He’s no longer high on Mobley, but now really likes Coleman Hawkins, and possibly Madsen. Is warming up to Toohey and still likes Richard.
He made an interesting point in watching Summer League; the challenge is trying to determine if guys truly have a high motor all the time, or just balling out because the personal stakes are so high in these games.
I've been trying to figure out who Will Richard reminds me of in the NBA, and it's Josh Hart. Similar size, builds and dawginess, but I haven't seen enough of Richard to know if he can be the kind of connector and glue guy Hart is. We should be so lucky.
He's a stretch big who can still hit the three, still plays good defense, and still makes quick decisions with the ball. What's not to like as long as he can stay healthy?
Because every time he does play he can take mileage off Draymond, and despite his age, advanced stats suggest he might be the best center to change teams in this off-season?
Because even if a player has flaws, it is still a good thing to sign them as long as they improve your team? It's rare that a player who played a real role on a 60+ win team with good stats the previous year is available for just the TPMLE.
Just because I think we all would prefer Chet given the choice, doesn't mean acquiring Horford isn't a great move.
Not just that but his Warrior fit specifically is really smooth, he has the shooting to pair with the Butler units, the passing to pair with the Curry units, and the switchability to pair with Draymond units.
My main concern is health. I realize he was healthy this year, but this team is just not built to be healthy in the postseason.
Ages next April:
Horford: 39
Steph: 38
Butler: 36
Draymond: 36
Assuming that even three of these guys are going to be healthy in the playoffs requires significant optimism. And injuries to Steph or Butler probably make us automatic outs in anything other than the first round.
I think what we really need is Post to turn into a mediocre defender with a shot, which, while not a slam dunk, seems more likely to me than Horford lasting another year healthy. And, add a big reserve defensive center (but who we expect near zero offense out of).
What the Warriors need is what they can get, which is hopefully both an improved Post and a healthy Horford to both mentor Post and provide dependable clutch playoff minutes.
You've mentioned Goga a few times, and you're not the only one. What leads you to think he would be available? It seems like he fits right where he is.
If Curry is no longer the eldest member of the team, Father Time will invoke its powers on Al instead. Sorry, Al's knee.
More serious, I think he is a fine pickup, but yeah it's not earth shattering. But if he stays healthy he may be a bit better fit than Looney, and cheaper. At this point Warriors chance at a deep run is slim anyway, so I think any short term signing that boosts the "best version" of the team, regardless of injury concerns, is probably a positive.
If we strike out on Horford and have to resort to Boucher or Lyles I still think we need a true big body on top of that. I consider those two oversized wings. We need a big boy that can be competent for 5 or 10 minutes on nights where we're playing trees. I don't even know where to start looking. It's really Horford or bust at this point unless MDJ can cook up something nice in the trade machine.
One trade I opposed that I was actually right about. Some around here were willing to throw practically any asset we had into the trade to get him.
Course all that does is wash out my horribly bad take on Butler (though, still TBD ... my main issue is that he gets injured ... we'll have to see how next year goes). :)
Seriously. I was never super excited for a potential PG13 trade, in part due to age-related concerns, but I certainly didn't expect his situation to turn out like this.
Despite the injuries that ended our past season, I'm quite thankful that they weren't any worse.
I'm similarly worried about Horford since I expect him to be pretty limited in how often we'll see his good side too. At least with Andre's last season we knew he would be a good influence on the team chemistry/intangibles.

Per Monte Poole, Moody hurt his thumb against the Bucks in mid-March but chose not to shut it down for the season because the Warriors were playing well. Also that he didn't let the Warriors know how badly it was hurting (per Poole it hurt every time he caught the ball and he felt like he was shooting with four fingers). Both Poole and Hill theorized that Moody's inconsistent previous minutes might have led to him not mentioning the extent of his injury to anyone after he finally broke through to a regular rotational role.
They also said the brace came off last week so Moody is resuming basketball activities now. Too bad he doesn't get a full offseason but at least he gets a couple months.
It's a pretty bad sign when PG can't even work out without getting injured.

Stonewall is a variation of Dutch, correct? I'll trust your superior chess knowledge on that. But I'm telling you, the Stroopwafel defense, in the hands of a 7-foot center from Amsterdam, is a thing of beauty.
Man, that's way I always worry about all the new sports teams in Vegas, I mean, you have these 24 year old kids with money, they go there, next thing you know they are hanging out at chess clubs, winning tournaments. Just a bad look for the league.

