I like Quinones. I like TJD. If Dray doesn’t punch either of them I might consider taking back my +1 TZ night owl and following morning bu….it poster roles.

OK, it's HYPOTHETICAL DUBS VS SUNS. SUNS start 3 guards, PAYNE at PG, BEAL AT SG, BOOKER at SF, AND KD, AYTON. Who starts for the DUBS, and what are the matchups ON DEFENSE...

Expand full comment

Pretty sure we would just start our normal starting 5. Steph>Payne, Klay>Beal, Wiggs>Booker, Dray>KD, Loon>Ayton

Sounds good. Would be interesting. Overcome by events, apparently Payne is now headed for the Spurs...lol. Dray on KD, and Loons on Ayton would be interesting...

Podziemski was pushing the pace a lot, that's something else that will translate to the Warriors. He brings a lot to the table if he can iron out the kinks.

I’ve watched very little summer league (only highlights of the first two games) and haven’t had the time to sit and chill and enjoy the work of the writing staff here.

What’s everyone’s strongest impressions of the rooks, Gui, Lester and crew?

I feel sure that TJD will be at least an end-of-the-bench big (rim protector, can pass, rim run). He's already shown enough tools to be in the Javale McGee role. And, becoming a rotation guy eventually seems possible. Little worried his relative lack of quickness will hurt him at the NBA level.

Podz. Lot of good stuff (handle, passing, defensive positioning), but as Beli has said, he needs to shoot well, or it will probably not mean a lot.

Gui. He's ready for a two-way, and very possibly will be ready for a roster spot by the end of next season. It's kind of hard to believe he's only been in the Dubs system a year, and he's still 21. Still a little late on closeouts, and his handle needs work. I've been very impressed with the variety of finishes he can make around the rim.

LQ: I'm beginning to think his best attribute may just be his aggression (both offensively and defensively). He's less skilled than Gui, but has a similar mentality. Put him on a 2-way, and he can be our 1/2 fill-in guy when we need it. Kind of hoping that long-range shot becomes a weapon.

Can TJD shoot a jump shot? He made some of his free throws so he’s not hopeless, right?

I don't think he had one in college, and he's 23. So, eight ball says no.

Our deeper thinkers on this board may have more informed opinions. I don't really understand basketball at the skills development level.

I came away happy about all four:

Gui’s 15 pounds of muscle is legit and so is his shooting. At 6’8” 220, he’s now Aaron Gordon’s size. Love his motor and playmaking. There’s some defensive stuff to clean up, but I think he’s much closer to contributing than we all thought.

TJD is a big, bouncy hooper who plays hard. Obvious experience and BBIQ. I think at some point this season, he’ll be able to take some load non-garbage load management minutes for Draymond and Looney. This might sneakily be MJD’s best move. TJD looks way ahead of PBJ and is a lot cheaper.

If Lester gets a roster spot, I will not complain at all. I think he’s ready to be the new DLee.

Podz showed that a lot his skills translate to what the Warriors are trying to do. Love his awareness on the court. Not worried about the shooting.

I like how you described the game of all the main guys. Thanks

The one thing I'm a little curious about is whether we there is reliable anthrometric data on Gui. I don't mean to 'diminish' Gui because I think that 15 lbs of muscle gain shows up in his much improved ability to absorb contact. I've seen sites state that he's 6'8 with a 7'1" wingspan, but on screen I feel he looks closer to his 6'6"-6'7" SL competition. I'd guesstimate (admittedly with no data) that he's closer to height/build of Jaime Jaquez, Alec Burks, Dyson Daniels (see Pelicans game), or Jermaine Samuels (see Rockets game). That's still solid for a 3 that can drive, but not Aaron Gordon who is an absolute unit that he can reliably switch onto 5's.

Expand full comment

Looking at him on the court, I’m inclined to believe the height and weight (and since the NBA cracked down on the fudging a few years ago). As for the wingspan 🤷🏼‍♂️ but he looks pretty long-armed

Expand full comment

afaik, this is the most credible:

https://gleague.nba.com/player/1630611/gui-santos

6'6" / 185 lb

it's probably recorded when he first came over, so my guess he's around 200-210 lb which accounts for his greater stability on drives.

Expand full comment

I missed the press conference where he said he'd 220. good on him to put that work in

Expand full comment

Totally agree on TJD. Podz didn’t show much aggressiveness and shot like crud, but I think most of us liked his passing game and he gets a decent amount of rebounds.

Expand full comment

I liked some of Podz' passing game, although SL is not a good test for him. Except for the three SeaDubs players, most of those guys didn't know each other or the system, so they often weren't sure where to be when. That makes it hard to set guys up with passes. First impression, Podz needs time in SC. We'll see how he looks in training camp and preseason with the big team.

I was very happy with TJD. But then, his strengths probably were less impeded by SL chaos than Podz' were.

I feel like we need a better Sea Dubs squad if Podz is supposed to work on things there. The summer league group was... chaotic, and not in a good way.

Happy Damion Lee landed a 2-year gig at Phoenix for 5m total. After finishing 3rd in NBA in 3PT shooting efficiency, he deserved it; missed him in Dubland last season...Speaking of Phoenix, they have quietly stacked up a formidable roster to choose from....8 guards (BOOKER/BEAL/PAYNE/GORDON/GOODWIN/OKOGIE/D.LEE/S. LEE); ....7 forwards (DURANT/CRAIG/WATANABE/WAIRIGHT/WARREN/BATES-DIOP/BAZLEY)...4 CENTERS...(AYTON/BIYOMBO/EUBANKS/METU).... Hm...definitely built for a run....

