Well crap

Via Slater:

Depleted frontcourt for the Warriors tomorrow vs Hawks. Andrew Wiggins will remain out for a 14th straight game. Jonathan Kuminga also out. Right foot sprain. James Wiseman remains out with a left ankle sprain. JaMychal Green still out with lower right leg infection.

JP, DDV. Klay, Dray, and Loon is still a respectable starting lineup against the Hawks with Jerome, Lamb, Moody, PBJ and I suppose Rollins available to come off the bench. I would have to look at the 10 day rules again but without doing so wondering how long Curry and/or Wiggins need to be out for the Warriors to be able to sign a body to a 10 day.

[Edit: OK, so i looked, after the Pistons game, if Wiggins and Curry are still out, the Warriors could sign 1 or 2 players to 10 day contracts but I'm guessing both players will be back before 1/15]

Moody: crack the rotation and earn Steve’s trust by improving footwork and hip rotation on perimeter defense as well as keeping hands quick and fast to avoid doing. Work on sidestep and relocate threes.

JK: keep the aggressiveness up while reducing ticky tack fouling. Learn to use body instead of hands to rough up the offensive player. Improve assists/36 by +1. Improve reb/36 by +1.

JW: learn to anticipate first step drives and backdoor cuts better. Learn to close out on pick and pops and screen threes faster. improve hip rotation, positioning and angles on screens to make better contact. Get even more aggressive on the offensive boards. Improve court vision and passing to open perimeter guards. Improve blocks/36 by 0.5. Improve reb/36 by +1. Improve ass/36 by +1. Cut down on defensive miscommunications and blown coverage to one every three games (need to be way better than JMG’s 1+/game to win Steve’s trust)

JP. Reduce turnovers/36 by -2. Increases 3P% to 36% and FG% to 48% via better shot selection. Continue efficiency and production once back to the bench.

DDV: solidify the bench after Steph and Wiggs comes back. Especially when on the court with both JP and JK. Lead the bench unit to a positive +/- the rest of the season when there are no starters on it.

Klay: play within yourself one Steph returns. Improve your efficiency and 3P% to career levels for the rest of the season. Stop worrying about quantity of points and start worrying about quality of shots. It all comes down to shot selection, my man.

Dray: stay healthy and fired up. Don’t take risky plays on the court. Cut down on techs. Mentor, mentor, mentor. Teach all the youngsters how to become a collective stifling D unit. You’ve got DDV and JK doing it. Now teach MM and JW.

Steph: get healthy and continue to play at your prior seasonal pace. Lift the Dubs to another ‘chip. Bonus points: lift the Dubs to top3 in the West and win ALL THREE MVP’s.

Wiggs: get healthy and find another level beyond last years playoff Wiggs for this year’s playoffs.

Loondog : stay healthy and get 10 double doubles in the playoffs with average 10 pts/ game at 75% TS%, and average 12 reb/ game.

Andre: make peace and find immense joy in a Udonis Harlem role and come back next year for more of the same.

Expand full comment

PBJ: work on lateral quickness and defensive positioning.

Side note: he's at 63.4% TS and only shooting 50% from the free throw line (small sample size variance, I'm hoping).

Expand full comment

Outstanding list. Co-signed on all of the above!

Expand full comment

This is really good.

I would add for Wigg to increase rebounding and be consistent with it, especially offensive rebounding. He showed signs of it in the playoffs last year. Now make it a regular thing.

Andre... I think this year should be it for the Haslem role. We will need that roster spot next season. I don't know that he wants to be an assistant coach but that would be better for the team next year.

Expand full comment

Kerr: put Moody on some bigs defensively. He is long and sturdy enough. He may be a better OPJ/Beli than a GP2. Just like we have realized JK is a better GP2 than an OPJ. Looks like we got these guys mixed up from the start. Let's throw Moody in the trees.

Expand full comment

I think not being strong enough is Moody's weakness right now, so don't think putting him bigs should be a thing right now

I think his issue is more a matter of lateral quickness which has him getting exposed by faster guards. I don't see him getting pushed around. I see him getting beaten to spots and losing angles.

I found this pretty interesting. Summary:

Wiseman: make better screens - all about timing when to set it, when to roll.

Curry: don’t take so many bad falls - protect yourself and shoot more floaters versus diving and falling. And don’t take so many charges.

Dray: Bring it every night. This is something we’ve been discussing here at DNHQ.

JK: Tighten the handle (which means practice longer strides and time dribbles with strides). Keep going on the play making - keep going on passing.

Poole: Get to the foul line even more. At least 6/7 times a game.

Klay: Stop trying to create your own shot (again a big topic here at DNHQ). Get back to moving more.

Moody: ‘Figure out who you are in the NBA’ - very generic advice here. Know your opponents.

