Trade Grab Bag 12. Bradley Beal, Zach Lavine, trading up, out, and into the future
Win Now? At what cost?
Let’s look at trades being floated around the NBA media landscape. Click through to the tweets to vote, see the vote, and for the original source (not me!) of the different trade ideas.
Bradley Beal
This is the big one. Marcus Thompson is pushing the idea that Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green are pushing the office to get Beal as a Win Now move.
I’m not sure how much new information is there. We know Steph and Dray have said they want help now. This doesn’t necessarily mean they are turning the screws on GSW to get Beal specifically.

Given the salary cap, the trade would have to look a lot like this.

I think… WAS says no. But that’s a pretty decent package for a rebuild for a new coach.
Before you, Dubs fan, laugh and say this is too much… maybe to you. But last night, the poll was running 40% DEAL ON, 21% WAS says NO, 32% GSW says NO, which tells me the package is a little too low for WAS since the poll sample is heavily Warriors fans.
Zach Lavine
I had definitely not been thinking about Zach Lavine as a target, but this was creative.

I think the Bulls believe they are on the way up, so they wouldn’t do this unless LaVine is extorting them in private. And that is a boatload of picks…
Parade For Cade
No way DET does this, unless they desperately believe in James Wiseman.
Trading Up
This might be a fair trade in another draft, but in a conventional wisdom 6 player draft, it is not valuable to have #7.
Curry Reunion

I think this is maybe a fair trade in the abstract, but I think Seth fills an important role for PHI, and PHI should be going all in to win now.
Wiseman and Penny Reunion

The first trade was the original offer. I made the second one because 12.2 seemed lopsided. These trades heavily depend on (1) Penny becoming coach and (2) ORL and Penny loving the heck out of Wiseman.
Note: since we polled this, Jahmal Mosley was selected as the new ORL coach, so I’m guessing they won’t be overvaluing James Wiseman any time soon.
Same Time Next Year

I think SAC wouldn’t want to bet on themselves, but you can’t ever rule things out with the Kings and their flaky owner. For GSW, it makes sense to punt the pick forward, in that there isn’t much room for rookies on a Win Now roster.
Add up the salaries of the 7th pick after signing+ Looney + Paschall, Smailagic,
Mulder and GP2 the Warriors could cobble together about 19M in salary. They could get more in there with Damion Lee and JTA but let’s assume those guys are locked in as cheap rotation players.
The Pacers could view the #7 pick + Looney + salary filler as a good return for Turner or Levert.
So here’s what I don’t get. Paul George was traded for SGA, 3FRP expected to be non lottery, and two pick swaps.
Beal is not as good as George, and I get that SGA is pretty good, but why are we expected to have to give up wiggins, wiseman, two lottery picks in a good draft, and more for Beal? I don’t see it…
