the best back court the NBA has ever seen and then ask Kerr, "Hey man, when am I going to start?" All of this has been hashed out to no end behind closed doors and the contract is the sign that they are all on the same page, have been, and will continue to be.

In other words, there are no issues here. We fans have a rising star in our midst. He is thrilling, whether he is splashing or spilling. And he is in no rush to supplant his teachers. He's a smart kid, and I for one commend him for accepting a path that required putting his NBA ego in check for the greater good of his team. But why wouldn't he? He's a Warrior.

I stated that we were looking good to get to the sixth seed 2-3 days ago (and got some pushback!).

However, I wasn't really expecting to be in sixth place by the end of the homestand.

There's actually an outside chance that could happen (Clips are 1.5 games ahead, but have lost their last two).

More likely is that we're in 7th or 8th place, around 1 game behind 6th, by the end of the homestand, with Wiggs back, and Steph likely to return within a week or two. That leaves us 38 games to pick up about 2 games (to avoid tiebreakers and such).

I like our chances.

The dubs have always given us something to day dream about, it's almost impossible to get depressed. My happy place is watching Mully swish a pull up jumper in Magic's face, or Webber going round his back before dunking on Barkley. I've got eternity to reflect on the magic they've delivered in the Steph, Klay, Green and Kerr era!

2023 Newswire: Chess Federation AI Bot accuses Steve Kerr of decades-long cheating scam. “I know you saw it with your own eyes, but man, it’s just so frickin *unlikely*”, announced the exasperated, MIT-designed $10B bot. “I’m calling it. He must be cheating. I mean how am I supposed to synthesize plausible content when this sh*t is going down?”. Pressed for comment, 9-ring Kerr responded: “It’s a kids game. Ball through the hoop. Bot over-thinking it.”