Wiggins: Step up defensively all the time. Don’t wait for the playoffs.

Looney: ‘Just be You’ lol. No changes.

DDV: ‘Find a Balance’ of offense and distributing. Passes perhaps too much.

Lamb, Jerome, PBJ: ‘Work on your body’ - Lamb lose a little weight, shift fat to quick twitch. TyJo get stronger, especially core, legs, upper body. PBJ get stronger and bigger to be more durable.

Whole team: read DNHQ (lol ok I added that)

Closing lineups.

In: Curry, Klay, Wiggs. I can't foresee any closing lineup without these three.

Either/Or or both: Dray, Loon

Small ball offense, free throw shooting: Poole.

Ball handling, defense, matchup / X-factor: Andre, JK, DDV

That is 9 guys who I could see Kerr playing/juggling to close out a game. I can't think of another team that has the flexibility to mix and match the last 5 minutes of a game. You can put together very interesting 5s. All defense, all shooting, big, small, you name it. I would go so far as to say there could be an offensive set you insert Wiseman in. This could get real fun.

Jan 1, 2023·edited Jan 1, 2023

Well, so here's a philosophical question:

1. In the playoffs, is it more important to bias your team for offense or defense?

My knee-jerk reaction was to say defense, but then I remembered how hard points were to come by in many Dubs postseason matches.

The additional time to prepare really shifts the advantage over to defenses, I think. That's one of the reasons Kerr usually settles in on pick and roll offense as series go along ... they just can't get decent offense in the motion offense they usually run.

I'm not sure what the answer is, and it's probably matchup-dependent. But, I'm guessing there are other factors I haven't thought of yet.

Expand full comment

That seems like a false choice. A balance is the answer. Last year the Dubs-Celtics Finals were between two teams with excellent defenses but also with big-time scorers on both sides. But the Celtics couldn't contain Steph, plus two-way Wiggs came through. Still, without stifling D, we couldn't have slowed down Tatum and Brown. We needed all of it.

Dray’s a given in the closing 5, imo — at least as much so as Klay.

As for Andre: while I’m not giving up on him returning and playing well in a few games, I see basically no scenario where as age 39 he gives us anywhere near what age 25 DDV does.

To me, barring injury, there are three realistic possibilities:

1. The five starters

2. Starters with Poole instead of Looney

3. Starters with Donte instead of Looney

If JK really blows up over the next few months and starts looking like peak Andre on D, maybe add a fourth option of starters with JK instead of Looney.

Expand full comment
Jan 1, 2023·edited Jan 1, 2023

The more I think about it, the more I think the best option (if not necessarily the most likely one) is #3: Steph, Donte, Klay, Wiggs, Dray.

Donte plays killer D (unlike JP), adds needed rebounding to the small lineup (unlike JP), rarely makes mistakes (unlike JP or JK), and reliably hits his free throws and open threes (unlike Loon, JK, or Andre).

Basically, he’s the most like peak Andre from the original death lineups, only with less length and better shooting / FT shooting.

Expand full comment

All of these are reasons I love St. Donte and want them to figure out a way to keep him.

Expand full comment

Death line ups had bigger 3’s that slide down to 4: Barnes then KD. Your proposed line up is really small and depends on Wiggs or Klay playing the 4 (probably Klay because you need Wiggs on the perimeter). JK can handle 1-5, but doesn’t have near the offensive game that DDV has. If Wiggs is feeling it offensively as he was in the Boston series I’d prefer JK’s versatility over DDV. If not, you probably need JP3 or DDV as the 3d offensive option.

Wiggins is the same positionally as HB — if anything, a more legitimate 4, since he has almost six inches of standing reach on him and more fluid athleticism, which allows him to defend the rim much more effectively. Over his career he has blocked shots at nearly *four times* the rate of HB.

Donte lacks the length of Andre (as noted) but is a significantly better rebounder; and has the combo of athleticism and grown man strength to guard most NBA 1s, 2s, or 3s.

Steph, Klay and Dray are still of course Steph, Klay and Dray — but if anything a bit “bigger” positionally than they were 5-6 years ago, since both Steph and Klay have gained a bunch of grown man strength since then, while losing a bit of speed. Klay in particular is more suited these days to banging with big 3s and even 4s than he is to chasing little guys around the perimeter.

And that’s … exactly where Donte’s youth and footspeed comes in.

I don’t see any argument for Steph-Donte-Klay-Wiggins-Dray not being an extremely structurally sound unit, on both ends of the floor.

Expand full comment

I am putting Dray on the rotation list because Steve already did this in the Finals against Boston. Of course, I would expect Dray to be out there 90%+ of the time. But cat is out of the bag on this one.