Having a hard time understanding why Jaden Shackelford is on the summer league roster. He's a true gunner but has never been efficient. In three years in the G-League, he's gone from 38.8% to 35.7 to 33.0% on threes while averaging fewer than 3 boards and 3 assists per game. If shooting is supposed to be his strong suit, maybe he needs to find another line of work.
First time watching him yesterday and his movements didn't really impress me. Madsen looked much better and I'm not just saying that because he hit a bunch of 3s
All right curious about everyone's opinion about which summer league players should fill what spots. First my assumptions about what spots we have:
We have 9 players under contract and I am going to assume we re-sign JK, get Horford and one of Melton/GP2. That's 12. Further, I'm going to assume they get no other vets and follow recent protocol and leave the 15th spot open. That leaves spots 13, 14 and 3 2-way spots (I know Rowe and Armstrong currently have 2 of the 2-ways but they can easily swap if you want someone else) so 5 players from summer.
Candidates: Armstrong, Rowe, Toohey, Richard, Mobley, Cryer, Bolden, Madsen, Hawkins. I don't see anyone else on the roster as having much of a shot (maybe Mañon is a dark horse?). That's 9 or so players for 5 spots. Who you got?
Here's mine (so you can know how it won't end up). Based on the last 2 games it looks like Cryer may be falling off their radar but I hope he stays and plays for Santa Cruz. Bolden and Mobley overlap and Bolden doesn't look like he's all the way back from his injury, sadly and has not popped like last summer so I think, he's back to SC, also. I think Armstrong, Toohey, and Richard are in somewhere and Madsen is one more good game away from locking a spot down, too, I'd guess. That leaves Rowe, Mobley and Hawkins for 1 spot. Rowe is the best player right now, but it feels like Hawkins has the most upside if he pops so I am predicting Armstrong, Toohey, Richard, Madsen and Hawkins with probably the draft picks getting the actual roster spots because they are cheeeep. However, I do not know the mechanics for players just being on the Santa Cruz roster and if we could get Hawkins, for example, just on the SC roster without losing him, that might change my calculus ...
OK, but what about Knox and Spencer? Are they going to be on the roster or not?
I like all 10 (including Manon) plus even Hinson and Shackleford for Santa Cruz. Frankly, I don't know what is up with Hinson, but he shined in a over a dozen G League games I watched last year. He hit tough and deep shots on the regular, but you wouldn't know that from how poorly he has performed this summer.
You can throw Knox and Spencer in if you want. Seems to me the team has moved on and I don't expect them to be on either roster, but that's just one unconnected fan's opinion (I have reasons: for example, I think I read somewhere that Spencer would get paid a little more than a current younger 2nd round pick such as Richard and if they end up near an apron that little bit could cascade into more money or more problems for other moves and Spencer is just not worth that)
It is so hard to evaluate marginal players in summer league.
I like your 5 guys but Rowe is a proven commodity. Good enough to fill in for awhile if injuries happen, but probably at best a 10 to 12th guy which is certainly something.
Richard has grown on me and I think he has a shot at being a solid rotation guy maybe one day soon. He really strikes me as a slightly smaller Moses, but how does he fit with Podz, Moses and Buddy?
Toohey and Armstrong both have skills but really need to shoot it better. Hawkins can pass but really uncertain what else he does well. Madsen can shoot like a million other guys but uncertain what else he does well and he is 24. Going to be curious about Toohey and how his defensive skills translate vs real NBA players. Hopefully they do. His shooting is very concerning. He doesn’t have that natural shooter vibe.
I have lost interest in Mobley. Don’t like his shooting form and just seems like a classic guy who will always battle to get a spot at the end of the bench or G League.
Agree with all of that pretty much. Rowe is the most NBA ready, but if we need to use him, we are in such a bad situation that what does it matter (or maybe we're winning so much he gets lots of 4th Q PT? :P).
Really the Warriors are going to need all of Steph, Dray, JB, Buddy, Podz, Moody,Horford (I think they have a handshake agreement for after JK situation clears up), and either JK or whomever they bring back for him to stay healthy and ball out. Whatever Post, TJD, and Gui can do in the way of absorbing minutes could really help out.
If we're super lucky we get at least one of Melton/GP2. Melton would likely start if he's all the way back, and we know a healthy GP2 can be a rotation player on a championship team. let's say we get one of them. That's 9 main rotation players plus 3 playable-ish guys (or 10 + 2 if Post makes some defensive progress in the off season. I guess Rowe could sub for Gui a little but if he's playing for Buddy or Moody or Podz, we are in too much trouble for me to worry about if it's Rowe or Toohey or Richards who's getting a lot of good experience on a losing team.
All these guys a low 2nd rounders -> not even drafted kind of guys anyway so if one of the 9 pops into a rotation player, even a marginal one, we win and we already have TJD and Post so we're playing with house money anyway.
Of the guys I mentioned, none are making a difference this year. When all is said and done I am guessing we are going to have 2, maybe even 3 meaningful new players in my opinion. It will play out eventually.
