Culture, winning and money. We all know how hard it is to win a Chip. But trying to keep this much talent together on one team for a long period of time is going to be the greatest challenge of all. Owners, front office, coaching staff, players, agents, outside advertising income contracts, TNT, and a pinch of media/social pressure are all in the mix. And smack in the middle of it all is Bob Meyers. And I forgot to mention, "A G5 and lots of money."

This article on Draymond recruiting for the dunk contest is hilarious. Almost seems fake, like an onion article or something. I need to go fact check - is JTA really invited? https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/warriors/juan-toscano-anderson-pushed-draymond-green-do-nba-slam-dunk-contest

Somehow it reminded me of Parable of The Great Feast 😆

Hopefully they won’t send JTA to the darkness cuz he can’t jump high enough. I do think Draymond had one good point. GPII jumping over GP while GP throws the lob to GPII is probably a 50 point dunk.

Kings beat the Nets 112-101 and end their 7-game losing streak. Claxton (9/11 FGs) and Johnson (8/11 FGs) were the Nets' best players. Mills was good (5/12 FGs, 4/8 threes) and Irving was okay (5/15 FGs, 2/5 threes), but Harden was trash (2/11 FGs, 0/5 threes).

As for the Kings, Barnes, Mitchell, and Hield played well. Jones was good (4/5 FGs, 4/5 FTs, 8 rebounds), Metu had 12 rebounds, and Haliburton had 11 assists and 4 steals.

What a delightful box score. Irving and Harden were a combined 18 points (7-26 shooting) and 10 TOs. I was hoping for that kind of performance against the Ws, but one takes what one can get.

I don't think that link works. Were you trying to go to a video or an article? (The links on nbcsports.com don't take you to a specific video, they take you to an article, I think, and then a video gets put at the top.)

Even more important than Lebron’s boo-boo: What’s up with GP2? I can’t find an update, but he is not on today’s injury report. I hope he’s ok! We need that fireplug!!!

Just ran across this about GPII from an injury update article.

"He banged his shin pretty hard when he went into the stands late in the game for a loose ball," Kerr said on Wednesday. "It was sore last night, I saw him today at the facility and he told me he was fine. Hopefully, that means he'll be out there tomorrow night."

I'd save him against the Kings. Give the young guys some more burn and give GPII some much needed time to heal. We need that guy tip-top for the playoffs.

Basically: ran into a chair diving out of bounds for his 5th steal and mildly bruised his shin.

KD once answered the question as to what the Dubs do differently in third quarters. He said they didn’t do anything different, they just made sure to wear out their appointments in the first half, so that the better conditioned Dubs could come out fresher in the third quarter and overwhelm their opponents. Could this be what happened last night in the fourth quarter?

I don't know but I noticed in the Moody highlight reel above that after playing great D he also beat everyone down the floor, which created spacing for a Chiozza fast-break three. That's the kind of hustle that, as the saying goes, doesn't show up in the box score, but I have every confidence Kerr sees.

I've heard different people comment on how Moody does the little things that lead to winning. I love that, and I'm glad he's here to do it with Golden State.

Down go the Sixers, leaving the Bulls (18), Grizz (18), Warriors (13), and Suns (9) as the only teams in the league with under 20 losses. And we’re still three weeks from the All-Star game.

Warriors going 67-15, 73-9, 67-15 in Kerr’s first three seasons just looks more ridiculous as the years go by.

Expand full comment

I've been rooting for someone to beat Phoenix, but I'm starting to hope that they'll make this a mega winning streak and make a run at 73-9. That would bring a LOT of notoriety to them and hopefully, a lot of pressure. If they could lose that last game of the season to finish 72-10, that would be ideal. It would be a historically great record, tying them with MJ's Bulls, would leave the Ws' record intact, and be enough of a shot at history to tempt them to do whatever they had to to keep winning, even if it meant playing certain guys longer minutes.

Agreed. Personally, I think if they'd gone with the Washington Insurrectionists there would have a large, built in fan base who have already demonstrated unquestioning loyalty to their team no matter how terrible it might be.

If the team lost, the fans would never blame them, but instead insist that they actually won and not accept any evidence to the contrary.

With unfailing loyalty and an absolute inability to acknowledge defeat, each and every year the team could hold a victory parade and add another championship banner to their stadium. The good times would never end!

Plus, they could have used the Shaman as their mascot. They could have called him Q.

I finally watched the JJ Reddick interview with Dray ( https://youtu.be/zimngZdtUNg ). It was amazing. Here's a few takeaways and links:

(1) I thought all the color he provided around the Hampton's Five was fascinating ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zimngZdtUNg&t=4308s ).

(2) This section re: Klay really stood out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zimngZdtUNg&t=4085s

He basically says that Klay will get his shots no matter what, and that Dray feels responsible as the facilitator of the offense to make sure Klay gets great shots. And if Dray doesn't do so, then Klay will end up taking poor shots. Dray flat out says that he thinks if he was on the team right now, Klay's reintegration experience into the team and the NBA would be different (https://youtu.be/zimngZdtUNg?t=4211 ).

