Steph Curry is still magical
Warriors go right back at San Antonio... classic!
Something special happened on Wednesday in San Antonio, and now the Golden State Warriors face the cruel fate of having to go back there again two days later to try and replicate the results against a very impressive Spurs team.
The story, as ever, was about Stephen Curry and Draymond Green in the last game - an impressive and heartening win - but the side story with Jonathan Kuminga continues. Yes, it could indeed be coincidence, but the coincidence of the Warriors old school core going nuclear just as one of their hungriest young guns goes down is something to watch. Whether or not Kuminga can go tonight, this promises to be one of those random regular season games that comes with a playoff atmosphere. These are two teams that are most definitely taking a measure of one another.

The old dogs still can hunt
What stands out in the review of Golden State’s big win over Wemby’s Spurs is that the core really is still the driver. For those that may have still been in doubt about what timeline the Warriors are in: it’s still the Curry era. Full stop.
So yes, the front office of Golden State is probably looking through some old PowerPoint decks, reviewing trade proposals and talking about what they could get for some edge pieces. And yet at the same time, you do want to keep the machine moving. There isn’t much to mess with at the core of this whole thing. Maybe around the edges, sure; but leave the core alone.
This is the gamble. Yes, it has looked shaky, may well continue to do so. But at the core, the Warriors are comfortable knowing that they’ve spent $139 million on the trio of Curry, Butler, and Green - that’s like 2/3rds of the entire team salary. If this is a gamble though, it’s a calculated one.
Curry, as always, was the critical mass at the heart of the Warriors’ nuclear reaction. He went nuts for 46 points (on 13-of-25 from the floor), with five rebounds, five assists, and two steals. The Spurs were just witnesses
Kerr has said that he’ll go again with the same starting lineup - featuring Will Richard and Moses Moody. This isn’t that crazy of a deviation, but it is different from the intended design this season. Kuminga is out with a knee injury, so it’s a weird dynamic to think about - but remember that Draymond Green got his start over presumed better player David Lee after an injury. The Warriors are just looking to win. They’ve known that certain combinations happen to work and some don’t, so this dynamic has always been the elephant in the room. Moody might be a better fit here at this point than Kuminga.
[self edit to remove an overly nerdy analogy about nuclear fission (Curry and Warriors diversifying) versus fusion (leaning into the unique combination of ingredients) you’re welcome]
Anyways, point is that this is still a team that will only go as far as the stars. So yes, it is indeed extremely interesting that the Warriors still have Steph Curry’s “we’ll figure it out” gear. A timeless promise.
Curry’s 46 are the story, but so too are the quiet contributions of Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler. Curry, at 37 years of age, continues to amaze. Kerr summed it up:
“He’s our Tim Duncan - he’s the sun in our solar system”
-Kerr on Curry
What comes next for this squad? A bunch of messy basketball. It’s clear that the days of routine dominance are done. The brilliance of Curry will always be there. Green, not to be forgotten or left behind is just as culpable in the win. His stat line is the antithesis of Curry’s.
On paper, Green had an unimpressive box score stat line: 6 points (1-10 FG), 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal in 27 minutes before fouling out. But he also had the team best plus-minus differential at +15 during his time on the court.
I’m going to keep this short, because I’m convinced more than half of our readers don’t actually scroll through this deep. If you’d like more content, may I kindly suggest Wednesday’s breakdown: Did Draymond Green just go full “ship out Bynum” mode? Which is extra insightful in retrospect after the Warriors veteran-fueled blowup,
Prediction
Oh, you though the Warriors were content with a split? No. No nononnononono. Warriors win second straight on the road. You know who leads the scoring? Moses Moody, that’s who. Dubs up. Happy Friday!
Music Friday
I proposed something not punk rock, but my teenager (obviously raised right) has instead suggested some classic NOFX (RIP). May you all happily mosh through this Friday.
For maximum dork value, be sure to point out to any nearby teens or pre-teens that the Warriors avoided a dreaded “6-7” record with that last win. In doing so, they spared the world from innumerable cheesy headlines.

Jonathan Kuminga will miss tonight’s game in San Antonio with bilateral knee tendinitis. No structural issue. Absence should be relatively short-term, but Kuminga/Warriors want to manage some of the recent soreness he’s been experiencing.
Glad we were spared the cheesy middle-school headline joke.
Also, totally unrelated, but how tall is Jonathan Kuminga?