Thanks, AJ. Must have been looking at an outdated team roster...lots of moves. KD/BEAL/BOOKER/AYTON and the rest are....still built for a run I would say. Many of their players are switch hitters like 6'9'' METU at F-C and 6'8'' WATANABE, also at F-C, in addition to 7' AYTON and 6'10'' EUBANKS at the 5...Same for their guards as 6'7'' ROSS as G-F, 6'5'' D.LEE as G-F...going to be interesting with 6'10'' KD and 6'5'' BOOKER anchoring their scoring....BEAL is only 6'4'', and we know he can put the ball in the hole....lol

Overall observations so far (acknowledging that summer league is the smallest piece in the puzzle)

Podz gonna be ok with some of that Steph gravity. Cant get a feel quite yet if he will be more effective on ball or off ball (not much has changed. Best thing MJD could have done is tell the media not to expect Podz to be a Day One contributor)

Not enough of a sample size on TJD obv but im sure he’s gonna be ok too (also not expected to contribute immediately but CMON! lol)

Lester is not nor will he be a rotation player for us and I hope we dont even waste a two way spot on him (2 30 point games in SL on decent efficiency should always be worth an extended training camp look)

Santos on the other hand, can hopefully wrap up a 2 way in training camp (or not 😞. Probably guarantees another full year in G League or overseas)

Cams gonna be good 😔 (RedNinetyFour on Twitter made a young Corey Magette comp for Cam and I haven’t looked at him quite the same since)

Warriors (or Gui) would have to buy out his team's contract. I hope they do, but with this latest injury, it appears doubtful.

I was heartened by Podz. The shot didn’t go in, but whatever. He looks small and doesn’t get by guys easily but we already knew that. He also looks physical, plays hard and has a good feel. He’s gonna need to develop a lot of tricks and craft to be a good player, but he’s got the style of game where you can imagine that working out. Now that I see him as a potential PG I can see where he can be a starter who knocks down shots, does a lot of hustle floor game stuff, but is probably best playing with another wing who’s the primary creator.

Disagree with you on Lester. He’s got some upside where he can be a 3 and D guy but also get his own shot in a pinch. Not easy to find. His offensive efficiency as a lead creator isn’t that important.

Podz and TJD will be co rookies of the year, JK will get his first all star appearance and be named most improved, Curry will out do his unanimous MVP season, Green will be co defensive player of the year with Loon, Thompson will pass Kyle Korver and Vince Carter in career made 3s, and the Warriors will go 16-0 in the playoffs aided by an injury free CP3 steadying the ship during the non-Curry minutes. Well, maybe not the last part. Is that irrational enough?

I feel bad for that bench PG (Yuri Collins?) who just gave away a bunch of possessions and buckets all in a few seconds and turned a 7 point lead into an almost tied game. That was a rough stretch that felt like the cheesy basketball movie dramatization of giving the game away.*

Is it just me or did they bring Q and Podz back in right after that? Or maybe they never subbed them out? I expected them to not play the whole second half, in the last game they usually let the bench play more. But maybe they really wanted to win one in summer league. They seemed tired though. Lots of miscommunications that weren't happening in the rest of the game.

*The same guy also turned a TJD block at the end of the game into another free layup for the other team, with two offensive players and absolutely no one back on defense, because after the nice block he decided instead of going for the loose ball he would turn his back and run up the court expecting the guy who blocked the ball to also beat two other people to it.

I feel like my main feeling by the end of summer league every year is relief at not having to watch the bench players they get play anymore. So often they just seem uncomfortable in the system and ALSO physically smaller than every other team at the same time, which... makes for some great basketball.

Expand full comment

yep. rough game for Collins after what was relatively steady SL. And yeah, that TJD block loose ball that wasn't picked up was super frustrating.

I think LQ subbed in for Podz after the bad Collins turnover sequence. They held for a couple minutes, before Collins and TJD subbed out for Davis and Perry, which triggered a second collapse that put them in a hole.

Damn, impressive memory!

I wonder if guys who don't have a contract tend to get a little desperate to show off at the end of summer league, leading to pushing and tunnel vision, leading to compounding bad sequences like the one Collins just went through (and agreed, he looked solid most of summer league). It seems like every year things get really sloppy right at the end. Which if you think about it, relative to regular summer league sloppiness, that's saying something.

Expand full comment

Yeah, must be tough to coach since everyone has their own agenda. Curious if the SL coach is also bound by agreements to get each player a certain number of minutes while also trying to get them to run the actions they want the main guys to practice.

I think that might be part of the reason why they end up with less physically talented SL players is they want the guys that will accept 'trying' to play Kerr basketball rather get their own. The value is we get to see plays the main guys might actually be involved in, but it also breaks down a lot since they don't have much practice with each other and the system. just speculating, I don't really know

Expand full comment

RJ commented that SL teams in general are trying to see how players can work in their system, even if it's not the best system for the SL roster. I imagine that's more true of some teams than others but if he's right, a lot more than the Warriors are doing that. So that wouldn't result in us getting less talented players.

On the other hand, maybe it's because players know the Warriors won't have a lot of opportunities for young players, although the two-ways are up for grabs. (Two-ways aren't guaranteed so even if they've made a two-way offer to a player, they can get out of it.)