(3) Finally, in his talks about the Rockets rivalry ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zimngZdtUNg&t=5613s ), which includes awesome Morey-shade, but also:

(3A) He mentions their defensive strategy ( https://youtu.be/zimngZdtUNg?t=5720 ):

Let Harden have his, but make sure the rest of the Rockets can't get theirs. Then, Harden will be tired by the 3rd/4th quarters, and can't keep pace and will fall behind. This is eerily similar to their play all season. Of course, outscoring opponents in the 3rd has been a staple statistic that they excel at throughout the dynasty (as far as I remember). This has me wondering whether the dynastic 3rd quarter numbers are all due to overwhelming the other team/star with defense and tiring them out? It feels like we've talked about it a lot more this season. I guess I never noticed as much since it seems that in the dynasty years, they'd always swing out to huge Q1 leads, too.

(3B) Really Going for the 'Chip: https://youtu.be/zimngZdtUNg?t=5856

JJ Reddick says you know when a team is really going for it: Putting their chips on the table rather than holding on to assets/resources. JJ gave the Rockets credit as the only non-LeBron team that was going for it.

If what JJ says is true, then are the Dubs really going for it this year? And if not, what else could they do?

Here's my question for our community then: How many of you would trade one of the three younglings for someone like Patty Mills, who would fit under the MLE and instantly become a main rotation player? Mills is one of the only players out there who would fit under the salary cap structure who would be a major upgrade. If the Nets fall anymore, they may be enticed by a potential future star for a sacrifice in 'chip probability this year. And if you would say yes to a trade, who would it be? MM, JFK, or JW? What if it had to be 2 of the 3? Would you trade all three?

Expand full comment
Feb 3, 2022·edited Feb 3, 2022

Not in favor of a trade at this point, as it would upset the chemistry of a team that is tight and winning.

If I were to consider a trade, I wouldn't be tempted by Patty Mills. But if someone offered a decent rotation quality big man, the Ws would have to at least consider it. It's just not a great idea to have Looney be the only center on the team, even in the updated NBA.

Expand full comment

The way it seems to me, the warriors believe they have a shot at the title over the next 3 years with Steph. Because of the salary cap situation, they really need players that can outplay their contracts (like GPII, Poole, OPJ this year). I think it’s reasonable to expect that Kuminga and Moody will outplay their contracts in the next 2 years and increase the team’s championship odds over the length of Steph’s contract. I’d rather have good odds each year than slightly improved odds this year and worse odds next year.

Expand full comment

I wouldn't trade any of those guys for Patty Mills. He's not that good -- his career numbers are quite underwhelming -- and more importantly he doesn't fill a need. We got a logjam of good guards. If he were prime Bogut, that's an Aussie I'd trade for now

Expand full comment

I’m against the trade too. But how do they get the rooks more playing time so they can be more ready come playoffs? I’m kinda thinking now that holding Andre, OPJ and Bjeli out the next couple of games (Kings and Thunder)gives them good extended rest AND gives the youngsters more playing time. It’s 10 players suited up plus the garbage time 2-ways. Steph/Klay/Wiggs/Loon/Moody starting with Poole/Kuminga/Lee/GP2/JTA off the bench. Lacking some height so that could be a problem, but still should be able to crush the next two weak opponents.

Expand full comment

A 6'1 guard who is used to high usage? Doesn't sound like something we want or need. Moody is going to be excellent. Kuminga is going to be excellent. Wiseman is more of an unknown I guess but we obviously need a center in the future. Poole is a great backup to Steph. Don't fix what ain't broke. Don't disrupt the chemistry of a good team. Don't get rid of key future components for a marginal upgrade when you are already a top tier title contender. This all seems like common sense to me.

Expand full comment

"Don't disrupt the chemistry of a good team. " Amen.

Expand full comment

I'm not trading a youngster for Patty Mills or anybody like him. It is essentially duplicating Damion Lee and we already have him. Nor am I convinced that Moody won't be roughly as good as Mills by the time the playoffs start assuming he gets enough playing time with either Golden State or Santa Cruz. The reality is that once the playoffs start, assuming everybody is healthy, the bulk of the minutes will go to Curry, Thompson, Wiggins, Green, Looney, Poole, OPJ, GPII, Iguodala, Lee, and Bjelica. That doesn't leave a lot of minutes for the fringe guys and the Warriors don't need another fringe guy to get to the playoffs. The one possible need is a backup center as Looney/Bjelica/Wiseman insurance and they don't need to give up Kuminga or Moody to get that. It sure would have been nice to see Wiseman on the court before the trade deadline.

I wouldn't trade any of them for Mills.

What a great Poole party last night. This game almost made up for the loss to Indiana at the start of the last home stand.

31/6/5 from a second team guy? Sensational, rarely seen during the "Strength in Numbers" era. And Jordan keeps on excelling, night after night. (Well, not including the Rockets game.)

Great seeing Moody and Kuminga play the way they did, too. Heck, even Chiozza looked pretty good last night.

Expand full comment

I think it more than made up for it. This was a schedule loss, so it offsets a game the Ws should have won. But it was also super-entertaining and had the virtue of giving our young guys a chance to overcome a seemingly insurmountable deficit and close out the win against a healthy NBA team. That's better IMO than winning at Indiana and losing at San Antonio per the schedule.

Expand full comment

Maybe if you have a rational mind, but I don't, and I'm still more p.o.'ed about the Indiana loss than I am elated about the pounding the young'uns gave the Spurs. I haven't taken a loss that hard since Charlotte last year.

Both of 'em basically decided by stupid technicals. Indiana loss because of GP2's, Charlotte loss because of Draymond's.