Expand full comment
Jan 1, 2023·edited Jan 1, 2023

That’s fair — there are times when Bad Dray rears his head and I’d rather have Loon in his stead for a short stretch.

But I think the same could easily happen to Klay’s spot in the closing unit if he’s struggling and Donte or JP is killing it.

Expand full comment

Start with this: the killer line up at the end of the Boston series was JP3, Steph or Klay, Wiggs, GP2, Dray. Those 6 went on the 21-0 run that buried the Celtics. I see JK as the GP2 replacement, and assume Steph and Klay are the guards. So, the closing line up in my view should be Steph, Klay, Wiggs, JK, Dray. With JP3 as the offense sub for JK to take foul shots.

JK is too good defensively with the ability to guard 1-5 like no one else other than Dray in spots (just don’t see Dray guarding point guards for extended minutes at 32).

This is premised on JK getting more disciplined re fouling of course. But it was interesting to watch DDV and JK interact in the closing minutes. They both wanted Lillard.

Expand full comment

Yeah, adding JK for Loon, whew! That has potential.

A lot depends on whether Poole becomes playable on D in the playoffs. If he can just be a mild-medium negative, I'd say 2, then 3. That three guard offense and his quickness is just so devastating.

Good problem to have, though. Three-four guys you might credibly plug into a closing unit is probably unusual, even for playoff teams.

My bet would be that Kerr goes with 3, though. Suffocating POA defense (Wiggs, Donte, Klay) and Green as a backstop.

Since I'm such a GP2 fanboy, I have to comment on Blazer fans starting to think he's superfluous. Bros ... you are wrong. GP2 is an amazing impact player and is going to have a big effect on the Trailblazers ability to beat teams with good offenses. Though I have to admit I'm a bit afraid that there's a real risk that the Portland coaching staff doesn't use him well and put him in the position to impact winning on both sides of the ball. Ah well ... if they botch it, we'll always take him back! LOL how about Portland buys him out and we get him on a minimum contract ;).

Chron writer CL dropped the "when should Poole be a full-time starter?" article and intimated that it may be sooner rather than later, if the Warriors are to capitalize on Poole's performance. I have to disagree. And I have 123 Million reasons why. Question? Do we think Bob Meyers, Poole and his agent bothered to discuss this issue prior to Poole's signing? I am going to guess, yes, and I believe the size of the contract tells us what the thinking was.

a. Poole's highest value at this point is what he can do when inserted into the starting lineup "in place of" Curry or Klay. The Dubs and sports world have acknowledged that Poole is an above average starter at both Point Guard and Shooting Guard. For a team to have a suitable backup at both of these positions bottled up in a single player in a single contract is golden. Particularly when we factor in the fact that both of these positions are held by Hall of Famers.

b. Next, Poole addresses all of the non-Curry minutes and over time, we would expect him to continue to improve his Alexander Haig minutes and be in the running for 6th Man of the Year discussions.

c. He is Curry's heir apparent as he is the one player most suited in the league to keep 'the system' going. Once Curry leaves, the Dubs won't revert to endless PNRs and Isos. The system, a marriage of Curry's play and Kerr coaching will continue. This has value to the organization and the contract showed this.

As for the thinking that Poole should be a starter, he has basically started 50% of the games he has played in this year. So long as we have the splash bros, so long as we are going to be making deep playoff runs, so long as Curry & Klay keep aging, Poole will continue to find himself in a starting role in the 33%-40% range with more if there are any more significant injuries. He is also averaging 29 m/per, which is starter minutes, ranking 5th on the team in that category. The fact that he typically comes off the bench isn't a problem. Jordan didn't sign that contract, suddenly remember that he was playing behind the best back court the NBA has ever seen and then ask Kerr, "Hey man, when am I going to start?" All of this has been hashed out to no end behind closed doors and the contract is the sign that they are all on the same page, have been, and will continue to be.

In other words, there are no issues here. We fans have a rising star in our midst. He is thrilling, whether he is splashing or spilling. And he is in no rush to supplant his teachers. He's a smart kid, and I for one commend him for accepting a path that required putting his NBA ego in check for the greater good of his team. But why wouldn't he? He's a Warrior.

I’d love to see Steve go to B2B game rotations where Steph suits the first, starting Poole and Klay suits the second, starting Poole. As Steph ramps back up, i’d even like to see him do that a bit more judiciously on some long travel days with one day in between.

However, I wasn't really expecting to be in sixth place by the end of the homestand.

There's actually an outside chance that could happen (Clips are 1.5 games ahead, but have lost their last two).

More likely is that we're in 7th or 8th place, around 1 game behind 6th, by the end of the homestand, with Wiggs back, and Steph likely to return within a week or two. That leaves us 38 games to pick up about 2 games (to avoid tiebreakers and such).
