One more roster spot they need to fill to get to 14… suggestions?

Saric signing kinda makes me think that Dame to Miami isn't happening or at least not soon to happen.

Expand full comment

Yep.

It's also a very good sign that we will keep Quinones. If Saric couldn't find a better than minimum deal elsewhere, it's unlikely Lester will.

Rumor has it that Saric called KT to chat the other day, and it went something like this:

Dario: I really like what you guys do, and it would be fun, but I don’t know. My agent says I still could get better money somewhere else if I wait awhile longer.

Klay: Four rings!

Dario: I’m in.

Okay, I made that up. But it COULD have happened!

$2.7M 1 yr contract

Vet min, so the Warriors only pay $2.01M and the league kicks in the rest.

Seems trivial, but that $700K actually saves them close to $7M in luxury taxes.

These games are kind of meaningless and have nothing to do with the NBA. We get to see players trying to make a statement mostly in ISO situations, not much playmaking going on or team work. Energy, pace, and athleticism, are obvious. No subtleties here unless you are looking for them.

Kendric Davis is the only real ball handler and a very good one at that. He has an overall game. Could he make the team? Not with the 3 ball handlers that we already have. Gleaguer.

Podz. Wild and wooly. DDV clone. Either he is not being coached well, or he is lost except for chasing the ball. Gleague.

Santos. He has always been the guy I was most interested in to see how he developed. He is at that point, where he is straddling the gleague and the bench. They could use his size and skills but Kuminga may get priority. Gui's game comes easier than Kuminga's.

Quinones. Consistency will be a factor in him making the team. Can he show it here? He's a scorer ala Poole. He was lost for most of the game.

Jayce Johnson. Too slow, not athletic, but hardworking. Back to gleague.

Reggie Perry. Also slow and not athletic but playing within his game and could use his power to move players in the paint. Need more time to see him. Unless he does something really well, say goodbye.

Javon Johnson. All offense, no D. None. Gleague.

I. Mike. I think there's more to this guy than we've seen. Gleague.

Say goodbye to the rest.

Summer League is tough to watch. The players are literally thrown together and given a rudimentary plan that doesn't and cannot match what the NBA is looking for. This is strictly advertising for NBA. Greet and meet.

Just to add a couple of points to the above post. Lester is on a two way currently, but listed as a RFA(restricted free agent). Another team can make him an offer. How much will the Warriors match?

Gui is an unsigned draft pick. I'm not sure what this actually means? Does he have any kind of contract with the Warriors? Can he be plucked away from us? Should we worry?

They can't match anything other than a minimum offer to Lester, right? Same situation as Ty.

He's an RFA, but cap restrictions still apply.

I'm still on the Quinones on the main roster bandwagon. I'd like to see him get the full minimum deal and the 14th roster spot. Last game's performance notwithstanding.

Also, Beli says Gui is under contract for next year, so there's no chance we lose him. I haven't checked this, but I'm sure he's right. It's Ty and LQ that were the RFAs.

I basically agree with you but while Summer League has all the limitations you cite, you still were able to draw quite a few conclusions from just the first three games. Probably most are valid conclusions, too. If you can do that, so can the teams. So to that extent it's more than advertising.

I doubt. the teams are concluding very much at this point.

Podz with a bad-Draymondesque line.

3-10 from the field, 11 boards, 2 assists, 5 TOs.

Not an encouraging game from Podziemski imo

Expand full comment

He had some flashes… but he’s not ever going to be a primary playmaker, since he’s never beating anybody off the dribble… and it might be so bad that defenders just never have to respect his drive and stay hugged up on him to pressure his dribble.

Expand full comment

Podz is best when he has the ball in his hands. Take it away from him and he's kind of lost and spends most of his time chasing the ball, hence, DDV clone. To me, I like seeing him be the ball handler because of the surprise in his overall game. But, they just got rid of Poole who was similarly wild and TO prone. No way this guy makes the team except through injury. He's behind Santos and LQ.

Expand full comment

Podz is on the team because he's a first round pick. He might play in SC a lot but he'll be on the 15-man roster.

Expand full comment

He'll see garbage time. Will that help to develop him? No. We also know nothing about TDJ, yet. Kerr has made it clear that he wants NBA players getting playing time, not rookies. What role can there be for him with 3 ball handlers ahead of him? Then there is Moody and possibly Lester who are better shooters. Podz is small and doesn't finish well. This could turn out to be another poor pick in the scheme of things.

Expand full comment

> This could turn out to be another poor pick in the scheme of things.

It could, but early days, I think.

A lot of it is that he's having to manufacture stuff on his own. I think his BBIQ and passing ability (which is better than I expected) should allow him to pick up the motion offense really quickly.

It's just whether he can shoot and defend well enough to stay on the floor. I've been very pleasantly surprised by his defense. He's never going to be good, but he's got real instincts for where to be on defense.

Expand full comment

Podz wasn't one of my choices for the draft but then I wanted to trade the pick. He could turn out to be pretty decent offensively but he will need playing time in SC. Maybe with experience and added strength he can improve his D as well so he can at least not be a minus. Steph wasn't a particularly good defender in his first few years but he's solid now.

At Santos' height he doesn't need to do anything from three except be able to hit that squared up catch and shoot jumper. So far so good this summer.

Just looks so pure out of his hands. And he has the FT stroke to back it up.

Don't you still get credited with a rebound if you corral an airball? Podz is credited with 8 boards, but actually has 10 if you count two corraled air balls.
